I was there also and it was the most moving performance of any opera I've seen in 40 years going to the Met--I was completely verklemmt! Entire cast was fabulous but Asmik was like a visitor from another opera planet altogether. Truly astonishing. The HD on 5/11 was fantastic also
I listened to this performance streaming. It has been years since I have heard such an intrinsically beautiful voice. The second act, especially, was an absolute jaw-dropper. Solid core, even production from glorious top to well-founded lower register. Brava Asmik Gergorian! Unlike other posters, I thought the staging worked very well. I anticipated disliking the puppet, but it was very well handled and even emotionally expressive. It probably helps that I LOVE Japanese theatre: Nō, Kabuki, and Bunraku, so those elements did not upset or distract me.
C’etait hier soir àTOuLON ,une mer veiveille voix. Interprétation!!! Sublime!!!LA. bEAUTÉ de ma chère. ASMIK. Je lui souhaite UN BON. ANNIVErSAIRE!!!! Je. L’aime et je. L’admire!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Asmik was enchantment - she had me enthralled from the moment she appeared. A beautiful perfomance indeed. I liked the puppet child and the use of the masked blackout dancers during the performance moving the props etc. I found the puppet child quite moving actually; the puppeters are a skilled bunch. This production was developed and directed by the late Anthony Minghella, an unusually talented director, Oscar winner and novelist (The English Patient & The Talented Mr. Ripley). This was his vision so I understood where it came from and went with it due to my respect of his greatness; he was one of a kind - I could not 2nd guess him.
Grigorian's voice is absolutely huge and has enormous stamina. The child puppet was a real shock. Maybe a the soprano is too loud for a real little boy to be next to!!
Really wonderful performance by Gregorian. Why are the puppeteer’s upstaging the scene and what is the purpose of it since a real human boy would have been so much more emotional instead of these 3, 2 puppeteer‘s, and the puppet and the great effect of the rolling of the red scarf, requiring two more stage people on hand to do the rolling. I guess simple, allowing the music to hold the drama, is just not enough for modern day stage directors ?
The puppet is a major miscalculation. It ruins the intimacy of the final scene: this is a child who will never see his mother again, not an inanimate theatrical prop.
I am a great fan of puppetry but the introduction in this scene is completely distracting and makes the scene technical rather than emotional. Gregorian is a marvel. But she should have refused this divide that robs her of er final scene.
Thank you so much for making this divine performance by Asmik Grigorian available!
Marvelous performance of Asmik Grigorian of this final dramatic scene of Madama Butterfly. ❤❤❤
Absolutely beautiful 👏👏
Amazing performance, I was there!!!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Me, too! Amazing!

Asmik is a high level soprano❤❤❤❤❤
good , very good , Indien.

J'aime cet opéra, mais ça me bouscule
Indeed
~ERGREIFEND!!!

Why a puppet instead of a real human being?????
I have seen this opera multiple times, but never seen such a stupid ending.
This production is almost 20 years old, so the puppet shouldn’t be a surprise. To my understanding, it is taken from the kabuki theater tradition.
Tenor very good. Soprano good but sometimes out of the singing line.
By far the worst ending of this wonderful Opera.
Looks like a bad puppet show 🤮🤮🤮🤮
