Very underrated truck. It's kinda like the old Chevrolets and GMC trucks that had the 8.1 Vortec in them. They would easily handle WAY more than the book actually said they would. You just run into problems if you're ever in an accident and they see you were pulling over your vehicles rated limit.
I hotshot with my 18 XD diesel. Gooseneck is around 7k lbs and tow total gross around 17k-20k lbs with no problem. Have airbags to help with the load. And what they don’t tell you is that it does have an exhaust brake. Look it up.
I agree. I have two f250s and a titan xd. It is every bit as capable and it’s actually my favorite tow vehicle ever. The 250s don’t even beat it payload squat nor brakes. The engine is the weak spot if there is one, but it tows heavy heavy with no problems.
I agree, I use an f350 and 550 for work but the brakes on my xd are better than My F350. When the trailer brakes on my trailer failed I was surprised how easily and drama free the titan xd stopped. By comparison towing the same weight with my f350 with trailer brake issues it took more effort and didnt stoo as smoothly. Not knocking the 350 because it's a damn good trick to tow with, but the xd is also very good for what it is intended for.
My titan squats less than the super duty I used at work. Both were loaded with 1,500lbs of salt gel, the ass end of the super duty was squatted big time, the xd only leveled out. Doesnt mean it's more heavy duty than the super duty but it was surprising, and I love the I. Cab adjustable headlights. Toyota has been offering this feature since 07, the domestics have yet to offer it.
I have a 2016 xd diesel, I pull a 29 foot 3 side fifth wheel. I have found the easiest way to line up the trailer is on the rear sliding window there is a Nissan logo. Line the Nissan logo up with the trailer pin...works every time.
I bought a 2018 Titan XD SV 5.6L gas model, 1 year old with 8K miles. I love it towing a 28' travel trailer at ~ 8K lbs. Previously had a 2006 Titan, and the towing difference is dramatic. Longer wheelbase, bigger frame, larger brakes, and much more payload capacity makes towing my setup fun, but the truck also rides great empty. If you're thinking a 5th wheel trailer, go get a 1 ton. But if you're pulling a medium to largish travel trailer and don't want to be pushed around like I see with some other 1/2 tons, and it's also your daily driver, the XD is worth considering.
The TITAN XD DIESEL is an all duty truck do you get it? It's the best all duty and it drives like an Escalade suv feels like an 3500 with out driving a freakin dump truck
@@nobleone5602 exactly why I bought my XD. Difference between towing with it and a half ton is night and day. Way more stable than a half ton without the rough ride of a 3/4 ton.
Pro-4X with airbags. That's what my dad uses to tow our fithwheel. He traded up to a 2019 Nissan Titan XD after having a 17 which had the airbags on it. The new truck towed our 31 foot fifth wheel that about 11,000 pounds wet (I believe I can't remember numbers off the top of my head) with only maybe an inch of suspension sag. Air bags fixed it on the old truck and will do the same. If I wasn't wanting to get a F350. I'd get a Titan XD. 100% I even spent time driving his 17 daily for a while due to my vehicle being broke. Loved it ever day. Nice torque band. Good power and can compete with the big boys while being in a smaller package.
It’s kind of painting things with a broad brush to say you can’t haul a fifth wheel. Fifth wheels come in a variety of sizes and weights. Some are well within its limits.
Nissan ditched the Cummins to early. They should have put it in the new Titan XD since the new Titan is taller and Nissan beefed up the frame. Thanks for sharing JB.
Huh? Nissan ditched the Cummins too early? What are you talking about? They're still being made & sold. And should have put the Cummins in the Titan XD? They DO put the Cummins in thr XD.... That's what makes the Titan, an XD. Everything you said was the exact opposite of factual. The Titan XD comes with a small Cummins Turbo Diesel
I agree 100%! I wish they would make it more fuel efficient and maybe find ways to reduce the overall weight of the Titan to help with towing. The Aisin isn’t needed in my opinion also... thanks for sharing Ric!
Hey jb I finally towed my mpg 3100bh with my nv 3500! It tows like a dream no sway control or distribution hitch. Totally impressed and our last tow vehicle was a 2018 ram dually
You can pull anything with a 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch as long as it's not too heavy for the rear axle. The rear axle is the big limiting factor but not everybody needs a truck that can haul or tow as much as a 1-ton. Most people who own 1-tons don't even need them. The real reason I'd pass on owning one though is the motor stuff. Crankshafts snapping in half at stock power levels is inexcusable. So while the truck was a cool concept with potential I am not going to suffer other people's marginal engineering and have it cost me tens of thousands.
I really had no interests in the Nissan Titan till they Announce 2020. HUGE changes . . I think it be best no one buys 2019 or older . Have a look at the 2020. Mind blowing
Great unbiased review sir. I think you hit the nail on the head here and did a great job demonstrating your point. I think Nissan got 9/10 of the way to the finish line with this truck and said "Ok that's a wrap." Not a bad truck just not a real 3/4 ton either. Question: Have you reviewed the regular Titan 5.6 for towing light loads like 7500 lbs and less? I have a 2017 Titan and it towed a 5200 lb trailer across country really well averaging about 12 mpg. Just a thought for people considering it in the 1/2 ton segment.
Titan XD is not an HD, and is no different than GM or Ford’s unicorn HD payload packages for their half tons that only exist for marketing bragging rights. Those packages just give you higher capacity springs, HD differentials, and better gearing options. At least the package on the ford beefs up the frame a little too. In this regard the Titan XD is actually way better because it’s actually available relatively freely AND addresses the upsized braking needs the domestics seem to ignore.
I just got this truck. Paid 45k for a 2019 SL midnight. I will never tow a 5th wheel. Just using it as a daily and moving heavy stuff around the homestead. Your videos are helpful. I really wanted the Ram 2500 but the $75k on sale was way to much for my needs lol.
I don’t blame you! The Nissan Titan is very capable and would out tow any 1/2 truck on the market! Sadly the 2500 diesel can’t tow a fifth wheel legally either lol!!! Thanks for sharing!
