@Martails I used the rubber you linked, purchased a wooden insert from "City side gig" I ended up needing 7mm of rubber around my Ka sensors to get noticeable and much more comfortable results. My drum feels AMAZING. Thank you so much for your help! I also use two 3 pound weights to hold my drum down in the back and I got a pair of $14 wooden "hori tatacon" drum sticks with no tips on the end, I rounded off the edges and waxed the sticks. @@Encrypt2000 ohh so you did the segmented method, and not the loonng loonng strip the original doll tutorial uses? Thank you for your help btw! I can't wait to mod. I ordered a wood plate
Using the CitySideGig wooden plate which feels CRISP. It's padded yet hard, like a hand drum kind of feeling. I'm about to install the 7mm rubber strips!
@@Encrypt2000 I'm modding today, if you're free for a reply. Do you mean 7mm from the ridge and over the sensors, up and down? Or 7mm going across the sensors, side to side? Sorry I'm bad at the word "width," always. Thank you, Drum Master (EDIT: A quick Google shows that width is side-to-side but that means it's shorter than the video's pieces, which is why I'm confused.) (EDIT: I'm A DUMBASS and this ruler is only centimeters and inches. I forgot centimenters exist; I wasn't measuring in millimeters.)
I got the Hori drum about a month ago and even though I was having fun, harder songs were pretty much impossible to do even decently with how hard you had to hit the drums, so I started looking at mods. This video helped me out a ton! I got the same materials you linked in the description and today I did the mod. The don work perfectly from the start, the kas were extremely sensitive, I first used one string of 7mm which was definitely too much; I opened the drum again (which is indeed a pain) and changed the rubber to 4mm. With that the drum feels amazing! No false positives that I could notice thus far, the don is perfect and the kas while not at the same level as the don, still feel really good. I'm glad I found this video, thank you very much!
I want to thank you for the easy to follow tutorial, I bought a tatacon from Japan and I'm from Latinamerica and it was damn expensive. I had to hit the thing with full force for it to register hits and now it works perfectly. I ended up using 2 layers of 3mm hard cardboard and 2 layers of 2mm cork, I just glued all the layers and it worked perfectly. I also got the Ka mod just right the first time by cutting the foam tape in small 4mm stripes.
hey i just wanna flex and say that it only took me about a minute and a half to get the little rubber protrusion guys out on my first attempt with fingers only
Good video. Got round to doing this and this is the best video. Although sadly the KA thing just didn't seem to make any changes. So now I gotta reopen everything and go through that hell again, otherwise having a super sensitive don seems somewhat redundant if I gotta smack the edges with a ton of force. Modding this drum in general is really one of the more difficult mods I've done. Mostly just cos of the rubber pegs which are a nightmare
That ka mod took like 4 tries but finally it's good! I recommend you start with 7mm tall strip and then keep trimming all the way down to 4mm but also placing it a little lower or higher can affect the sensitivity.
I used this tutorial months ago for my original modding, and I felt a huge difference with the dons but the kas were still hard to hit. But, just yesterday, I decided to try adding another layer of rubber, and of course it triggered false positives, but only for the left side? After this, I just got rid of the old rubber and slotted the new rubber in, and it for some reason worked so well. The kas feel as sensitive as the dons now! Also, I think this is still the only HORI guide, and I haven’t heard any good news from their new drums for PC and PS5, so they’ll probably need modding as well. Thanks for the great tutorial!
I went the cheapskate route lol Replaced the foam sheet with a cardboard one instead of wood and filled in the holes on the board with rolled up tissue paper instead of round rubber pads. It actually made the drum too sensitive, I had to put the foam sheet back in and removed several tissue balls in an alternating pattern and it's been working perfectly for months
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I was able to get my ka sensors to my desired sensitvity with 7mm on one side and 6mm on the other, which really does show how finicky each drum's sensors are. It took me 4 tries to figure out the thickness, RIP my fingers.
GREAT MOD! Just I'd recommend for anyone doing this to cut the rubber don replacement in half to avoid both sides pressing at once. The Ka's aren't an exact science either I'd just do it by eye at this point because I felt no difference in the ka's when measuring it out but felt great with a generous thickness. I guess yeah every ka sensor is personalized.
