"By the 80's the dictatorship had loosened, and by loosened I mean the dictator was assassinated"...💀. Gold.
He forgot to mention that ...was assassinated...then Country was taken over by another military dictator until late 80's
I've one similar already by a colubian youtuber called alvinsch who said something in the lines of : Park Chung-hee was forced step down..........Because he got assasinated.
That was at the moment completely unexpected :D
Ronny is so cool nd fun 😂
Imagine if we can “loosen” the nowadays dictators the same way S.Korean loosened theirs, it’d be very peaceful 😌😁v
@@margarethany lol we do, we do still so that
Fun fact: The song "Gangnam Style" is actually about deepening and widening income and wealth inequality in and around the Gangnam district of South Korea. The general poise Psy has in the song (especially curling the upper lip and engaging in 'neck stretching') are a hyperbolic parody of wealthy subcultures in Gangnam, while the lyrics suggest a satire of extreme privilege while everyone else is ignored and implied to be left behind economically.
Psy himself was born rich and privileged. He was raised in Gangnam if I'm not wrong. He attended university in the US which is why he is fluent in English
@@icephoenix1932 and?
@@cancerino666 And nothing? He's singing from personal experience?
@@icephoenix1932 and the Buddha was born a prince and Teddy Roosevelt in a rich family, yet both went on to help the Common Person.
So it was basically Parasite but in a catchy musical format
Came here for a laugh, because Ronny Chieng is always funny. But this was something fresh, informative, and still presented with his humorous style. Thank you Ronny.
P.S. Trevor, give Ronny a raise.
Same here ! But I think Ronnie should get a raise everytime he does a solo video, he's amazing !
@@voidvoidvoid7274 he's just an amazing comedian in general, definitely my favorite part of the daily show.
I totally agree! Informative and funny, Ronny is absolutely killing it right now.
@@voidvoidvoid7274 I love his Prove Me Wrong segments. At first I thought he was just a sidekick on the Daily Show, but come to find out, he wrote and acted in his own sitcom series in Austrailia, he's got quite the career on his own.
Correct! Trevor, give Ronny a raise.
As a Korean Kpop geek this is one of the most accurate summary of Kpop history. 👍👍🙏 Yes Kpop was used when young Koreans fought against establishments and older generations
Yeah thogh i am an ARMY and Blink, I don’t like the fact that western media only talks about BTS and Blackpink. This video was very informative and fun
Thank you for talking about The Kim Sisters! I don't see them mentioned much but their Ed Sullivan performances were so cute and they were the first Korean artist to ever chart on Billboard
True!!!
First time watching Ronny without saying his signature "Stoopid". Kpop really changes things.
😂
I know, I missed it 😆
happy CL got a shout out
"And by 'loosened,' I mean the dictator was assassinated." Great euphemism! 🤣 Also appreciate how deep he went into the history in mere 5 minutes. Love Ronny!
"And they've droned zero weddings." Thanks, now I'm laughing out loud in the bathroom. 😄
I was listening without watching, rewound to make sure I heard what I thought I heard, saw his cocked "yeah I just said that head, and burst out laughing too!
Thanks Ronny! Stray Kids Stay here. This was a fun quick dive in K-Pop. I almost died laughing at "why your cousin suddenly speaks Korean more fluently than English." I have some students who embody this.
I have a daughter that embodies this.
I wrote the same first sentence then saw yours. Daughter intruded me to kpop, first EXO, then Blackpink, then redvelvet (one member was in choir with my son in school). Now I’m a total Stay. Saw them in New Jersey. Best concert I’ve ever been to. Amazing voices live, so much energy.
@@vikkium672 My daughter was on a plane with Stray Kids recently, on her way back to Seoul (she's in school there). It was quite a story.
I don't share her enthusiasm for kpop, but she did introduce me to kdrama and Korean barbecue. 🙂
Reading every comments looking for a fella Stay!
@@vikkium672 I had no idea about KPop other than 'BTS is a group, right?' Then I got introduced to Stray Kids, and I quickly fell in love with their music. I'm flying down to the lower 48 in March so I can go to their Atlanta concert. It's a month's pay just to get off my island, but I think the experience will be well worth it.
The biggest surprise was how educational this turned out to be XD
This is surprisingly accurate. I didn't expect the Kim Sisters, but thanks Daily Show for doing your homework!! 👍👍
It's wild how much gospel they did.
I'm Korean and have been a KPop fan since Seo Tae Ji. There are things I never knew about in this video. Btw, black rap was a huge influence on Kpop. I'm glad they gave Run DMC a shout out. I remember in the early 90's, there were a lot of NWA fans in Seoul. I also think a lot of the US servicemen stationed in Korea introduced Koreans to Western Hip Hop.
