They were tiny little twigs with a few leaves on them. The guy I bought them from was Osama Gohrab. Now that we don't have the sailboat as a distraction, I'll be getting the trees going again. I was raised on a survival compound ."Moms" used to slow cook like this with everything in a flour sack. They had a squeeze "board" they pressed in on, then the run-off returned to the pot. The last time I processed wild lettuce, I poured it in a 9x12 pan on parchment paper after most of the water is out but while it's still easy to pour. I then dried it in my oven at 100 degrees until it was rubbery which made it easier to peel it off the paper. Some of it was hard to get off the parchment so I'll use a smaller pan next time plus I've seen some people use silicone and dehydrators. THEN, I rolled it into a ball, put in a mason jar & poured 80 proof vodka over it which will help it keep and allow it to be used sublingually. I usually use 2 dropper fulls.

I had some plants I keep in my flower bed. I harvest the latex throughout the season. I pull up the kids hippity hop, sit there with a piece of glass(from 5x7 ftame) and wipe latex on glass. Once it's dry, a day or so later I scrape it off and add the powder to a finished tincture or the finished black goo. I have to take a smaller dose for the same effect. The crock pot was my question! So thankyou for that. I'm standing at the stove for my 8th hour now making sure this doesn't boil. In an hour or so it's going to be done...praise God.

I've got lots of it on my property and although my leaves look more like others' wild lettuce than like yours, you were the first person who has said that the hairs on some of these are undetectable. That stuff with the yellow flowers you showed...that's totally what I have. I've known instinctively that this stuff in my yard was wild lettuce and needed to be used, but I couldn't find enough confirmation until now. Plus northern and southern wild lettuce can be so different that I needed a southern accent video to make sure I was doing it right. Thank you! Then he dehydrated again until it was a black goo. But he said the initial extraction into ALCOHOL pulls more of the medicine out of the plant. Just FYI for anyone interested in doing this.

I have so much of all varieties of the wild lettuce growing here that I don't have time to cook it all down right before it flowers. I usually strip the leaves and air dry them then vacuum seal. Wasn't sure if they could be rehydrated to cook down later or not but after reading some of the comments, I will try it as a tea & see if it will work. I am glad you confirmed my thoughts about the stalk having a lot of the medicinal properties in it. I thought what a WASTE to toss that big stem/stalk with all that medicine in it. I live just NE of Mobile, AL so it grows HUGE here as well. 8-10+ ft tall on thick stalks. I stay in my 40 acres of woods always foraging edibles, medicinals, and mushrooms (tons of turkey tail & chanterelles here in the deep backwoods & lots I can't identify yet). From my little experience, as you cook it down, you're left with a number of things getting concentrated, including, I believe, the sugars from the plant (might even be from the sap, not sure of the chemistry). When you cook down sugars, they caramelize the longer (and slower) you cook them. Nice job showing your process. I've seen people who 'milk' the sap by small cuts on the plant. Seemed like a lot of work to do this. I'll have to try cutting pieces in smaller chunks.
Another thing I noticed this spring, while getting rid of some WL from a garden. The roots weep a lot of lactucarium, and these were young plants.

When you get down to the end, why don't you use a double boiler lash-up? It's so much easier and you don't have to worry about boiling your product. I bought a semi-expensive non-stick fry pan (copper finish inside) for exclusive use of cooking down medicinals. Non-stick makes it ever so much easier to get all of your product out of the pan. Your last pan would be great for the bottom half of the double boiler. Fill your pot up with water, bring it up to a simmer. Place the fry pan over the water, just touching the water and cook. You need to match top and bottom, so the top pan doesn't fall into the bottom pot of water. They certainly don't have to be an exact match. I've sent you a link that shows exactly what I mean, starting at 16:10 in the video. ruclips.net/video/0sGWxz0DMSI/видео.html

Look at the video she linked you. Use the non stick green pan instead of stainless. Would be so much easier at the very end to pour out and just scrape with a silicone spatula.

I think I would take it out of the pot before it started sticking and pour it onto a silicon sheet to dehydrate it the rest of the way. Great info, thank you.

I like to dry my leaves, and put them in a high ethanol content alcohol like 190 proof to make an extract for a few days, then press the leaves to get all the juice. After that I cook down the extract low and slow, and use an oven or dehydrator to make the concentrated extract leathery.

Cool, thank you. I could listen to you speak all day. Yah there's been some new information about the compounds found in Lactucarium: Lactucin & Lactucopicrin in that it acts on the CNS (Central Nervous System). And, someone dumbed this down for me: the Lactucin acts upon the adenosine receptor as an agonist, where as Caffeine works on this same receptor as an antagonist. It basically (very basically! I am not a chemist) has the opposite effect of caffeine on the CNS. That's pretty neat!
