Ben Hogan Coat Hanger Trick

  • Several Malaska Golf Members have had questions about Ben Hogan and what he did with his clubs. Ben used to take a coat hanger and measure the length of the club handle against a metal coat hanger. He would then clip off the hanger, just barely the length of the grip.
He would then put that on the back of the club shaft and tape it on the club handle. Mike demonstrates this. Ben did this because when he gripped the club, he could feel a ridge on the handle with his fingers. Mike shows how he put the club in the crease of his fingers where the second knuckle of the hand is. Mike closes his hand over the club and grips it.
This is a really great way to get a feel of putting your hand on the club. The coat hanger helps you feel the ridge in your fingers. When you have a round handle, it’s hard to feel the back of the club relative to your hands.
Hogan also set the hanger a little off-center so that the clubface was slightly open when he gripped the club. This is a great way to feel the club in your hands.
Some companies like Lamkin have a reminder grip on the handle; however, they show the handle going into the third crease of the fingers instead of the second crease. It is the second crease where your knuckles are. When you wrap your hand around the club, you have the strongest finger-hand lever system you can create in the golf swing.
Using a coat hanger is a great tool to help you practice and feel the back of the club shaft with your fingers.

Mike you have taught me alot, grateful to you...
Do you think Ben Hogan apply "pivoting of club" you have addressed in detail, exceptionally well?
My take is, that is why Ben Hogan feels unfamiliar and hard to us...
What do you make of this?
    Thanks alot...

Ain't that the truth. Your probably better off going to lowes or depot and buying some hot rolled steel and using that. I live in the sticks and we don't have things like dry cleaners or laundry services to get the metal hangers from.

Golfworks grip ribs can fit under any grip. Coat hangers with thick wire might be against the rules. All club grips, accept the putter, have to be circular within a tolerance.

I agree... put a set of GolfPride 'Align' grips on your clubs. GolfPride nailed it with the Align grips. There's no better grip on the market. The ridge should be along the last joint near your finger-tips of your Left/lead hand. Extremely important.

Good video. I'll have to try this the next time I regrip. I am curious to why the dumbass in the ball picker rig felt the need to back up though. That's a very good way to break it.

If you are a right hand golfer and your left hand thumb is slightly on weak side (on top of the golf grip rather than pointed slightly to the right), wouldn’t the rib in the golf grip have to sit at approximately 1:00 in order for your fingers to rest on the grip as Mike suggests?
