I don't believe the granddaughter at all. Even if Mildred had thought about committing suicide, ultimately she didn't. Nor does the granddaughter knowing her grandmother had suicidal thoughts change the fact that the granddaughter was the one restricting Mildred's food and thereby causing her death. It could be framed as a mercy killing but not assisted suicide, especially since the granddaughter implies that Mildred wasn't always certain that she wanted to die.
Starving to death is agonizing. Ibdont believe her this was a mercy killing. She could have done sleeping pill overdose or something else less torturous.
I kinda believe her because my grandma refused to eat at all after my grandpa died, she just didn’t wanna try anymore. I tried so hard to get her to eat it wasn’t until she fell down and went to the hospital that she finally got some help and started eating again.
If the grandmother wanted to die, by starving to death, she wouldn't eat regardless of having food given to her, so if she really wanted to die, particularly by starving to death, the granddaughter wouldn't need to leave instructions to the caretaker to not give the grandmother food
Literally! Old people when they’re near the end often stop eating themselves as well when they’re ready, my grandmother did that, she’d have a couple bites and feed the rest to the dog in secret. Everyone knew it was her time and that was her choice, but food kept being served to her in case she decided she wanted it.
The part I'm not sure about is the strict denying of extra food the carer tried to give. It should have been the grandmother's choice, each time, if she refused extra food. She could have said 'no' each time.
There's one fact that isn't followed up on clearly. The carer stated that the grandmother "was so hungry".... If the grandmother had been refusing to eat, that would have suggested her complicity in her own demise; instead, it sounds like she was cleaning her plate and asking for more, which suggests something completely different. The granddaughter's last statement (before she was cut off) implies Grandma's wishes weren't consistent. Bottom line, the granddaughter used their religion to "fill in the blanks" and should be held responsible... She should take the two years.
I would argue that dying of starvation is a way no one wants to go. So cleaning the plate is more of a pleasure/fear thing than a sign of wanting to live.

I guess the mark of a good drama is being able to stir so many emotions and responses from an audience. These comments read as if this was a true story , it isn’t . Proves why this show was so popular.
If the grandmother wanted to die, you'd think she'd want to go peacefully in her sleep. That's often how most elderly people who are tired of living go out, either with Dr assistance (if terminally ill), with help from friends/family, or by themselves. Not starving to death. Which is one of the most slow and painful ways to go. Depression in elderly people is not uncommon, but most cases don't involve them committing suicide on their own. It's either assisted suicide (which would still be a whole legal thing) or assistance from medical personnel. If she really did want to die and wanted the granddaughters help, you'd think she'd leave a signed note or something. Assisted suicide is complicated.
I took in my aunt who had Alzheimer’s. She refused to eat at times but me and my parents made her. There is no excuse for allowing someone to starve to death because “they wanted to die”. That’s the fastest way to get into jail
This is why it's vitally important that everyone has an "end of life" statement written out and notarized WHEN THEY'RE STILL MENTALLY AWARE OF WHAT THEY'RE ASKING!! People who want their lives to be over after a certain point -- when their health is deteriorating, their minds are going or they're in uncontrollable pain with no hope of recovery -- need to have their preferences and wishes recorded and signed in advance. I have a Do Not Resuscitate form signed by my doctor and instructions for withholding food and invasive medical care in my medical files, and carry a copy of that form with me. I've seen what happens when relatives are determined to keep someone alive and force doctors to comply with their wishes. It's ugly, and not how anyone would choose to live out their final weeks or months.
They putting the emotional music, completelly ignoring the fact that this girl tried to frame and deport an innocent woman, is sending me. Like, she didn't have to do all of this, she could've just said her grandma refused to eat, and she didn't want to upset her
The thing with the grandma… if she was adamant about wanting to die, the hospital would have been the place to go. Yes, agree to pain management but she could always label herself as DNR if she were to have a heart attack or something like that. Then she could go on her own terms. Maybe?
1:20 That phone record should have come up in discovery, not as a surprise piece of evidence to sandbag the defense. This is a great way for Stone to allow the heiress to walk on appeal.
If the girl wasn’t lying, I can understand her position. It’s hard when someone just gives up. I think this is why we need to be more open about end of life care in the US. A patient can get palliative treatment.
I think this is up there with the worst lie I have ever seen on L&O. It doesn’t make any sense on any level. She lied for ages and blamed it all on a poor immigrant who did absolutely nothing but care.
You felt guilty that you didn't argue hard enough, so you get the maid deported? That's absolute nonsense! I'll tell you what you do. If someone's starving themselves and won't seek medical attention, you sue them for incompetence and take control to force them to. You don't just stand there and watch them starve.