Thanks, great guide. This was my experience for whatever it's worth. 5 screws of course easy. For the wide wire pulled up with a little force then was able to get the end of a very small flat screw driver into the gap pulling created. Then instead of trying to lift with the screw driver I just turned it to the side. That opened the gap more and this way there is no chance of slipping with the screw driver. Then the connector came out easily. For the rubber hooks gently pulling/stretching the outside of the cover near a hook that need to be taken out in the same direction your pulling made it much easier to get them out. Just look for whichever hook looks easiest to get out. Basically take what your given. For the don mode used a cork replacement. Then filled in the holes on the top layer because I had spare rubber but not a full sheet. Used a hole punch to make the small circular pieces of rubber. Yes, tedious, but easy. Results: Dons, much better! Everything registered. Ka's: Worse. I think the rubber pieces made everything too tight and now the rim hits also triggered dons. My Ka's were good before the mod so I disassembled again and removed the extra rubber piece from each ka sensor. Final result: Dons great! Ka's working again: not around the whole drum but all registering if I hit the same area I know is good. Overall: Totally worth it. Nothing too hard if your careful and patient.
Used this method to mod mine, found that the don is perfect and will activate with the slightest touch of my hands, on the other hand despite using a 3-4mm strip i found pretty much no difference with the ka sensitivity and i still had to hit very very hard for it to register. In the end i opened it up again and put another thin strip over the rest of the ka sensors. That seemed to do the trick as while it still isn't as sensitive as the don it only needs a light tap of the bachi (or light/moderate slap of the hands) to register and now i can play songs without having to use any force and it's sensitive enough to play with just your hands😀
Hi !!! I just got to come and comment as I had finally successfully mod my nintendo drum to the most perfect version after opening up the drum for 5 TIMES ! Now, with just a slight tap to BOTH my don and kas, it registered perfectly. I am having much difficulty to find the self adhesive tape that is shown and the black rubber that is shown. So I went and experiment and bought these 2 materials that is easily found from any hardware shop (I am residing in Malaysia btw).
1) For Don - Round Cork - from IKEA standard size (fit the drum back perfectly) - RM8 2) For Don - Silicone Rubber Sheet Translucent 1mm Thick - bought from our local ecommerce Shoppee - RM13.50 3) For Kas - Red Acrylic Double Sided Tape (1.2mm) - bought from any hardware or DIY or Ace Hardware - around RM7 (can't remember) Don is easy, just follow the instruction in this video but using the material I purchase 1) & 2) The trick for Kas is, using the red acrylic tape. Just cut 1.5cm and paste the whole tape (1.2mm) into each Kas censor. That's it. So ultimately I cut 18 stripes x 1.5cm (mine is nintendo drum btw). Paste it as shown just like this video tutorial. Place everything back in and VIOLA ! PERFECT ! Seriously Perfect. To the point I am so confident I can sell my mod drum for $200 if I want. Anyway, becoz of the frustration, I went ahead and bought myself the Taiko Lv5 LOL !! So now I have both perfect drum for 2 players.
Was worried about opening it up but in the past 2 days I've opened it up about 8 times trying to get it exactly how I want in my opinion after trying multiple methods for the Ka's doing the strip is the best method and as said in your video the sensitivity depends on the thickness of the strip so if it is not sensitive enough as of my case then you'd make the strip bigger and vice versa
The cork I used was technically sold as a "cork coaster" for pots and such. I think 1 cm (0.4 inches) is a pretty standard thickness for that kind of thing, so searching for coasters, saucers, mats, etc. should do the trick. Worst case scenario, you may have to sand or file it down and/or stack two of them together.
Chillietoe has successfully completed the taiko mod. When doing the ka mod, I used the rubber linked in the description. I cut it so that it was a 7 mm wide strip. I lined two strips on both sides of the ka sensors. After replacing the don foam sensor and screwing everything back into place, I tested out the drum. The left side of my kas were perfect, whereas the right side was dead. I don’t know why this happened. Maybe it was my wonky placement of the strip (though i thought it was perfect), or maybe I cut the strips unevenly. I’d like to think that the latter was the cause of this, so after disassembling the drum again, I peeled off the strips, snipped some of its width down, and this time, I instead cut them into smaller pieces. I put the individual pieces against the sensors, and after reassembling for the second time, my problem was fixed. I don’t know why my right side was not picking up my hits like how the left side was. I really do think it was because I maybe didn’t cut my strip straightly, and that threw me off. But atleast in the end, i have a perfectly modded Hori (shit drum) controller. Note: i didn’t do this guy’s don mod. I bought a wooden piece from Etsy by the seller, CitySideGig (i love you jonny). I highly recommend this seller.
