    I always felt that I'm always a beginner when it comes to art. In the past 2 years, I actively watched your tutorials, received these particular classes on my own, & even before starting to learn on my own, I had to learn how to draw animals in college (Biology Major dropout here); I always felt I had lots of way to go. Just by looking at the skillset tree in here, I noticed the terms I need to focus on learning more are adv perspective, storytelling & character/creature/prop/environment design (also study more adv anatomy, my 2024 goal will be to stop being a coward of not wanting to learn where each muscle is). After watching this video, I realized that I've leveled up in a significant way & I have to feel proud of it! Thank you Marc! Happy new year to you & your community!!

So I wish to both you and me have enough determination to move from the dead point and learn something new about art and build a bit more courage in this art learning journey. Art is not a rocket science. Just a skillset, like any other. I mean it is hard to master, but starting off is way easier than it looks like. Especially with the guides like Marc

I plotted out my own strengths and was no surprises, but putting it into a tree like that showed me how skewed my skills were and in what area.
    Also, classless with drawing animals, I see.

    I love how to Marc's videos and teaching skill grows each time. First time i watched a video from this channel was around 2022. I was a total noob. Since then i've been learning and practicing as much as i can. I would like to practice more but university is consuming my life. Unfortunately i'm in a law carrer which is far from what i love: art. What i really want to do in life is illustrating a story which i've been writing, and being able to draw everything i like, so that i can share it with everyone and be understanded. In order to quit university i need to convince my family, which is full of close minded persons (i'm also kind of close minded since i've been persisting on my goal for years). I need something good to show and be able to say: "its ok, i can do it, it will be fine". In order to achieve my goal the videos that Marc-sensei uploads are the best. Really thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤❤

    I love the skill tree analysis and career path retrospective. I'm a visual learner, this clicked well for me. It's nice to have an A-Z path for a guideline and to hold yourself accountable. To be able to see it daily is a great motivator to stay on the right track and not take on to many fields of study all at once. I'm a white belt in art, not blue or black, don't talk on all 8 limbs at once.

    The hardest part is finding Motivation to actually start drawing.

    • @Badartist888
      @Badartist888 5 месяцев назад

      True. I must admit that I've been burnt out on my art journey a couple of times now. This time I really spent time working on why I didn't have motivation, why my creative hobbies were so mentally draining when in theory I should love them, how to develop good habits. While I can only really say what worked for me and you probably have a different bunch of things you need to address.
      Two things I found useful was the 50/50 rule (from Drawabox) where you spend at least half of the drawing time as fun free drawing and limit study to 50% of the time. The other is a book called Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg. Long story short, that really talks about removing barriers to starting a task you want to make a habit. So instead of doing it digitally, I set up a sketch book on my desk and can start really easy. It also talks about cheering yourself on when you start tasks and over time I've really changed my mentality by kinda faking it until I made it. Tiny Habits is all about how motivation is a fickle and unreliable beast and you have to arrange things in such a way you don't need motivation.

    • @RyeBreadFF
      @RyeBreadFF 5 месяцев назад +6

      What's helped me so far is limiting my time drawing to 10 min a day. Keeping it brief prevents me from getting to hung up on things I may find frustrating while also giving me enough time to experiment with new ideas and be stimulated in short, concentrated bursts. Some days I don't draw, but I do try to keep that 10 min rule when I do.

    • @billjohnson6863
      @billjohnson6863 3 месяца назад

      Agree, I do 30 minutes a day. Whatever works for you.
      If you want to progress you can’t rely on motivation because skills atrophy over time. So when you’re motivated you’ll move 5 steps forward, but then you’ll burn out and move 4 steps back until you hit the next burst of motivation. However, by then you’ll need to relearn stuff which is very demotivating and feels like treading water.

    Has anyone noticed that all three careers can be applied at once? Here is what I found out: My end goal is to make a comic book. In the beginning, I am doing "concept art" also known as reference sheets, to find the look and feel of the world, vehicles and characters. Having that, I move to doing the panel layouts, and each tell part of the story, it gets done with "Illustrations." I am illustrating the story from a script, just like when I had to illustrate stories from the text of a short story or classical novel. Lastly, I finish it up with a nice illustrated cover, oh man, it's comic book cover illustration. BAM! Got my comic book, I have created a comic book, or a manga if I decide to go that way. Really, Marc laid it out on the video. I hope others noticed.