I'm 74 and when my time comes I will ask God to let me go Gently And I understand completely how someone Could need a bit of help And I pray someone will help me if I need
I don't know what to think, honestly. The granddaughter is sus but also how do you starve someone to death long distance? The grandma spent most of her time alone or with the caregiver. At any time she could have called for help or told the caregiver what was happening. Why didn't she seek help if she was really being starved? Why did she ask the priest if starving herself would be suicide? Why did she buy a burial plot? She was obviously lucid enough to make transactions, she would've known what was happening to her.
Many seniors don't want to "make trouble", first of all, including calling a doctor, etc. Second, many people of that age group buy burial plots before they need them.
My great aunt did the same thing as Mildred Bower back in 2017. She had dementia, had lost her husband and both her sons, and had pushed most everyone else away. It was a slow, painful end for her and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, Catholicism, especially traditional Catholicism, is very fucked
When you starve your body starts to become weak, and it hurts so bad. You start being less hungry. When that happens your organs start to shut down. It's the worst thing to imagine
7:30 "I'd do two years in Attica happily if I walked out at 25". Is he aware of prison conditions? If you're lucky enough to survive two years and make it out, will you ever overcome what prison did to you physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually? As for the plot, I think it's ridiculous that she hid the "suicide" to save her grandmother's rep, and instead go on trial for murder. But to me what may have been the bigger crime is trying to deport someone so they wouldn't testify.
For everyone saying that if the grandma wanted to die she wouldn’t have chosen starvation, I think that the conversation she had with the priest gives an explanation to that. I am not saying this is cut and dry. There is a lot of gray here. Even if she didn’t starve herself or not, it was revealed that she was anyway in a lot of pain constantly. I don’t think we can begin to understand such a situation without actually experiencing it.
When my mother was getting older, and had lots of little strokes, she began to lose parts of her memory. Medical personnel began suggesting that I lie to her. I told them I never, lied to my mother and wasn't about to start, even if it would make things easier for me. When she thought her pets were still alive and waiting for her at home I didn't tell her the truth. Thus later, when she remembered that they had passed on, I didn't feel like a monster for lying to her, and she was not confused by my lies.
The g-daughter did it. She started to stray into a questionable area when she said “she was very clear about what she wanted and then sometimes…”. That’s when her lawyer put her hand over her client’s hands and said, “We’ve taken the deal.” as Stone is inquiring, “And then sometimes?” The g-daughter’s lawyer knew her client had starved her grandmother and kept her from doctor appointments to conceal her g-mother’s condition.
okay y'all hear me out- if the grandmother was STILL supposed to be on the low protein/water diet, she may have been asking for more food to PURPOSELY aggravate the pneumonia- and when that didn't work she decided to do the opposite
@@alexisdiva9 I don't think a felony conviction with sentence served would prevent acceptance to law school. I think she was lying and deliberately killed her, likely cause she was getting so caught up in her lies and she didn’t want to be caught.
It wasn't made clear in this clip, but the daughter left notes for the caretaker to severely restrict her grandmother's intake of food and water. Here she is saying she tried to get her grandmother to eat more. I call B.S. She got off easy.

I support medical institutions and assisted suicide. In certain lifelong and terminal circumstances, people having the right to die in their own terms is most humane and dignified way to depart. I realise this isn't really an option for those who are deeply religious but everyone should still have that option if they so choose.
Is it bad I don't believe what the granddaughter is saying? The tone she has shows she's trying to lie her way and knew she did the crime of starving her grandmother. The caretaker was worried and made sure that old woman was fed. I think the granddaughter starved her grandmother so she can take the apartment or any fortune Mildred owned. Greed can make people do unthinkable things that soon come to regret.
Actually most if the time for Catholics suicide is considered an action of mental illness or a part of an altered state in which one is not responsible for one's own actions. However the careful planning and execution of one's own death like we would see in this case would be considered a thought out killing. This would be against the commanment of killing or the more direct translation of not committing murder even if one is murdering themselves.
A good reason to keep religion away from the important aspects of life. It should be a tool to help with life. Life should not be the tool to satisfy religion. If belief and faith is all it takes, why beleive suicide is a sin? Why would you suffer in your old age if hell exists? Is the suffering during life not a punishment? Is it only so in hell? That's what this story ends up being! Not an old lady dying and her granddaughter possibly letting her die, but where she is being buried and whether she goes to hell! WTF! This is so absurd! People are so adamant about refusing to change to help out the environment a little, but suicide is a sin!

