  • Kelly Clarkson & Cynthia Erivo’s “When you wish upon a star,” live on Kellyoke.
    This is my reaction, analysis and breakdown of Kelly Clarkson and Cynthia Erivo’s live performance of the beautiful ballad, When you Wish upon a star, on Kellyoke. This great performance really displaying beautiful tones and placements. I am a huge fan of this tune and I do believe it’s considered a jazz standard despite me referring to it as a disney song lol. I am really enjoying the straight tone we are getting, the forward sound, the legato phrases and the gorgeous, round tone. This song really gives these ladies the opportunity to showcase their timbres, but we still hear a little characteristic phrasing in their choice of vibrato and phrasing. Both Kelly and Cynthia are strong belt/mixers and great at riffing, but we don’t hear that much of those things here as it wouldn’t be appropriate for the style. I appreciate their tasteful choices and the way they stayed true to this style.
    I am a jazz/R&B vocalist, baritone saxophone player, music educator, and vocal coach local to New Orleans. I have two degrees in jazz/music education and work professionally playing music. Thank you for all the support on these videos! It is such a joy to create educational, entertaining content for you. I’m looking forward to making more reactions, as well as expanding on ways to create educational/music related content for all of you. I’m so grateful for every one of you!

    I love how deep you go into these. More Kelly! Question: I thought “tone” was natural - how do you teach that?

      @erikatorresmusic_  Год назад +7

      That is such a great question! A lot about your tone (or sound, or timbre, all words for the same thing: the actual sound of your voice) IS natural… but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot we can do to manipulate it! When I talk about brightness or darkness, or placement (bringing your voice forward or letting it come back) or even vowel qualities, those are all things that affect your tone! And these are all tools we use to modify our tone to get it how we want!
      The way I teach this with students is quite funny. We work on making VERY exaggerated sounds to access different muscle groups or places you can bring your voice to get a different sound. So we’ll sing some sort of scale pattern in a very exaggerated, kinda silly noise haha. Listening to a singer practice is not pretty! But it works wonders :) make sense?

    Hi Erika. I really enjoyed this video analysis. I laughed on how picky you were on their duet singing. You have to be, to catch any miniscule discrepancy between these two master singers. I agree with you, that tone is so important regardless of technique in determining a successful singer. You have a great tone Erika and you should demonstrate more often, instead of little snippets throughout your videos.

      Hi Lily!!! So happy you found it funny hahaha. My teachers were VERY VERY picky with me, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them constantly nitpicking! It really makes you better! And even master singers/musicians are still human, we all make mistakes :)
      But thank you so much 💗 working on a cover, they just take so long and it’s busy season I’ve been working a lot, playing music here in New Orleans 🎶🎷

    Beautiful Performance with a perfect old school Vibe. Very Nice Blending of their voices. Perfect pointers as always. It would be really interesting to analyse Mariah's Perfromance at Essense awards 1998 If only you knew/somewhere over the rainbow. there are some very interesting things she does there i would like for you to see and comment about more specific at 1:56 - 2:02 its a very "weird" /special and i think really hard Run/riff cause of the way she produce it.. the tone the texture,color the breath, like she change the register mid riff or something i can't even discribe it... more so to replicate it!!
