  • Deleted scene from Manhunter that only appears on the original low Director's Cut DVD. This version comes from a a TV showing in a 4:3 frame so has more picture top and bottom than the DVD version. I've cleaned up the pcture best I could but there isn't lot to work with.

    That is Benjamin Hendrickson as Chilton; he was active in daytime soaps in the 1980's (played villain Silas Crocker on GL, detective Hal Munson on ATWT, etc). Good actor. Sadly, he killed himself in 2006 in his mid-fifties.

    it's a shame Mann's earlier films like this and especially The Keep were so butchered down by studios and cut into hundreds of different broadcast versions. This scene should've been left it, as it develops Graham's character further, builds tension for the initial Lecter (Lecktor) meeting, and also is more true to Chilton's character from the book.

    • @5eurocups2005

      In this case it would have been Michael Mann who cut this scene for his own reasons. No one would have dared mess with his Manhunter as he had full control.

      +milster Well, of course Brian Cox isn't Hopkins, and Peterson isn't Norton; it's different interpretations of the characters. You're comparing apples and oranges here.
      Personally, while I have always enjoyed Sir Anthony in Silence of the Lambs, his parts were greatly amplified and rather over done in Reg Dragon; he felt far too cartoonish to be a true genius psychopath.
      Brian Cox is more realistic and subtle. Norton is also too normal compared to the book counterpart as well. Will is unstable. Norton is charming and likeable.
      I agree that this film looks drab and is often shot poorly, though.

    I've been in a good number of public institutions and correctional facilities during an old job, and I have never seen an office or furniture like this. There's clutter and papers and folders everywhere, and things are just so very different. Look at the chair Graham is sitting in. That's something off a back porch in a Florida condo. I know this is Michael Mann, but this was just so jarring it didn't feel right at all. I think SOTL got this part of things better. I did, though, think Lecter's cell and the drawer and such were spot on. I saw stuff like that.

      @unclematt3 "It didn't feel right at all" Personally, that's part of the reason I like the aesthetic. On one hand, the room design (bare walls, all white, no clutter) gives you a sense like you're being watched and analyzed. It could be a way for the audience to get a sense of what Graham felt after returning to work. Hell even Lecter is dressed in all white, adding to the effect that even a former doctor turned prisoner is analyzing Graham.
      On the other hand, I wouldn't have wanted to see this in Silence of the Lambs because that movie evokes a different aesthetic of discomfort (cold, gloomy, worn down, old). The homes and buildings themselves give a sense of discomfort in that their worn appearance makes you feel like they should be fixed or just torn down. That could be interpreted as long-lived institutions that continue to operate and while the same obvious problems (worn down appearance) still continue to linger without being fixed.

    You know what’s silly is how Graham seethes menace as Chilton makes the observation that Graham has insight and was therefore able to apprehend lector because he can reconstruct lector’s mindset and motivations. Yet there are women or at least one woman who does the same thing in real life but no one would suggest any parallel between her motivations predilections and those of the murderers whom she profiles.
    But of course we’re supposed to infer by this and Chilton does as well, that you wouldn’t want to annoy someone whose mind so fully understands the machinations of a base and bloody murderer.

    Very interesting, thanks for uploading!
    I don't know if that was the style of the time or done on purpose, but Chilton's office looks so sterile and minimalistic that it makes me think of an inmate's cell.
    And from what I remember: Lecter's cell looks very similar, *and* they are both dressed in white. Will Graham of course isn't --> contrast between him and the two similarly staged inhabitants of the clinic?

  • @DougDstudiocreations

    A very interesting scene though largely unnecessary as these points are covered in the film already. Absolutely no comparison of this excellent film and the dumbed down versions with Anthony Hopkins for big Hollywood.

    • @tech-bore8839
      @tech-bore8839 Год назад +1

      Might be minor, but it adds a sense of discomfort that the viewer can relate to with Graham. The room evokes a sense of being watched and analyzed like an examination room (i.e. bare white walls, few pieces of furniture, little to no papers or books). It gives the feeling that even though Graham recovered from his mental issues, that he feels like he's being analyzed by the people who work with him. Hell, even Lecter himself is dressed in all white and it feels like he's analyzing Graham as well.

      Every scene in the original director's cut DVD is horribly cropped, my suspicion is they took a 4x3 copy of a longer version of the movie and used that as their source, cropping it back into widescreen and making it even more cramped. They eventually made a DVD from proper widescreen elements, but deleted this scene from that cut unfortunately.

    • @salamace7
      @salamace7 10 лет назад +34

      I think you may be comparing apples and oranges. I too prefer the Hopkins portrayal of Hannibal Lector, but what Brian Cox does is actually quite interesting if you are looking for a good depiction of psychopathy. The Character that Anthony Hopkins creates doesn't really fit neatly into any particular category of psychiatric disorder; he's not really pathologically sadistic, but he has no problem with killing people when the mood occurs; he is largely indifferent to human life, but is capable of emotional bonding; he's clearly narcissistic, but is almost superhumanly competent as well, which makes one wonder if his impressions of grandeur are delusional or not. All of these combine to make him a strong, memorable, compelling character, but not perhaps as realistic as Cox's character, who is simply a very believable psychopath.
