I can't believe it's been a year since your brilliant video about rewriting the Sequel Trilogy came out! You did great, Ryan! I wanna give out some stuff that would work: I think instead of being a clone of Palpatine, Snoke should be a trained Sith lord who became a warlord, just like how Maul became one in Clone Wars. I think Poe should be the leader of the rangers bounty hunter crew, and the crew should also include Poe's trusty designated droid, BB-8, and the chipper young navigator Rose Tico, who is like a sister to Poe. I think Rey should go by her original last name, Solana. It's more unique. I think the lightsaber Rey has should be Anakin's old one Luke lost in Cloud City to make 8:24 Ben wanting to train Rey more sense. Kard is a better name than DJ. I think the new rebels who oppose against the empire and the New Republic should be called the Resistance. I think some of the Imperial Remnant officers should be some of the ones from the sequel trilogy, such as Alegent General Pryde, who is Gideon's trusted colleague, along with Commandant Armitage Hux, the son of Brendol Hux and is Pryde's blathering assistant. Speaking of Mandalorians, 16:14 I think Phasma and her older brother Keldo from the comics should be the grandchildren of Gar Saxon, who are also some of Moff Gideon's Imperial Mandalorians. Finn being Gideon's son sounds WAY better then Rey being Palpatine's granddaughter! I feel like Daro and the Knights of Ren finding Ben and convincing him to join them should happen in the second movie of the trilogy. I'm a Ben X Rey shipper. When Ben does join the Knights of Ren, I don't want him to change his name to Kylo, because I think that name should go to one of the other Knights of Ren, mostly like a brother for Saline and a son for Timur Daro. Kutos to you, Ryan! Same with you, Doug! May the force be with you.
@xsanguine8 Rey Nobody was f-ing badass. Anyone could identify with that! But Disney was like 'Nah...you're not as good as our IP. We gotta shut down those dreams right now.'
I'm a firm believer that the sequel trilogy is really two sequel duologies - either you watch 7 and 8, or you watch 7 and 9. The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker just don't fit into the same franchise. Last Jedi is in my top 3 Star Wars movies of all time, so I'll take it as an open-ended conclusion to one of the greatest franchises of all time.
Thats how I felt. Not to mention the theme of anyone being able to bring hope is a much better concept then "you're actually the descendent of one of the most powerful evils in the galaxy"
The parts of the last jedi I actually liked were the parts they redid. Some of the ideas where so bad. But some were so good. He also did not use del torro at all. He was a minor smuggler and then gone. Like why even have him in the bloody movie haha
Can we just agree that the last trilogy didn't exist. It's so infuriating that the screenwriters ignored the vast throve of star wars books and lore to come out with this. Grand admiral thrawn should have been the big bad and not palpatine.
@@Madillusionist Luke wakes up in a forgotten Jedi temple on some forgotten planet. He just had the most vivid force dream. Then he gets up and decides to change that future. They can still use the same characters that they have established in the new trilogy, but redo the entire story with one cohesive unique thought instead of redoing the first trilogy.
I was just going over this at work earlier this week. There's only one Matrix movie, 2 Terminator movies, 3 Indiana Jones movies, and 4 SW movies (OT and Rogue One). Everything else is fanfic.
With you 100% on this... The first mistake was not having a consistent writer/director for the whole trilogy... That said I think what Rian Johnson did (for the most part) was where they should have continued going with this trilogy. I loved the second film - it felt so different and new even with its weak points. And the studio still sold a billion dollars+ in tickets so it was not even close to a flop. Everything in the rise of skywalker was written to appease a bunch of noisy influencers both pro and con of the TLJ and they ended up with a film written by a committee that pleased nobody. I saw it once and have no desire to watch it again anytime soon. To me the true ROTJ sequel is the Mandalorian!
I used to work at a dispensary and JJ Abrams came in the week before Episode 8 or 9 came out. I wish I could go back in time and sell him the shitty stuff
When I first saw The Force Awakens, I left that film believing that Rey was going to be connected to Palpatine. It actually seemed like there were minor clues in that film, too. Rey uses a forward stabbing motion with the lightsabre which is a move that pretty much only Palpatine has used in combat, she's very powerful, she has an English accent, and in the final fight with Kylo she seems to tap into her anger to get stronger. I really thought they were setting it up from the start, even though it sounds like that wasn't the plan. For the record, I think that her being a nobody is much stronger for her character.