Honestly I would suggest people try buying a pair of wooden bachi off amazon or something before opening and modding the drum if they're more of a newer or average player... It was a huge difference just doing that in my experience, but I don't know what a modded drum is like or an arcade drum for that matter so I really don't have anything to compare it to.
WOW! This is the video that I really wanted to make in the beginning...Good job! I'm super awkward with the camera/voice and stuff so thanks for making this! I'm selling plates on an Etsy store for those who don't have the desire/means to go through the process with the cork for the Don mod, do you mind if I link your video in my posting to help them with the installation?
@@M4rtalis Awesome! Keep up the content, it was super helpful. I didn't even know about the ka mod. www.etsy.com/CitySideGig/listing/1013011931/taiko-drum-sensitivity-mod-plate?Copy&ListingManager&Share&.lmsm&share_time=1620103851512
I bought a drum for 3 bucks on a flea market, I thought that it was so cheap because of the sensitivity, but it turns out I have quite the same problems everyone else has, so I might just try this mod. Now, if anyone know how to remove the smell of cat piss from the cable it might help too, it turns out that was the reason behind the price lol, it was worth it anyway.
Hey, so I used a wooden insert as well as the rubber sheet you linked for the don area of the tatacon, and I actually had to switch back to using the harder foam with the holes in it instead of the rubber. After a few songs, the rubber had formed small indents from all the little nubs on the inside of the white vinyl/soft plastic piece and actually ended up putting dents into the pressure sensor itself. I was a bit worried that I had broken my tatacon at first because the dons had just stopped working. Turns out it was the opposite, they were constantly actuated. Luckily, my tatacon was fine, and the ka mod worked great, but I guess this shows that there is no be all end all solution to any part of this controller. There's just way too much variation on the manufacturing side. I wish they had put more care into fine tuning each of these before they got shipped out, especially considering how much they cost.
I'm glad yours turned out well in the end. I'm actually surprised your dons gave you more trouble than the kas, though tbh you're right, the whole drum is weirdly designed. I feel like they used soft material in all the spots they should've used hard material and vice versa, which leads to a ton of inconsistencies and, of course, sensitivity issues. It's a shame that they're seemingly shipping out the exact same drum for Rhythm Festival in September and that the next step up is a $480 yuancon drum. Although all the labor, guesswork, and varied mileage almost make it not worth it, I do think this mod is gonna strike the best balance between cost and quality for casual/mid-high level players until another company decides to tap into that market. Makes me wonder how much more popular the game would be if Hori just tried a little harder from the get go.
My dons are perfect now :D I’m not having much luck with the kas after a few shots but my thumbs are blistered and I think I strained a tendon in my wrist so that’s for another day
Lol oh man I cut the strips into small pieces like you did initially instead of one long strip like you suggested right afterwards... should've watched through the whole video, curse my short attention span. Hope it's sensitive enough so I don't need to redo it again. EDIT: Nope, need to open it up again tomorrow lmao. Ka still feels really unresponsive. However my Dons are amazing, and I only put in the rubber adhesive (still waiting for my wooden plate from CitySideGig). It's past midnight here so i tested it out super lightly and even teeny taps on the Don area registered! Anyways, I am NOT looking forward to fiddling with those godawful rubber protrusions again. Gonna start out with 7mm strip to see how it feels. EDIT 2: Yep, 7mm made it miles better! The Kas actually feel responsive now. I played late at night so I didn't hit the drum too loud and it was still somewhat playable, which is pretty impressive. Will try tomorrow in the daytime to see how it feels!
Couldn't get the Don mod to work. The wood I got in the description works just fine with the regular foam, but for whatever reason once I put the rubber on the Don part the left side just doesn't work, and I'm getting a lot of random Kas as well when I hit the right side Don as well.
Have you removed the rubber? If it isn't coming off normally you can try using IPA or a flat head screwdriver. The wooden piece is really the important part of the mod, you should see improvement even if you keep the default foam or don't use anything else at all.