To non-believers like me, it's ridiculous and horrific and irrational and inhumane. Btw two of your sins are commandments, so those are proscribed. But raping children didn't make the "Top 10" - I guess "don't take things" and "don't lie" were more important.
I have no idea what priests in the US are thinking. Here in Ireland it happens and there's no problem on the priests side. Sadly, suicide is on the rise and from sad personal experience,I can say that I've never heard of someone being refused by a priest for a burial. I'm not talking about years and years ago but only from my own experience,so since the 1970's. I'm not a practicing Catholic but I do acknowledge that a burial is important for the families of tragic loss.
smiles softly.. the technicalities of the Roman Catholic church..
Uhh since when? It seems you're jumping to conclusions without considering the reasons. How is the Priest awful? He buried her, you moron
0:28 Stone barely opens his mouth but gets a whole sentence out
Truly a talented man
shawn murray maybe he was just breaking balls
If she wanted to die why would you limit the food? Water? Or the extra food? if granny wouldn’t eat ?
If the old lady wanted to die I'm pretty sure that she'd tell the caretaker too
I guess the mark of a good drama is being able to stir so many emotions and responses from an audience. These comments read as if this was a true story , it isn’t . Proves why this show was so popular.
well .. L&O is a scripted TV show, but based in TRUE facts that happened in real life
I wonder what she was going to say about her grandmother had the lawyer not stopped her at the end. What happened other times? 🤔
"other times..." yikes, she killed her.
Assisted suicide is complicated.
regarldess of whether the grandmother wanted to die, its pretty horrid that she tried to get the maid deported. she wouldve ruined her life.
Faith has its virtues for some, but misery for all living in contact, to extremes with it.
Lawyers can’t just spring new evidence while a trial is in session, the defense needs to be aware of it ahead of time so they can prepare
Easy appeal win lol
Thank you. I was saying this to myself too. I'm not into law but LegalEagle has ruined a lot of trials on television for me lol.
@@joshualoreto3025 Yep. He's the reason I knew that new evidence bit was not accurate.
They can if they know it will change the outcome .. DUH
Evidence is always admissable during trial, the opposing side just has to have notice so they can prepare.
My favorite character was always adam schiff. He was cunning and knowledgable and such an awesome actor
"I'd do two years in Attica happily if I walked out 25.". Adam was such a card.
Stephen Hill once said he had the easy job on the show. All he had to do each episode was to sit in his office, drink scotch and be sarcastic.
ha ha .. that's assuming you survive
Well, look what happened. Now he's a congressman and he looks 30 years younger than in this clip
I think these would be better if shown as full episodes. This was a really good show.
Probably to avoid copyright strikes, and YT is notoriously bad in that regard, relying on an automated system that's easily abused.
Reminds me of those people that kill their spouses because divorce is too grave a sin ..but murder is alright ..yup ..
I gotta tell ya, the editor on these supercuts is great.
Thank you for posting this follow up.
I don't believe the granddaughter.
Like, she didn't have to do all of this, she could've just said her grandma refused to eat, and she didn't want to upset her
“Other times…” ah those two little words. They said so so much.
This girl is wicked I gave everything to cared for my grandmother until she passed away
At some point life and pain become synonymous. Not even the largest joy can make the pain of living worth going through at that point.
So as her granddaughter she couldn't give her grandmother the comfort and saying she had a family that wanted her to live for? Oh my God.
6:21 Adam is pretty much on point here.
I'm 74 and when my time comes I will ask God to let me go Gently And I understand completely how someone Could need a bit of help And I pray someone will help me if I need
I love my Memere very much ❤ The thought of anyone starving their grandmothers to death makes me sick with rage! 🤬
It was a slow, painful end for her and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, Catholicism, especially traditional Catholicism, is very fucked
yep .. based on mythology
If she wanted to end her suffering why did she kill her in such a painful way...
Weakness to commit? Maybe this way she felt she had some separation to it. “I didn’t kill her the lack of food did that.” Pretty twisted person.
There you are, 2 years ago I bought a cemetery plot, wake up 1 morning I'm depressed, skip lunch, ur gonna lock me in a room and starve me
When you starve your body starts to become weak, and it hurts so bad.
I have an art teacher who talks like Stone🥳
For everyone saying that if the grandma wanted to die she wouldn’t have chosen starvation, I think that the conversation she had with the priest gives an explanation to that.
I am not saying this is cut and dry. There is a lot of gray here. Even if she didn’t starve herself or not, it was revealed that she was anyway in a lot of pain constantly. I don’t think we can begin to understand such a situation without actually experiencing it.
Apostasy is the only sin that's not forgiven.
