Carbon monoxide rebreathers are a tough call. In some ways it's just an improvement on high altitude chambers, in others it's similar to training at altitude and drawing blood for a self-transfusion at race time (definitely not legal). "Hypoxia training" is all the rage, though, even for weekend warriors. That's basically what a co2 rebreather does. Induce hypoxia to simulate altitude. Anyway, I would guess at least 90% of the racers do the same. Doping? I'll allow it.
@@andrewphilips2457 Hypoxic Response: Inhaling small, controlled amounts of CO can mimic the effects of hypoxia (low oxygen levels) experienced at high altitudes. CO binds to hemoglobin more readily than oxygen, reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. This can stimulate the body to produce more red blood cells and hemoglobin, similar to the body's response to high altitude. Erythropoiesis Stimulation: The reduction in oxygen-carrying capacity due to CO exposure can trigger erythropoiesis, the process of producing new red blood cells. This can potentially improve oxygen delivery to muscles during physical exertion, enhancing endurance and performance.

Of course, CO is a compound that is not on the banned list, at least for the time being, however, "doping" in the context of professional sports, is categorised & in the case of CO, it would surely fall into the "blood booster" classification. CO has a greater affinity with haemoglobin, than O2, therefore, in the presence of both O2 & CO, haemoglobin will bind with CO more readily than O2. At altitude, the percentage of O2 in the air, is considerably lower than it is at sea level......human physiology adapts to the consequent hypoxia by increasing production of red blood cells which facilitates an increased delivery of O2 to the cells of organs & other tissues.....as the body acclimatises to the altitude, hypoxia dissipates & with it, the mechanisms of the physiology for increased erythrocyte production. The CO is delivered to the athlete to force further hypoxia & again, prompts the physiology to react by further production of of red blood cells. CO administration & use is irrefutably a PED & just because it is not classified as a banned substance yet, it does not change the fact that it is "doping". I have no doubt that it will be illegal & appear on the banned substance list, in the very near future.