Forward stabbing motion, she grew up using a spear to protect herself. Everybody who can does an English accent in Star Wars, at most it could mean she comes from Space nobility. She taps into her anger, because she hasn't been trained to kill her emotions, just like how Luke gave in to Anger and beat down Vader. None of this says Palpatine, but maybe there could have been some nuance changed if it had been part of the plan the whole time.
@ all of those things could have meant nothing, but they COULD have been hinting at Palpatine with them. That’s my point. They could have been hints to a Palpatine connection, just like they could have just as easily meant nothing.
The "even a nobody can become a hero" was right there with a force sensitive Finn. They could have gave us both but no clear oversight on all 3 films fucked it all up
Love this comment. It summarises everything: "Somehow Palpatine return......therefore, Somehow you're a Papatine." It all make sense. ( col 😢 Crying out loud)
When I left the theater after SW9, it was the first time I was legit let down by the franchise and now we’re steadily playing dodge ball with each new outting since. Bleh. The populous wants member berries and not interesting new directions.
I agree wholeheartedly with your points about the reveal of Rey Nobody and the insulting implications of Rise of Skywalker. Rey as no one was such a smart move and really felt like an opening up of Star Wars beyond the Skywalker saga. I think they've now reaped that sowing with the falling off of Star Wars enthusiasm and the flailing around for post-OG trilogy storytelling.
Oh my god, THANK YOU so much for this video. This is exactly how I feel about episode 9. The WHOLE POINT of Awakens and Last Jedi was that a hero can come from anywhere, because the Force is everywhere. Rey being a Palpatine made everything small and stupid. And now Star Wars is taking a lot of time in the shows trying to explain cloning instead of just expanding this wonderful universe.
Also, Luke being sad and grumpy in Last Jedi was perfect. 30 years have passed, a lot happened, the galaxy got bigger, and we only knew Luke for like 5 years of his life in the movies. He made mistakes, he changed and people couldn’t deal with it.
Entertaining movie, but terrible sequel to TLJ and lousy ending to the saga. That said, having Kylo say that Rey is a Palpatine, isn't nearly as bad as when Leia reveals in Jedi, that she's "always known" Luke was her brother. I mean, talk about a story that was obviously not planned out,...lol.
I think, if they wanted to do what they did with episode IX, they should have split it into two movies, which would allow for way more exposition, an explanaition for why palpatine returned, and much more, that would make this movie make more sense...
I saw a fan film type video of a version of Rey's background, it showed her parents before they dropped her on Jakku and I liked it despite at the time being iffy about the sequel trilogy. It gave a bit of background to tie to the first movie, but still leaving some mystery. It's called "Star Wars: Rey's Origin Story a fan film" from Working With Lemons. I would prefer this to the Palpatine twist.
Some heavy contenders here, we have “the dead speak”. My personal favorite “somehow palpatine returned”. “They fly now”, is a close second for me and then there’s the atrocious “Rey Skywalker” line.
18:45 they should have pivoted RIGHT THEN. Once we lost Carrie, they should have let Leia die in the vacuum of space, as they already shot, and allowed her a proper, heroic on-screen death, and they should have allowed Luke to live into the last movie to have a "good" death then.
The part that pissed me off about the "You are a Palpatine." line is because that was a fan theory originally from Nerd Soup and I'm totally convinced that JJ Abrams & Chris Terrio just saw Nerd Soup's video and just threw it in the script. I just hope that Nerd Soup got a residual check from Disney.
For me, as a woman in Star Wars fandom (and fandom in general) "you don't just have power, you have HIS power" is the most insulting line in TROS: a giant FU to everyone who loved Rey Nobody.
The further we get from Last Jedi, the more obvious it becomes that Johnson’s vision was extremely good and interesting. It was flawed in terms of execution, but so was certainly all other Star Wars films as well. Star Wars has always been better at the concept level than execution. Disney should have stuck with it.