Im going to try this later on today. Got some 1cm wood in prep to cut my own and as i dont have any rubber sheet and im a cheap skate in going to use a length of faux leather ive got for for the pad. Will report my results.
Sorry guys. I did eventually mod it the way describe above and its shit hot. Almost sensitive enough to play with my fingers. No more missed hits now.. Well not ones that arnt my own fault.
Hi all, I have quite an issue. I have bought a brand new Hori drum and tried to improve the sensitivity of the don's and the ka's, following step by stem the guide with the Ikea cork pot holder for the don's and the soft black thin sticker patches for the ka's, ignoring the step with the little holes filling. I have done evrything very carefully, market the cables, taken photos, and re-assembled everything perfectly. Now, the drum is still receognized, all the buttons of the front pad area are all fully fuctionning, but... the don"s and the ka's seem to be completely dead! They aren't working at all, whatever how hard the drum is hit. I have then: first: replaced the cork pot holder and by the original foam and re-tested: same result. Then, removed all the little black soft stickers on the ka's : same result. The crazy part is that if I press the home menu, get back to the game, and press the drum don's area to exit the automatic pause menu: the don is then recognized! And it is recognized anywhere I hit, which means that, at least both left and right don"s areas aren't dead at all. But this is the only way that the don's are recognized. I can't tell for the ka's as they aren't recognized at all. I have checked the cables, connections and everything looks fine, nothing seems to be broken, damaged or touching be geeting in contact with another connection. I haved tried to re-open/test it about 5 times now. My fingers are on fire (due to the part where the top part needs to be removed) and the results are always the same. The drum is now exactly the way it was before being opened but still doesn't want to get the don's and ka's to work. Did anyone experienced something similar ? Any test/fix I could try? Thank you in advance for your help!
Since the drum is HID compatible, I would recommend plugging it into a PC and finding a controller tester online. See if your dons and kas are registering there. If they're not registering at all, something might be broken or one of the connections may be loose. If they're sometimes registering, place the cork and rubber back into the drum and try again. If they're constantly registering even when you're not hitting anything, it means there is too much stuff inside the drum and you may need to remove some of it. Another thing you can try is to make sure you don't press anything on any controller once you open the game on your switch. If you enter the game with any other controller, your in-game controller mode will switch to Mode 1 and your drum may not register. For reference, the drum's controller mode is Mode 4. Hope this helps!
@@M4rtalis Thank you for your answer. The issue was actually coming from my Switch and/or the game itself (Dream n'fun). I actually had to start the game with the drum plugged in, select the mode and song via my pro controller, then exit, then restart another song by tapping on the don this time. This fixed the issue once and for all. Not sure what happened. I since reopened the drum and successfully managed to do the don's and ka's modification. Sensitivity is about 30% better for the don's and 10-15% better for the ka's, but not yet where I want it to be (still need to hit a little bit to hard/loud to avoid any missing hits). I might double to thickness of the rubbers for the ka's and do the filling holes step for the don's.
Hi! Thanks for the very helpful guide on modding the drums! Currently collecting materials for this and was wondering if it's important to have the top cover of the sensors and the "ka" mod strips to be rubber? I'm finding it challenging to look for rubber with adhesive but found a 1mm Eva Foam w/ adhesive. You think it could work as an alternative? :"(
I think it should be fine. The idea is that you want something solid enough to transfer the force of a hit to the sensor, but soft enough so that it doesn't break anything. I'm not really familiar with Eva foam, but I'd say as long as it's sturdier than the foam on the don's you're good. Also, just make sure the adhesive isn't super strong, as you want to be able to remove it without the need for solvents in case you need to readjust something.
Thanks for the guide, still I haven't bought the drums yet because of the amount of mixed reviews and sensitivity issues (also kind of expensive considering what you need for the mod + shipping). I just hope that eventually Hori makes a revision of the drums that fixes those problems and also making it available for more countries after the new Taiko no Tatsujin game drops this year.
You would need some kind of padding between the Don sensor and the face of the drum regardless of what you put underneath the sensor. With a wooden insert you might be able to get away with using the default foam padding, though I think the rubber would produce a noticeable improvement.