Super informative. Usually kpop lessons start with Seo Taiji and boys, so it was great hearing about the Kim Sisters success from earlier years.
Dang, Ronny Chieng did a better video about introducing K-pop than some of those article writers who claim to be really understanding of the 'K-pop culture' scene out there
I love BTS, and I’m an American grandmother that couldn’t even find South Korea on a map 4 years ago. Their hardships, integrity and talent combined with their authentic and humble personalities has made me a forever Army. 💜Borahae.
I’m a grandmom too, and luv BTS. I introduced them to my granddaughter who wants to be called “V” now. 😂
Ronny Chieng is the freakin' man!!
Love the history of KPop. I started listening to Big Bang then really got hooked onto the only 3 letter that matters in the alphabet, BTS... Lol. 💜💜💜
Still, Ronny, you are the best! 😄
Yayy🎉 VIPARMY
They are on a group hiatus and now are putting out so much content it's overwhelming
"Hiatus" 😂😭
They'll even have a concert in October ;)
well you need to prepare for military so 2 that's why they do that
It's because now it is 7 different content plans instead of 1 and they still have group activities such as concert on October😅
Content coming at us like a freaking fire hose! I almost wish they would pick one day a week that they WON’T release anything so ARMY can take a nap without missing anything. Lol.
Ronny really does a lot for the Asian community with his humor.
I love how educational this video was. Yes Ronny was funny as always but I appreciate the accuracy he kept in explaining the real history of kpop.
This is amazingly informative I didn't know K-pop really stretched that far back
During Japan's occupation of Korea, Trap music, which blended Korean and Japanese traditional music with a little bit of western sounds, was huge and still has a big following in the older generations. Despite whatever is going on politically, Koreans have made amazing music regardless, singing through trauma and making beauty out of pain.
@@eshbena This is amazingly informative I didn't know Trap really stretched that far back
@@eshbena I think you mean "trot music"
@@eshbena Also, trot music was banned in South Korea by that dictator just like foreign music like rock because it was influenced by Japanese Enka music
@@kpopgrrl haha ikr I was legit confused.. I was like that must not be the Trap music I listen too haha
“Let’s get to the real reason you enrolled in this class”…he understands😂😂😂
Excellent. Now I want a full-length documentary on K-Pop.
They exist! PBS did one about a year or two ago.
@@eshbena Thanks. I will check it out.
Korean RUclipsrs DKDKTV have an excellent video on the history of K-Pop and it's a palatable 20 minutes long. (Though I can't promise this won't lead you down the rabbit hole)
no you don't want to see one, it's depressing. the kpop industry is a literal industry with the artists regarded as products not as people. and ronny missed the part where jpop was atleast 10 years ahead of kpop.
@@georgetanasa3843 I'm sure if he was doing a comparative piece between South Korea and Japan, he could have mentioned that, but this was solely about the _history_ of Korean pop music. This five minute video is enough to get someone interested enough get curious and do more research, not detail every influence on the industry. However, if someone get interested enough, maybe they'll even look into the evolution of J-pop as well. It's also an interesting topic.
"But let's get to the group you've been waiting for.. the reason you all enrolled in this class in the first place.." --> couldn't be more ACCURATE for ME
Love the historical context. Thanks, Ronny!
As a Korean this video is so interesting😊 I didn’t even know the history of k pop 😂
I knew about Seo Tai Ji and the Boys and the protest music during the dictatorship, the latter mostly because of K-dramas and other Korean TV shows (best way to learn a language is watch their TV shows), but the Ed Sullivan connection was one I did not know about. Those ladies must have been incredible. I need to hunt up videos of them.
DKDKTV has a video called "History of K-Pop in 20 minutes" or something like that. It's super informative!! I highly recommend that one. The breakdown is so great!
If you're interested, I recommend checking out *KPOP HISTORY in 20mins* by DKDKTV.
Yep, excellent video. I truly thought K-Pop started with BTS. I was happy to know PSY was also part of this. Dang! PSY's song is stuck in my head now. :)
Tells you how old I am - thought K-Pop was a band not a genre. Learn something new every day.
Lol. Some gop guy made same mistake when Kpop fans trolled Trumps Arizona superspreader rally in 2020 by buying up all the tickets and not showing (note: this was all about American fans not Korean performers).
May I just say, the details in this video are great. When Ronny rolled in that TV 📺 with the VHS player on the cart-it took me back to my middle school days.
How can I not know KPop. My daughter has been following these groups before they became known international. 🥰😊❤️❤️❤️ I heard of the heart aches
Seo Taiji and Boys were huge when I was teaching in Seoul in the early 90s.
