Wonderful stuff. In fact, the piano concertos of Paderewski and Mozskowski were the first piano concertos I ever bought outside of the standard repertoire concertos (about 30 years ago), so it always has a special place in my heart.
Paderewski's Polish Fantasy, Opus 19 is a wonderful piece of music. Had Earl Wild with Arthur Fiedler and The "LONDON" Symphony Orchestra on RCA back in my youth. You can find it here on RUclips in its cd release. Have never heard this OVERTURE so I will check it out. THANKS DAVE !!!
Oh yes, a really great disc! The Paderewski Piano Concerto has done quite well on recordings, but is almost never performed in concert, sadly. The slow movement is really quite touching and it’s a wonderful piece overall, as is the Polish Fantasy. Another late-romantic Polish concerto I have a huge soft spot for is the beautifully lyrical and memorable Violin Concerto of Mieczyslaw Karlowicz. I’m not too fond of this composer’s sometimes gloomy and derivative tone poems, but his Violin Concerto is a real gem, right up there with some of the “established” masterworks of the genre IMO.
Hi Dave (again), my comment disappeared... weird. Just to say THANKS for another "new" composer to add, and my first namesake too. Enjoying his Symphony rite now, after reading your review, the Maksymiuk & BBC Scottish SO recording. Interesting to know that he was sort of a pop star at the Carnegie Hall when he first appeared in the early 1890s. After this big late romantic symphony I'll run to my friend's house. He for sure has this CD.
Speaking with my wife about Hamelin and his ability to play the most difficult piano compositions so faultlessly- not attempted by most pianist. I think it would be instructive for someone like you with a wealth of expertise to explain why he is not considered one of the greatest of pianist. Aesthetically speaking, I think he is generally not considered among the highest, or am I full of beans? I think there is an elusive, quality of artistry that I am missing-as a nonmusician
Dave, thanks -- a new composer and a new opera! Found excerpts of the opera MANRU on youtube. There is a full version on youtube, too, but no sub-titles. A story of ill-fated love Manru is a person torn between being a gypsy and his love for a non-gypsy woman. There are two current DVDs of it. The music is lush. Going to have to order it. Dave, you mentioned his complete orchestral works fit on a couple discs. Any recordings of them you could point us to?
@@DavesClassicalGuide My question was muddy, I should have asked if there was a Paderewski orchestral cycle set or complete works box set. I gather from your reply there is not.
@@classicalmusiclists There's one with Roland Bader & Cracow SPO with 3 fragments of Manru, a Fantasy based on the opera, and bits of piano suites that were arranged for orchestra. Hope that helps.

@@Ignatius91 Thank you so much!
I have listened to 'Manru' and was surprised at how good an opera it is! The aria Polish tenors sing from it is its least successful portion.