Sorry I saw this a week late but thank you! I ask because in the video I saw, city side gig just put the wooden don insert without using rubber so I wasnt sure. I'll probably try without it at first and then if I'm not satisfied then I'll try the rubber
This should work www.amazon.com/Resistant-Silicone-Rubber-Gasket-Adhesive/dp/B06XWMTSGJ. If you look around on other sites for 1mm or 1/25-inch adhesive rubber you might even be able to find it cheaper
I think the older Tatacons (Wii, PS2, etc.) have similar Don's to the newer ones, but the Ka sensors are different. I'm not sure though, as I don't own an older one.
It makes the connection between the face of the drum and the Don sensor tighter, which in turns lowers the amount of force you need for a Don to register. Replacing the rubber isn't as important as replacing the plastic though, so don't worry if you can't find a replacement
How did you end up getting the rubber adhesive off the KA sensor without damaging it? I've got to pull it up and redo it. Do you think alcohol swabs would be safe to use?
For me it came up without much of a fuss. If it's sticking really well for you, then yeah I'd try 70% alcohol, like the stuff you can get at the pharmacy. I wouldn't go higher than 70% or else it might damage something, and make sure to use it sparingly.
Ok I got a wooden insert for my Nintendo switch tatacon. Should I still use a rubber sheet over the sensor area instead of the mesh already installed on the drum?
If the wood is 1cm thick, yes. The rubber is a little thicker and a lot firmer than the mesh, allowing for the force of a hit to transfer better. I imagine it allows for better rolls, too. The rubber I used comes off rather easily, so even if it's not to your liking it shouldn't be difficult to remove.
@@M4rtalis I believe so, I bought the wooden insert from CitySideGig, the channel you featured on this video. She said the wood panel is 0.4 inches thick. Aka 1.01cm.
It's almost definitely not broken don't worry. If you know approximately where the offending areas are, just go back in and adjust the rubber strips. If the kas are actuating when they're not supposed to, you need thinner strips (less length from the rim). If they're not always registering (not actuating enough), you'll need thicker strips. I'd only go about 1mm at a time if you can, especially if they were working once. Hope this helps
@@M4rtalis I'm sorry. I should have stated that I haven't done this mod. My drum is stock and having these issues. I apologize if I'm being a goof and asking in the wrong place.
I don't use double sided tape in this video, the rubber I used already had adhesive on it. If you're gonna adhere the rubber manually, I would strongly recommend against using glue or strong tape, especially on the Ka's, which require some trial and error.
Hi I have an issue that my left ka registers as constantly pressed. I never modded my taiko and think that maybe it deformed the rim slightly by hitting too hard. Do you have any other idea how to fix it?
Sorry, I just saw your comment now. I'm not sure what would cause something like that, my guess is either something is deformed or there's a faulty connection on the PCB. Disassembling and reassembling the drum might help. If you notice any deformation, unfortunately I wouldn't know how to reshape any of the parts aside from using my hands, so if you want to do it properly I'd recommend looking for other tutorials on reshaping whatever material you're working with
If it's not responding at all, it's probably either a dead Don sensor or a loose connection on the PCB, neither of which would be fixed by this mod unfortunately. It may help to open it up, take everything apart, and put it back together. Though if you can get it to register a right Don at all, it probably can be fixed with this mod, as that would indicate it's just a sensitivity issue
hi, i did this mod a few days ago and right now the only problem i have is the right ka doesn't register at all in some spots. can this be fixed by just adding some more rubber?
If it's absolutely not registering at all, check the connections on the PCB first. If it's still not working after you've adjusted them, more rubber may help. Make sure it at least partially covers the black sensors. Hope this helps!
@@M4rtalis hey, man. i checked the connectors and that didn't seem to be the issue and i tried replacing the tape and it fixed that issue. it did give me a few small issues on their own but they seem relatively easy to fix. thank you for responding!
The front portion of my drum, the section over the buttons is protruding and wont set into place, is that becuase the cork is to thick? or something i did?
If you're gonna open it back up to fix it, I'd say measure the cork first. If it's thicker than 1cm, then yeah it's probably because it's too thick. If you replaced the rubber on the don sensor, that might also be too thick, though I think that's unlikely. What most likely happened is that you cut the cork too large for the face of the drum to slot back in correctly, in which case all you need to do is trim it down.
