  • The Dancer, in 1964, became the first Canadian-bred horse to win the Kentucky Derby. He then became one of the most successful sires of the 20th century.

I caught my schoolbus, at the SE corner of Windfield Farms in Oshawa. The horses were always there in the morning, I thought nothing of it, it was just a normal day to me.
But sad now to see Windfield Farms gone, but I'm proud that the gravesite of Northern Dancer has been maintained and it can be visited at any time.
Northern Dancer made Canada proud, he was the first Canadian horse to win the Kentucky Derby. He was the greatest stud horse in history, earning over $40 million by 1981!

Northern Dancer was the greatest, because he changed the course of the thoroughbreds. His bloodlines are everywhere, now it is hard to find a great racehorse who hasn't Northern Dancer in their pedigree. He was 14.2 hands, the size of a riding pony. He had to have a pit dug in the mounting shed because he was so small and the mares were a lot taller than him. So the mares were stood at a lower level than he was for the safely of both animals. He had a huge character, a bit aggressive and unpredictable. No horse has done more to advance the Breed in the 20th / 21st century than Northern Dancer.

My father raced horses and had several grandsons of northern dancer. We live in maryland where northern dancer retired and studded…..I just laid to rest our last thoroughbred who was a great grandson of northern dancer….he was spicy just like his great grandfather…it ripped my heart out even though he was 29 years old…. My dad bought him when I was 17…. I met northern dancer when I was 11…he was acting up and I remembered putting my hand gently on him and he calmed….letting a little girl love on him for a few minutes…. I love you my Class Performer always

Respect to Winfield Farms. Sold the land but ensured that some of the land, a few buildings and the graves of the horses that made the and Canadian thoroughbred racing remained honored.

Interesting to see someone get in there. They used to staff it with security when I tried. Maybe I have to try a different date?

Vice Regent, a son of Northern Dancer. His race career was shortened by an injury unfortunately.

Winfield farms is/was local to me. A shame to see it so barren and empty. We used to drive past a couple days a week and now its overpriced slap together junk. You would think out of respect for the horses and EP, people could at least close the gate where the horses are at rest...

I vote for Secretariat. He ran the triple crown, breaking track record in each. 50 years later, no horse has bested Secretariat's records. In the Belmont he showed the world what he could do---beating four other horses by 31 lengths. No other horse has even come close to his Belmont record. On the day of the 1973 Belmont, God whispered to Secretariat "this is your time. Show 'em what you can do." And Secretariat did. He flew on the racetrack. Had Turcott not changed his position while on Secretariat's back, Secretariat would have continued running until his heart burst, and dying while he did what he loved best.

I acknowledge that Secretariat was indeed a great horse. But Northern Dancer is from my home town, and so I must defer to him. I visit his gravesite every now and then, and I marvel at his heritage and what he accomplished.