Ronny is the best sidekick to the Daily Show.
Never got into K-Pop myself. But this was a cool lesson. I enjoyed it.
Came here for the laughs, stayed for the really interesting history lesson ! Well done Ronny Chieng ! 👏👏👏
Thank you for the educasian, Ronny.
I see what u did there, and I really like it...bravo!
Nice wordplay
*Thanks for mentioning the Nation's Girl Group, Girls' Generation 💛*
Been a Korean music (and drama) fan since 2003 when I was 18, not just kpop but also Gayageum Instrumental music and other genres. H.O.T, BoA were who got me hooked on Kpop.
Hi, ShinHwa fan here. Now in my 30's and amazed by how widely accepted Kpop is. We come from a generation that relied on online forums and message boards. I wish we had this outreach back then!
QUEEN BOA!!!!
@@darlabayarea I just love Shinhwa ❤
@@teleriferchnyfain Shinhwa and BoA were legit my gateway drugs into kpop lol. I was an impressionable teenager looking for something different and I found it.

For such a quick and humorous video, it was pretty informative. Even though if I was an inanimate object I would be called an antique 😁 I am still part of the BTS army and have researched a little about the history of K-pop but you've given me some new information. Thank you for the fun and informative video.
Can't believe CL is mentioned in this vid! If you haven't already, check her out! She does her own music, just put out an album independently and is amazing when it comes to writing lyrics! 🔥🍒
i used to be obsessed with that song from 3 ninjas and i recently got into kpop.... this makes so much sense
FINALLY RONNY IS BACKK
"The Birth of Korean Cool" by Euny Hong is a FANTASTIC read that goes into more detail about everything he explained and more, if you're looking for more Korean media history.
Yes, giving CL a shout-out!
Didn't expect this segment.
Thank you! 😁💜
You guys are amazing!
Bring Ronny Chieng more on show
Came for the K-Pop. Left laughing at Ronny Chieng's witty jokes. Thanks Noah!
Yay! Finally something that looks at the history of kpop and takes it seriously while also being hilarious! I wish actual journalists would do as much research as there was on display in this short video.
I SO want to show this to my sixth grade students who are *obsessed.* Can we get an *actual* classroom edit of this vid in time for AANHPI month? 🙏 Nice work as always, Ronny Chieng. I would totally visit Australia for you!
The Supremes were Ed Sullivan's best-loved trio in the '60s but the Kim Sisters were a close second. Tons of female group talent all around during those years.
This is surreal. Korea music history being talked about here
Drunken Tiger is 🔥
As a korean this feels so weird...being educated about my culture in a foreign language
Like watching an episode of 1 Night 2 Days when they are focused on something about Korean history, but you turn off the sound and just read the English subtitles. :)
I really like Ronne Chieng for standing up for Asians. We really need this in these times.
RONNY NEVER DISAPPOINTS.
Ronny absolutely nailed this section. I laughed so much 🤣🤣🤣🤣! Thanks Ronny!
I remember seeing the Kim Sisters on the Ed Sullivan show back in the '60s. Back then, it was rare to see non-whites on television, so it was a rare treat. Thanks for reminding me Ronny. Great video!.
Thanks for the Daily Show! Props on doing your homework! 💜
IKR!? 😁💜
I like how he ended it with gangnam style stuck in his head. I get the feeling. I still remember it. who doesn't?
Whatever you do, don't listen to That That, then!
Ronny proves that it's true what they say: Creativity is when intelligence has fun!
I was a fan of 2NE1 and Girls Generation back in the day.
5:05 Oppa Gangnam style, ooh now it's in my head again , oh get it out .
This is me .
Thanks for the great content! This video covers pretty much everything in just 5 minutes while being humorous- great work! As a Korean person, Im really glad that someone covered Korean artists from the 50s~00s, not just the modern artists.
Ronny Chieng is a living genius.
Must be a dear topic to Ronny.. he didn't do his usual angry antics 🤣
3:14
blackswan: “r u sure about that?”
thanks ronny it's gonna take another 10 years to get that song out of my head.
I grew up listening to Epik High, 2PM, Girls Generation and After School.
LOOOVE EPIK HIGH!
Ronny chieng always makes me laugh. Love him ❤
He got me at the BTS army is now the second biggest army other than the US
america was the last one to join the kpop party kpop was already popular in mostly asia by the late 90s
The dictatorship wasnt loosened just because one got shot in 1979.. Koreans protested and fought back HARD for another 10 years to overthrow the next dictator. Took a lot of killing, torture and perseverance..
"The BTS Army is the second largest military after the US"... Nailed it.