After I put my drum together my right Ka doesn't register. So dissapointed I must've damaged something. If someone has any idea of how I can save my drum please let me know
@@M4rtalis Yes they where plugged in completely. However I removed the rubber from the Ka sensors and then they started to work again! So glad I don't have to buy a new drum. I think the placement of the rubber was messing with the sensors resulting in them not working. By the way I really enjoyed this video, deserves alot more likes and views.
Im currently gathering materials and have trouble finding tne right sizes here in my country, i was wondering if anyone can share the template for the wood or cork filler i want to try to buy from etsy but the fees are killing me, im too far from the vendor, thanks
I just bought some wood/cork from hardware store, traced around the foam that was already inside and then asked around to see if anyone could cut it out for me
Probably best not to use a magnet sheet as it might interfere with the components inside. A normal rubber sheet and some double sided tape should work fine if you can find those
Yeah, it should work. Even if it doesn't, once the drum face is back on it'll be held tight enough that it won't shift around much regardless, so don't worry too much about it
Maybe, my only concern would be being able to remove it if you ended up with too much sensitivity. You want to be able to remove it easily and without leaving too much sticky residue.
I did this method around a year ago and I did Initially really enjoy the results. As of now it’s a bit of a mess as both Ka’s tend to trigger the right Don due to the mod. Likely due to user error but just a warning this can cause it to malfunction if not done carefully. If anyone has any tips on a fix for my issue as well that would be appreciated.
Hey, I've got a problem. I modded my tatacon, the sensitivity is great, but the right don and both ka's are being recognize as the same button ( the left don staying the same). Does anybody have an idea on how to fix this?

Alright so I ended up getting the wooden insert and did the whole modding stuff myself and while the controls on the bottom still work, the drum don and Ka areas both don’t work at all, I’m not sure if it’s because it’s counting an on position all the time or if I messed something up, any ideas what could be the case?
Yes sir! I just opened the drum yesterday and it almost looked exactly like a hori drum. I already modded the ka buttons by putting an electrical tape per ka button. it's a trial and error since the right ka side was pressed to tight. had to leave the last 4 or 5 ka bottom buttons on the right without elec tape, and it's ok since we only hit the top part. my ka buttons are now working just fine! i still don't have a cork or wood to mod the don part but yes, it can be done since the default was also made only of foam and removable. thanks for the video sir!!!
hahahaha i put two layers of rubber on the kas and theyre pressed down all the time!!! cant wait to open the drum again!!! Edit: i put the drum back together and the right don stopped working but it works when i take the cover off???? and even when i take the cover off it’s still not sensitive as the left side :/
@@tomydoesstuff1851 I mean it was a little hard at first but after a month at most it had pretty much no issues. I do use actual wooden drumsticks rather than the plastic ones that come with it though, which makes it much easier to do rolls.
Sorry to hear yours was too thick, but I made sure to link the exact product I used for my own mod. In fact, the Amazon listing even mentions that it's often bought together with the drum, so I don't see how it could be wrong. If you have any way of measuring it, how thick is the cork you got? And are you sure it's actually not registering and not, instead, constantly actuating? That'd be the more likely result if the cork is really too thick. If it's truly not registering at all, it's more likely that the connection on the PCB is loose or the rubber and cork combined are too thin.
so ive tried 2 pieces of rubber on the ka sensors but now it wont even register the input. Oddly enough, it saw the input with 1 piece of rubber. Would you recommend 3 pieces of foam?
Are you sure you're seeing no input rather than a constant one? In any case I don't think adding more material is going to help, if you can get consistent inputs with 1 piece, I'd cut your losses and go with that even if you need to hit a little hard.

I also got the Ka mod just right the first time by cutting the foam tape in small 4mm stripes.
hey i just wanna flex and say that it only took me about a minute and a half to get the little rubber protrusion guys out on my first attempt with fingers only
really trying to *rub* it on him
Fantastic! worked like a charm. We were lucky enough to get the sensitivity right the first time by learning from your mistakes.
I went the cheapskate route lol
Replaced the foam sheet with a cardboard one instead of wood and filled in the holes on the board with rolled up tissue paper instead of round rubber pads. It actually made the drum too sensitive, I had to put the foam sheet back in and removed several tissue balls in an alternating pattern and it's been working perfectly for months
how about fill up these holes with cardboard too
Thank you so much for this tutorial!
