- If this video seems derivative of any other RUclipsrs... it is! I wanted to make a series that took elements from Gamester81 (NEStalgiaholic), HappyConsoleGamer, and AVGN's episodes about NIntendo Power and Video Game Magazines... and create an issue-by-issue hybrid of passion, wit, and nostalgia for Nintendo's awesome magazine: Nintendo Power. I hope I was able to do it.
These three guys have done quite a bit toward my appreciation of RUclips and their videos about Nintendo Power and other game magazines have been amazing. If you haven't watched them already... you must! Here are some links to their videos:
HappyConsoleGamer "Video Game Magazines" • VIDEO GAME MAGAZINES -...
AVGN "Nintendo Power - Angry Video Game Nerd - Cinemassacre.com" • Nintendo Power - Angry...
Gamester81 NEStalgiaholic "'88 Nintendo Power Magazine Issue #1 Review" • '88 Nintendo Power Mag...
I hope you all enjoy (and understand) what I'm trying to do. Thanks.

Awesome, loved the "a Christmas story" part with so much detail to make it exactly like the movie
Hey NESComplex just discovered your videos and I'm impressed.. you're entertaining, funny and talented, keep up the great work man! Thanks for the vids.
When's the last time you flipped through an old issue? They are so great and in my opinion bring back the nostalgia like nothing else can. Bummer your parents threw them out. My mom did, too. I've bought them all back and then some. I have most of them now.
I just stumbled upon your channel, great stuff. I've been looking for a good Nintendo channel on here. Keep up the great work, and bringing back the great memrories of simpler and far more fun time of gaming.
Thank you! I was terribly afraid it would come across as too derivative of his work. I've tried to give AVGN as much credit as I can. His work is the "father" of the concept... I just wanted more. No one else had made anything quite like it so I thought I'd try my hand at it!
Thank you so much! Those are very kind compliments. I'll keep trying to make videos you'll enjoy!... but man is it time consuming!
Thank you! I have more in the works.
For sure! Getting Nintendo Power in the mail was the highlight of each month. I wish I still looked forward to it that same way. Thanks for watching, bro.
I know what you mean. I actually reshot and rerecorded much of the episode as I'm trying to get a feel for how to balance passion, humor, and nostalgia. I imagine I'll get better at it. Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you!
Just found your channel. Fantastic show here! So this episode reminds me that my elementary school had this issue, and only this issue. I must have checked it out and read every page a dozen times.
Thanks for the video its great :) I had a ton of fun watching it keep up the great work
Yep. You caught me! I made an editing mistake. I filmed myself writing it out from two angles, but didn't pay much attention to how much I had written when I edited. Good eye!
"DOUBLE DRAGON, GAUNTLET, AND CONTRA! WHAT AN ISSUE!...andwheeloffortuneandjeopardy...WHAT AN ISSUE!" Lol. Good job man, lookin forward to new episodes, very professional
Thank you.
Great video! I loved the reference to A Christmas Story haha, one of my favorite movies by far. Nice job again!
Thanks. Wacky ads? sounds interesting. I'll have to look into it.
Thanks for watching. :)
Gamster81 turned my on to your channel, and I have to say I'm really glad he did. You clearly have a natural ability keep it very interesting while also being informative and witty at the same time. Many others strive to do the same but are simply unable to do this. As soon as I viewed your fist video I was hooked. Keep up the good work bro. Although we need more videos, so keep them coming!
Thanks.
I don't think anyone else has commented on that, but I think that's one of my favorite parts. I know I shouldn't laugh at my own jokes, but when I look to the side 6:33 I can't help but smile
That awkwardness is a big reason I wanted to do the series. It sort of went along with the awkwardness of being a kid or teenager during those years.
I didn't play Star tropics until last year. It's a fun game, but I agree with your comment about it being frustrating. I still haven't finished it.
Dear Santa, I want more Nintendo Power Time Machine for Christmas. That is all.
thanks.
Yes! I called them sometimes as a kid because I couldn't beat Link's Awakening on the gameboy. They were very polite and usually really had the answers and knowledge. You know, they were the PROS.