Aquatic Shadow English please. Nissans trucks are definitely Superior to RAM because RAM is fiat owned now, and yes I did own a 2006 DODGE Ram and that was a great truck but now they should be named the Fiat RAM. Ps....Nissan's do have heated and cooled seats🤣
JB thanks so much for actually going out and trying to find an XD with a higher payload, after our conversation. It speaks volumes to your character and why I love your channel. ...even if we don’t always agree! Lol! After all, you said yourself that it didn’t squat as much as the previously tested 2500s... The power felt more than adequate, as well, correct? I already know the answer! I use one daily that replaced my most recent Ram 2500. Are you aware that the brakes on the XD are the same size as the newest ‘20 Ram 3500? Or that the Aisin 6 speed is incredibly similar to the Aisin 6 speed that Ram offers in their HO Cummins 3500 trucks? All important information to why the XD ever existed in the first place. It appears though, unfortunately that the sales group you worked with didn’t set you up with a higher payload Midnight Edition. It’s all in how they are equipped. There was another comment on here where they mention having an 1800 lb payload on their diesel XD. Mine is the same, offering 1790. And that’s a Midnight CrewCab 4wd with leather, heated seats, navigation, all the bells and whistles... Regardless - I would like to copy and past a post discussion from a recent XD Forum I am a big part of. It’s my post, and it does include a link to another third party RUclips channel that I’m not affiliated with. It was simply added for support of the information on the forum, so I’ll leave it here, too. This was in no way directed at you, or this video. But it does just happen to address most of the misconceptions the XD Cummins has suffered. Oh - and by the way, all XD Cummins diesels do in fact have built in automatic exhaust brakes. When in tow mode, just tap the brake for the computer to engage the back pressure mode of the electronically controlled sequential turbo. Works great, and will maintain the speed of very heavy loads on a downhill decent, or help quickly stop lighter weight loads. - I hope you enjoy the Copied Post and wish you the very best! - :::fwd ----- Everyday somebody posts online how the XD is a 5/8 or in between truck... How it was a carved out market and Nissan just didn't build a "heavy duty enough truck". ...and I regularly defend the XD, explaining the differences between Class 2B and what marketing teams call 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton trucks. I have used the example over and over again, that an XD is NOT between a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton, but instead firmly between gas powered Class 2B trucks and larger displacement diesel powered 2B trucks (otherwise marketed as 3/4 tons for those that still don't get it). I often use factory specs from Ford's own website showing that the mighty F-250 Super Duty diesel has a similar payload to XD diesels when equipped similarly. ...and now, thanks to a largely internet based voice of whiners and crybabies, uneducated sales staff, falsely educated truck consumers (due to hyped exaggerated towing campaigns by the Big 3), and of course the ever flawless media, we find ourselves loosing the partnership between Nissan and Cummins! Now I know this isn't new news, but that's not the point of this post. Too many of you are believing this crap, that the truck was a poor design, or that it was a weird space to fill that didn't make since, or why buy it when you can just get an F250 or 2500!? This truck with a diesel is being discontinued and it could have been a real threat to the Big 3. They successfully proved that a well orchestrated smear campaign can spread like wild fire online. ...and you fell for it. So why this post? Because I keep telling you that a diesel XD is a very serious contender for a more cost effective class 2B truck. If you need 2000 lbs or more payload on a regular basis in a 4x4 diesel, you should have always been looking at class 3 trucks, instead. Or maybe a gasser class 2B, which by the way the gas version of the XD in Crew Cab form will offer closer to 2500 lbs. This doesn't make the diesel XD a poor design or an in betweener, it makes it a tool for a specific job! Just like a F-250 diesel. If you don't need 1000 lb ft of torque and you want a Cummins, but would like to save $10k, for an application that only needs 1800 lbs or less payload -- make since yet!? Before you say it, I know some of the XDs only have 1500 lb payloads, but just keep in mind there are several of us that purchased our trucks knowing exactly what options to get, or not get to achieve the payload we wanted. (Mine is a CrewCab 4wd Cummins Midnight with leather, heated seats, nav, etc and it offers 1790 for payload.... -- In conclusion: Since the XD Diesel is such a weird misfit, I think the Ford F-250 Diesels will need to be discontinued as well! Clearly everybody needs to go ahead and purchase Class 3 (1 ton) trucks now! Haha😜 ...to help support this argument I present to you a great video by a smart man describing the differences between his two Ford SuperDuty trucks. Please take a moment to pay close attention to the payload rating of his commonly equipped F250 diesel (Hint: it's the same as my XD diesel !!!) Pro tip: Remember why the XD was built to begin with, bigger brakes, heavier transmission, stronger frame, heavier axles, factory gooseneck, heavier truck curb weight for stability when towing, full-size Crew Cab with a 6’7” Bed, etc... And then tell me why Ford would convince the average consumer that a F150 1/2 ton would have a payload of 3500 lbs, and safely haul 13,000 lbs of trailer, if their own Super Duty Diesel would have half that payload!? Could it be marketing hype!? Could it be that as equipped, it would have half that, and not be safe to haul more than 9000 lbs!? --Final thoughts-- While the XD Diesels are being phased out due to poor marketing and education, it's not only Nissan's fault.... It's also a lack of honesty and extreme exaggeration on the part of the Big 3. Enjoy your trucks! ...but please take the time to purchase the correct tool for the job! ruclips.net/video/_EkPfuKzdOU/видео.html
I have no doubt in my mind this truck isn’t more capable but Nissan/Cummins didn’t necessarily build this truck to be a contender with 2500/3500 HD Trucks but rather a in between for the half ton/HD segment. If only they gave this truck a 9900# GVWR and a 5500# rear GAWR, this truck would be a true contender with the added Cummins/Aisin setup. Thanks for the info, I will be sure to read through soon!