That seemed to do the trick as while it still isn't as sensitive as the don it only needs a light tap of the bachi (or light/moderate slap of the hands) to register and now i can play songs without having to use any force and it's sensitive enough to play with just your hands😀
tokaku did this with foam, I wonder what the difference is between using foam on the sensors and rubber
@@Kairibeachgahmm im not too sure but foam can be quite cushiony compared to rubber so i imagine it absorbs the shock more
1) For Don - Round Cork - from IKEA standard size (fit the drum back perfectly) - RM8
2) For Don - Silicone Rubber Sheet Translucent 1mm Thick - bought from our local ecommerce Shoppee - RM13.50
3) For Kas - Red Acrylic Double Sided Tape (1.2mm) - bought from any hardware or DIY or Ace Hardware - around RM7 (can't remember)
Don is easy, just follow the instruction in this video but using the material I purchase 1) & 2)
The trick for Kas is, using the red acrylic tape.
@@tanlionel9030 awesome! I'm curious, does the acrylic tape stick to the drum face or is it easy to remove if you need?
@@tanlionel9030 thanks, fellow Malaysian!!!
I never understood how ppl do drum rolls with the switch version, now it makes so much more sense.
I just bought one and did not realize how fucked I was. Thanks for the guide. Wish me luck
Five tries and still can’t get the Ka’s to function properly. This is so frustrating.
The problem being is that the cork in the description is out of stock and im currently trying to find another one.
It seems that this modding process can be applied to the IINE Risecon as well
Chillietoe has successfully completed the taiko mod.
I highly recommend this seller.
my dumbass tried to use flex tape for rubber, now i gotta wait with my tatacon opened up for like a day so my rubber strip can get here lol
i've modded by yours guide, but used foam tape instead and all works perfectly!
can you send a link to where you got it? thanks
Thank you this guide is amazing
Honestly I would suggest people try buying a pair of wooden bachi off amazon or something before opening and modding the drum if they're more of a newer or average player... It was a huge difference just doing that in my experience, but I don't know what a modded drum is like or an arcade drum for that matter so I really don't have anything to compare it to.
I just got my hori tatacon and I didn't expect it to be so bad 😂
I’ve had one for years but barely use it cos it’s garbage, it’s so disappointing. After years of gathering dust, decided to finally mod it
I don't mind at all. Also, if you want, I can link your etsy page in the video description if you send me a link.
Now I want to beat sm64 on taiko drum
anyone tried electrical tape for the KA’s?
ive modified my midi drum pads for music production with it before and gotten amazing results!
@@M4rtalis Yeah, removing the rubber worked. It just sucks that the sensor got all sticky. I tried to remove some of it with rubbing alcohol though.
Im going to try this later on today. Got some 1cm wood in prep to cut my own and as i dont have any rubber sheet and im a cheap skate in going to use a length of faux leather ive got for for the pad. Will report my results.

@@M4rtalis Got it!! Will check the sturdiness and stickiness of the eva foam as well beforehand. Mega thanks for the advise! 😄
Did you use rubber for the don mod because you used cork? If I were to use the wood instead would I need to use the rubber there?
You would need some kind of padding between the Don sensor and the face of the drum regardless of what you put underneath the sensor. With a wooden insert you might be able to get away with using the default foam padding, though I think the rubber would produce a noticeable improvement.
Sorry I saw this a week late but thank you! I ask because in the video I saw, city side gig just put the wooden don insert without using rubber so I wasnt sure. I'll probably try without it at first and then if I'm not satisfied then I'll try the rubber
@@majunior6173 How is it without the rubber?
The rubber linked in the video isn't available, is there a similar type of rubber elsewhere?
This should work www.amazon.com/Resistant-Silicone-Rubber-Gasket-Adhesive/dp/B06XWMTSGJ. If you look around on other sites for 1mm or 1/25-inch adhesive rubber you might even be able to find it cheaper
I have an old PS2 tatakon from the old PS2 game.. I wonder if I'd be able to do the same mod on it... 🤔
Thanks for the video
I think the older Tatacons (Wii, PS2, etc.) have similar Don's to the newer ones, but the Ka sensors are different. I'm not sure though, as I don't own an older one.
What's the point of replacing the original rubber mesh with the custom rubber sheet at 5:03?
