- This is a review of the very popular Japanese Hario Skerton ceramic hand coffee mill/grinder. It's a great kitchen tool if you need a custom grind for cold brew or some other specialty coffee.

After getting tired of getting expensive burr mills fixed, this is what I have ended up with and after few years, no issue but satisfaction.
I've had mine 10 years. I tried an expensive electric grinder and although it had 20+ settings I couldn't find the correct grind for my espresso machine. Also, it won't be long until you find that it grinds best (easiest) when you hold it between your knees. And ... it doesn't cost $65 to $70, it's much less than that. You must understand, also, that it can get kind of dreary hand grinding your coffee beans every day, so you must be ready for that.
Been seriously considering one of these. You just sealed it. As a teacher, I need quick access to coffee.
This is the best explanation and video I found about this tool to mill coffee beans, thanks so much! It seems pretty easy to use and I am really considering to buy one for me. Is it easy to clean it too?
Hi, Cris. Thanks for the compliments on the video. Yes it's easy to clean. I wouldn't run it through a dishwasher, but we wash it with a brush and soapy water, then rinse it and let the parts dry. It's stainless, ceramic and plastic. So, you don't need to worry about it staying wet for a while. Good luck.
@@MarkFauntleroy thanks so much! Well understood 😉
@@MarkFauntleroy and greetings from Brazil, the land of one of the best coffee beans on earth ☕🇧🇷🥰
I adjust it 14 notches for french press. It seems to grind a little unevenly. Isn't there an upgrade kit?
Where's the small ,clear plastic washer?
R under the adjuster
Thanks for this! Is the Skerton suitable for french press grind, and Aeropress grind?
MrSoulDevelopment Yes, the Hario can be used to grind coffee for a French Press or Aeropress. Just keep in mind that you are done mg this by hand. So, it will take longer. The Hario grinder can be adjusted to a finer or coarser grind. Use the adjustment collar at the top (where the crank handle connects) to adjust the burr. For example, if you are using the French press to finish a cold brew batch, you'll want a coarser grind for the cold brew.
Mark Fauntleroy Thank you so much for your detailed response!
Hi! Nice review! btw, how does this fare with Porlex grinder?
Ted Schwarz Well I can tell you that the Porlex is a hell of a lot easier to adjust the fineness of the grind! It's surprising how long it takes though.
Can this grinder grind the coffee powder fine enough so I can get a fine expresso cup of coffee from a coffee machine with an unpressurised filter?
7-8 minutes?
whyare you using single use plastic coffee pods. breaks my heart.
