This video is exactly what I was looking for at this time. At age 70 I am looking for a lighter poundage bow to shoot 3D with and possibly to hunt with. I currantly shoot a 51# at 28", but I only draw 26" so I am only drawing 45 to 47# at my draw length. I want to drop down to around 40# at 26". This video gives me a lot of information to go on. Thanks!

I shot a 39 lb hickory self bow last year, put the arrow through the vital v and broke the heavy leg bone on the off side on a big doe. Was shooting total arrow weight of 530 grain arrow with 300 grains upfront. Slow shooter, probably under 150 fps, definitely impressed me on the damage. Bent the old vented Magnus two blade and folded the tip back slightly. Point is, if you tune up a 30 lb bow, it would likely impress with results if arrow set up was high FOC and 12 grains per lb.

Awesome!!! I really needed to watch this video. Watched it a few times and qent down stairs and experimented with my spare arrows. Found a 500 spine 30inch arrow with 200 grain points gave me best accuracy at 19 yards so far from my 35 # longbow so far. Need to get some inserts and do some cutting on my 600 spine to test more. Excellent video. I’m a short draw(25 1/2”- 26”). Rehabbing from shoulder surgery and expect to be shooting one of my Bear recurves that are 50#’s@28. So… your video on light weight bow and arrow combinations for hunting hit the nail directly on the head for me. Also didn’t mention that I will be 71 years old by the time deer hunting season starts so doubt that I’ll be going much heavier than that going forward.

Wow, Jeff please let your Dad know that he is an inspiration to all of us aging traditional bowhunters. We just need to get’um close and only take the best shots but it doesn’t mean we have to stop doing what we love to do, being in the woods and pursuing the elusive whitetail. ❤ from Vermont.
Love your channel! As a former compound shooter, I have always been intrigued by traditional archery, and decided to get a southwest archery tiger shark pro recurve with 35# limbs to start out with. My draw length is 27.5” I’m trying to figure out what arrows to buy, as far as spine and length are concerned. I plan on hunting next season and will up my limbs to 45-50 in the summer. But for now I need some guidance . Keep putting out the great content and may God’s continued blessings be on you!!
For 30+ years I shot a heavy bow 62ish at the fingers and a light arrow. Even at only a 26" draw I had no problems getting pass throughs even on Elk. A year or so back maybe 2 it began to take a toll on the tendons. I went with a light recurve and super heavy front. I am shooting black eagle instincts. Micro diameter. 100 grain outserts. 200 grain tips. Another thing that did for me, it caused me to move from split finger to 3 under. In the old days my point on was 50+ yards. With this new setup. Point on is about 25. So just hold below or at the chest line and bingo.

Hi Jeff, I have to tell you that I have learned so much about tuning and shooting from you than anyone else on youtube. You go in depth about all a person needs to know about target shooting and hunting. I shoot recurves and longbows from 35lbs. to 45lbs. with a 27 3/4 inch draw length and I am using 500 spine arrows with success and no success. By listening to your talk about lighter spine in 600'S and less I have to go to 600. I have some easton platinum aluminum 874 grain arrows 28 3/4 inch that shoot well with all my bows. So what you tell us about working with lighter arrows and weighing the front is true. I am a target shooter I do not hunt and I love shooting bows.

Still shoot aluminum. 1916 and 2016 fly well out of light traditional bows. I sometimes build the shelf out with layers of leather on some bows if I want a certain broadhead weight to fly straight with these arrows. Broadheads that can take glue in, screw in adapters, whether steel or aluminum can fine tune the arrow flight, otherwise you're stuck with trying to make the arrow length work and building the shelf out as the only options for tuning. Shooting Zwickey No Mercy 2 blade in both single and double bevel, 1 3/16 cut. They are close to a 3 to 1 slope. Also like 2 blade Grizzly in 125 grain, no adapter. Steel adapters range from 75, 100, and 125. Aluminum is 50 grains, so you can go from 175 to 250 grains to experiment with for best arrow flight. If you don't want to buy a bunch of different weight field points, you can buy number 10 washers that weigh 12 grains apiece and put up to three of them behind a 175 grain point to test the arrow flight before shooting broadheads.

