Dr. Doug Lisle is an evolutionary psychologist and co-author of The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness. He and his colleagues (Jennifer Howk and Richard Seidel) have developed a revolutionary method for approaching life challenges and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. They describe their approach as Esteem Dynamics - an approach with clinical insights derived from evolutionary psychology.
Central figures having major influence on the development of Esteem Dynamics include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Robert Trivers, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered world-leading theorists in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world’s greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort, and weds Dr. Lisle’s 30-years of clinical experience to the deep insights into human nature only recently available via evolutionary psychology.
Dr. Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, and was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University. His research and clinical interests include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety and depression, the genetics of individual differences, and optimizing achievement motivation. In addition to his work with Esteem Dynamics, Dr. Lisle lectures widely on health and wellness.

Hi Chef A.J., I'm Audrey, who asked the question about the junk food at work, as a nanny. It was so sad. Their pantry was 3/4 full of junk food, and get this, the mom is a Pediatric neurologist. Well, guess what? I had sent that question a few months ago, and since then, I quit! Yayyy for me, it's just my pantry now!
Congratulations!!!
Good question, Audrey! Ya, congrats!
Recently, my husband and I watched the Netflix series "Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones." He is doing a low fat WFPB diet to reverse diabetes, so he's already on board with me. But, his immediate reaction was this: wine, olive oil and nuts are good for me! Of course, this is months into a Starch Solution diet. I wasn't happy! I agree with Dr. Lisle: people can learn about the Blue Zones, and find something there to focus on which isn't the most critical thing to work on. Plus, this: I felt sort of discouraged considering that having a tight community is so critical to longevity. Like most Americans, I don't have that. To stay where I am, I would need to join a church which means I would need to fake a belief I don't have.
Your husband is the perfect example as to why programs like these are not that helpful. Additionally they spread much unnecessary anxiety. I am sure you have plenty of community if you were really to examine it scientifically.
Dr. Lisle is the absolute best and his information is fully based on evidence!
Omg I am more grateful than words can say!! All my life i have been told that worry is always always bad and can directly cause disease - so I have spent too much time worrying about my worry! Thank you for setting me free finally!!!
I HATE that I was circumcised.
Best at what he does, which is why we keep listening. Thanks for the straight talk!
Chef AJ: I would love to hear more about Dr. Lisle's views on ADHD, particularly in relationship to executive dysfunction. He would probably call it "low conscientiousness" and he wouldn't be wrong about that! I understand that ADHD distractibility might have been beneficial to hunters in the past, but many jobs now require hyper-attention to dull, repetitive tasks. This is true even in the professions. How can we help people who struggle with this?

Love the truth tellers! Thank you! Fantastic as usual!
Thank you. Remarkably forthright on the Blue Zones, I've always had a niggling feeling that the 'solid' points about mostly unrefined plant food diet, movement from walking, gardening etc., clean less polluted surroundings were far more important than the fuzzy stuff of social relationships, sense of belonging etc. though fhese may have had some role. Circumcision too, sensible answer. The nanny's job good idea to consider a new job. Thanks for a good video.
Oh how I love his brain!
I can understand the woman who changed her behavior about food. I flew to visit my parents from San Francisco to Wilton Connecticut and I was at first conserved about leaving stuff in the car here in Wilton as I’m so used to having different habits in San Francisco 😊😊
Break ins. So sad

