Performers: Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Iona Brown, Neville Marriner Title: The Lark Ascending Performance Year: 1972 Composer: Ralph Vaughan Williams
I heard this for the first time in 1977 in my first apartment where I slept in a walk-in closet (no bedroom). I had woken up to the local classical music station (in Seattle) and was in that in-between state between sleep and awake. I don't think I've ever been so moved and altered by music as at this moment. I was in an altered state for the rest of the day...and the effect of this piece on me has never changed.
Sounds like the apartment I grew up in! I'm sure this transcendental music was just what you needed. It has most certainly brought peace and joy to many! May Sir Neville Marriner rest in heavenly peace.
Iona Brown is to "The Lark Ascending" what Christian Ferras is to the Sibelius concerto: there is no way to improve those performances. Perfect beauty.
Hilary Hahn has me in tears every with violin concerto I hear her play, however for me Iona Brown's recording of The Lark Ascending is the most original and by far the best. It stirs the soul like no other and what better piece of music is there when on a mountain top in the late afternoon. The orchestra is near perfection as well.
This piece introduced me to Classical Music. Stunning solo from Iona Brown. Beautiful sound from the orchestra. Musical balm for the soul and spirit. An all time great. Heard on many's a desert island !
As I listen to the many versions of The Lark Ascending” on RUclips to include on my playlist, I happen upon this rendition. It is pure ecstasy from the beginning to the end. A truly out of body experience. Please…”enjoy”.
This music helped me through a very tough time in my life. Now, more than thirty years later, I can't listen to The Lark all that often, there is a lot of emotion bound up in it. But I still adore the piece, and understand why it touches so many people. RVW's music surely exceeds Meredith's poem in its scope and intentions. The Lark is a response to WWI; the loss of human life, the violation of nature. It's music that achingly describes the transience, and fragility of life.
Every time I listen to this masterpiece , the sadness and nostalgia inside me seeps out . As my ears is discerning , I understand the splendor of this performance well There is something extraordinary in this breathtaking performance From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
I want to finish my last life while listening to this song under the cherry blossoms in full bloom and wrapped in the storm of the falling cherry,s petals at the shining night of the fullmoon . 🍎
What can you say ? Mere words are no match for the beauty of this piece of music. I'm flying high looking down on englands green and pleasant land. A summers day among rolling hills.
One of the all time greats for all good violists to play. So beautiful to listen to and I can hardly describe what it like to play - almost religiously sublime!
The version, Iona Brown & Neville Marriner. I've listening to since I was 14 & still feel to be the most moving piece of music I have ever listened to (35 years later), it has grandeur and yet calm, pace, yet calm, raw & fluidness. The original version repeated by BBC4 at shirehampton public hall with Julia Wang & Charles Matthews is very much a close second. While are country looses it's identity, music of this calibre will always bring us (myself at least) back to a golden time of composers of great depth & a national identity.
+duncan cook yes: Performance skills (aided by govts.money) improve; yet, somehow, magical/historic performances like this transcend that. Cross ref Barry Rose's guildford cathedral perfs pre compression/marketing bxxxxxxs in the 70s with the current youtube presentations .....I remember radio 3 on am mono sounding better when i was a kid!!!!!!!
everything is chaotic right now. it seems like everyone has had to change their normal lives. and things only seem to be getting worse. but this recording always brings me peace. it really is like a lark ascending, flying away from all of its problems and starting a new life. whenever another incident happens, i play this piece. and i imagine myself flying away.
Without this nostalgic and sentimental melody's work , the English music world would have been very lonely , the enjoyment and pleasures of the English music would have been less , and I would feel that the English music is like the taste of stale beer I'm just intoxicated with this magnificent , inspirational , immeasurable performance of my favorite masterpiece From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
This song leaves me spellbound . It demonstrates the power to liberate from the worldly time and the complicated fetters flowing into the modern world .
Like very few other musical jewels, this piece of divine strings sounds, makes me feel as if I'm not made of flesh and blood, but of something yet inexplicable, as if I travel in a beam of sound from and to, a source and destination I could never understand, even if I try. How can such a brief composition be as sad and happy at the same time?..So short and eternal, simultaneously.
Academy of St. Martin-in-the-field's has more perfect recordings than any other orchestra as far as I'm concerned. Simply an anomaly and particularly now.
Hi, I know this is not a rap song or a pop song or Lawrence well song. But how can anyone appreciate it when you will not play it at a volume that can be appreciated and maybe even drown out the garbage that is sinking the world into oblivion. MUSIC LIKE THIS DESERVES TO BE HEARD BY THE MASSES. ANY IDEA THAT WE SHOULD HAVE TO STRAIN OUR EARS AS THE BOW CROSSES THOSE STRINGS AND THOSE FELT PADS HIT THE STRINGS IS RIDICULOUS. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF UPLOADING THIS AT THIS VOLUME. LET ME MAKE IT CLEAR, IF THE ROOM IS NOT VIBRATING WITH EVERY MINISCULE MOMENT THAT THERE IS A VIBRATION BEING CREATED BY THE STROKE OF THE BOW AND THE PRESS OF A KEY, YOU ARE DOING THIS COMPOSITION A DISSERVICE. HI-FIDELITY. LET THE LISTENER FEEL EXACTLY WHAT THE ORIGINAL COMPOSURE INTENDED. AND I Q QPOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE IF THIS COMPOSER WANTED THEIR LISTENERS TO STICK THEIR EARS AGAINST THE FACE OF THE VIOLINIST AND THEIR HEADS INTO THE CHAMBER OF THE PIANO! PLEASE FORGIVE ME IF THIS ID THE CASE. OTHERWISE CRANK IT UP, BECAUSE NOBODY CARES UNLESS THEY CAN HEAR IT, AND NO ONE WILL PLAY IT IF THEY DO NOT REALIZE THE POWER IN IT. Please argue with me my point, please. As this music dies with your ignorance.
Amazing how sound waves going into your ears can result in water coming out of your eyes
Especially with this one, and the "5 Variants of 'Dives & Lazarus'". English classical music at its finest.
That was me the first time I heard this music - I remember it like it was yesterday (it was in 1995)

