🤗💯❤️ that’s frickin awesome! I have a 10 week old Shepweiler and he’s a tank on four paws but so wants to learn and listen (outside of sudden bursts of zoomies 😳)… my pitty is an amazing mentor however. I honestly am not a food motivated trainer though, I have always had success with enjoyed engagement and knowing when to stop. Probably because of training whilst training with livestock.
I just rescued a 5 month old gsd puppy. She had never been worked with and had been kept in a small cage. She is doing pretty good after one week. However, her attention span is very short. She is just so happy to be able to be free. Love you videos
What about just a very short training time of say, 3-5 minutes x 8 per day? I usually have my puppies with me all day so the training really doesn't stop so to speak. But for the sit, watch, down etc some people I have seen personally go on and on until the pup gets bored and loses attention and then loses the attention all together.
How is she doing now? We are receiving a 5mo GSD/Black Lab mix this week and are wondering how he will take to training. He too was in a crate most of his first 4 months. Happy to be out though.
You know what really impressed me about this video? For non-dog trainers, this may seem like a very minute, unimportant detail, but it can be VERY important.. I have NEVER seen someone transition a dog from a sit to a BACKWARD down as you did in this video. Their natural movement from a sit to a down is just to move the front paws forward. BUT.... in the future, if your dog is about to run across a dangerous street and you need him to STOP IMMEDIATELY, you do NOT want him crawling forward into a down! You want him to go into a backward down and SCREECHING to a halt. I don't know how you accomplished this sit to backward down, but it is VERY impressive. I've just defaulted to never transitioning from a sit to a down but always a stand to a down, but I would love to know how you taught that! As I said... in years of training, I've never seen anyone accomplish that! VERY WELL DONE!!
Saw your videos and got excited about training a dog. Yesterday I bought a 12 week old GSD and I'm learning to train him. Something happened where he's fearful in general unfortunately and his food drive is slowly getting better. But these videos have been extremely helpful, day 1 of training and he's already sitting, laying, and staying based off hand gestures. His strengths seem to be coming and heeling.
I think my GSD has ADD because even though it was easy to potty and crate train him, he is very high strong and sit and PAW is the only thing I'm able to get out of him. He walks well on the leash and doesn't pull, but his attention span right now is that all the goldfish.
If you would have kept your puppy in a room with zero items other than you and treats or you and toy he would learn that the only fun is you. It makes puppy’s not crest bad habits like running around the house chewing or tugging on everything aka “low attention span”
@@RiRyn27 yeah, but why would you teach a dog that command. Reactive dogs will offer up behaviors for rewards. Do you really want your dog to start pawing strangers in hopes that they give him treats. Nah. Choose different commands. Think about what you’re teaching him.
@@MagnusFXT must be personal to your experience. I've had 7 dogs in my lifetime, 6 different breeds (husky, shepherd, rottweiler, shih tzu, malamute, terrier) & none of them ever gave their "paw" without being asked and never pawed at anyone.
Love this age and the engagement. My pup is a sable also. That black stripe on his back will eventually spread out down the sides. Going to be a great looking dog.

Thank you for this video! We just got a Shepsky puppy & this is so helpful for me to think about all the things I need to do to help her grow to be a great dog!
Lol, my GSD is at ten weeks... Looks like I have work to do! She really has no attention span right now and is not food/ trear motivated. She doesn't really listen much, shes more sight focused as well. I do a little work with her but just letting her play and be a puppy as well. She is resistant to the leash unless I take my older dog together on walks she stays in cadence with her. She is really young but this is a great starting point! Thanks again!
Awesome video your technique and control are amazing maybe you can show a new puppy that you just started to train to compare and contrast….thanks again
I have a 4 month old working line GSD that is reactive to other dogs, he’s starting to pull, and won’t potty train. All his other training has been good. Hes not like a “normal” puppy, his brain is always in work mode and seems serious all the time. Would he still benefit from the puppy package or would I need to bump him up?
Love the videos, very educational. My 5 year old German Shepherd has cleaned up his training by your information in your videos. I have a 9 week old GSD also, what size prong collar would you recommend for that age/size?