Ninja Baseball Batman... I forgot about that! Good call!
Thanks RetroRObbie. I put a lot of thought and time into this one. I wanted it to be just right!
Your channel is amazing, NESComplex. I grew up in the NES/SNES era and love looking back at how great these consoles and their respective games really were. I think something is lost with Call of Duty and the like. Games back then didn't need catchy soundtracks, witty voiceovers, or 10,000 frames per second. They needed good game play and, most importantly, story. And Nintendo Power? Huge part of my growing up. Sad to see it go, but your tribute is really nicely done.
WOW! I don't know about that. I'm such a huge fan of all those guys, so you've just given me the biggest compliment ever. I would be satisfied if I had an ounce of their talent. Thank you so much! I'll be on All Gen Gamers episode 103 if you want to check it out.
Love the Christmas Story reference. Your videos are all really solid dude
I turned five the same month NP came out, but it wasn't till I was 11 that got a Super NES and I've been hooked on Nintendo ever since.
(raises fist in air in memory of Nintendo Power)
Thanks :)
Great videos man! Right on par with the videos from gamester81 and the like.
My goodness, I'm astonished that a high stature of gaming like Cliff Blezinski was actually in Nintendo Power lol Anyways, I'm impressed by how well thought out this review was! I used to watch Gamester81's reviews for these, but I think yours is a bit better in terms of presentation style.
Anyways, its sad to see that print isn't the same as it used to be in the old days. Nintendo Power had to actually switch to a different manufacturer because of low sales in recent years.
I’m only missing the first issue of Fun Club News and have the first 32 issues of Nintendo Power which is when I left for college and fell out of gaming for a few years. Glad I found your channel Great stuff so far!
That is the highest compliment. Thanks a lot. I mean it.
Great video man, very entertaining and some nice editing work as well, look forward to seeing more of these.
Thanks, bro. I'm glad you liked it.
This is seriously one of the best channels on RUclips
2:35 I can definitely see the teacher in you during that little segment XD Haha, funny stuff, man.
Hey now, don't be hatin' on Pat Sajak and Alex Trebek's Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!!! Some of my favorite NES games...not really, haha.
Another excellent episode, and my goodness, that ending was classic! LOL, I was hoping you would make the call, because if you didn't, I had my phone in hand ready to call at the end XD
Love this!! Nice work. I've been digging through the Nintendo Power archives for my podcast, Power Time. You might dig it. Keep putting out awesome videos!
Thanks SlashersElite.
I feel bad for anyone that watches this video… and the “Christmas Story” gag flew over their head.
They will never appreciate it as much as those of us who did catch the reference.
getting better and better!!! great video.....
I got my NES on xmas 1987. This is so nostalgic! Gamer ever since.
I wish I could just instantly have the next 50 episodes created.
I thought he did, but wasn't sure.
This is your best video! Powerline in Brazil was called the HOTLINE... Sounds weird thinking about it now. hahaha
Thank you?
Got this in the mail back in the day and still have it today!! This magazine was a must as a kid!!
This kind of stuff makes me wish I was born about 15 years earlier... I wish I would've been there to experience this stuff when it was new.
I think it's cool the first official issue you got was Star Tropics. That game is one of my favorites, but it is pretty frustrating at times. I think I'm going to really enjoy this series.
Dude, don't sell your era short. Plenty of kids today missed that. They'll wish they had been born when you were. These poor kids today barely know about cartridges. Soon disks will be a relic. Your era is just as awesome and full of nostalgia!
Hahaha. I must say... I really enjoyed that video. I'm very glad I subscribed! Keep it up!
Yay! Nostalgia FTW
This is freakin sweet xD
I was never able to buy the nintendo power issues but now thanks to u. I can still enjoy them :D
The Christmas Story reference was amazing!
No. Some people have told me that it doesn't work at all.
Thank you! Hopefully future episodes will take you down that same lane again. :)
I wonder where they got the mail box letters and top scores for issue #1? Was there ads that a Nintendo Power magazine is going to be released, please send in your high scores and we might use it in the #1 issue of NP?
I actually didn't call, but it was fun doing the voices. lol.
