  • This video provides some principles and exercises for exploring "soft connections" in multiple attacker training. Instead of using strength, technique, or direct manipulations like throws or locks against attackers, "Ghosting" relies on soft connections to confuse and mislead strikes and reactions.
    Specific exercises / principles include:
    - Ghost touch (hand-body, and body-body)
    - Steering attackers
    - "Jump-starting" stopped attackers
    - Spinning/turning attackers who are trying to face you
    - Target splitting

I’m going to translate this for my teacher. This is the kind of practice that we are trying to develop in Tokyo also.

as a short person, I won't be able to use the "steering" method? sucks to be me then..

As a short person, you have a serious advantage in randori and using ghost touch. I have a couple of senior students that have developed the irritating ability to "disappear" during randori using ghost touch and other tactics - irritating because as a "big guy" I can't seem to pull it off myself! Ghost touch does not require mass or force - in fact, if you try forcing your uke, they will quickly "lock down" or struggle against you. If you get good at just "sticking" to your ukes with no more force than the uniform on their back, they will move to safety (e.g. away from the other ukes' attacks) on their own - thus giving you another set of 'eyes'. Once you get good at that, then you can learn to appreciate how a very light push at the right time, or just leaning a little with your own body, can add the "steering" result. Subtle is better.
