But I do want my major to not solely be education based, it will be very stem focused so that just in case, if I don't want to teach anymore I can have another career path to fall back on, like I could try to become an actuary or go into computer programming.

It’s something I wanted to do as a career but as I got into college I wanted to find something else. I’m 25 years old and I am trying my best to find my calling/career in life. I’ve been thinking about becoming a teacher and one of my worst approaches before even going back to college to become a educator was asking ppl for advice who have had negative experiences with being a teacher. They told me that the public system sucks and don’t get into teaching. I appreciate real honest advice but it seems that they were just projecting all negative advice. And that caused me to be more depressed because I thought I figured out my life with knowing what I want to do but ppl kept pushing me in this vicious cycle of me being unknowing and remaking me doubt myself on what I want to do in life. I had quite the first year of teaching... my classroom management was excellent, I loved my students, but I worked at a school with helicopter parents, so that made the job at times a little difficult. However, what really made me want to not do teaching anymore was not the students or the salary or even the hours spent outside of the classroom... it was the grade level teachers I was grouped with as well as the admin. I plan on returning to teaching, we just completed our family and therefore, I feel ready to go back but this time around I am going to find a school where I feel comfortable and valued. We always talk about interviewing for schools to see if WE are the right fit for THEM yet, we should also choose whether THEY are the right fit for US!

They do some of the most difficult and important work. To be honest I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, I love teaching, learning, organizing, and planning. However I have always been discouraged from this career, the most cons I hear are 1. You don’t get paid enough 2. It’s emotionally draining 3. It’s very difficult to deal with students and parents. I am so excited to teach Spanish!
I completed my bachelor's degree while living in my car; I spent the better part of 5 years traveling around Latin America, and I became fluent in Spanish at 25 years of age. I am currently enrolled in an alternative teaching program to teach Spanish, but as I will be around 8 months to get into the classroom, I've decided to get my CDL. A company will be paying for my training and I will be creating videos during the process and sharing as much as I can for everyone else out there interested in driving! I begin on the 31st.
I would like to teach now, but I have not been able to find any districts that will allow me to teach without a license. For reference, I'm in Ohio!
    Take care.

I cannot believe these teachers that claim they “work for practically nothing”.
I have a cousin who taught for 32 years and now retiring at age 56. She has taught in the same school district in Ohio that entire time. She started making $45K per year in 1992 (but $45K per year in 2023 dollars), and is ending making $77K per year. For her pension she will collect 95% of the average of her top three years salary, so that’s north of $73K per year, starting at age 56. Her mother is still alive at 80 years old, so it’s safe to say she’ll live to at least 80. So she’s retiring on $1,750,000, and that is guaranteed. This is not the same as people whose retirement is in a 401K or other private investment funds.

Hi there, I’m currently in school to become an elementary teacher and working as an associate preschool teacher. Any advice for me? I’m an over thinker and was really worried about my career switch but I know I want to be in education teaching children.

Also we don't get paid during the Summer, so yes we have if off, but we don't receive a cent, unless we work summer school.

Well, it depends on what you choose regarding how you would like your district to divide your salary too. They gave me the choice on whether I wanted my salary divided between a 10 or 12 month period. I chose 12 months and I still felt like my checks were more than fair. However, I do live in California. So we do have the highest teaching salaries.

@@roxanagosman3897 "Twelve-month employees receive 26 checks a year. Teachers are paid bi-weekly on a 10-month schedule, but may opt into an Extended Year Pay program to distribute 10-month salary over 12 months. Most teachers are paid bi-weekly (beginning on the third week of their work year) on a 10-month schedule".
This is the program I opted into. There are teachers who get paid over a period of twelve months. However, if you do not opt into this program, then you are correct, you would not get paid over the summer. You would get a greater income in your checks within the year, but no summer pay. Obviously, if you do not opt into this program, new teachers cannot expect to still get paid over the summer without working.. Since I don't want to work over the summer, I opt to get a little less within my checks however, I do get my summer off🤍

@@Emely.ated_that is a lie, it depends on the contract you choose. There’s a 12 month contract and a 10 month contract. If you CHOOSE to go for the 12 month contract, you’ll get paid a little less every month but at the beginning of summer you get your 4 summer checks at the same time; 4 because you get paid bi-weekly so there’s 2 checks every month so obviously 4 checks for June and July. (at least here in FL) if you choose the 10 month contract then you get paid more every month but you don’t get paid for June and July. It all depends on your contract.

Sure they do! Being a teacher is a calling. One doesn't go into the field for money. That would be kind of stupid. We shouldn't discourage people from entering noble fields. Who will teach your children if not for teachers? Also, EMT workers don't get paid much, should we encourage them to get computer jobs too? Who will help save lives on the front line? I'm sorry if I came off too passionate, but I am passionate about these topics.
