I'm from Claremont and he was good friends with my father who also passed away over ten years ago. Just heard the sad news this morning. I don't live in Claremont but in South East Asia, but Claremont will always have a special place in my heart. I remember his daughter as well. It had been a while since he performed. He was quite a character used to dress up like a pirate chase us around. Saw him in Chico and talked to him after the show. RIP.
Well, it's he best one you can currently find on the Internet anyway ---- but I used to have a VHS tape containing part of ElRayo-X's performances at a Reggae festival at the Woodbury Ski & Racket club in Connecticut (which I had attended in person) and the version of Quarter of a Man from that show featured an extended bluesy guitar solo from David, unlike any of the other live versions I've heard. I gave that tape to some guitar playing kids in the neighborhood a long time ago and I've never seen a copy of it since, but maybe somebody still has one and will post it on RUclips. Being as it was a Reggae festival, the promoter who edited and sold the tape stuck just a half dozen Reggae-style ElRayo-X songs on the end of the tape, almost as as an afterthought, leaving out Brother John, Spodie, Hands Like a Man, Mercury Blues and the other rockers.
Thanks Mr. Dave. Your playing always made every tune better that you graced. In the end we should all be so lucky in our own endevours. R.I.P on the other side!
One the best musicians to ever walk the planet..Have been following David Lindley since his days with Kaleidoscope in the sixties bay area music scene..
I was so fortunate to catch El Rayo-X at ROTR in '87 (Jorge and Walfredo in the band then too). I taped their set (wasn't the only person). It's among my most treasured recordings.
Otis Gibbs posted a poignant remembrance of Lindley on his channel; and Henry Kaiser posted home movies of Lindley and he in Madagascar, playing and recording with local musicians for the World OutOf Time project (the movies are on the Cuneiform Records channel).
Wonderful performance and great recording. Love the band and, of course, Mr. Dave! I don't know how I have missed this for the more than 7 years this has been available! Thanks for posting.
Linley recorded a 1/2 dozen or so other Frizz Fuller tunes, including Aint No Way Baby, She Took Off My Romeo's, RagBag, Texas Tango, Talking to the Wino, and Tiki Torches at Twilight. Leo Kottke recorded one or two of Frizz's songs as well. Quarter of a Man is on my personal list of the ten best songs ever written. In an interview, Lindley mentioned other songs by Frizz that appear to never have been recorded, such as Goofballs on the Range, and Martians At My Window, and You In My Arms. PS, There are some obscure blogs on the Internet by people who knew Frizz fairly well back in the day, and they say that he did serve in the military but never actually left the US to go to Vietnam, nor did he draw upon personal experience to write RagBag, because he'd never actually been homeless.
@@MultiPetercool, David said at an ElRayo-X gig that the song was about a guy who came back from Vietnam without the use of his arms and legs "but he still gets around".....

looks like Walfredo Reyes on the drums and Wally Ingram on percussion. Jorge Calderon on bass, for sure. I would expect the Rhythm guitarist to be either Bernie Larson or Ray Woodbury, probably Ray (who I seem to remember as being taller than Bernie) but there aren't any good close-ups if him. I saw ElRayoX at a Reggae Festival in Connecticut in the early 1980s (the festival promoter put out a heavily edited, partial concert video, but I no longer have a copy, unfortunately). I do remember Smitty Smith was at the keyboards, Ray Woodbury on rhythm, but I don't remember a percussionist. Quarter of A Man was a major highlight of the show, and featured a slow, mournful, bluesy guitar solo from David; t hey also performed Davids own song Hands Like a Man with David doing a solo introduction on his Turkish saz, I wasn't familiar with the tune at that time (it was only available on the "Mr Dave" solo album as a Japanese import LP, or, later CD). I distinctly remember standing right up against the stage in the shadow of Dave's lap steel, I could have reached out and touched it , and getting my ears blasted from the Dumble stack that was only about 8 feet away when they tore into Mercury Blues!

You have neglected to mention the man who wrote this song (I'm a writer who takes issue with this regular slight - kinda like no one mentioning who wrote the movie that won an Oscar). It was written by former Vietnam vet Bob "Frizz" Fuller. Below are the song's lyrics. David Lindley once explained to me it's about an Vietnam war vet confined to a wheelchair - most of his lower body was paralyzed, so he felt like a quarter of a man. Mr. Fuller lived in the desert and used to bowl with Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, David said.
There's a quarter of a man in the market
With a quarter of a car so its easy to park it
He goes to the market he pays what he can
But he only pays a quarter he's a quarter of a man
Now this quarter of a man he got fired
The next damn day he got hired
The only thing wrong with this plan
He only makes a quarter 'cause he's a quarter of man
[Chorus]
Every day he's on the street
Too few quarters too little to eat
He's so little the people all stare
But he only pays quarter fare
Oh
Now the quarter of a man's on vacation
But he still gets his ration
When he goes to the counter he pays what he can
But he only pays a quarter 'cause he's a quarter of a man
[Chorus]

It’s not about war. It’s about part time employees and the business concept of “man-hours”