She murder her grandmother and frame the grandmother nanny
When my mother was getting older, and had lots of little strokes, she began to lose parts of her memory. Medical personnel began suggesting that I lie to her. I told them I never, lied to my mother and wasn't about to start, even if it would make things easier for me. When she thought her pets were still alive and waiting for her at home I didn't tell her the truth. Thus later, when she remembered that they had passed on, I didn't feel like a monster for lying to her, and she was not confused by my lies.
You can't be forgiven for lying if you're not sorry...
Best comment by Adam Schiff at the end -- "I'd do two years in Attica happily if I [could] walk out at 25 [years old]"
I once did a play with the woman playing the judge. Funny lady.
This is what happened to Mom. Life imitating art.
Never trust someone who cant pronounce Empanada
This is about 40 years out of date. The Catholic Church hasn’t forbidden funeral masses and standard catholic funerals for most of my life.
27 actually
It was filmed in 1993
What's the point of watching when the episodes aren't available to stream.
You know why they denied the grandmother food and water? Because then there is less clean up for bowel movements and urination.
This theme makes me imagine Ted adding words
What episode is the next please thanks
The g-daughter did it. She started to stray into a questionable area when she said “she was very clear about what she wanted and then sometimes…”. That’s when her lawyer put her hand over her client’s hands and said, “We’ve taken the deal.” as Stone is inquiring, “And then sometimes?” The g-daughter’s lawyer knew her client had starved her grandmother and kept her from doctor appointments to conceal her g-mother’s condition.
DA Adam Sciff got a fantastic closing line!
It's Schiff. Adam Schiff.
The last statement was perfect except they cut it off - it was if i walked out 25 with my own apartment
okay y'all hear me out- if the grandmother was STILL supposed to be on the low protein/water diet, she may have been asking for more food to PURPOSELY aggravate the pneumonia- and when that didn't work she decided to do the opposite
*Is that SJP's sister?*
And instead of arguing harder I decide to tell the illegal caregiver to starve her with directions on exactly how
Awww the poor granddaughter -- she plead to 2 years in jail. She just lost the cozy Manhattan Rent-Controlled Apartment that she coveted.
Also wondered what repercussions this would have had on her ability to enter law school once she served her sentence?
@@alexisdiva9 I don't think a felony conviction with sentence served would prevent acceptance to law school. In fact, if she is motivated, she could complete a lot of her college course work while in prison, making it easy to complete law school once released. The issue is whether any prestigious law firm would HIRE her with a felony murder record.
Actually, it's the goddamned Daly City paramedics who refused to take my mother to the hospital!
I want a series based off of this priest/detective.
How do you ask for forgiveness after committing suicide ?
Great Gonzous In that case we can commit all the sins we want and then when God comes we ask Him for forgiveness .
You can't. Hence why you won't be forgiven
Good Scene!!! 💯
No one ever seems to get down in writing or recording the deceased person's wishes. How convenient.
Ah yes, the old highly illegal suprise evidence lol.
This was a Good one Jerry Orbach had me hollerin w line about his old father paranoid thought his Mom was poisoning him n flush food and was eating bird seeds 😂😂😂😂😂😂 he said if I ever drift that far please take my gun n blow my brains out!! Still Lmao 😂 and the upright Irish Catholic bf grandma thought she was dating n had blk dude stashed in bedroom he said Blk Irish! 😂😂😂 he had some gems God bless n rest his soul!!
None of this explains why she called ins on the maid. That is such a cold heartless thing to do no matter how she spins it.
I’ve worked with people who are near the end of their life. The whole ‘she could’ve used the phone’ is BS. She likely would’ve been so delusional she wouldn’t have known it was there. Also, the little details like moving the food around to look like it was more suggests intention to kill. I think she was lying and deliberately killed her, likely cause she was getting so caught up in her lies and she didn’t want to be caught.
"Suicide is the only sin that can't be forgiven."
Not true -- according to the Bible.
You can be forgiven of killing dozens of people…but not yourself. Gotta love religious logic.
It wasn't made clear in this clip, but the daughter left notes for the caretaker to severely restrict her grandmother's intake of food and water. Here she is saying she tried to get her grandmother to eat more.
I call B.S. She got off easy.
I know this is a tv show but this kind of thing happens in real life how can anyone be evil and starve their family member to death it's disgusting and disturbing.
People who abuse/neglect the elderly, children, the disabled and animals are so fucked up. It’s wrong either way but those types of cases really are insane
I bet this is more complicated than the information they have!
I can't correct or make anymore playlists or complaint reports!
I'd also do 2 years if I could walk out at 25...me and the DA think alike.
