This series was an last minute arrangement as RSA was scheduled to tour in '75 but obviously that was abandoned & they made room for the first World Cup along with a 4-test Ashes as 'insurance' against the WC being a financial flop. This put the Ashes out of sequence as the next series was also in England, 2 years later. England played an Ashes series in Australia in 1978-9 when Australia couldn't field their best team due to WSC. After the compromise with World Series in 1979, Australia asked England to tour in 1979-80 to help with the reconstruction & they played 3 tests but refused to recognize them s an official Ashes series. The English unilaterally decided to not put them on the line as they held them whereas Australia did in 1975. Poor form.