@Americanstandardk9 how do I begin this? I just brought home a 9 week old GSD yesterday. I love this training but what are the very basic beginning stages of this?
My German Shepherd is a little over a year old… I rescued her from people who were clearly not able to take care of five puppies and two adult German shepherds, they were running wild in the neighborhood and I offered them $50 for one of the puppies and they said yes so I took her home. She was three months old when I got her, she was wild no training at all. Very rambunctious able to focus. She still has a jumping habit which is absolutely dangerous. she is broken. My foot tripped me cut me with her nails when I opened the door and she raced out running over my foot thank God it was the back door and she was only going potty, but she has so much undisciplined behavior to correct she jumps up on you she does not stay. It’s almost as if she can’t like her body won’t let her do it. She’s so much of a child she is getting better but man she is a handful if you do not discipline her and make her do it over and over and over and over and over again she just doesn’t get it, I guess this is because she was three months old when I got her almost 4 months and did not have any training. We are way behind unfortunately but she’s trying she can sit. She can lay down ,she can stay a little bit she’s getting better…😂 but the jumping up on me is really hard to deal with. I kick her in the chest with my knee. if I catch it, the thing is she does it without being aware of when she’s going to do it it’s like she won’t do it once and then she’ll run right back 10 minutes later and jump up on you. It’s like you can’t figure out when she’s gonna do it and then she jumps from behind like she’ll come up from behind and jump on me. It’s crazy I’m only 5 foot and I weigh 112 pounds and she knock me on my butt. She has knocked me on my butt actually several times I wish I could fix it.
I got slack for putting a prong collar on my GSD at 5.5-6 months. She was already 50-55lbs. I have injuries that hurt when being pulled plus I refused to be dragged when she saw people/dogs. It was the best thing I’ve done.
How old did u say the pup in the video was? I have a gsd pup born on nov. 23rd 2023. Its Jan27th '24 and my pup is smaller than the pup in the vid. His ears havent yet stayed up theyre still floppy. His paws are HUGE and he walks so funny due to his huge paws lol😂 HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO POTTY TRAIN HIM?? ROUGH EST? Ive had him for a week now. Beautiful pup btw
I am 2 weeks into training my 11 week old gsd. He can do all of this, but his "watch" is a quick glance that he doesn't hold. I'll have to work on that!
Why correct after it happened and he is doing something you had want. Like a sit. So like if you corrected exact moment that he was eating rhe dirt that would make sense but if you do a correction while he is doing a sit then wouldn't he begin to think that sit is something you don't want?
All babies need instruction. My last canine unit was a timber wolf hybrid. She was a great beta. And ended up being my service animal. I have trained stallions with nothing but a rope halter. Teaching is always the key. Force is never the solution. You just have to be a better dog, cat, horse, or even fish.
In my experience if your dog/puppy is food driven you can use kibble for training. If not really food driven a more stinky treat can be a better option for training.
My Gsd puppy knows sit, shake, down but not the best at it. He knows to look at me when I say his name. I'm working on come and stay. But I'll need distractions for it. My last one was aggressive with dogs and people .. I'm doing my best to try and make this dog okay with both because I want to train him to be a diabetic service animal. Well see how it goes. My last one had an extremely high drive.. this one doesn't seem to have that. But he's already barking at other dogs. . He's 2 months old.
Use food. The majority of a young puppy's feeding time should be during training. Put whatever portion of food you've determined for your dog in a pouch and when its time to eat its time to train. It's much easier to train them when they're hungry as opposed to feeding them and then using treats for training.
Thank you, Joe! We recommend waiting with using the e-collar until 5 months of age. Our step-by-step e-collar program "Unleashed!" on diyk9.com shows exactly how to e-collar train your puppy, and which e-collar and accessories to get.
My Vet said that my 5 year old Working Line was most likely poisoned, we think it was our neighbor but can't prove it. My God, what is wrong with people? Why, because he barked when he sensed danger? Jet was such a joy and was like a Son to us. Forgive them Father, they no not what they do.

Dont ever teach your dog «paw». Why would you want your dog pawing someone for treats or praise?
@@MagnusFXT I think more conventionally paw is essentially shake/give me your paw.
