- Hello friends! I thought it was time to share a mid-year update with you guys and let me tell you this year has been a DOOZY! This is very vulnerable, but I feel it's so important to share that not every homeschool year will be perfect, but we weather the storm because it is worth it.

If you are new here, I'm so glad you're here! I'm a 3rd year homeschooling mom of 5 boys (ages 8, 7, 4, 3, and 1!). We have homeschooled from the very beginning when my oldest was kindergarten age, but even three years in I'm still learning about this homeschool mom gig. I love sharing a real and raw look at what it's like homeschooling with lots of littles under foot.

Girrrllll... I just wanted to say I FEEL YOU.
My husband works just an ordinary shift but its still a struggle for me this year too. So I have to tell you... give yourself grace. If you guys need a break... take it. You deserve it.
Thank you for being so honest. Its honestly so comforting.
I just love you Nikki. We were also struggling. My daughter was NOT HAVING IT with reading. Not. Having. It. So after fighting and struggling with it and her having an attitude all day for weeks…. I set it aside. I was putting her in time out over school. School!!! How ridiculous. So now we’re just doing math (which she loves) and working on hand writing. Mazes, dot to dots, all the fun stuff she likes. Because like another commenter said, it’s about connection. We do this to be connected to our babies. So if you take a break, good for you guys! All that stuff will always be there and there is no rush. Praying for you, girl. 💜
I have been there! Times in my first year or 2 when I would enforce discipline only to later realize how silly it was because the math lesson isn’t going to make or break them! Connection ❤️ this has been the greatest reminder that the connection is the most important above all. Appreciate the prayers & I’m so glad to hear I’m not alone 💗
My daughter is exactly the other way round, hates Math and loves reading and drawing. I also had to realize the same thing as I got really frustrated with her for refusing to do any maths...
You are not alone! We really struggled for the first couple of months this school year. We have finally got our groove back.
So glad you got your groove back! There is no sweeter feeling than sitting down after a successful homeschool day or week ❤️☺️
Love your transparency!! I feel ya!!
5 little boys!! You are an angel.
Hope you figure out what can help you and your boys in regards to homeschool! Maybe do lessons in the evening after your husband goes to work and the younger ones are in bed? My daughter and I are night owls so we could easily do that but I know not everyone is. Looking forward to your part 2! We struggle sometimes with just not wanting to do school work so I would love to hear what you are planning.
Awww....mama! You are in a very overwhelming year and I know that feeling very well. This year has been super tough for us too. I'll echo what some others have said; simplify. What is the most important to you? Choose that one thing and just do that for a while. Your boys are young so you have time to pair down to just the most important thing. Once that ONE thing is going well, add in one more thing if you'd like. Go slow. Sometimes we have to cut everything out to find what's most important. Think about WHY you homeschool and show grace to yourself and your boys. (Once our commitments are finished I'm going to take my own advice and scale way back too.) You are not alone in this!
Ha! I died when you started in on Sassafras. I ordered just the read aloud book to try it out because I had heard only good things. I wanted to see if my boys would enjoy it. I agree with you that it is very poorly written and hard to read out loud because of it. The only thing is...my boys are actually enjoying it! They want me to get the rest and I'm thinking, "Great! Now what do I do?" Ugh! (My boys are older than yours so maybe that makes a difference. But the writing....)
Thanks for sharing. So sorry to hear you’re in a difficult season right now 😔 you have a LOT on your plate! That’s so sweet your boys want to play with their dad all day…but I can imagine how hard that is fitting everything else in.
Homeschool curriculum is like food. When I make a gourmet meal. They say it looks good but don't enjoy it or even want to try it. When i keep my meals simple they eat it all up. When I began homeschooling I bought everything fun and beautiful and it went ok. It was like a gourmet meal. Complicated teacher manuals and Alot of hard days. Then I found Memoria Press. Lessons are age appropriate and questions are worth the time and effort. In other programs my son would point out how obvious the answer was and if he really had to do them. The child-over time with parents help- will understand how the program works and Mom has an easier time teaching. Memoria Press is not flashy ("gourmet") like Abeka, Bju, etc. It provides the "nutrition" your child wants when it comes to learning. Alot of the old stuff I decided to use for my free time. In a way I think alot of what i bought in the past is because I wanted it, lol!
I’m a homeschool mom too and my son hates doing “work” and prefers unit studies and experiments ONLY! So I feel you! My son is 8…. I feel like you and I are on the same page! 🤣
Umm yes 🤣 I mean I also love that stuff! But I’m like ya also gotta learn how to read, write and stuff 🤪
Oh man….I feel all the feels through this screen for you. I pray you find the magic again soon. ♥️ the load is heavy I feel you girl you are not alone.
That orange book behind your has a gorgeous cover! Would you please tell me what it is called?
It’s a beautiful book! I bought it from usborne but it’s also on Amazon. amzn.to/3fZCAs6
@@sixheartshomeschool Thank you so much!!!
You are definitely not alone. I can totally relate. Thank you for sharing and being so honest and real. It’s a lot to manage. Sometimes I feel like homeschooled kids who have never been to public school don’t realize how good they have it! At least mine don’t 😜. Hang in there, praying you find what works best for you and your kiddos in this difficult season ❤️
I appreciate your honesty! I feel like homeschooling moms can be so positive and unrealistic. I’d encourage you to find ways to leave the house. My mental health struggles the most when I don’t leave and spend time with friends. If you can grab coffee with another mom before dad goes to work, I’m sure it would fill your cup. Thinking of you & praying for you during this time. Being a mom is hard.
Yes! The Sassafras read aloud is no good. I have seen someone else utilize the log book and the teachers guide to put the units together. Since the teachers guide has all the answers for the log book, information for the experiments, and supplemental books to go with the unit.
Sassafras didn't work for us either. I wanted to love it, but we just could not get into it. Looking forward to your pt2 in what you are doing to move forward :)
Also 5 under 8 is hard. Kiddos take a lot of time and energy and love. Give yourself grace. Those other people that seem like they are doing it all often aren't and have help for them to make time for their RUclips channels. Many have family help or assistants. You are doing a good job. Make sure you are loving on your boys that is your most important job right now ❤️ I wish I could reach through the screen and give you a huge hug ❤️
Oh my goodness thank you so much for this 😭❤️ appreciate your kindness & support. It means so much! And you are absolutely right. I finally had to say okay CONNECTION is more important than us all stressing over the math problems. Again thank you, thank you, thank you🙏🏼❤️
Nikki, you need a rest. Take one. I homeschool two special needs boys ( my other 3 are grown). I have homeschooled for 21 years. I would love to talk to you. Simplify your homeschooling. Have you heard about looping and doing some subjects as group or family subjects?
I’ve been working through some ideas of looping or even block scheduling. My kids are so young that most of our school is simply ELA, math & writing. So there’s not much to even loop! Which is why Im thinking of maybe blocking our days…? 🤔
That sounds like a very overwhelming season. There’s so much on your shoulders::hug::
Our darn brains are so good at giving us evidence that a thing will be or not be successful based on our pasts, and what we've already done before. But the beautiful thing Nikki? Is that our past is just that. In the past. So, what could be different for y'all if you decided to ask the future you for help? What would she say? Thinking of you, momma!
