Back to Gilligan's! I was just e-chatting with Denny Craswell, co author with Jim Donna of 'Liar Liar Pants On
Fire' by their band, 'The Castaways' from 1960s Minneapolis MN, about the immortality that being featured in a Gilligan's episode ( with the women performing as The Honeybees) wil give the song. Even as fans of one-hit wonder music fade and dwindle, the seeming immortality of Gilligan's Island as a show, keeps everything associated with the show living long long long into the future, outliving ALL of us. Clever to use the dungeon set in these 3 episodes...I like how they cleverly write in ways to be off-island.

The funniest scenes to me in the Boris Balankoff episode was when the professor and Mary Ann get their personalities switched and she's walking around all serious and stoic while he's going around all daintily! Haha!

Rick, I absolutely LOVE the way you tie things together and even take it a step further and talk about "real life" things showing up in dreams! Wouldn't it be cool if that was in the head's of the writers as well! Another great job! Keep up the GREAT work you are doing!

I loved all these shows you have listed. When I was a child, I got to meet Randolph Mantooth and Kevin Tighe from Emergency!
As well as Martin Milner and Kent McCord from Adam-12. They were at Car Shows back in the 70's. I think some boat shows, too.
I remember The Shirelles performed at the one Mantooth and Tighe were at.

    Hey Rick.
TY for bringing all this to our attention. I have watched and rewatched - and rewatched - this series so many times over the years. But never noticed how the "Dungeon Set" was reused in those episodes you mentioned here. Guess it's a case of "not seeing what's right in front of your eyes." LOL !!! Thank you for offering the video to us, too. I've never seen that whole "rescue" movie before even though I've seen the whole series as many times as I have. So, it'd be a nice gift. TY again.

@@ricknineg I just came along to your RUclipss. Love 'em to say the least. Movie sets, etc. are/have been a big interest to me. Was to CA, on my way to a wedding in summer 2019, and went to Universal, Warner Bros and Paramount and was in heaven. First two, I took the most expensive tours and Paramount the cheaper of the two. The most expensive one had no more room. Have you heard about Sony and the other tour's? I can't remember the other studio name now. When I am out there, again, I will go to the more expensive Paramount one.
On a side note, pls put the Amtrak California Zephyr train ride on your future travel plans. I went from Chicago to Emeryville (San Francisco) and the views of the west are SUPERIOR to say the least. A frd told me if it many years ago and I built it in the aforementioned trip as I live in South Carolina. I live in the suburbs of Charleston. The crew was just SUPER too. I wrote a complimentary letter, about the crew, upon returning. I just slept in the coach seat, as it reclines, and the berth was the cheapest sleeping accommodations and that price was not in my budget. It was $138 and Amtrak have me $100 off for applying for their credit card. $38 for that trip was a steal. Also, if you use your Amtrak card on board you get 20% off anything you buy including meals. Met a lot of people, at meals, in the dining car. Was a GREAT trip and I would not hesitate to take it again either.
After getting my Amtrak c/card, I use that in lieu of a debit card. Due to covid, I am racking up points galore as well as getting some travel point deals from them too. Earned points can be used for other things besides Amtrak if you are interested. They give a list on their website.
I plan on taking some of the other Amtrak trips too. I heard, from a formerprincipal, that the trip up the west coast (USA) has great views on it too.
Do you have any info or sites to look at on the Murder She wrote backlot sites, sound stages, etc.? I like any mystery movie.
We'll have to keep in touch. I am a teacher, so I have extended time to travel in the summer. I have to get going as I have some things to do. Great "meeting" you.

I'm glad the producers were able to reuse the dungeon set AND the mansion set. I do think it's a pity that the Balinkoff episodes (I'm pretty sure Balinkoff reappeared in Season 3.) were set in the reality of GILLIGAN'S ISLAND rather than as dream sequences. Because of this, the show was officially turned into a fantasy show, which it wasn't before. HAPPY DAYS did the same, I think, when it redid the closing scene of "My Favorite Orkan" to make Mork think Richie had just had a dream when he was in Richie's reality. I'd love to see that HD episode as it was originally broadcast, when it WAS a dream that Richie had.

@@ricknineg I don't remember one with a diary and a Japanese sailor. The one I'm thinking of is Gilligan is keeping a diary and all the people on the island are imagining all the bad stuff about them he's writing in it. And they keep trying to get the diary away from him and he gets sick of it. So they are all together and he throws it off a cliff into the ocean. Then, all the people except Gilligan are on the beach one day and the diary washes on shore and they get it and read it--waterproof paper and pen, pretty high tech, maybe the professor invented it for him, LOL!!!--and they find out he wrote all nice things about how great all the people on the island are. I just love that episode!!!