JB, after you do read through it you'll see what I mean. To say Nissan didn't intend on it being a contender, is false. The truck came out in 2016. Go back and look at Ram 2500 torque specs for 2016. They are within 75 lb ft before ordering the HO version. Before saying that the infotainment is subpar...go set in a fully loaded $80 thousand dollar GM High Country 2500 circa 2018, even. The screens and their functionality are crazy similar! ...just because the Big 3 decided to tune their existing diesels all the way to the breaking point in the last 2 -1/2 years to claim 1000 lb ft, doesn't make it a reliable, great choice. And while we all love the option of a 12" tesla style screen in the newest Rams, it's by no means the new standard expectation! It's just ridiculous to think so... And lastly, while we can agree it's not the right truck for your fifth wheel, it is equally likely that we might agree it is the right truck for a diesel F250 shopper that would rather have a Cummins, a better warranty, and save some money!? I hope you know, I enjoy the discussion - and I'm not trying to prove you wrong. This is just a friendly chat amongst truck enthusiast. I have been a Ram guy for over 25 years, and several other GM and Ford trucks in there, too. This is actually my first Nissan - as it is likely the most American truck of the 4 at this point, ironically!
Innovative Sound I appreciate your honesty, input, and the fact that you don’t act like a kid because I give my opinion on a product. I traded in a RAM 2500 diesel because of my tow numbers and that truck felt just as capable as my 3500. I prefer to abide by the capacities on the door and not take chances with my finances should i cause an accident or get pulled over. I find this interior to be subpar even behind Chevy but I’m hoping that the 2020 Titan will fix this. It’s miles better than the Tundra and I grew up in a Toyota family! Thanks for your input as always!
I am right there with you, I do not own a Titan but I have owned a few class 2b trucks. And I have run into the same comments about how payload is exceeded, when truthfully the payload is actually not exceeded but the registration "payload sticker" is. I have proven time and time again that you can register your truck at a higher GVWR, per the weight of the truck and the RAWR and FAWR. I now currently have a 2019 Ram 2500 with air ride, I know I can tow that trailer that JB tows and happy for him that he has a 3500, so I am not knocking that. But I choose the 2500 (that I custom ordered) due to real air ride suspension. Also, just like your Titan, your RAWR is limited due to your suspension. Not really your axles, tires, rims or brakes. There is plenty of uneducated comments on this subject about increasing payload, they state you cannot. But that's simply ignoring how the truck is built, where instead they state the GVWR is how the truck is built to the pound. Which is utterly inaccurate. A simply suspension modification can increase payload based on how much capacity that modification can handle and doesn't exceed axle, tires and rims. For example: 4000 pound rated tires 10500 rated axles Based off the 3500 specs online, the RAWR is 7k, being the rims are identical on both classes. Means the rims are at the very least 7k weight rating but for safety reason, I believe it would be at least 500 pounds more than that combined (7500). I don't think Ram would put a rim to the max weight capacity on the 3500 so close to the payload (suspension) of that truck. Just for FYI, my RAWR is 6040. I plan on adding additional airbags to match around that 7k RAWR the 3500 has or higher depending on the rims. With that being stated, if you upped the suspension capability. You can match the 7500 RAWR and thus increase your payload capacity. You also can register for a higher GVWR, you will pay more but if the legal sense is the issue than simply register higher. But DOT looks for RAWR and GCWR, not payload sticker. Of course, I would say drive what you can comfortably drive.
Good post. I do however have to correct one part. Nissan titan xd Cummins turbo diesel do not have an exhaust brake. The slow down you hear and feel is done electronically with the transmission not the exhaust. You are correct it is a very nice feature. I know, I own one and pull a 8000 lb travel trailer with a 2019 xd diesel 👍
You can get a smaller 5th wheel camper that's just over 6000 pounds which would leave plenty of Room for gear and passengers and not put you over your limit. Just because it can pull a 5th wheel doesn't mean you have to go get the biggest camper you can find to show why you shouldn't do it when there are other 5th wheel options.
Well I agree but this is my fifth wheel and it’s the only one I have. Is 6000#’s dry or GVWR? 20% of that is still 1200#’s which only leaves you with 343#’s...
thankyou so much. I was loking at the nissan titan. I noticed the truck bed was way to small. mine 5th wheel camper is round 20,000 pounds . I'm now looking at the ford f350 with a double back axle. my rig is about 45 feet long. i am getting the big girl truck ford f 350. I know it around 88k I don't care safety first.
sadly they derate the xd too much. They should make it a true 3/4-1 ton truck and compete with the big boys. they don't need a dually, they just need a class competitive SRW truck
@mirlin235 The XD is not a half ton. Half tons are class 2a vehicles. The Titan XD is a class 2b. The titan actually has the specs of 3/4 tons from 2010, the issue being its 2020. It still has a higher standard payload and towing rating than half tons and still has a significantly heavier curb weight, it just is very dated spec wise. They tried advertising it as a 5/8th ton to try and make it sound interesting, but in order for that to have worked it would needed to be a class 2a with extra capability, not a class 2b with less. If Nissan ever produces a proper HD truck (with a proper 6.7 cummins) then it will really put a dent into ram
The XD was never intended to haul a trailer of that mass or was it intended to compete with 3/4 ton trucks. It’s a heavy duty 1/2 ton basically. People always want to compare it to 3/4 trucks for some reason
A.K. Vollmer I think Nissan shot themselves in the foot when they called it HD. That’s how the other manufacturers referred to their three-quarter ton and up truck. When I test drove one two years back it had a 7300 pounds curb weight. That’s three-quarter ton truck weight all day long.Maybe they should’ve just made it a package on the regular titan. Maybe like a max payload package or something.
A.K. Vollmer actually the Nissan Titan is classified as a 3/4 ton truck by it’s weight. Certain states you have to register the XD as a commercial vehicle. So yes it plays in that ball park.
People that own them and actually know what the truck is capable of compare them. People that cant stand that Nissan makes a truck that will hang with the f250 pos trucks are always the ones on here wanting to bash them. Nissan over built and underrated the Xd for whatever reason. The truck is more than capable and can hang with big three and will outlast them for sure.
One of the most educational videos I have watched on towing capacity ! Thank you! I have one and bought a RV trailer 5600 Lbs empty! I feel so much better about the weight.
Hi, thank you for showing a more cost friendly version of this truck. I like the Pro X but don't see myself taking Pike's Peak anytime soon and really need the everyday economical hauler.