Why are you all hating on beans? 😂 i know nuts are very high fat, but what have beans got that we should avoid them? I thought they were a green light and starch based whole plant food??
Nothing wrong with beans, they're great. AJ simply cannot tolerate them, digestively.
I think Lisle's only point is that you don't have to eat them, there are plenty enough healthy foods outside of beans to still allow for a healthy diet if you can't or won't eat beans.
@@HidingFromFate got it! Thanks!
Thank you Dr. Doug. “The Blue Zone is in your kitchen. Period!”
Enjoyed the discussion very much! However,😉 I do feel that chronic anxiety, or even shorter periods of Great stress Can disrupt the absorption of nutrients when eating and may even constipate a person until they feel it is Safe enough to evacuate The bowel.
In my experience... perhaps others get diarrhea? But, I feel chronic stress Can make us more prone to illnesses/ pathogens also.
I always enjoy listening to Dr. Lisle. I share videos on my RUclips channel about how our family of 4 has been able to sustain a plant-based diet for the past 14 years. Listening to Doug Lisle talking about working on the environment, and about not chasing nutrients, has been so helpful to us. Keeping it simple is absolutely key for us.
Wow I love to hear that! ❤
“It’s the food!”
Dr. Lisle channeling Dr. Goldhamer.
I couldn't imagine a young man wanting to be circumcised. He must of been bullied or something or a girl told him it looked weird. I hate that i didn't have a choice and wish i was intact. Its there for a reason!
This is the best Doug I've had the pleasure to watch! I throughly appreciate his science based explanations.
As always Dr Lisle is incredible. Thank you Chef AJ for your show
Thanks for watching!
So entertaining and thought provoking. Both Chef AJ and Dr Lyle are the best at what they do...Thank you!
Wow! Dr. Lisle was in rare form. I run a Facebook Blue Zones Lifestyle group of close to 10000 people from around the world. Always I point them to diet as key to having a healthy body. Love Dr. L. He's so direct.
❤😂🎉loved it!!!
I think that Doug Lisle is to psychology what John McDougall is to nutrition: a ZERO bogus theories tolerance!!! I find it so refreshing!!!!
By the way I had not yet heard your comments (both of You) when making that comparison too!
Cheers 🥂 😂😊❤
I also cannot wait for their book 📕!!!!
And yes 👍🏻 to an audiobook tooo!!!!
Hey there. Missed the live listening to the replay. I dont always agree with DDL PhD and that's okay. His lense of seeing things thru evo psychology is farily entertaining.
I thought when stress hormones are coursing through the body on an ongoing basis that affects the immune system, and that could make you prone to break down in different systems. Ongoing stress like if you’re living in a house of clutter, and you keep planning on clearing the clutter, but you just don’t get to it…??? I’ve heard that ongoing stress releases cortisol, and not good for the heart ❤️ ???
So agree with the ADHD thing. As a classroom teacher I’ve seen kids who’re supposed to be such concentrate for long periods if they are adequately interested in something. Plus young boys tend to have a lot more energy to burn and as Doug says, it’s unnatural to expect them to sit in one place for long periods doing stuff they have little interest in: they’d much rather be outside playing ‘cops and robbers’ or something similar.
That time in my life I didn't like to share the way this questioner asks, is bc I was hungry. I was stuffing myself so full of low calorie density food that anything I did make, it was mine bc I needed it bc I was hungry. I didn't know at the time why I didn't want to share with my kids but it's bc I was unintentionally starving and I needed to up my calories.
Omg. Doug is on fire tonight! “The blue zone is in your kitchen “
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Makes a lot of sense.
I love this guy!!!
So refreshing to hear no-nonsense facts in a world of nauseating mumbo jumbo 👏👏👏
Love Dr Doug. There isnt anyone who I agree with 100% so I'll continue to glean from him. However, "Feelings Buried Alive Never Die" and people can die of a "broken heart" Unresolved trauma is a real problem that causes physical issues. For instance, studies show that people who experienced child sexual abuse are more likely to get certain autoimmune diseases. Cortisol, adrenalin, and other hormones most definitely effect all functions of the body and stress effects those hormones. PTSD has a PHYSICAL effect on the body. We are spiritual, emotional and physical beings. I am really surprised and saddened that Dr Lisle doesn’t agree but i still love him and Chef AJ is one of my favorite podcasters, even though i dont agree 100% with her either. People who get mad and unsub when they disagree with something are quite immature. What a way to go through life....letting ego get in the way and not capable of learning from others if you dont agree 100% with them on every little thing.

Great talk. Nice inputs to ponder upon. Always thought worry damages the system.
Waiting to read your book.
I am 67 and know that the starchbased vegetarian diet without dairy and extra oil, my running and tennis coaching boost my system for sure!
Choosing to circumcise self is like choosing to have your earlobes removed. A functional healthy part of the body being removed. Unnecessary.
As far as i can tell, this planet is going to continue to be a toxic place to live for a long time before things get better...
I’d recommend going to an elementary school and observing the kids in a meaningful way. You will see the ADHD. Re the boys vs the girls- often girls have the AD without the hyperactivity. There is an older book of research called Rethinking Attention Deficit Disorders that has excellent research.
Nathan Pritikin also said that during WW2, countries that had their animal products taken away had large drops in heart dieses and strokes even with the stressor's of war!
The Blue Zone is in your kitchen, So well said Doug. I knew I wasn't the only one who thought that stuff was a bunch of woo woo! I am all for all the great science and research though!
???? 11:16 am why are so many middle age women being diagnosed as ADHD?
Because there wasn't a more accurate way of diagnosis before now. I'm 68. There was nothing or no one to pick it up until recent years. Females present differently to males and it takes a skilled and educated professional to get a accurate official diagnosis. It's different brain wiring as well as the inability to produce enough dopamine. It ruined my life in several ways and in retrospect I see that and saddens me. Many also have Autism as well, which actually more of the brain wiring aspect. For a long time it was thought that A D.D was a male only thing. A D.D. and A D.H.D are two different manifestations. For females it is A D.D. the attention aspect without hyperactivity. So it's more internal.
That's me and my daughter

