roasted chicory is a very common product in belgian supermarkets, and the 'belgian endive' is very loved vegetable here. is it unknown overthere in the states? i have tried roasted dandelion in the past, but i roasted them quiet black (following different youtube-videos), maybe i try it again with your lesser roasting. we call this over here not tea, but substitue-coffee or - less friendly - fake-coffee. Thanks for the video and for the tip to harvest the roots in winter.
Roasted Chicory and Dandelion teas are definitely becoming more popular here. But only in the past few years. It seems to be more known in the health food industry.
Most of us in my household like "Cafe du Mond" coffee best - it's New Orleans coffee that is a blend of chicory and coffee. It has a richer, more chocolatey taste than regular coffee. We call decaf "fake coffee" LOL!
I did not know this plant was chicory. It grows on the sides of the road in my town (in South Australia). I used to love making iced coffee with chicory syrup, so I think I will see if I can gatter some seed to try and grow it in my garden and give this tea a go. Thank you Maria.
Be sure to correctly identify it before you harvest. It should be getting close to blooming where you are! Chicory syrup sounds amazing! I would love the recipe if you are willing to share it!!
@@NinjaChickens I think it would pretty much be all gone at the moment. We are having some pretty severe heatwaves here at the moment and its probably all been mowed over to prevent fire. I will have to keep an eye out for the flowers next spring or see if I can find some seeds communally. The chicory syrup was actually store bought, not sure if you can still get it here. I would love to have a go at figuring out how to make my own though.
I got it years ago from a company called Norpro. At the time, they only sold wholesale and I bought a bunch to stock at my apothecary. But, I've seen the stainers in stores and online since then. If you google Moon and stars strainer, I bet you will find it!
I've seen the chicory coffee in stores. Is it chicory oil or the tea ground up finely do you think? Your tea strainer is cute! Thank you for another tutorial! I vaguely remember hearing about chicory but didn't know it had so many benefits.
The roasted and ground root is often sold as "chicory coffee" in stores. So, that is probably what you are seeing. I've not seen Chicory oil sold, have you?
Hey Erin! As far as I know, there are no known precautions for drinking chicory or dandelion root tea. However, I would still run it by your medical practitioners first. ;-)
Thank you for this Maria. It looks delicious ☕️
Thanks for sharing this tutorial

Where did you get your Little strainer? That would come in handy for a lot of things.

@@NinjaChickens Thank you for getting back to me and also for the video.
Are there pieces of the chicory root that give you new plants next year or do you sow the seed each year?
My understanding is that it grows best from seed. It has a big tap root, so it doesn't like to be transplanted or moved unless it's a little seedling.

Nice. Can ttc or pregnant women drink it as a tea?