    I've seen a similar video about gamifying learning to draw, starting from clean lines and shapes to construction and how to branch out, ending in complex anatomy and posing and coloring etc.
    I myself wasn't sure where I am until recently. Now believe I am at a point where I am understanding how to observe better and I know the basics of perspective and even some 3D shapes, but I need to go back to using perspective grids. I like how your graph helps me narrow down what I want to focus on. I'm on the way to begin some basic body construction and try to sharpen up gesture drawing. I'm developing unique ways of observing and understanding things. You're helping me quite a lot.

    One thing I've noticed and that many practicing illustrators need to hear is: Progress isn't dramatic.
    You may feel that you aren't making progress at all, and that you're stuck, and you suck, but keep doing it, and things will "click" into place without you noticing it.
    And it's not a dramatic moment of enlightenment. People miss the point waiting for such moments. Progress is more like: You try, fail, try again, fail again, for days, until you try, and fail, for more days... And then try one last time... And fail again... But if you compare your first drawings with your last drawings, the progress is real, and very noticeable.
    So, the key is consistency.
    Not seeing progress is very discouraging, especially at the beginning, but you're making progress, even if you don't see it, so don't stop practicing.
    Of course, when you feel like you're no longer failing, it's time to increase the level.

    Sorry to say but, 3 hour gang. Apart from that, I’m someone who gets very frustrated at art tutorials being complex & all that stuff, but this tutorial is really great thx so much!

    I've tried in the past to make meself one of these to work on and there's an issue that I ran into that's tough to solve. (apart from the one where I had no idea what I needed to learn in the first place). The 'skill checkpoints' are blurry, you don't know when you should move-on to the next thing. I'd like to share a couple of potential solutions to this (and hear some if someone else is offering). Bonus points if you know which sensei's work I got either one of those from. ^^ Wall of text time:
    >First option is open-world exploration. The idea is to learn vertically and go through the whole skill-tree several times, when you feel that you have a slightly *better understanding* of each layer. For this approach, it is important to consciously limit the depth at which you study any one point to 'good-enough for now' and move on to the adjacent ones or upper layer. Your goal is to get an idea of the lay of the land and how things work together, maybe fight a few mobs. Once you get to the top-tier skills at this level of depth and you can spot a few things in the lower levels that you can't recall or fully understand, this is a great time to start-over and do a complete pass from the bottom-up at a greater depth and maybe fight a few mini-bosses or something on this pass. Keep in mind that each of these passes can take weeks to months or even years and you have to do it almost every day (at least 10-15 minutes or so but more is better) for your memory to consolidate optimally. After a few iterations, you will confidently know when you have the skill to tackle the finall boss - Soldier of Godrick.
    >The other option I can add is to have a mommy-ship to upgrade. Choose an art style (or mix of art-styles, but keep it consistent for each complete pass of the skill-tree) and a time-frame (say, an hour or two, be generous) that is enough for you to draw a fully-constructed piece. Draw the best original, complete image in the art style you picked that you can manage within your time-frame. This is your mommy-ship. Now pick a few things you don't like and find the one that's a symptom of the lowest foundational-skill in the skill-tree. Work on that untill you can confidently feel that you have 'greater understanding' on the topic and your next drawings will look better in that regard. With keeping with the flavour of the exercise, constantly probe your confindence and you'll find-out when you're genuinely more confident - this is the point at which you draw another, original complete image within the same time-frame and art-style. This is your upgraded, fancier mommy-ship. If there are no more pressing issues on the lower-tier skills, go higher. This should be better for those like me whose skill-set is like a house of cards with many gaps that are hard to pinpoint. This can give faster results than the open-world approach but there will be more work to do and it still takes at least a few months for the big gains.
    At any rate, this is my backseating for this year. Have a great new years' celebration everyone and hope your next year is above average! o7

    As a manga artist wouldnt it be the best to have ALL of the skills on the skill tree? Maybe except coloring?
