Charlie this video review was exactly what I needed. I'm in the process of building an MJT strat and have been looking for reviews of single coils that cater to drop tunings. I have to admit I love the Fat 60's and was surprised at how well they sounded when pushing the gain. Really informative! Also, great shirt!!!
I can dig it. Fat 60s in the bridge is where it's at for that Guitar. The bare knuckle sound great in mid/ neck. Keep fot 60s in bridge cos it's Fattt and zingy.
I got a Mod Shop Strat last year. I ordered it with a hardtail bridge, the American Original 60s neck' and the True Vintage '59 pickups, which are advertised at 5.9k, but are actually 5.1; 5.3; and 5.8k and they are just way too weak for me. I think I am going to get a set of the BK True Grit p'ups for it. I have also started to like Ernie Ball Mighty Slinky strings on my Fenders lately. They are 8.5 - 40 gauge. I think the added output of the True Grit would work well with the thinner strings.
I am looking for reviews of the fat 60's.. they seem to work very well on distortion. what do you think about them compared to the fat 50's /texas specials ? I didn't understand what you didn't like on them (clean /distortion)... could you please explain a bit more ?
Absolutely dude! So the 60s have a bit more of a mid-range poke than the 50s which makes them a bit more suited to anything modern high/highish gain, but for clean tones I personally much prefer the airy top end you get with the increased treble and more scooped mids on the 50s set. I actually ended up keeping the 60s in the neck and middle position and have put a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge which works much better for me. I've not spent a lot of time with the texas specials so wouldn't really be able to comment yet unfortunately! Hope this helps
@@charliecoe1999 thank you for the answer and for this very interesting video, your guitar sounds amazing. I will replace the noiseless pickups with fat 60s on my second hand deluxe stratocaster.
@@charliecoe1999 I mean, the JB isn't exactly a 50s style pickup either. I'm looking at the pure vintage 59 set now, but wanted to hear the fat 60s, not much of those on youtube for some reason. edit: I see what you mean about the mids, but if you're running a Klone on a mid-rangey amp that's going to happen. I didn't watch closely enough to see what you're actually using, though.
Put the 60's back in.... imo. Put in a better cap and pots and try different strings. I use Curt Mangans with my 60 strat pickups and they are an amazing combination. If you want to sound like a Humbucker buy a humbucker guitar first. IMO !!! But I have spent a fortune learning these things.
The point of the video is how well do entry-level bare knuckles compete with custom shop pickups/sound in a custom shop guitar. Sorry if it wasn't to your taste

Fat 60's on the Bridge and Old Guard on the Neck are the winners for me
This, and lower the height of the Old Guard on the bass strings side a bit

The Old Guard Pickups seem to give greater treble and clarity. They do actually sound better for what you are playing.
Yes, superior note separation.
Are these noiseless? I'm not hearing any 60 cycle hum that you would get from true single coil pickups.
Good video. Would have almost just preferred the pick ups with no effects to get the actual tone. 🤷🏻♂️
Comparing a set of high end fat 60 Vs entry level bare knuckle...probs not the most fair comparison , boot camp Vs Tex mex would be closer
Prefer the Fat 60s honestly
Yeah Bare Knuckles are very superior in terms of note definition but all their pickups seem to have somewhat of a "dry" tonal character.
Man this is a very post rock pedalboard ! 💪
Probably bk true grit is the best for your style in my opinion.
That sounded much better than my fat 60's. Replaced mine cause I didn't like them much.
You have to test clean straight into the amp.
Both sounded awesome
Is that standard tuning @ 3:34? is that an original song? sound awesome!
Believe I played that in drop D, though the chords are from the bridge section of Three Cheers by my band Homeblood, which is in drop B :)
@@charliecoe1999 thx for the reply. good stuff!
Man, you sound great....love your playing style! Both pickup sets sound great to my ears. Thanks for sharing :)

Do any of these pickups have noise?
Great stuff

You don't really need a custom shop guitar for that. One decent Squier would suffice.

Why would he need a Squier if he has a decent custom shop in reach to demo on?
throw the squier down the river
The O.G knuckle sounded a bit thin IMHO.
Entry level
Not much difference. Maybe more treble.
Stop!!!
Hammer time!
