Thanks for the tips and validation. I have seen the sawfly larvae and maggots in my currants and gooseberries this year in Portland. They hit my plants hard. I didn't get a single gooseberry from two different plants and only got a handful of maggoty currants from three bushes. Makes me wanna not grow them anymore and focus on other berries. But I will try the methods in here next year and see what results I get.
Matthew how'd they do the last couple years since you posted this? I'm nervous after this video, just planted my first currants and gooseberries last month!
Not in your region, and growing Ribes is highly regulated in my state, but this video helped me think outside the box about other insects that have appeared and decreased/devasted harvests of other edibles over the years. Thanks so much for stirring my brain!
As an alternative for the shrub layer, instead of currants, what about northern spicebush, Lindera benzoin? It does well in part shade, and can be used as an alterative for allspice and for teas. Also a native plant (in my area).
If you let the berries sit in salt water, all of the maggots leave the berry and float on top of the water. I think that they are not fond of salt water. I just bought a rooted cuttings of black and red currants. Will be planting them in the spring. Hopefully they will take off.
I heard that adding vinegar to water and soaking berries makes the maggots come out. going to try this since i wash most fruits and veggies this way already
I have read about spraying kaolin clay on immature fruits to prevent the gooseberry fruit worm. I am going to try this this year. Out of 8 mature gooseberries, I got zero fruits last year.
Loved this video!!. I am in New Zealand and I am just starting on planting out a food forest in my small urban garden. I have planted several types of currants and will be interesting to see what bugs attack them here where I live. Fingers crossed the first year I don't have too many problems.
Thank you so much for sharing. I don't used any pesticides too. I found out that problem too (my apple, raspberries blackberries and figs) I haven't seen any problem of red currant and black currant. Greetings from Belgium
So my currents loosing leaves and turning brown. One if the plants rotted. Is it normal for them to loose leaves that for the winter? I grew up eating them and loved them and what to grow them
Love your videos. I have a quarter acre lot in Massachusetts that I just started growing as a food forest/garden. Your currant videos made me excited to plant a few varieties. Unfortunately, I when I went to my local nursery to see if they had any, they said they were banned in many places in Massachusetts, including my town. Seems they are an alternate host for a disease that has decimated the White Oak, native here. Can you suggest some other understory plants that could fill the niche currants occupy?
My first year with gooseberries and I’ve got what I think must be Gooseberry flies, :( bummer. Thanks for letting me know how to still use the berries!
for the blister aphid or any aphid always look for ants. otherwise, you are fighting a battle incorrectly. You gotta give ants something to eat all season to focus their attention on or you can put things that are ant annoying. if you don't do that ants will farm you. as for the maggots i always have ducks go through my fruit areas. they don't go too nuts they just stir things up enough.
i always think that ducks and chickens are wonderful. If you are a permaculture person though. runner ducks well trained are the nuke when everything goes wrong.
Only in certain states. It is legal to grow them on the west coast, or at least in the PNW. There are even native currant plants that grow here like Red Flowering Currant.
How did your netting experiment go for your currants?
great tips thank you.
so far only had blistering on my young red currant, now I know what to do with it.
Very helpful. Thank you. I’m experiencing problems for the first time in five years with my currants.
Solid video. Thank you! Planting my first currants this season.

Thank you for all the info.

Thank you for the great info. I have year old plants of red and black currents that are growing fast. My Picwell gooseberries are producing very well.
What about the use of nematodes that eat the larvae of the fruit fly
Very interesting and helpful information. Thanks 😊
Very educational, thanks for sharing

When I read about this as a monitoring strategy, l wondered how much salt the berries absorb during the process. Do you notice any impact on taste?

@@sandybillings5751 Do you eat the berries after the maggots come out???
Last year i planted black and red currants. This year i finally gave up trying to combat aphids. Im thinking of digging them up.
The leaves were all blistered

Go food forests!!! Even way over in new Zealand... Woohoo!
Love your thoughts on insecticide - so important! My plant develops flowers, but no berries! I'd love to hear your thoughts!
I love the way you say 'bushs' so casually lol!
The information is very useful.

Enjoyed your video, thanks for the info.
Goumi liqueur sounds really good. I just harvested the last of my first year of goumis.
Also sorry that you lost your video. That's rough. 😭
Awesome video, thank you
Thank you so much, very helpful. I was looking for currant diseases and solutions.
Ooo we don't have those fruit flies in New Zealand from what I can see.
Did the mosquitoe netting help?
I Like 👍 you’re video but didn’t hit Like 👍 it’s at 665 and I just can’t make it that number… Bless you all, thanks for the video ❤🎉😊
Uh, I'm squimish hahaha. Just got some seeds and trying to figure out some solutions. Thanks so much for showing me what could happen.

A solar dehydrator, how do you get it to work in Oregon? 😂😂 I’m from Oregon too 😊
Would growing rosemary next to them have an affect on pollinators?
Please do remake that video- I’m very interested in the topic

I would recommend honeyberries. The newer varieties taste great.
Totally agree just be careful with the netting material I've been learning
You can use Tulle as safe netting. (Refer RUclips Robbie and Gary Gardening)

Great video. Can I take cuttings now? I want to start some for my chicken yard.
Anyone have any experience using the JADAM pest repellent on these? Using Gingko leaves/nuts
I can't find any currant plants for sale. Where can I buy a live plant?
Etsy
Great video, but boy, that's a lot of commercials
Are birds a problem?

how are you able to grow currants in the US its illegal to grow them here
Only in certain states. It is legal to grow them on the west coast, or at least in the PNW. There are even native currant plants that grow here like Red Flowering Currant.
Update?
16 commercials. Wow
The cichens will eat all the fruits! Don't grow them in the same yard! You must use protection net!
get to the point
Jostaberries get graped by the sawfly larvae. They aren’t worth growing. I am about to remove mine after 5-6 years later today. Rip 🪦