My buddy killed a doe last season, #35 recurve @ 27” 500 spine GT. it was 200gr head up front i think it was 50gr insert but cant remember. doe was shot about 14yds. 3 blade broadhead that i sharpened for him. I was the old long 3:1 woodsmans and the arrow buried to the fletching. It was his first trad harvest. 🎉

Dog Goneit Jeff that looks my bow you are shooting there, except for the reddish colored wood in the riser. Don't know is you remember my bow, but it was one that was hanging on your shop wall that you sent me when the first ones you made were coming in a little under weight. I have sure been happy with that bow and it shoots extremely well. I was a little doubtful about taking that bow elk hunting this year, but I have come up with an arrow that I think will work really well. First off, I won't shoot over twenty yards. The blind that I will be hunting from is 14 yards from the game trail I will be sitting on, and the elk use that trail a lot. I came up with a Gold Tip Traditional Classic XT shaft in a 400 spine. I have 100 grain insert in the tip and am shooting a 250 grain field point out of them. My total arrow weight with a wrap and four inch fletch, is 695 grains and my FOC is 23.7%. I spent two entire days paper tuning and nock tuning them and they shoot like bullets. They are a little slow (120+ f.p.s.) but they are shooting really good, and at 14 yards they will do the trick. I will be using a 250 grain single bevel broadhead on them, probably from Sirius archery. Thanks for another great video Jeff, keep em coming buddy.

Man, I really do enjoy your videos. I would like to see a build for beginners like for people working with 20 to 25 draw who also happened to be adults with 28+ draw length. Because trying to figure it out on your own, you get a lot of mixed messages. It’s confusing as it is. God bless.

Your videos are so helpful! I shoot a 64" Omega HP-64 Longbow built direct to my specs (40lbs @ 25")...I hunt Whitetail, Black Bear, and will also hunt Hogs in the future. I'm currently shooting a very loaded up 2016 Aluminum cut to 28" (310gr up front). I got some 2019's to try a more moderate build, any thoughts on that? Thanks again for all you do!

Another great video Jeff! To my thinking, I wonder if using a two blade single bevel broadhead might be a good choice for low poundage since Dr. Ashby reports single bevels are more efficient using their momentum. I remember a video you did about a year ago talking about a friend you had up north who shot a deer with a 38# longbow, 420 grain arrow using two blade single bevel who got complete pass through and as you put it "here's the kicker the guy took out one rib on the entry and one rib on the exit!" I was impressed with that story and it made an impression I can't forget. Maximum efficiency with low poundage bows; I'm thinking two blade single bevels might increase the odds in our favor.

I recently got back into traditional archery after a 10 year break and went to my local shop and I feel like they set me up with the wrong arrows. I have a 29” draw and I will be starting with a 35lb longbow until I build up to a higher weight. The shop recommended a 350 spine fleetwood legion carbon arrows at a full 31” length. I feel like this is way too stiff? Should I be using your recommendation from this video? Thanks, huge fan of your videosz
Yes way to stiff, that’s unfortunately very common with shops today but you’ll want to start with 600 spine arrows 👍🏻
Hi Jeff, can you do a video of the best foam archery targets. I use a black hole and after 1000 shots it just goes to hamburg. What do you use and what foam is the most durable foam. I am repairing my targets with EVA foam and it seems to work okay. What do you suggest.