Problem I have, go to camping world or other rv dealers, they'll look up your payload and deny your sale due to liability. I wanted the platinum reserve, but payload @1750 couldn't touch 5th wheels we are looking at. 2018 hd 6.6 duramax, no problems now. Lol
I know this is an old vid but I have a 2018 xd and I pull a Kaufman 2 car with it everyday. Let me tell you this thing has never let me down. My partner bought a 2019 ram 3500 at 46000 miles rod went thru block and many turbo and egr problems before that. The 6.7 Cummins is absolute junk. Do not get one.
I tow a 25ft gooseneck equipment trailer with my NON XD gas Titan. I can load a car onto it before going over weight but I quite frequently go over my max towing. The truck performs ok with the Timbren SES I installed. Being replaced with a 1 ton. I regret buying a half ton. Spend the extra money on a truck that's over kill people stop being cheap like me and thinking a half ton can get away with murder.
My 99 f250 has an official 10k rating and lower stock horsepower and torque and they was used as hotshots towing up to 32k on a regular basis. So I don’t see why it couldn’t with an additional leaf or two
Problem is it doesn’t change the sticker. I’ve heard of people getting the truck registered with a higher GVWR as long as they stay within the axle ratios.
Bradford Ramm if you were to get pulled over or get into an accident, the stickers is what can be used to create a case on whether your truck was over loaded. Point is the manufactures set the limits for the truck and the consumers are required to abide by them. A lot of people don’t follow the yellow sticker which is why I started this channel to make sure people understand the numbers because a lot of people don’t including people selling them.
I had a 2018 XD with the Cummins. Towed a bumper pull with a GCVW of 11,000 lbs. Yes plenty of engine. Not anything else. Traded for a Chevy 2500 with a gas engine because of towing numbers. Sadly I’ve seen someone towing a fifth wheel with a XD.
12600 # diesel only when properly equipped specs show ,but must count fuel passengers, driver, hitch ,anything in camper ,tools , accessories in your vehicle ,properly overloaded,,best to get a true 3/4 ton
I pull my 2013 Gateway 32 RL like nothing with my Pro 4x. The dry weight of it is 11,600. Pin weight is 2100lbs. I have my scale receipt of me my truck without the family inside is over 20600 on the road. Towed it thru the kootenays and back across the prairies. 1500kms. Have videos of it just haven't figured out how to edit them.
Rylan Hygard You are way over on the numbers for your truck. The XD has plenty of power and will move those numbers. You are asking for trouble going over the listed tow ratings for your truck.
@@darrenwarren1730 thanks for the concern but I have owned 2 3/4 tone dmaxs a lbz a lml and this truck is in there caliber. The gcvw on these XDS trucks is over 19000k on all models. So I'm only maybe 2-3k over. These trucks are the real deal and I've done a 12k tow for 7000kms from southern Alberta to Toronto. Unless you own one and know what there capable of no sense in trying to explain how over weight it is.
@@Ryles890 Its really amazing how many XD experts they have on here. I think its alot of butt hurt that Nissan makes a truck that can hang with the "big three" lol
paul that should be completely fine, just check the hitch weight and as long as you, family and trailer hitch weight don’t exceed truck payload you’re good!
JB Reviews They completely missed the market with the HD IMO. 5/8 ton that can’t even compete with 1/2 ton numbers for payload and towing. A Cummins motor that’s is almost doubled in power by the big 3 diesel offerings. Nissan uses outdated tech as well. I know because I own a Nissan SUV, well my wife just had to have it. Poor camera resolution. Navigation definitely slow. We don’t use because of several missed turns. To be fair I have not used the truck navigation. I cross shopped the Nissan HD when I was looking to buy a HD pickup. I was offered what seemed like a great deal, over $17,000 off sticker. The bottom line for me was I just didn’t feel the Nissan could fulfill my needs in a pick up truck.
@@supporterofsanity ironically all of the bigger trucks like 550 and up are derated big time over a 250/2500 and 350/2500. My 550 is derated to 350hp. Those power numbers are strictly for a numbers war, those engines would not last making that power in a f650/750 or 6500/7500 truck.
Great video as always. Could you do a 5th wheel tow on the new 2020 XD? Also, could you do an in depth review of the 2020 XD ability to tow? I like your honest videos. Keep’em coming.
Thanks! Problem is I wouldn’t recommend someone towing with this truck but if I have a chance, I will see if we can tow a TT with one! Thanks for the recommendation!
Tree in Albuquerque Better off finding a more knowledgeable reviewer if you want correct information. Telling people to watch their capacity numbers is one thing, telling them not to tow a fiver is just an uneducated quip.
joenissan You would have to find a super small light weight fifth wheel. I agree with JB on not using this truck to tow a fifth wheel. Yes the engine has plenty of power but the numbers aren’t there to tow the majority of fifth wheels.
Darren Warren ...if the advise "not to tow" is specifically pointed at fifth wheel campers with pin weights that exceed a trucks payload, then I think we can all agree with that. However, why don't we just pick on all 3/4 ton diesels then?! If you needed 2500 lbs of pin weight support you should always have been looking at Class 3 trucks (1 Tons), right!? JB is a classy guy, and he himself admits making the error, like so many truck buyer do. Fortunately there is a tool for just about every job, and Titan XDs just like other Class 2B (3/4 ton) trucks can work perfectly for many, MANY, people. Luckily there is whole world of towing needs, that has nothing to do with fifth wheel campers! Haha! XD trucks were engineered from the ground up to tow well, very well.
Hey bro I just ran across your channel and I really enjoyed the video 2 thumbs up. I have been in the market looking at newer trucks I'm in between the 2500 and 3500 spot looking to buy a fifth wheel later on and I was thinking about buying the new 2020 Chevy HD 2500 6.6 L Duramax with the 10-speed Chevy says they have have increase the towing capacity as much as 52% over the 19 model with the six-speed Duramax which is pretty incredible? The fifth wheel I'm looking at is probably going to be 13 to 15000 lb dry weight of course by time we load the kids the wife and all your camping stuff I would estimate that we're going to add three to four thousand pounds to the overall load and I know from experience it's better to have more than less especially that I plan to tow cross country at times so I guess I do have my homework cut out for me lol what's your thoughts on the new 2020 Chevy Duramax. Enjoy the video always watching
Hey man glad you liked it! I will try to do a video on my new series “weight watchers” addressing this but I strongly recommend for that trailer size a 1 ton so you have the more robust rear suspension which has overload leaf springs and ride is pretty comparable. When you’re looking into the 13k-15k you may even have to consider a dually because most SRW trucks run out of payload if you get too many options! Stay tuned and I will try to do a video soon!
how is this a real question? my 2016 Titan XD tows my 35ft 5th wheel just fine. In fact, i still have about 1,000lbs to go to max weight once hooked up. Did the 2019 models get weaker?