It makes the connection between the face of the drum and the Don sensor tighter, which in turns lowers the amount of force you need for a Don to register. Replacing the rubber isn't as important as replacing the plastic though, so don't worry if you can't find a replacement
@@M4rtalis thanks! I ended up using the rubber sheet and it's really responsive now! 😄
Aka 1.01cm.
do we need to replace the foam with rubber as well? Wpuld the sens still be bad if not replaced?
Yes, the rubber is thicker than the foam so it's pretty much essential for fixing the sensitivity
Is there any drum that doesn't need a mod, I'm not very good with taking things apart myself.
The only reputable drum I've seen is the taikoforce but uhh... have fun paying for one
Thanks for this video, you are the only one out here
Unrelated point your voice gives me sasuke uchiha vibes I love it
the cork i've found in a store close to me is 19cm ins diameter, is that too small for the drum?
My right Ka started rapid firing on its own. I played recently and my hits wouldn't always register. Is there any way to fix this or is it junk now?
It's almost definitely not broken don't worry. If you know approximately where the offending areas are, just go back in and adjust the rubber strips. If the kas are actuating when they're not supposed to, you need thinner strips (less length from the rim). If they're not always registering (not actuating enough), you'll need thicker strips. I'd only go about 1mm at a time if you can, especially if they were working once. Hope this helps
@@M4rtalis I'm sorry. I should have stated that I haven't done this mod. My drum is stock and having these issues. I apologize if I'm being a goof and asking in the wrong place.
Does glue work as a replacement for the double sided tape?
I don't use double sided tape in this video, the rubber I used already had adhesive on it. If you're gonna adhere the rubber manually, I would strongly recommend against using glue or strong tape, especially on the Ka's, which require some trial and error.
Thanks!
If you notice any deformation, unfortunately I wouldn't know how to reshape any of the parts aside from using my hands, so if you want to do it properly I'd recommend looking for other tutorials on reshaping whatever material you're working with
would this make my unresponsive drum work or is something else wrong with it because I got mine today and the right side don just stopped responding?
Jesus christ why are the music transitions so loud
After I put my drum together my right Ka doesn't register. So dissapointed I must've damaged something. If someone has any idea of how I can save my drum please let me know
Sorry to hear about that. Did you make sure both cables were plugged completely into the PCB before closing it?
@@M4rtalis Yes they where plugged in completely. However I removed the rubber from the Ka sensors and then they started to work again! So glad I don't have to buy a new drum. I cant seem to find an adhesive rubber sheet the closest i can find is adhesive magnet sheet...can I use the magnet sheet?
Probably best not to use a magnet sheet as it might interfere with the components inside. A normal rubber sheet and some double sided tape should work fine if you can find those
Thx for the advice! I will search for those rubber sheet
Also can i just like find normal double sided tape(the strip one) and just tape it to the rubber?
Yeah, it should work. Even if it doesn't, once the drum face is back on it'll be held tight enough that it won't shift around much regardless, so don't worry too much about it
Thx for the help bc i just found the rubber without the double sided tape
Do you think I could use double-layered electrical tape for the rubber strips?
Maybe, my only concern would be being able to remove it if you ended up with too much sensitivity. You want to be able to remove it easily and without leaving too much sticky residue.
I did this method around a year ago and I did Initially really enjoy the results. As of now it’s a bit of a mess as both Ka’s tend to trigger the right Don due to the mod. Likely due to user error but just a warning this can cause it to malfunction if not done carefully. If anyone has any tips on a fix for my issue as well that would be appreciated.

Can I send my drums to you and pay you for materials and labor and shipping to do it for me?
I've been easily passing top difficulty songs with an unmodded tatacon for months now. Is that not normal...?
How long have you been using the drum (or tatacon) for? Was it hard to get inputs at all towards the beginning?
@@tomydoesstuff1851 I mean it was a little hard at first but after a month at most it had pretty much no issues. I do use actual wooden drumsticks rather than the plastic ones that come with it though, which makes it much easier to do rolls.
DUDE YOU LINKED TONTHE WRONG KORK PLATES!! Those one are too thick to function and won’t register ka at all. Super annoying mistake and wasted money….
@@M4rtalis it was weird, i got better results by moving it down the sensor but 2 strips on top of each other didnt give me anything the first time