8:35 No Ryan, we're not worrying about how we're going to fit into a new trilogy, we are worried about the trilogy sucking ass and repeating the same things that we've already seen, along with the fact that it really doesn't have any new new ideas or try to push the bounds of storytelling and visuals in a way that we've never seen before. That's what I'm worried about, that we're just getting the same thing served to us over and over with a different label every time trying to mask the fact that it's just the same thing, disappointing
"this will begin to set things right" ... that's where the rot started. but for me it was when the main bad guy Kylo, said he was afraid of becoming good.
Kylo Ren: 'Rey...You're a complete stranger, with no prior connection to any of the previous characters and that lets people know the Force doesn't reside in one f**king family line and that anyone can be a motherf**king hero and save the galaxy....So yeah. GOOD JOB.'
I noticed that Marrok had a similar problem to Rey the second we saw the character the fans started to try to connect him to another character. part of me was thinking why can't he just be a new character. when Rey was a no body she was a better character because she was a new character.
Fan's expectations that revolve around legacy, familial connections between characters are so profoundly stupid. Firstly, we've seen it already, in Vader being Luke and Leia's dad. But we also know that Jedi are barred from marriage and romantic relationships and we've seen exactly why. Anakin's love for Padme was the weakness that lead him to fall to the dark side. That's not to even start with the idea of Obi Wan Kenobi having secret offspring. The guy saw his best friend/apprentice/prophesied messiah, fall to the dark side and then apparently thought "Yeah, I'll copy that guy, that seemed to work well." The Last Jedi was a great movie, not necessarily a great Star Wars movie. It's strong points are mostly to be appreciated by cinephiles, not a family audience. Lucafilm should have stuck to their blasters and finished the trilogy how they planned to. Even if the initial fan reaction would have been poor, by this point in time, people will have started to re-evaluate their perspective. As it stands, the damage is permanent. Time is the greatest editor of all and quality will always outlast pandering to public demands (foreshadowing, this is what is happening with Marvel right now). The public don't have a Scoody Doo in a Haunted Roller Disco what they're talking about. If you make something good and they react poorly, in 10/20 years, they'll be pretending they liked it all along.
Thank you for this. I am sure you could have gone on for hours as I can about the rug pull on Rey and how it undid anything new, edgy, or controversial in Star Wars. Glad to hear there are others who felt as let down as I did by episode 9. It was as if, in the backlash to The Empire Strikes Back (there was a big one, I was there) they undid everything that might have been challenging about episode 5. At least Lucas had the guts to say, it done, it is what it is, let’s make the best of it and move foreword. Disney couldn’t do that, no spine.
If it's any consolation, Ryan, Sly Moore is known to be Palpatine's only love interest in canon. Though, it's been "implied" she's not Rey's grandmother.
8:50 This is exactly why I hate Ray, cuz she's a poser who only knows the names of what she's talking about but doesn't know the meaning of what she's talking about, all of her knowledge is service level and all of her excitement and curiosity is because she lived on a desert her whole life and actually wants to see something, not because she actually is, she may have good intentions to see the world, but she's a poser
7:00 not even a post-credits scene. At the end of one of the Star Wars movies, you could have had the emperor's voice and that would have been it just the same dialogue as in fortnite but just at the end of the movies, that would have been enough, but I didn't do anything, anything, anything
I still think Rey should have stayed a nobody, turned to the darkness and it should have been Kylo to bring her back to the light, they stay buddies and train the new Jedi order together.
The biggest Star Wars fans are asking for what the casual Star Wars fans do not want. They read the books, they watch every Disney Plus series, watch every content creator’s RUclips breakdown videos and they think it’s time to move on from the Skywalkers. The vast majority of people only see the movies. They want Skywalkers. Marvel tried moving away from Cap, Iron Man, and the Avengers 1 team, to tell other stories with different characters and the franchise started tanking. Those Nexus characters in Marvel and the Skywalker lineage in Star Wars are the connective tissue of the franchise; thats why Marvel is working to bring those characters back, and why there is so much hostility to the Star Wars sequels.