1,000 lbs before the GCVWR of the Titan or cargo? My 2018 XD Cummins had a GCVWR of 19,000 lbs. Per title it had a curb weight of 6,800 lbs. Cargo of 2,000 lbs per sticker. I don’t know if a 35 ft. wheel I could pull not to exceed numbers. Plenty of engine.
@@darrenwarren1730 as I'm driving down the road, all hooked up with wife and dogs in the truck, I have an extra ~1,000lbs of towing capacity buffer. That's the 5th wheel loaded down with all our shit and full tanks. Which I almost never haul with full tanks
Kyle Garrison How much does your fifth wheel weigh? Titans only have 11,000lbs towing capacity for goose neck/fifth wheels. And you normally go with 20 to 25% of the weight of fifth wheel for pin weight.
I went for the gas version because the diesel one was so sluggish. If I wanted to tow a huge fifth wheel I would have bought a heavy duty ford. I just tow boats and side by sides. I chose the Titan because I didn’t want to be like 1 out of 10 households with the same exact truck. I’m glad I didn’t get the diesel, it got discontinued because it was so buggy.. the gas one is rock solid as a truck 99% of the general public uses a truck for.
Idk what ur trucks are. But the same is with the older 2500 with diesel they only have a 2k payload some of them. Once they put pin wait in there maxed out or over. But they rate then to way more with gooseneck. All manufactures in plate there numbers. What to get two u new only u in lights tongue weight possible. I just got one of the Chevy 6.6 gas 2500 it's similar. It has 3500 lb payload. But mine is wt model with 17 in wheels so my rear tires r maxed out make my rear axle rating lighter then some. So in reality I think I can only put 2500 in the bed before it's maxed. So if I go goose in the future I'll have to watch my tongue weight since I have tool box in the bed too full of stuff. And I'll loose 150 lbs or so for putting the hitch in. Do u know what front to rear weight ratio is on these trucks? 60-40 ?
I did a follow up on it with a smaller fifth wheel: Was I Wrong To Say Not To Tow A FifthWheel With A Nissan Titan XD Diesel? Facts Inside! ruclips.net/video/GrBxh5KA-W4/видео.html
Probably not, when they first came out I seen one layed out all over the road trying to pull a camper, definitely not a one ton truck, isn't nissan in bad financual situation right now, heard something in the news insertion about their future
It all depends on how heavy the horses, trailer, and tractor is. In some cases this truck will do the job but any weight you add on the hitch and inside the cab of the truck is gonna be the deciding factor for your question. Be sure to understand cargo carrying capacity (payload) first because this is the most abused capacity. Tongue weight usually falls between 10-15% of trailer weight (GVWR) and fifth wheel pin weight is usually 20-25% of trailer GVWR. I apologize if it’s confusing but I’m planning to start a series that will tackle this better for you!
So Nissan didn't make the XD to tow trailers LMAO. It has the same Aisan transmission and axles as a Dodge 2500 not to mention it weighs as much 3/4 how is it not made to tow. I think Nissan is just to conservative with it's towing numbers to be safe unlike every other manufacturer who throws out unsafe towing numbers just to sell trucks to ppl who shouldn't be towing.
Scott W. I owned a 2018 Titian XD for almost 18 months. The the weight rating for the axels are 4,900 lbs on the Titan XD. The weight rating on 3/4 tons is 5,900 lbs. See www.caranddriver.com/nissan/titan-xd/specs/2019/nissan_titan-xd_nissan-titan-xd_2019#specifications
Darren Warren still, the Titan XD is comparable to an older diesel. I went from a 2003 ram 2500 with a 5.9 Cummins and 4x4 to a Titan XD with the 5.0 Cummins, and I feel like the Titan XD pulls the same if not slightly better. So for people upgrading from an older diesel and just want a newer diesel but doesn’t wanna pay an arm and leg, the Titan XD would’ve been the way to go. Plus don’t try aguing saying it was over priced, because you could’ve bought a platinum reserve for 45k when they had their special deals up. People who paid 65k for them just wasn’t very bright.
Oinchadoom Performance Yes comparable to older trucks that don’t tow as much. I just want people to be safe. People who think this truck is comparable to all the trucks listed in the 2B DOT category are being mislead. The numbers are not the same between a 2500 Ram and a Titan XD. General regs listed by DOT are not the same as specific numbers listed by the manufacturer.
@@JB_WhoWork lol I just bought one and we have an mpg 3100bh but our trailer is stored up north and our first trip isn't til July. We had a ram dually 2018 but then had our 5th baby so we were short a seat. I hoping it works out ok. You do great videos by the way. You always get all the info people need out there. Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks for the informative video. Always wished that Nissan or Toyota would make a diesel pickup. Then they did, but they screwed it up. Let's say Nissan builds the truck to get the higher payload (better axles, stiffer springs etc.) - maybe a target payload of 3000-3500 lbs. Competing trucks with that payload rating tow a lot more than the 12,000 lbs. or so that this was rated for. So now Nissan has to bump up the towing capacity to, say, maybe 15,000. At that point the XD diesel would be a 250 / 2500 / 3/4 ton truck - which is what it needed to be. Forget this "5/8ths ton" bs.
Sadly some of the 3/4 tons have lower payloads than this Nissan Titan... they need to allow trucks to be rated at the customer level as long as they can stay within the axle ratio/tire capacity which is the most important thing at the end of the day. A truck can have a 30000# tow capacity but if the payload is only 3000#’s that realistically means you have to stay within 11000-13000#’s of trailer (depending how you load the trailer)...
I have a 18 titan xd crew cab 4wd gas pro4x. my payload is 2080 pounds and 12,000 towing capacity. My truck would pull that just fine. Not sure why the diesel version is much less on that truck you have there.
