Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure was released in 1989 with Alex Winter as Bill S. Preston, Esquire and Keanu Reeves as Ted "Theodore" Logan.
This 1989 science fiction comedy focused on Bill and Ted as they travel through time to abduct historical figures to help them with their oral history final. If they fail, they will flunk high school and Ted will be shipped off to a military school in Alaska thus ending his friendship with Bill and their band "Wyld Stallyns" that will eventually become the foundation of a utopian society far in the future.
With Rufus, played by George Carlin, as their guide they can't fail. Not that the don't come close to failing. Anything that could go wrong does go wrong.
Using a time machine in the form of a phone booth, they grab Napoleon, Billy the Kid, Socrates, Sigmund Freud, Joan of Arc, Genghis Kahn, Beethoven, and Abraham Lincoln.
While Napoleon causes havoc at a local San Dimas water park, the others are getting arrested at the local mall for various disturbances.
Eventually everything comes together at the last second and the presentation is a huge hit. The boys pass History and graduate high school. Rufus returns with the princesses they met in 15th century England as they are destined to be part of the band. All is well and the future society is secure.
Walking out of the theater I really enjoyed the movie. Sure, it was goofy as hell, but it was fun. Bill and Ted come off as total slackers but really they are just nice, innocent guys who are just super chill and happen to love music. They're harmless and I think that's what makes the movie work.
Fun fact: There is an online theory that in another timeline Ted did end up going to military school and eventually becomes John Wick.