I definitely wouldn’t go over a 40# because you’re probably going to have a fairly long draw length and be pulling an extra couple of pounds anyway, it’s always a good idea to get an entry level bow with cheap interchangeable limbs and start out lightweight like 35# and then go up as you want to that’s going to help you establish a shot process without fatigue 👍🏻

What is the target made of?
Okay Jeff so tell me your opinion on this… I’ve played with some arrows and settled this year on a glass longbow i’m pulling 40 lb at my 29” draw. I’ve finally discovered being a skinnier guy that after years of shooting 50-55 lb bows that I shoot a 40 lb bow so much better. Anyhow a 500 gold tip traditional arrow with 100 gr brass and 200 gr head cut at 30.5 from nock throat to end of carbon. Standard nock with 8” wrap and 4” shield cut feathers. I felt like I needed the 500 spine for the head weight at that arrow length. Am I right in this thinking? My bare shaft test shows good left to right, but of course shoots nock high I believe do to the 300 gr up front as I could not tune this out of it. However once fletched a slow motion recording shows it does flatten out at about 5-6 yards out of the bow and stays true to target contact. Many will hate on me for this and maybe you included, but I will be carrying this setup in the elk woods this season. (The reason for my heavy arrow) I am very confident in my, and the equipments ability to get the job done inside 20 yards as I am not new to heavy, high FOC arrows. Broadhead choice is still up in the air but I have several 2 blades to choose from as I have been shooting nothing but 200gr heads through my bows since I started. Also FYI to all. Shooting this light bow for elk is not something I’m planning to make a habit of and do all the time.
So I have a poundage question? Now I know this is a reach for me but I know of a guy selling a Border Archery bow which is so out of my price range but worth a question cuz I LUV the look of this bow!!! It’s 52# @ 31” draw weight. Now I’m gonna be 27.5-28” draw would that make this bow around 43-44# @28 and would it preform ok at less of a draw?
Well yes and no, I’ve owned several super curves including Border and the limbs are different, they load front heavy then simulate let off like a compound but really they are just not gaining after about 80% of the draw cycle, so it’s going to be very stout feeling at the first part however it won’t be quite that light probably closer to 47-48# just because it probably hits 52# around 29” then doesn’t add anymore through 31”, they’re definitely different and do feel heavier than standard recurve limbs also it’s designed to perform best at full draw due to the curve design so I’d go with medium regular recurve limbs in something else I think you’ll be happier honestly since you’re only drawing 27.5”.

I haven’t tried them yet but they are most likely just fine, I’ve found tons of discontinued compound shafts to work great just can’t find them anymore lol

Yes sir the warriors are great arrows however they’re really lightweight but you can load them up with point weight and they shoot great! The target is a Bone -A-Fide target
easy answer 20gr per pound at a minimum
COMBAT edge on a 2 Blade Broadhead IF you go with a broad head
Combat edge is not a Working edge... a working edge is what a surgeon uses in the operating room... a COMBAT edge is what a LUMBERJACK uses on his AXES

I have a 45# @28 bow. I have a 26” draw. I’m wanting to buy lower pound limbs as I struggle with the 45# after a few shots. Will a 40# limb be a big difference or should I go to 35#?

Is there something a person could be doing with their form to make a bare shaft fly weak like 95% of the time? I put 175 gr on a 700 warrior cut at 28” out of 35 pound Bear grizzly and it’s weak weak. 26 1/2” draw. Fletched arrows are absolutely beautiful and perfect flight just not the bare shaft.
Probably not, you’re bow is most likely putting enough energy even at that poundage to need a 600 spine with any decent point weight and it is probably how the shelf is cut, most 700’s only tune well bare shaft with fairly light point weight.