Whats the purpose of hooking up a fifth wheel that u can't pull, notice he didn't show the weight of the manufacturer tags of the truck and the trailer ? Ford 150 with 3.0 power stroke diesel max tow and payload package is a capable truck! class dismissed !!
This review is silly. Not all fifth wheels are created equal. The only thing that matters (with ANY) truck/trailer combo, is what the truck is rated to tow and what the trailer weighs. Doesn't matter if it's a fifth wheel, travel trailer, flatbed or cargo trailer. There are plenty of fifth wheel trailers that are light enough for this truck to tow safely.
@@sbfhawk4343 My Ecodiesel is rated at 420 ft/lbs torque with only 3.0L. My wife's 2018 Ram 2500 with the 6.7L Cummins is rated at 800 ft/lbs of torque and 22 mpg at 70mph. A co-worker has a 2017 Titan with the 5.0, and just loves it. He only upgraded the fuel tank to 50gals. Last year he went to Tahoe in the snow. And swears the Titan was the best 4x4 he has ever owned. And the best diesel too! The truck looks like a 2500/3500. And if Nissan had built it that way. The Titan could be a real contender.
They no longer make a Diesel Titan unless it’s a leftover but that’s a apples and oranges comparison. It really depends on what you’re using it for, so if you plan on towing 12000-15000#’s conventional, a RAM is better but if you plan to just use is for pleasure with light towing (10k or less) Titan is more than capable. I would choose RAM just because of serviceability and the amount of trucks they sell.
I've been thinking about buying a 5th wheel but I currently have a 2019 Pro4x. So now im doing my research to see what truck would be best. What do you suggest? Great videos by the way and thank you for your insights.
If it were me I would look at gas 3/4 tons or 1 ton diesels. Payload plays a big factor with fifth wheels so make sure you weigh your family, and figure about 250#’s for a hitch, and multiply 21% of the GVWR for the trailer to get pin weight 👍🏾
@@taylorma69 this guys making it seem like you can’t. I’ve seen many 1/2 tons towing a 5th wheel. Smaller RVs of course but still. I hate hitch RVs. I like my bedroom above the rest.
Could have noted how long your trailer is and the dry weight. A little generic on the details of what you're hooking up to it considering your title and you went over the interior of the truck for 5 minutes. You also got took of you bought the midnight edition with clothe seats. Mine is the same year/model and I have leather throughout, seats dash, doors. I'm going to keep searching for a better video that isn't look at me hook this enormous trailer up to a 3/4 ton. Be realistic there are all sizes of 5th wheel trailers
Get rid of that goose neck and get the Reese revolution and turn 360 on a dime. Manufacture build trucks with rake to compensate for squatting and this truck can’t handle that trailer easily.... never tow a fifth wheel with this truck, finical issue means stay home because your truck broke making payments. Glad no one is paying you for this or hopefully no one is..
@@JB_WhoWork I think you got the wrong impression from my reply, If you are going to tow a 5th wheel with any truck you need to make sure the trailer GROSS GVWR weight and that is the trailer FULLY loaded as in all the tanks are full. Gray tanks, fresh water tanks, every cabinet and storage full stacked full, this weight is from the manufacture. A real experienced person who knows how to tow trailers knows this... Never trust a sales person who tells you to go off the empty weight saying your truck can do it! If you stay in these limits you and your family will be traveling safe and there is no need to worry about pin weight because you will be well with in your limits. Example Truck gross say's 12,000lb you should be looking at trailers with a GROSS GVW at 11,000lb or less because the empty weight is most likely between 7,500 to 9,500 and you have room for gear and goodies.. just BALLS up and tell your significant other no at the RV lot. Any truck is capable of towing a fifth wheel as long as you stay in it's limits and use a proper hitch and if goose necks are supposedly the best then every Semi truck would be using them so use a real 5th wheel hitch that is why the make these trailers with King-pins.... I owne one of these truck and its a 2016 and i love it, one other thing I owned a 1999 Chevy 2500 and this Nissan XD truck has higher towing ratings than my 25000 did from 1999.
Mike 2500 so you’re basically saying to stay within your trailer GVWR But not the truck? I disagree. If you’re gonna tow a trailer, do it with the correct truck. I’m not ready to buy a dually but if I upgrade my trailer and exceed my limits with my 3500 SRW, best believe I’m trading it in for a dually. I have nothing but respect for the Titan but I think towing a fifth wheel with this truck and staying within the limits will be tough unless your buying a stripped down 4x2 gas. I chose to use the gooseneck because of convenience and it doesn’t void the factory warranty. I never stated it was better... thanks for sharing!
I’ve been towing a 5th wheel for a while with my 16 diesel Titan XD. It loves to pull. But you’re saying not to tow a 5th wheel.....you sir are wrong. What you don’t tow is a 5th wheel as big as that one. Fivers come in many sizes. Be more realistic and maybe you’ll be taken a bit more serious. Ridiculous video.
@@JB_WhoWork How about doing that! How about towing a fifth wheel matched to the XD rather than making blanket statements. I’ve been towing a 30’ jayco eagle HT for 4 years now with a diesel Titan XD PR. Perfectly matched.
Look it up.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. Love Titan XD
Wow that’s truly impressive
Titan cummins is undoubtedly the best light duty truck
It does not have exhaust brake, it uses transmission
@Brandon Leech exactly
@Brandon Leech I'd say swap the rear axle and front suspension from an NV3500, but I'm not sure how different the front suspension may be.
rochab77 the front suspension is literally identical. The rear is slightly different.
I have a 2016 xd diesel, I pull a 29 foot 3 side fifth wheel.
I have found the easiest way to line up the trailer is on the rear sliding window there is a Nissan logo.
Line the Nissan logo up with the trailer pin...works every time.
How much does the rig weigh?
Thanks for sharing!
Ugly as sin though!
Did you upgrade to a class V hitch?
Very well said …. Being over weight or over capacity opens you up to a huge mess of problems and it’s not worth it.
That truck looks sick with the midnight package. Nice video.
Thanks!
