Did you use that solution all over the shiny nickels in the beginning of the video? New to this. Are there natural methods to remove the rust and corrosion? This is very exciting!

    You've gained a new sub. I remember using the acid date indicator many years ago and it seemed to work pretty well. As you stated, don't do this to a coin that still has a visable date and always follow the instructions on the bottle. There can't be anything much worse than finding that you've destroyed a valuable coin by not following the instructions. If there's any doubt, leave the coin as it is and get some professional advice. It's ironic that you show a 1937 nickel in your video. I just happened to receive one in change from a convienence store the other day. It was in very good condition. It's hard to believe that it was still in circulation, but it's always a good idea to check your change because you never know what you'll come across, even today.

    JD, nice video, my Dad got into penny & all sorts of coin collecting, last night I opened a proof set from 1963 D mint, the quarter has so much extra silver on the reverse it if a the nickel is about 4 grains under what both should weigh together, it's still in the placsit but I cut them where no air would get in, I like finding errors like the 1987 D that's has 3 of every letter & date & has no copper & is Not Zink, as any serious coin collector would, there is no telling what you will find in pocket change, also using a old metal detector I found a 1, 2.5,3, 5 & 10 dollar gold & 2 Morgans, the gold was in great shape, the 2 Morgans I still don't have the dates, but both have CC on the reverse, the glass jar kept the reverses away from the elements, how I don't know, also I found a half dollar 3 feet away that has asphalt on it, this is the OLD halves type, but why it would be so close to a small gold stash & covered in asphalt & with the prints of a grinding machine on both sides after socked in gas for 10 days, I made out two dates 2nd & last, 2nd is a 8, last is a 4, what a waste just the thought of it being a 1804 US hald, it makes me sick to not know how it got there unless it was stuck on a tractor when I had my garden made up & he had stuck to the tire from a job where they dug up a huge hoard in Jackson, TN a week be fore he did my Garden & it cound have got stuck to his tire as asphalt was being repreocessed, wow what if?

    Just to chime in with a few helpful notes, a plastic lid from an old cool whip container, pringles can lid, etc can be very handy extraditing that thing to the sink. Uh, if that stuff is corrosive, GLOVES AND GLASSES!!! If that stuff is expensive, you can use a q tip and apply it. It would use up alot less of it to get the same job done. Probably 50% less or better. Definitely let that water run longer than you did if that stuff is concentrated! Nice coin platform!! Plenty of light, smooth hard surface. Your neighbors might get creeped out thinking you're watching them if they don't get a close look at ya!
    😆😆😆😆

  • @Poisson4147

    Using Nic-a-Date or similar acids to bring up a date is great for satisfying curiosity but not for increasing a coin's value. Nearly all dealers and collectors consider treated coins to be "damaged goods".

    • @Poisson4147
      @Poisson4147 7 лет назад

      +OsakaRose Thanks for your kind response. There really isn't any other way to bring out the date on a worn nickel, unfortunately. My own thoughts are that you should go ahead anyway. Dateless nickels are considered to be fillers or culls; the damage done by Nic-a-Date can't reduce their value any further.
      My cautions were aimed at people who thought that using acid would somehow turn a worthless coin into a valuable one. But because you know Nic-a-Date is just for satisfying your curiosity, I'd say give it a try and let everyone here know what you found!

    • @JDsVarietyChannel
      @JDsVarietyChannel  5 лет назад

      Yes, buffalo nickels are notorious for having the date and lettering worn off. They were circulated heavily for many decades, and the detail is raised up above the rim, making them wear much quicker.

I do not want to Date Lis to pull up the year . But , below were the date should be is a Mint faint mark. What could you suggest the direction I GO. Guys used to remove that leg and try to pawn it off as a three legger,just so you know. There was also a coin that they would coat in gold to make it look like they were a gold coin that was simular. I dont remember what it was,a five cent piece that just said five but not cents,so guys would use them as five dollar gold coin pieces. That sounds correct.

    Technically the stuff used is not exactly an "acid" it is an acidic salt specifically Iron(III) chloride, which is a distinct vivid yellow. If you use Muriatic (hydrochloric) acid to de-rust steel or iron the acid bath turns that bright yellow... I have at this time accumulated several gallons of the stuff. your pipes are in little danger if you have the water running while you dump it, and leave it running for a minute or so afterwards.
