I don't know why the award had to be changed to a tree. There are plenty of science fiction writers (that weren't openly and extremely racist, like Lovecraft) who the award could have borne the likeness of instead. H.G. Wells, Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, etc.