It can handle it. It’s underrated! That’s just as capable as a f250 6.2 gas fx4
It’s kind of painting things with a broad brush to say you can’t haul a fifth wheel. Fifth wheels come in a variety of sizes and weights. Some are well within its limits.
Well the trailer would have to have a loaded hitch weight of 1000#’s and even then once you add a 250# hitch and passengers, you will likely exceed
2019 is the last year for the cummins
@@Right-Handed_Neutrino 2019 is the last year for the Cummins, Nissan marriage.
I agree 100%! I wish they would make it more fuel efficient and maybe find ways to reduce the overall weight of the Titan to help with towing. The Aisin isn’t needed in my opinion also... thanks for sharing Ric!
Nissan didn’t ditch the Cummins. Cummins Ditch Nissan because of the low sales.
Hey jb I finally towed my mpg 3100bh with my nv 3500! It tows like a dream no sway control or distribution hitch. Totally impressed and our last tow vehicle was a 2018 ram dually
That’s awesome! You have to post something on the tube so I can see the setup! Thanks for sharing!
@@JB_WhoWork okay. As soon as I can get a day off 😂
The XD DIESELS are equipped with a trans brake similar to the exhaust brake.
They refreshed the interior for the 2020 Titan with a higher res 9 inch screen. But it's all moot now that they dropped the Cummins as an option lol
Cummins dropped them as a client since it didnt sell enough
James Mastroianni , Nissan dropped Cummins because of all the issues that motor was having, it’s well documented on the forums and Titan groups also
James Mastroianni Nissan dropped Cummins because of the problems with the motor.
Daniel Garcia No Cummins in the 2020 model.
Same truck pretty much
No Cummings in 2020 and gotta run premium gas to get the best mpg out of the same 5.6
Great unbiased review sir.
The xd does have a beefed up frame so I’m not sure where your getting the info?
They can still pull fairly large trailer but it would need to be a bumper pull to get some of that payload back.
Jesus 75k on sale...mustve been looking at a limited
And now these trucks a steal with some heavy duty trucks Ram etc selling for 90k used smh
I had that same exact truck and I traded up to a 2019 3500 Ram. Problem solved.
😂😂😂
Jim Vogt was that you in your 2019 3500 ram in the shoulder of the highway broken down?
Jim Vogt yes like Nissan piece of shits are better cheap gloss black around the touch screen no heated/cold seats cheaply build how is ram bad

Everyday somebody posts online how the XD is a 5/8 or in between truck...
Haha😜
...to help support this argument I present to you a great video by a smart man describing the differences between his two Ford SuperDuty trucks. Please take a moment to pay close attention to the payload rating of his commonly equipped F250 diesel (Hint: it's the same as my XD diesel !!!)
Pro tip: Remember why the XD was built to begin with, bigger brakes, heavier transmission, stronger frame, heavier axles, factory gooseneck, heavier truck curb weight for stability when towing, full-size Crew Cab with a 6’7” Bed, etc...

For example:
4000 pound rated tires
10500 rated axles
Based off the 3500 specs online, the RAWR is 7k, being the rims are identical on both classes.
Good job! You won’t be disappointed and that powerstroke will pull that trailer with ease 👍🏾
Good video bro. I was on the fence with this truck. Thanks for getting it cleared up
This was the video I needed to see. Thanks!
sadly they derate the xd too much. They should make it a true 3/4-1 ton truck and compete with the big boys. they don't need a dually, they just need a class competitive SRW truck
Yep!
Lmao a Nissan will never compete with an f250 or f350 or the 2500 and 3500 from Chevy or Ram
@@armandogonzalez6822 nissan could easily if they wanted to. The titan xd is a failed marketing experiment but the normal titan is class competitive
My 2019 Cummins XD, with a 6" lift and air bags tows my Cougar 5th wheel with elan. Be safe.
2019 Nissan Titan XD Diesel is discontinued, replacement will be the new 2020 Tiatna coming soon.
Thanks for sharing Phil 🙏🏽
Hi, thank you for showing a more cost friendly version of this truck. I like the Pro X but don't see myself taking Pike's Peak anytime soon and really need the everyday economical hauler.
Just an FYI, the SV is NOT Base level
JB Reviews wtff does a stickler have to do with it?
Bradford Ramm if you were to get pulled over or get into an accident, the stickers is what can be used to create a case on whether your truck was over loaded.
Point is the manufactures set the limits for the truck and the consumers are required to abide by them. A lot of people don’t follow the yellow sticker which is why I started this channel to make sure people understand the numbers because a lot of people don’t including people selling them.
That’s what a slider is for genius
If you wanna tow u get a base 3/4 or 1 ton pickup simple as that
Very good video! Subscribed
Great video and edits.
Darren Warren I have a 30 foot super lite 5th wheel that pairs perfectly. Depends on size and pin weight. It’s totally safe and doable.
Thank you, very informative. May have saved me a bunch of money and problems.

Like to have seen it make a short 10 mile loop just to see how it handled.
I did but for some reason the video quality was terrible. I did a drive with a pro4-X which I drove more, check it out!

Me too! It really is a great truck and can’t wait to review the 2020’s!
I know that 4dr shrt bed can tow a scamp 19foot fifth wheel bc the actuall scamp fifthwheel isn't any more than 4thousand
Meaning it wont push your weight over your GVRW specs of that truck if its 8K in weight
If u scaled out at the cat scale.. shouldn't be over 12thousand combined
paul that should be completely fine, just check the hitch weight and as long as you, family and trailer hitch weight don’t exceed truck payload you’re good!
Payload cap and towing cap are 2 different things. That can tow just under 12000 lbs
12.5k
Nice review man! I see why Nissan doesn’t sell many pickups though.
Thanks! Why do you say that?
Thanks for the great information
Great video as always. Could you do a 5th wheel tow on the new 2020 XD? Also, could you do an in depth review of the 2020 XD ability to tow? I like your honest videos. Keep’em coming.
Thanks! Problem is I wouldn’t recommend someone towing with this truck but if I have a chance, I will see if we can tow a TT with one! Thanks for the recommendation!
JB you should! All the gasser XDs carry much higher payload due to the lesser weight of the engine. Most are between 2500 lbs and 2900 lbs.