Normally love Dr. Lisle, but stress, especially in negative stuations, can definitely have negative impacts on yoir health. There is also good stress to help us get stronger, but i feel sorry that he does not have the broader acceptance of studies that show damage caused by negative physical or psychologocal stresses have an impact on physixal health.
Indeed, and the opposite is also true. Adopting a positive attitude in life can also impact our health positively. Dr Lisle is a highly indoctrinated materialist extremist. He should google the case of Anita Moorjani. He's not brave enough to look at evidence that contradicts his views.
Your feelings may be opinions and feelings which I agree are quite common but I think that most of what Dr. Lisle states is research based.
The placebo effect is proof that what Dr Lisle said is not true.
Isn’t it proof enough that:
If you’re stressed > you’re breathing shallow > fast, shallow mouth-breathing intensifies the stress the body is in > bad breathing has high impacts on mood, performance and all kinds of physiological factors.
So that‘s the very least stress does to us.
It’s not something to just laugh off, stress is a topic our performance-focused society doesn’t take serious enough.
@@CathrinCatherine No that’s no proof at all because it’s just a normal physical response like sweating.
Wow!!! Tell it like it is, Dr Lisle!!!
Around min 44 - the Blue Zones - you'll enjoy it. Advertising. Genetics. Blue Zone is in your kitchen. What you excluded is extremely important. Because I listen to shows like this, I get some crazy stories in my new feed. One story was about some multi-god-zillionaire, Ryan(?) something, who is trying to turn back "time", even convinced his teenage on to do a little blood swopping (blood is a dangerous product). He is currently 48 or 49. His regime includes getting up at 04:30, exercising, vegan organic of course, endless pillos/supplements... stops eatng at 11:30(?)... is in bed by 20:30. He looks awful, not a gram of fat on his body. My husband's ex-boss was really old - the original boss, every year he went to Sweden for a rejuvenation cure. Everyone used to joke that he was up there getting the blood of young people, he was a vampire. He'd come back a new man. Maybe the jokes were right?
Where did he get a rejuvenation cure in Sweden?
This billionaire definitely needs Doug Lisle because he has mental issues! I saw the article about hm and wondered how someone goes that far over the edge.
@@susanschylander6503 No idea. My husband started working for the company in the 80's. The big big old boss was extremely wealthy. Every year he'd go on his vacation in Sweden and came back like a new man. It was the joke that he was in a 'fresh blood cure". No proof that this ever happened, but that was the joke.
You remember the Tour de France with "blood doping "? That is potentially deadly. The riders were getting their own packed rbc and epo to increase their oxygen blood capacity. Why not a fresh blood treatment? I'm reading about it in CA. I bet people are insane enough to do it. We live. We die. That's life. Make the best of it.

Interesting views on ADHD.
Thank you Chef AJ ..love Dr. Lisle❤ what did he say about beans & potatoes? Wasn't sure what he meant, please.
Love this show so much! Thank you!!
HOW CAN I GET RUclips SHORTS TO STOP SHOWING ME ANIMALS BEING KILLED? THERE HAS TO BE A WAY TO CONTACT A PERSON TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS BRUTAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS AND THEN SHOWING IT TO A PERSON WHO ONLY LOOKS AT VEGAN AND PRO-ANIMAL VIDS. WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE THIS ANSWERED IN A SHOW. THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO, CHEF AJ!
Don’t look at them and instead look at shorts of interest to you and they should go away. If you spend any time looking at them, RUclips thinks you want to see more and will show you more.
If you're interested in animal rights, the algorithm might show you pictures or video of animals being abused.
I agree with the other two:It's all about the algorithm. Just don't click on that stuff.
You can touch the three little dots and report the video.
Maybe downvote them and see what happens
Hi! I see that you had the Eat More Plants creator on your channel a couple of years ago. I believe his name is Dawson Hawkins. I've been wondering whatever happened to him. He just disappeared. I really enjoy his content. Do you know where I can find him now?
I'm sorry, but I don't know
Thank you. But, I found you while looking for him so that's a definite plus! Looking forward to going through your videos!

My brother believes blue zones are caused by high iodine consumption. Him and his wife feed high amounts of iodine supplements to their young children.

Hello All!
Love this man!
I enjoy Dr. Lyle’s ideas but I do disagree with his assertion that there is no ADHD. As a former elementary teacher I can promise you that there really is such a thing and it isn’t subtle. It’s easy to observe. As to the cause…. Don’t know, but I know parents try all kinds of natural treatments, dietary interventions, no screens, exercise… and yet the behaviors remain in many cases. These behaviors interfere with normal functioning and learning. I don’t have all the answers but I feel it’s important not to minimize or deny very real learning and attention and regulation problems that children- and older people have.
The environment an enclosed room is not appropriate to humans. Period. Is not humans disease its school system disease.
That is what he said. It is a fact that it is manly young boys. If it was universal girls would have it more. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
I hope she was tryíng to make a joke about lying about going bowling. The advice to lie is sh*t. The question is why is he "nervous" to tell her this'? People have different interests. Who wants to be with someone 24/7?
How about the Movie Gaslight?
Chef AJ, I’m sorry your experience at a Bris was traumatic. We had both our sons circumcised by a highly skilled competent spiritual Mohel. For our family, this is a religious mandate.
Please stop using the word 'retarded' Dr Lisle 39:08, it's deeply offensive to people with learning disabilities, the same way the N word is offensive to black people. I've heard you on other videos using the same word :(
Retarded also means slowed down, I don't think that term has been used to describe downs syndrome since the 60's
It's the proper word.
