You must be quite a lovely person, for to see such goodness can only come from a singleness of eye, a Spiritualization of thought which knows the presence of the Christ and cherishes it in everything you see and do, and feel. So here I shall try to conjure up in words, some assemblance of my sensory perceptions : Shipwreck- a sweet char, as if combined with fresh air and the dampness of a forest floor Air- sharp when a breeze gusts up, soft when in stillness. The air on this water feels slippery, like a salt solution. It has little that is recognizable from an earthly perception. It doesn’t smell fishy, either. It seems to be Mor physical than sensory,. It is more about how it hits my cheek, or how it makes my hair whip at my face, my eyes squint, or not, when it rests. Water- this depends upon what is / has … occurred. It is a shipyard on a kill or straight, so it expresses the sense of turbulence, as when a tug revs up its propellers under the waters at a quite of 3 or 4 AM -of machine oil mixed in mist. It has a grassy memory of seaweed at low tide, and of the heavens at high. It has the sent of sultry on a still summer day … ‘tis a rare sent, for the surface of the water is, though sometimes unaffected by the movement of air, and becomes like the shine of satin, it prevails! It always exhales of its own substance in relation to its depths. I cannot put my finger on it except, perhaps to say it is somehow related to how it smells to pick up a dried bit of seaweed as the sand sifts through my fingers on a walk, where industry has once also trod … of grass, of vegetation, of oil, of steel slag, of salt, and of sweet, of life, ever-present. It is not permeating to me, rather it is evervolving, somehow. I feel the presence of its sent more when it is absent, as when I am walking down the solid streets of Manhattan on a Sunday morning … that is when I am most aware of the depths of the sense of waters all round me whilst at sea.