My wife 2011 equinox has a total payload capacity of 1,285 pounds I find that hilarious.
Next time give a video on how the truck pulls that big 5th wheel
GREAT JOB!!!!
1500# payload is mind blowing low. My 14’ Ram 1500 has a payload like that.
But will it go 350k miles?
My 18 gas has about 600 lbs more payload. I tow a 10K gooseneck trailer.
Gas?
@@JB_WhoWork yep. 2450lbs
Wish theu gave this truck the same payload capacity as the NV3500
How about brake sizes🤔🤔🤔🤣😂, why does the XD have bigger brakes then the big 3🤔😆😏
That’s where it counts. It’s not about if it can pull it. Anything can pull it but can it stop it.
It doesn't have a engine break on it
It can come, from the factory with a fith wheel hook so yes
Nice review thanks
Cool I didn’t know I could tow my 5th wheel with my Nissan Xd
By specs you cant, the lightest 5th wheel has too much weight in the bed. Payload specs wont allow it although it has the power to easily do it.
Great review
Thanks!
What is the weight of the trailer in this video? I’m looking at towing a 8000lb 5th wheel RV with my Titan XD .
This one is about 12500#’s
What trailer?
exactly, i tow my 35ft Jayco Eagle with my 2016 XD all the time. have literally towed it coast to coast with no issues
but its really a nice setup i love it
Hey bro I just ran across your channel and I really enjoyed the video 2 thumbs up.
What model Titan and fiver do you have?

LOL because it’s a 1/2 ton truck with Beefy Frame it’s between 1/2 & 3/4 ton it’s 5/8 Ton truck and IN 2020 2,800 LB

😅😅😅
I don’t know but if you take it and get it weighed, you can help out the channel 😀!

Lighter 5th wheel camper with a sliding hitch would work fine though right?

Does it have an easy down tailgate?
Yes
Thats why i got a gas XD. I have 2k payload.
Could you tell me if the ride is more like a 1/2 ton or is it stiffer like a 3/4 ton?
It’s a little stiffer but it wouldn’t be a deal breaker for most 👍🏾
It rides way better than the '17 F-150 I traded in for it. Of course my F-150 had Bilstein 5100's on it so it was pretty stiff.
Probably not, when they first came out I seen one layed out all over the road trying to pull a camper, definitely not a one ton truck, isn't nissan in bad financual situation right now, heard something in the news insertion about their future
so if i tow horses (my parents ride)or a tractor would it be better to go with this truck vs say a silverado or ram 2500?
It all depends on how heavy the horses, trailer, and tractor is. In some cases this truck will do the job but any weight you add on the hitch and inside the cab of the truck is gonna be the deciding factor for your question. Be sure to understand cargo carrying capacity (payload) first because this is the most abused capacity. Tongue weight usually falls between 10-15% of trailer weight (GVWR) and fifth wheel pin weight is usually 20-25% of trailer GVWR.
I apologize if it’s confusing but I’m planning to start a series that will tackle this better for you!
@@JB_WhoWork I appreciate it makes more sense than what I was reading on the internet
Scott W. No the axles are only rated for 4,900 lbs. 3/4 tons are 5,900 lbs.
@@darrenwarren1730 No they use a 9.84 in. AAM same axles used in dodge 3/4 look it up

Wow congrats on the baby! I saw a really nice nav3500 lifted with bigger tires and it looked awesome! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
That is not a fifth wheel, it’s a gooseneck.
I have a 18 titan xd crew cab 4wd gas pro4x. my payload is 2080 pounds and 12,000 towing capacity. My truck would pull that just fine. Not sure why the diesel version is much less on that truck you have there.
Diesel weighs more than the gas
True, but defeats the purpose of choosing a diesel if the payload is 30% less and same towing capacity imo. Good video though.
CK Ck Regulations put silly restrictions on trucks which is very irritating, thanks!
What is the weight of the trailer?
At the time 12300#’s
Whats the purpose of hooking up a fifth wheel that u can't pull, notice he didn't show the weight of the manufacturer tags of the truck and the trailer ? Ford 150 with 3.0 power stroke diesel max tow and payload package is a capable truck! class dismissed !!
Mr. Ram that came over from FCA should have done more for the Titan Truck lineup.
What is your trailer gvwr?
It is 13980#’s
This review is silly. Not all fifth wheels are created equal. The only thing that matters (with ANY) truck/trailer combo, is what the truck is rated to tow and what the trailer weighs. Doesn't matter if it's a fifth wheel, travel trailer, flatbed or cargo trailer.
There are plenty of fifth wheel trailers that are light enough for this truck to tow safely.

@@JB_WhoWorkI am in the market to buy a new truck. Which would you recommend. RAM 250O diesel or NISSAN TITAN XD. I will barely use for haevy loads?
@@JB_WhoWork Sounds good! Thanks for the response and help.
So can you do things to make it safe and legal to pull that 5th wheel? Like an axle swap or bag suspension?
You cannot. The only way is having the manufacture increase the GVWR to give you more payload capacity
Yes...purchase a half ton type 5th wheel that is within the spec of the trucks abilities.
@@taylorma69 this guys making it seem like you can’t. I’ve seen many 1/2 tons towing a 5th wheel. Smaller RVs of course but still. I hate hitch RVs. I like my bedroom above the rest.

I wish they would adopt the mechanicals from that pin box and put it on the Reese Goosebox and then I would have everything I would ever need!
Lol!!!
Agreed. Another clueless youtuber. The Xd is a beast for towing 80% of the fifth wheels out there.
As you can see by his reply, he’s not to be taken seriously. That’s fine. Good to know ahead of time I guess.
joenissan how about this, I will do a video to show you facts and that way we will be on the same page 👍🏾
@@JB_WhoWork How about doing that! How about towing a fifth wheel matched to the XD rather than making blanket statements. I’ve been towing a 30’ jayco eagle HT for 4 years now with a diesel Titan XD PR. Perfectly matched.
Looks kinda like my RAM 🤷🏾♂️
Ram 2500 Megacab Cummins Yeah the one in the profile picture and this are both white. Looks like a ram.
