Making A Corn Cross The Easy Way - Grow 2 Types But Only Have 1 Cross

  • Crossing 2 types of corn is very easy to do. In this video I will show you how to control which type of corn gets crossed, and which type of corn doesn't. In the example I show is this video, I'm crossing an ornamental flint corn with an ornamental popcorn.
    I planted both types of corn together, but I only wanted to cross one of them, and not the other. With just a tiny bit of work, it's very easy to make a controlled cross of two types of corn. It's so easy to do that I'm guessing this video will inspire a few people to give it a try.
    Not only do I show you how to do a controlled cross pollination of only one of the two types, but I will also show you the corn that I harvested and talk a little about the results.
    If you've ever made an intentional corn cross, let us know about it down in the comments.

    I’m not a gardener or anything, but I was curious about how people cross corn plants. I googled and came across your video! This is so informative and you used words that are simple to understand for someone with zero experience. Thank you so much for this

    Corn is some super interesting stuff and one we plan to go a little farther with this year. Most likely and hopefully if plans go accordingly then we will be taking out 2 shrubs(Angel's Gold Eun. and UT's Green B. Boxwood). That way there is a couple extra bins for Kiddo to occupy more of his own wall at the North. Probably corn and sweet potatoes and beans. LOL That variegated leaf type catches our attention every time. Good info. Thanks for the share!

    That's a very interesting experiment. I've never done anything like that on purpose. I did have a Brad's Atomic Grape tomato cross pollinate with a Brandywine shaped tomato I think. They grew next to each other last year. It was a volunteer that came up in the compost. I'm curious how it will taste when it ripens. I hope your cross pollinations turn out well. Have a great day.

    To detassel properly, hold the stalk low, grab the emerging tassel firmly and pull sharply straight up. It will detach one joint down inside the whorl and will not grow back.

  • @somethingboutgardening9532
    @somethingboutgardening9532 3 года назад +1

    So if you would cross white sugar sweet corn with an ornamental striped flint corn ,would the hybrid still be slightly sweet and edible when boiled? Nice corn by the way , and congrats on the 40k subscribers

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  3 года назад +1

      Thank you very much! I can't really predict exactly what you would get. The cross might not taste sweet, or good at all. That is part of the excitement of it for me though....the uncertainty of what you will get. And the nice thing is you could plant just a few of one type, just to find out what would happen.

  • @leeweber85
    @leeweber85 3 года назад +1

    Instead of cutting the tassel, you could likely
    just pull it out with your hand. Grab the leaves that roll around the tassel and it should all just pop out (as long as it’s done early enough before the tassel fully grows). At least that’s how we do it when detasseling seed corn. :)

    • @MidwestGardener

      It's hard to say how it will impact the taste. I'm guessing they will still be sweet, but they might taste slightly different than either parent.

    I have a love/hate relationship with growing corn....I can grow it and they always grow great....but eating them not so much 🤨. I guess I just don’t pick it at the right time so lately I’ve just been growing ornamental corn but gonna try normal corn again this year if I can get on top of the bunnies and mice 😡

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  3 года назад

      I really haven't grown sweet corn much. I've heard it can be a bit tricky to pick it at just the right time. I have been interested in popcorn for a few years, and that has been interesting for me....so far. Good luck with yours this year!

    Your comment early in the video about popcorn crossing with sweet corn may not always hold true, though it should still be assumed when working without a detailed knowledge of the genetics of the varieties you're working with. There exist incompatibility genes in corn that prevent cross pollination in some cases. My understanding is that at least some commercial popcorn varieties already exploit this sort of incompatibility. Here's a research paper (note: very technical) that discusses one such gene: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6131150/

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  3 года назад

      Thanks for the information. I am definitely working without detailed knowledge of the genetics I'm working with. Very technical reading tends to cause my eyes to glaze over. I'll try to remember to check it out when I find some extra time. Thanks again!

    Typical example of selective breeding. This’s how we’ve got many of our domesticated crops like carrots, corns, eggplants from their wild varieties. Thanks for the video. Cheers!

      @MidwestGardener  3 года назад +1

      Yes, I hope that I get some desirable qualities to work with, but you never know. It's interesting to think about how far some things have come for their wild origins.....even some domesticated animals.