BTW… The correct title of the “vampire” episode is, “Up AT Bat”. That, along with “the Producer” are my top fave episodes! One more thing… It’s the Skipper who actually tells Gilligan that he saw a bat like that in Mexico, & that he was bitten by a vampire bat, & his little buddy absolutely believes him. (I’ve long wondered… Of Gilligan thought he’d turn into a vampire, thinking he was bitten by a vampire bat… Then, why didn’t he think he would turn into a fruit (No! Not “that kind”!🤦‍♂️), when he found out that it was a fruit bat?😉😁😆

The house and dungeon look familiar to me. If we want to play a game of continuity or what makes sense, I'd posit that the Dr. never took him to his island and switched minds, but kept them on Gilligan's Island and hypnotized them. After all, how could this fully built-out mansion exist on another unknown island and how could you transfer minds between people? Maybe, they all saw the same movie or TV show before going on the three hour tour, so in their dream state, they would draw upon that. Hell, maybe they attended a screening of a new movie or TV show. The Howell's may have been VIPs or investors, Ginger may have been up for a role and "the rest" were contest winners And after the screening, they were all treated to a three hour tour. Of course, Skipper and Gilligan would've needed to be at that screening, maybe because their providing the tour allowed them to take part in the screening.
How's that for supposing and retconning? I prefer to just suspend all disbelief and not look at any of this too hard.

  • @morganm9040

Never noticed the set recycling. But Boris Balenkoff did appear again when he hypnotized the castaways to become his servants and Gilligan drove around the island in the rattan car with pedal power and the rope belt. The car looked like a pre design model for the Scion xb.

Of course you did! I should've just assumed it, Rick. Great job with that episode. I liked and left a comment too. And even back 5 years ago, you signed off with your signature "Be Hopeful" message.

Another great segment! I did notice the same mansion set in the vampire episode but I did not notice it in the Cinderella dream sequence so thanks for pointing it out Rick!

I have noticed scenes using the same sets especially in "I Love Lucy" and "Gilligan's Island". I am pointing out that Boris Balinkov does NOT make an appearance in 'THE DUNGEON SET'. Igor is the only protagonist in the dungeon scenes. Good work Rick!

Nice thread but I'm going to say budget budget budget and not intellectual design is the reason for the set reuse. However tying all those threads together is really cool, shows great attention to detail, makes a great combined storyline for sure and shows your are a master of the Gilligan's Island genre. Well done!

Remember in the seventies I wouldn't miss any of the episodes such as
Japanese soldier , wrong way, bean stalk Russian cosmonauts, Radiation vegetable seeds, satellite that fell from the sky and Gilligan left the cover on the pot,
Giant spider that was in the cave Gilligan on the jet pack, Mr howl as the gold minor in saloon , Gilligan as the president, glue on the stage during talent show
Butterfly scene they painted it's wings, Polynesian headhunters, jungle boy , Gilligan being hunted down by the hunter with rifle, the scene they repaired the minnow with glue and the glue eventually failed on the beach and Gilligan was standing in the center of the mess , ghost with the sheet flowing mini submarine
Eva she was duplicate of ginger and left the island
    Some I recall great 👍

I remember seeing all the episodes mentioned. It makes sense they'd reuse the sets for a dream/nightmare
    sequence.

Dungeon Set... Rick, I had heard somewhere (maybe from you) that had there been a 4th season, the Castaways would have ventured off the island on occasion, only to return each time. Also, I believe Sherwood Schwartz wanted to make each subsequent movie after Rescue have the same formula where the Castaways get off the island, then somehow end up back on the same island by the end. I think that would have stayed true to the original series premise.

Going to Balinkoff's castle island is the only time the castaways got off their island.

I'll say it again, Gilligan's island is NOT something you pick apart for its idiosyncrasies with the intent to make it makes sense. It's comfort food in the form of entertainment. It's not to make sense of their situation. If anything, it's to come away with it positive sense for people who obviously care about each other. Rick's ability to find the trivia and minutia of the show is fine if you want to see it, but I can't imagine anybody wanting to know this much about it. I wish I never knew that Tina Louise wasn't a happy costar and Sherwood Schwartz made millions on the show and gave none of it to the cast. In the opposite light, it's good to know that Dawn Wells is exactly as sweet as her role Marianne and was life-long friends with Bob Denver and Natalie Schaefer. Again, I just don't wanna know too much, and I'm sure many others are un-intrigued by all the effort put into the dirt and Secrets. Yes, I can just not watch it, but I love what Rick talks about with other shows and movies so I'm subscribed. He keeps finding stuff about GI and it keeps being suggested to me and won't stop. UGH!

I also wonder if the foyer of Boris Balinkoff's mansion isn't the redressed foyer of Collinswood from Dark Shadows. I thought of that when you brought up Gilligan thinking he was a vampire. :)

I am wondering if those sets were built for something else, then reused for the Castaway's.

Gilligan as Fairy Godfather is kind of a precursor to his turn as Harold, Jeannie's apprentice Genie. Also the dungeon looks like it was reused on Star Trek. 🤓😎✌🏼

I admit I never noticed the reuse of that set. Although Gilligan showed the most crazy dreams Mary Anne had one too. Pity not everyone else's dream was shown. Gilligan was a spy, dictator , ship captain and boy vs giant.

Thanks Rick I just learned something about why my dreams are connected to hotel I worked at for 22 years. I got let go fired because I had surgery on same shoulder twice about a year apart. After second surgery doctor said I can’t lift anything over ten pounds. So I was let go. First year no problem into the second year I started having bad dreams involved with hotel. Here it’s 5 years later and still have dreams connected to hotel not so scary though. Any idea how I can stop them?