Jeff, dont know if you read all your comments. but i have what might be a silly question. Can i MAKE my bow lighter poundage by adding say 1 inch of string length? I know sounds silly, but I would anchor at the same spot but not flex the limbs as deep? I think im a little over bowed. Thanks for the great video.
Well in essence it would but it would also reduce the brace height substantially making the bow louder and possibly hitting your bow arm with the string as well as changing the overall performance 👍🏻

hey jeff super good advice on carbon or aluminum do you ever do ,,the old school 11/32 wood shaft arrows or wood 5/16 cedar?? curious what a 31 inch 11/32 shaft cedar arrow and a old fred bear broadhead of 125 grain,,, old fred bear set up,,are they worthy ,,,,i guess we know they are old fred shot every big game on the planet but wondering where they stand at
Yes sir the only problem I’ve had with wood arrows in general is they’re very inconsistent to begin with and incredibly hard to keep straight plus very expensive lol but they are almost impossible to get straight enough for perfect broadhead flight every time and that’s why I personally use carbon or aluminum just for that reason but with my self bows it’s okay and perfectly fitting to go ultra traditional and yes they are okay at really close distances but they will never compare to carbon for consistency and toughness 👍🏻
i dont shoot trad for driving tacs .. the appeal of missing keeps me shooting,,,,im🤔 starting to get bored with moving targets maybe a crooked arrow will be more of a challenge jeff,,,ha

Hey Jeff, just decided to go all traditional got a new bow Hopi recurve 60” 45# I have a couple latter stands on some lease land my concern is shooting and not letting my limb hit my stand. I would like to hear your thinking on this. Do you practice at home from a stand? For the love of the hunt!

Well you can probably just go with 500’s depending how long you leave them like 30” or more should be great with a recurve because you’ll be pulling somewhere around 43# at 29” and you can always add a little point weight if needed, it’s better than starting with an arrow that’s too weak and trying to cut it down or lighten the point weight plus you never want to shoot less than 9 grains per pound of draw weight on your arrows for the life of your bow👍🏻

I have something boggling my mind. To start I have a bear grizzly 44#@28”. My draw length is 30.5”. I have been shooting the big Jim’s dark timbers 500 cut to 305/8” with a dark timber 100 gr insert and 175 field tip. Now bareshaft dead straight. I just picked up the warriors. Got 500 and 600. The 600 cut the same way with same tip and inserts . That is shooting dead straight and the 500 is a bit stiff. What would make that so in your opinion? Does this sound like a properly setup? To me it sounds like it would be weak in theory, but practice is showing different.Brace height is 7.75” . Thank you for your help and for your awesome videos.
Hmm that’s strange for sure but that’s why every bow is different, check them by nock tuning as well, every shaft has a seam which is the weakest side and they have a strong side, just rotate the nock a little and shoot several positions and mark the nock and shaft end to know how to fletch them, I’ll bet the 600 has a really weak spot but who knows until it’s tested 😁
Also remember a lighter shaft like the warriors don’t flex as much because it doesn’t take as much string force to move it as a heavier gpi. shaft like a dark timber.
I was wondering about that too since the gpi is so much less with the warriors compared to the dark Timbers. I bought a couple more warrior 600 which are in the mail and want to test those out also to see if they are the same results as this batch. One last question if there is a knock high that ramps off the rest, why would you go up with Nock point instead of down?
@@bryancheeseman1049 it has something to do with the paradox of the arrow when launching, not just spine bending but I believe it tries to bow up a little and going up sometimes will fix it and if not just have to stiffen up the shaft to handle the FOC that’s why too much on a weaker spine won’t work sometimes 👍🏻

Yes sir it greatly depends on how much point weight you are wanting to run, like with lighter weight for target and 3D a 600 spine but with a hunting setup using 250 grains of point weight or so I’d go with a 500 spine with that draw weight.

Is 800 spine a little too weak to work with for a 30 lb at 28". I was only planning on using 150gr up front. I know this is for hunting but i want to be able to not waste money on arrows lol.

Reffering to the set up you n your dad came up with for him, would a 100 grain brass insert with 100 grain broadhead shoot the same?
40lb recurve, I draw 29". So maybe 42.5lb bow. 500 spine 30" arrow, 50gr insert with a 150gr broadhead. Fast Flight string. 186fps... That's plenty for taking deer.