I've had Big Bang's "Made" album on repeat for like the last week, going down memory lane... I miss them so much. Thanks Ronny for such a dope and informative vid. I hope you make more in the future.
I still play it all the time and Alive and all G D kinda surprised BigBang wasn't mentioned
Made, still the greatest album ever released. Every single night, I listen to songs from that album and GDragon's "Untitled 2014". Came into Kpop late in life, broke my femur, went into rehab, was on bed rest for many months. Sister introduced me to kdrama, Watched Scarlett Heart Ryeo, googled Lee Joongi, saw him do a cover of Ringa Linga(Taeyang of BigBang solo),, the world suddenly flipped. Had a LOT of time to research new to me music, still love my Bigbang, still love Lee Joongi, still love Scarlett Heart Ryeo. Differently than lots of other Kpop fans, I grew up in Japan, so Kpop has a nostalgic feel for me. J dramas are essentially what I watched on tv, during my elementary and middle school years. I don't remember English dubbed tv back then, instead I watched long running Japanese tv dramas about volleyball teams, flight attendants and office romances. memories!!!!!
Between this and Roy Wood Jr. giving aespa a tour of New York, the Daily Show apparently makes the best Kpop content. I also had to make sure that Girls' Generation was mentioned.
Thanks Ronny and the Daily Show for a great video! RUclips needs to pay you guys for all the great content!
Great job on the historical content! You nailed it!!
Not gonna lie I *did* come here for BTS... but left with so much interesting new information! Happy to be educated! 💜🤗
BTS isn’t on hiatus. They’re just slowing down a little (from 3 albums per year!). They have a concert on 10/15. 💜
Got a full picture of K-pop. So much fun….
lol we need an Asia Week Tonight like LWT with Ronny as host
Love this. More please and thank you
DUDE!! Australia is fabulous! Y wouldnt u want to visit here??????
and - nice to see a variety of Kpop artists in your video, cause there are soooooo many that deserve recognition along with BTS.... go .... BIG BANG!!!!
This was really well done. That was a fun video and I enjoy the humor mixed in too.
I teach musicians how to teach for a living. I am going to make watching this video an assignment for one of my classes. Thank you for an excellent model on how to make music history fun.
Black Americans really paved the way !!!👏🏽👏🏽

Love how succinct and informative this was….and of course, Ronny never disappoints on the humor.
This was dope Ronny
I'm an AA lover of Michael Jackson, Prince and K-pop!
Yeah, I think I’ll be enjoying BTS pre-filmed content and their large no-skip discography while they’re gone but thanks for the entertaining and informative lesson.
This was surprisingly informative! Well done, Ronny & team!
Fascinating! Thanks Ronny!
2:40 when i was a kid in late 90s wondering why 3 ninjas featuring Korean song rather than Japanese song 🤣 even my mom said that's odd...
"Give them a break, OK? They're the three ninjas, not the three cultural sensitivity experts 🙄"
😝Nailed it. Not to mention, I doubt very much you'd find very many Japanese _or_ Korean people who would care the tiniest bit.
When I lived in South Korea, members of a pop group committed suicide when it was revealed their top hit was a rip off of a Japanese pop song...

That was really fun. Thanks Ronny.
Wow I am shook, I had no idea about the restrictions in music that took place and how hard that must've been. I have a whole new appreciation of kpop now ❤️
I hope Ronnie gets more segments like this. :-)
I have a whole playlist of K- (and some J-)pop. Weirdly enough, I don't have anything by BTS, but some of my favs from the list are VIXX, Big Bang, B1A4, 2NE1, Super Junior, and Girl's Gen. My playlist is a bit old so I think I need to go out and look for some new groups to add.
Finally someone brought J-pop
If you want to continue on the 2nd gen trend, Shinee’s still active! And some former group members have continued on as soloists like Sistar’s Hyolyn. But as for 4th gen I gotta reccommend Ateez. They very quickly became my favourite group, very solid discography, amazing vocals and dancers and they’re also heavily performance based.
뭘 좀 아시는분이네요 ㅎㅎ
Oneus, MonstaX, Dreamcatcher, Ateez (like Jas said), and Enhypen, are some of my present favs. Check them out if you want to expand your k-pop horizons. :)
No BTS on my list at all. VIXX Voodoo Doll is one of my favorites. You should add TVXQ from SM Entertainment. Started as 5, before Super Junior and GG and SHINee, 3 members left, and the other two, goodness, they put out incredible music and are superstars in Japan as well. Also, All of the versions of NCT have some great stuff to offer. My KPOP playlist is huge, minus anything from that other band.
Love this, thank you Ronny.
Bring rohny cheng more on show
WOW! Perfect encapsulation and LOVE the CL reference!!