“Luke, the force runs strong in your family; pass on what you have learned.”. I would argue that the sequels turned the original saga and the prequels from the Skywalker saga into the Palpatine saga. A Palpatine was a live in ep 1 and ep 9, Rey. They tacked on the Skywalker name to Rey and all the real Skywalkers are gone. Awful writing.
Nope. I wanted to see the sequels because (by 2015) I wasn't expecting the follow-up I was expecting in 1983. I wasn't there to see what happened to Luke et al, I t was to see the continuation of the story. I expected, AT MOST, MOST for them to be there as much as Obi Wan & yoda were in the 4-6 as opposed to 1-3. It wasn't their story and was never meant to be.
Episode 8 Is my least favorite movie of all time out of everything... and Im a huge starwars fan.. I dont care how much undoing JJ Abrams had to do it would never be enough to rectify that travesty that was The last Jedi.
The Last Jedi ruined Star Wars. Bad ideas and half-baked concepts in Episode 9 were just confirmation that the story had nowhere to go after Rian crapped the bed
So by the logic that ray was a stand in for the fans they’re outrage now makes sense, they couldn’t handle being called nobodies and then they really couldn’t handle being associated with the bad guys

Hatden Christiansen's acting was the directors fault. Why didnt the director, say , cut, hey hayden you cold or something whats with the shakes, lets take that again. Then its fixed.
I grew up watching the sequels, (of course I watched the prequels and original trilogy before), and I find them enjoyable, and I like watching them, but I have to admit that they are flawed, and in some cases the logic doesn't add up... Is it realistic for that many ships to appear in the fight of exegol? No. but in this case it just looks epic. Should Palpatine have returned, idk, it should have been explained to some extent, but as a normal viewer of the movies, they're still fun to watch.
I HATED THAT "REY PARENTS REVEAL" IN THE LAST JEDI!!!!! To me, it was just another part that ruined the movie. All that hype about who her parents were, and it let to that deflating nonsense. The Last Jedi and the laughable Rise of Skywalker (somehow Palpatine returns lol) sucked and should not be cannon but crappy elseworld stories
To be fair, Ryan has been itching to do this video for a while. For him this is fair, but for average fans they didn't have this meta reaction they were just somewhat confused and mad that their hero Luke has flaws. I like the trilogy for making a good narrative despite the mess up and Fisher's passing. And making the clones actually mean something for Star Wars.
Issue with abrams is he may love star wars but he cant write female characters and he's never stuck the landing of a story arc. His biggest issue with these franchises is he fully relies on nostalgia and it bombs.
Love your show. This one definitely crossed a line though into too many ads and promotions. Come on guys, we don’t begrudge you making money, but we’re not just an eyeball farm for cross promotions
Yeah the canton bright subplot should have broke it for you way sooner, or how the sequals treated hyperspace .....I'll take that line 100 times out of 100 over those breaks in internal logic. Never-ending it's well established in Canon and EU before 9 that Palpatine liked his clones. That line ain't even a logic jump for me vs others. Yep palp is gonna clone and I moved on to enjoy 9.

Kylo Ren: 'Rey...You're a complete stranger, with no prior connection to any of the previous characters and that lets people know the Force doesn't reside in one f**king family line and that anyone can be a motherf**king hero and save the galaxy....So yeah. GOOD JOB.'
What about the Star Wars book series, Jedi Prince, that had the exact same reveal? A kid that people thought is a Kenobi but is a Palpatine.
I noticed that Marrok had a similar problem to Rey the second we saw the character the fans started to try to connect him to another character. part of me was thinking why can't he just be a new character. when Rey was a no body she was a better character because she was a new character.
Somehow, The Senate returned!
The guy saw his best friend/apprentice/prophesied messiah, fall to the dark side and then apparently thought "Yeah, I'll copy that guy, that seemed to work well."
The Last Jedi was a great movie, not necessarily a great Star Wars movie.
What works for some people doesn't work for others. You can never satisfy everyone.
The irony of your use of an Ad Blocker in your first live AD read…
As you bombard us with multiple live reads and ad.
“Dad, it’s the ‘90s, and I’m going to need money for college.”