Awesome video A+++ it was hilarious especially the Christmas Story part lol! Btw I was wondering if you know about the Nintendo Power Issue #1 ever coming in plastic wrap? I got one around 10 years ago and it came sealed in plastic...not sure if it matters or not but I refuse to open it!
Excellent! Great review!
I will, but these take a long time to put together. It'll be a little while.
Great video brings back good for me memories.
Oh memory lane. Getting frustrated with Contra only to find Nintendo Power had a solution. Thank you and please keep posting more videos.
Your passion about games is great, it's the only reason I really like your games. I think more people should have Parts where I loved your videos.
Yes... I don't think the rift between Nintendo and Atari was fully formed yet. But it was close. Leave it to The Atari7800Junkie to catch the Tengen Tension. :)
how could i forget the contra code that give you 30 lives played that game so much as a kid
Chris' channel is so underrated
Thank you! Spread the love.
@@NESComplex are you focused more on your content or are you preoccupied with pgs? I enjoy you there as well.
I’m gonna focus on my content mostly. It’s difficult to get together with the boys regularly. But I’ll be in there when I can :-)
Stoked your stuff is so in depth
Gamester81 sent me. I'm glad he did, great work man!
that was really funny, love the nod to Christmas story
It looks like a ton of fun, but I do worry about how far behind the cutting edge of gaming technology that Nintendo appears to be. That said, I have bought every Nintendo system and I don;t plan on missing this one.
Damn you! Now you're making me want to go back and buy up all my old magazines! Unfortunately, they were all thrown out by my parents. :(
Great episode.
I really like the fact that you give it your all. I consider your travel through time the same as mine. We are almost the same age and I consider that I really would be awesome on youtube as a video maker but I really don't have the means to issue. I love your videos because it makes me remember my old days. I am 28 years old and I grew up in the eighties and I love baseball games. RBI was bad ass. I wish I was this old again.
LoL.....The Power Line call at the end killed me! Good job with the story on the mag`s birth, was really interesting...
Thank THank THAnk THANk THANK you! lol
Come to think of it... powerunlimited(dutch) and nintendo power where the only books i cared about back in the day,and i see that the powerline stil works!! good to know i might need some tips!!
Thank you so much for the compliment and for watching. I appreciate it.
Ah how we used to beg our parents for things. lol. My kids do the same to me. Now that I'm a parent I know why my parents said "no" sometimes.
Excellent video man. I can't wait to watch episode 2
loved the Christmas Story reference !! 😄
At the very, very end... I "call" the powerline.
0:44 Oh my god, the TMNT toys... 1:40 I like Mario Bros 2. So many now classic Mario characters came from it, even if it wasn't a "Mario" game originally. 2:26 Oh man, that map was so nice. 2:36 Hahaha. Awesome! 3:10 Ovaltine?... I mean, Powerline? :P 3:38 Who doesn't need Batman? :P 4:30 Oh man... Give me my Konami code anyday. o_O 6:00 Wow, that's awesome. 7:14 Haha. Not an excuse indeed. :P Nice official first episode. ;)
Come to think of it, your'e right. To quote NCS, "Now is never as awesome as the past." meaning that now isn't as awesome now as it will be when it's the past. XD
another great video, excellent work
Star Tropics was my first issue too!
OMG MEMORIES! I had every single issue you see here! HOLY CRAP THAT LINE STILL WORKS!!! LOL
I know. The old man was... me (from the future?)
Those issue #1's are worth a lot of money now
nice Christmas story spin lol nice video!
I never called that number either but the Game Genie helped me.
OMG...amazing episode...brilliant to use The Christmas Story...LOL. Freaking amazing. Keep up the episodes
Haha. A crummy commercial lol. My fav. Christmas movie! What a great episode! Now I can't put my arms down!
I like it. it reminds me of something like the movie "a Christmas story".
Did you call it? I never really called it... I called my friends. One of them usually knew the answer.
classified information was always the first spot id flip to also. the good ol days
This video is GREAT! :D Can't wait for the next one!
Nintendo was the best thing that happened in the 80's. It was an awesome time...a much simpler time.
