She's where I truly became a football fan.
Growing up my family weren't much into football. Of course I played it as a kid watched match of the day etc but never really had a team but I them moved to Portsmouth at 18 a friend took me to a game. Since then I've been a Pompey fan. The atmosphere was awesome.

A few clarifications. The mock Tudor pavilion was actually designed by Alfred Bone a founding director of PFC in 1898. He laid out the ground not Cogswell (as Wikipedia wrongly states). The pavilion dates from 1905 and was enveloped by Leitch’s South Stand in 1925. Cogswell did however design The Pompey pub (next to the main entrance pavilion) in 1901 (so the pub building is almost as old as the ground itself - alas it’s not been a pub since 1990).
Also the Milton End is the last permanent stand in the Prem to have not had a roof, but in the first couple of Prem seasons a number of clubs had open terraces such as Swindon, Palace, Fulham, Southampton etc.
Fratton Park will be the only ground left with two Leitch stands (the North & South Stands) still remaining once Everton leave Goodison next year.

Portsmouth born, spent two years living in Liverpool as a six, seven year old getting taken to Anfield and Goodison. Maybe I was too young but it didn’t work for me. Moved back south and around 1970 got taken to a game under floodlights at Fratton Park. That was me hooked, and fifty odd years later, the hairs on my neck still stand up for games under floodlights. One life, one club.

Great video of such an iconic old football stadium. As a Villa Fan I went there for an FA Cup tie in 1998 sitting in the open away end. Lovely sunny day when we arrived and then about 10 to 3 the heavens absolutely opened drenching us all. I remember when we equalised very late on with the steps soaking wet everybody on their way out at that point went tumbling down like dominoes

Yes, there are plans to build a new cantilevered North Stand but they want British Rail to replace their current footbridge over the rail track with a wider version for safety reasons. At the moment the club are not getting much cooperation from British Rail despite Pompey FC, Portsmouth City Council and the neighbouring Pompey Centre all willing to help chip in to pay for this change.

I remember my first season following Pompey was 92/93 when we lost to Leicester in the playoffs before Swindon Town beat them to be promoted to the prem. I was still a kid then and i will always remember the roar when a goal went in....living on Ruskin,Frogmore,Carisbrooke or Alverstone you never needed to watch the vidiprinter on BBC1 for the score you just listened to the roar of the fans and those pompey chimes starting up again. Thank your Ry for looking round the club ive followed for years and i hope you get to witness a game in the championship next year so you can hear a crowd that doesnt stop cheering even when behind.

I remember watching Jimmy Dickinson play at Fratton Park many times. In his day he was the fourth most capped England player, after Billy Wright, Tom Finney and Stanley Matthews. He was indeed a great player but didn't like signing autographs. After a match us kids would wait outside the ground for the players to emerge but Jimmy Dickinson would sprint down Frogmore Road and disappear up a side street never to be seen again that day.

I lived in Pompey 1989-93 and used to go the game occasionally. Good ground. They used to ring a bell (like a ship's bell in the fog?) Can't remember if it was just before k.o? Not massive crowds but a good club.

Selhurst Park had no cover on the Homesdale End when it was standing. I got a nice tan watching United beat Wimbledon in 93.
Fulham’s away end had no roof either. They put up that temp stand that’s been there ever since.
Technically Old Trafford also had no roof on the Stratford End as they used to give out rain coats in 93.
Maine Road and Wolves both had/have a temp stand in the corner of the ground which has no roof.
Stamford Bridge I’m sure had little roofing behind the goals before it was done up.

It's a bit confusing really. About a quarter of Portsmouth is on the mainland so only part of Portsmouth is on an island which as you say is the Portsea Island area. Just to confuse matters further there is also a district called Portsea which includes the harbour area and Old Portsmouth.

Have to say Ry,considering the rain we have had over winter, that pitch is immaculate,i kinda expected to see the heating lights on it,but not required. Advantage you have of the stadium tour on a weekday is the stupid practice nets are not up,so you can get photos of both end stands without the double goalpost charade. Disapointed they didnt keep the floodlights but you cant have it all.

So with the Tesco. Pompey used to own the land Tesco sits on and it was the car park but when Pompey needed to raise money to stay in business they sold the land . Hope that gives some context 👍

    • @pompeytheriddle
      @pompeytheriddle 11 месяцев назад

Not quite true. Mandaric owned the land around the ground under his Miland Developments company. That was all sold along with the club to Gaydamak in 2006.
When Gaydamak tried selling the club in 2009 to Al Fahim he retained ownership of the ‘Miland’ land around the ground. So the club never sold it, Gaydamak partitioned it and then sold in 2013 for £4m to Stuart Robinson who was a developer who the PST had partnered with. He was able to do a deal which allowed the Tesco to be built but gave the land behind the North Stand to the club.