If it's any consolation, Ryan, Sly Moore is known to be Palpatine's only love interest in canon. Though, it's been "implied" she's not Rey's grandmother.
So much better when she was "nobody."
Kylo Ren: 'Rey....You're a Threepio.'
I like the Lord of the Rings point. For ME, it's John Wick. All I want to do is watch those movies but they aren't streaming ANYWHERE!
The entire trilogy. A new hope remix, a sequel with 80 minutes of unnecessary movie, and then a third movie I will never watch
I want an (out of universe) animated Grogu and Babu Frik buddy comedy
7:00 not even a post-credits scene. At the end of one of the Star Wars movies, you could have had the emperor's voice and that would have been it just the same dialogue as in fortnite but just at the end of the movies, that would have been enough, but I didn't do anything, anything, anything
i don't understand the point about having some nerve to use clones? what does the thing kylo said have to do with that again?
You guys judging shoulder movements now too man 🤦🏽♂️
"I am the Phantom Menace" said Darth Maul calmly.
There are a lot of sentences that ruined Star Wars. Well more like words...
1. Kathleen Kennedy 2. Wokeness 3. The Last Jedi 4. The Acolyte
Rise of Skywalker killed the trilogy for me. I don't acknowledge it as cannon anymore. Episodes 1-6 are all that exist in the Skywalker Saga.
I thought the thumbnail was a team america world police reference but then i remembered that in that movie they were saying "derka derka derka.."
Derpa Derpa Derp in the thumbnail is wild lmao
A universe he stole from the annunaki
1 second ago is crazy
They shoulda just let JJ do the whole trilogy and let him take his time with it.
Episode 8 Is my least favorite movie of all time out of everything... and Im a huge starwars fan.. I dont care how much undoing JJ Abrams had to do it would never be enough to rectify that travesty that was The last Jedi.
Rey nobody Rey is a fricking nobody. Finn should been the main character and Rey
Lucasfilm made a shit show after "The Force Awakens". They should have kept Abrams for all three movies. Johnson does not know Sci-Fi.
Not leaving George Lucas as the brains of Star Wars had the same effect as swapping Jesus for a queen halfway through the Bible...
I can't believe it's been a year since your brilliant video about rewriting the Sequel Trilogy came out! You did great, Ryan! I wanna give out some stuff that would work:
I think instead of being a clone of Palpatine, Snoke should be a trained Sith lord who became a warlord, just like how Maul became one in Clone Wars.
Hyperbolie aside, you are right on point here. Well done.
Once Disney bought Lucasfilm, it no longer was a brand, only a product.
3:14-3:15. I'M GOING TO DISNEYLAND!!!
9:09 Kylo Ren a real Fanboy
Rise of Skywalker was the worst part of the sequel trilogy and it isn't even close
Doug is the only Marvel in our universe
I waited this whole video for "derpa derpa"
I fully agree and have nothing to add!
Issue with abrams is he may love star wars but he cant write female characters and he's never stuck the landing of a story arc. His biggest issue with these franchises is he fully relies on nostalgia and it bombs.
it’s just a bunch of bad ideas incoherence and emptiness. They should’ve kept Lucas’s sequel ideas.
7:12 🤣🤣🤣🤣 thanks for taking the time, Colton.
Chewbacca:"RRrrrRrrRrrrrrr"
Love your show. This one definitely crossed a line though into too many ads and promotions. Come on guys, we don’t begrudge you making money, but we’re not just an eyeball farm for cross promotions
“The toxic fans ruined Star Wars” is the sentence that ruined Star Wars 😭
Hell no I wanted to see a new Star Warsaw with the sequels. I hate the member berries
I enjoy the movies for what they are. All these nerds ruin it for everyone else.
bro you have the LOTR dvd right behind you, doug
looks like return of the king but ya'll gotta have a copy of fellowship
"The Force is Female" - KK
Yeah the canton bright subplot should have broke it for you way sooner, or how the sequals treated hyperspace .....I'll take that line 100 times out of 100 over those breaks in internal logic. Never-ending it's well established in Canon and EU before 9 that Palpatine liked his clones. That line ain't even a logic jump for me vs others. Yep palp is gonna clone and I moved on to enjoy 9.
