  • One of the subjects that got me on the way to moving the camera for ICM was a spell making images of WAVES, In this video I give you some basics to try - no tripod needed!
    Going down to Bamburgh beach near low tide I try and achieve results I've got in past years...

    I am always in the sand with a 600mm lens for the waves and the shorebirds. I have a beanbag to set the camera on as a super low angle with Live View shooting. Often I find a low rock to keep the camera slightly above incoming waves. Don't forget your boots! Our Southern Oregon beaches have lots of creeks dumping freshwater into the ocean. Take the time to look up the tide tables, surf forecasts that the surfers use . . .

    I'm so glad I watched Photo Genius the other day and he recommended your channel. What an inspiration, I love the whole impressionist movement in painting and never thought it could be achieved with a camera. I am now working trough your channel watching when I can all of the videos. I'm also obsessed with waves, (unfortunately I'm 2 hrs drive from the nearest coast) and I can't wait to give this a go.

      Hi Peter. Thanks for letting me know about Paul mentioning me. I didn't know he had. I apologise for the quality of the early videos... 😱😬🤣🤣 Thankfully it doesn't seem to have put you off. Best of luck for when you get to play with the waves 👍

    What I normally carry for ground work is an accordion style mylar/foil windshield reflector that are used to keep a parked car cooler in summer. It is sort of like a plastic reflective screen. I use it unfolded to lie on, particularly in woods where biting ants are present. The screen also serves as a light reflector when a little reflected light is needed. I just fold it up and stick it in the back of my pants when walking and take it out when needed. It would also work well on a wet sand beach. I guess those reflectors are used in the UK also. They are quite common here in the US.

      Great idea! Yes I'm sure they're here too - though we don't need them for the summers 🤣🤣

    Next time I'm at the coast I will be trying this. The mono images are so evocative. I am afraid of the sea yet these images have a calming effect. I have been watching Fototripper along the Oregon coast. Spectacular wave action, although your vlog just proves you don't need huge waves to make an impact.

    • @andrewsgray

    Thanks so much, I'm going to try this next time I'm out at the beach with my camera. I live in the gulf coast of Florida so it waves are not big here either. This is a great idea for those days that are not as dramatic wheather wise.

  • @WalkingDevon
    @WalkingDevon 4 года назад

    Really liked your shots here Andy. I live on the Devon coast so if I'm not shooting trees, its the sea. I'll give this a go next time I'm on the beach. I don't mind getting my wellies on and getting in (safely obviously) but I tend to shoot down and wide for foreground so this is a good idea. I may also try and go shallow DOF to see what it's like. Drop the ISO to 50 and stack the ND's, might not work but worth a shot I reckon.. I sometimes take a 6x3 foot tarp on the beach to keep me dry if I'm sitting or kneeling, then put it in a plastic bag after so not to get sand or water on my gear. Weighs nothing and takes up no space. I'll be taking it for this though, that's for sure!