RIP Neville Marriner. My first RVW experience was this recording. Just beautiful in every aspect; I'll be listening until my time comes.
Chris Tedd it was my first RVW too, and I can’t imagine ever becoming someone who doesn’t want to hear it one more time.
This piece introduced me to Classical Music. Stunning solo from Iona Brown. Beautiful sound from the orchestra. Musical balm for the soul and spirit. An all time great. Heard on many's a desert island !
Sir Neville Mariner 1924-2016...one of the greatest.
The very best interpretation IMO. Just exquisite.
Thanks Leland for bring me here. Tears are rolling down my cheeks, no words..

One of those transcendent, uplifting, beautiful pieces that should be in anyone's library.
Iona is sublime in this. It evokes England as we know it should be! She was also a lovely person - very much missed.

Thank goodness for this, mine is in a lock up ! Unsurpassed version IMO.

Iona Brown - sublime.
I want to finish my last life while listening to this song under the cherry blossoms in full bloom and wrapped in the storm of the falling cherry,s petals at the shining night of the fullmoon . 🍎
It was mentioned in a book I was reading. It fits its name perfectly, and makes me smile.
What can you say ? Mere words are no match for the beauty of this piece of music. I'm flying high looking down on englands green and pleasant land. A summers day among rolling hills.
Been a few years since I heard this version. Without wanting to sound crass, it takes me to new heights. Just breathe and fly.
Thank you for this posting. I have the CD and it has bought me years of reflection and shalom. Iona Brown...rest in peace.
One of the all time greats for all good violists to play. So beautiful to listen to and I can hardly describe what it like to play - almost religiously sublime!
.......as close to perfection as i think we will ever get...........
Leland Sklar brought me to this version featuring Iona.
Truly uplifting.
RIP Maestro!
Beautiful
Thank you for uploading this exquisite recording by the late Iona Brown and Neville Mariner .
Sir Neville Marriner is still going strong at 90.
The comfort of this music is irreplaceable
I feel as if my soul is being sucked away
This song purifies the human soul .
My heart wavered with emotion
I once did a thought experiment, trying to imagine a world without this piece of music in it. I ended up bursting into tears.
Splendid.

+duncan cook ps you're also right about our country losing is=ts identity; has been doing for 70yrs
As long as VW's music exists there will be Englishness, same as Christianity lives through Bach's music.

Ralph Vaughan Williams pastoral beauty does not get any better than this.
Nice work. Thanks for sharing. 🧡

Best version - I think I heard it on Your Hundred Best Tunes.
I never think of any national identity (probably excluding a national anthem) when I hear music..beauty of.sound transends all...
