It will be a while before big scup come deeper into the sound to my waters, but nice to see them close by! My favorite early season porgy bait are cut up sticks of Berkeley gulp bodies that lost their tails from fluking last year 👍🏻
Welcome back. Man I hate to see anyone cut frozen chum drawing the knife towards yourself. I know firsthand that can be bad. Remember "don't get bloody , cut towards your buddy ". As usual a great video. Have fun John
Love the motor John! Way to go with the Yami. Good Luck with it! I always enjoy watching your early spring porgie trips...they get me fired up! Im located just across the sound in CT. It's on!!
Goldsmiths is a class act! I left them a blank check last year to cover some services. They gave it back to me and said they got the warranty to cover it
Best motor in my opinion! Same one I have. I had a boat a lot like yours last year but sadly it started to rot like yours. Currently I'm working my tail off to get a 5oyr old whaler restored! Thanks for keeping me connected to what I love!
Great video, love the bait fishing bit at the start, so cool to see the groundbait/chum approach be used successfully. Cannot wait for you to start catching the stripers from the shore on the surface🥳👏🏻
Fished Near the Port of Egypt May 17Th it was 39 nothing but Searobins . loved it anyway because we got rigs from wego and i picked up another shirt ....
Did you have issue(s) with the e-tech? I’ve got an old 16’ Starcraft like your old tin with an old Evinrude two-stroke (like your old old motor) and have been wanting to upgrade. Thought about the e-techs but now wondering if should go with something different?
Looking for a boat ramp, one that you do not have to be a resident of Suffolk county to use or one that doesn’t charge a whole lot to launch from. I am a resident of NY but not on LI. Any suggestions?
Hey John , Great video, quick question when casting the bucktail are you bouncing it on bottom back to the boat or a slow swim back off the bottom back to the boat ? thanks
@@JohnSkinnerFishing it’s just bad form John….You’re an industry icon….a giant among peers…you can’t do socks with sandals…..would Sweeney do socks with sandals???
I like the look of the rod for the porgy fishing but 6’2 I feel is a little small do they make those in a 6’6 or maybe a 7 or do you think that the 6’2 is the best size
Where are the bass grounds? I was down in fort Myers a couple weeks ago to help my brother. His house was destroyed from the hurricane. I miss the warm WX. I want to go back 😂
I got my new 1968 Duo on the water last week. I thought going from the starcraft to a glass boat was going to hinder my speed. Plus I added a foot. Now I'm 4mph faster. I had already started looking in the 70hp to 80 but I know I can get this season in at least. Good fish there
Nice to see some NE content. I asked about the rod and they were predicting the summer, great to see it in stock, its in the shipping cart. Are you planning to work on the new Skinner sea-robin rod soon?
Hey John- Is this the boat that you were looking to fix leaks/ rivets last season? If so what method/product did you use and is it working?- Just curious- Thanks
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Hey thanks and same here- I' partially filled my boat with water on the trailer and it turns out was mostly the seam where the hull at the stern meets the transom - Havn't decided marine grade sealant or JB weld
Hey John. What’s your boat deck made of? I have a boat with some spongy spots on the deck and planning to tackle that during the next off season. Weird to be talking about the next off season when this one is just getting going.
Hey John, love your channel. Question: Did you give an FSW officer permission to post a video of them boarding your boat and looking over your catch? I saw it yesterday on Snapchat, I believe.
you should try some of my spoons the Mystic Plugs, mystic drifters hand made spoons no china shit lol if you would like id be happy to send you a few. thanks Capt.Anthony Riccardo .be well and tight lines
Where are the stripers? Buoy number - rips and dips - hmmmmm. I think I know where you are. somewhere between 10 and 20 I think. The old stomping grounds.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing well, in the past you’ve used spiderwire and now you’re using seaguar braid (neither of which are “terrible”) but there are much better braids available on mass. I exclusively use braid and I’ve experimented with numerous different types of braid. I’d put seaguar and spiderwire at the bottom of the hierarchy of braid quality
Personally, I prefer suffix 832. It’s an 8 strand braid, which makes it stronger than power pro which is a 4 strand braid. It’s robust, it’s great for surf casting, and it’s durable and ties well. 10 pound test suffix 823 breaks at 29 pounds of pull.
My main braid is Berkley X9. I'll still use Spiderwire Stealth in very rocky areas with big bass. I've been using some Seaguar Smackdown. The specs make it sound thicker than it should be, but the performance and friendliness throwing really light stuff in Florida has been excellent.
No matter where you go fishing, it's always a pleasure to watch and a great source of information.
Thanks!

I've had success with small slow pitch jigs for porgies. Seems to help cull the small one out. And plus no bait 😂

That rod looks like the perfect tool for porgy/fluke/tog! Question for you, do you prefer swivels or knots (FG, etc..) for this type of fishing ?
That's what the rod's designed for. It feels great. I caught lots of tog on the final prototype last fall. I go through swivels for everything.
Lol.. we too just got back from Cape Coral and Pine island...A Week Too Soon! 😂 Lovely weather up here! 🌧
That's OK. I don't miss the mosquitoes. For some reason the last two days in SJC were the worst in the 3.5 winters I've spent down there.
ha did you see the new regs there trying to pass in nj for striped bass? 28 to 31 inches nothing over
Not just NJ.
Looking for a boat ramp, one that you do not have to be a resident of Suffolk county to use or one that doesn’t charge a whole lot to launch from. I am a resident of NY but not on LI. Any suggestions?
Are you seening the stripers on your sonar or just checking bottom depth when you glance at the sonar?
The stripers mark.
Hey John, is the thumb bar on the Maxel like the one on the accurist? Thank you.
Thumb bar but no flipping switch.
i heard the florida albie is following skiiner back to north long island
Welcome back Skinner! I'm curious, why you never keep striped bass??
I'd rather eat fluke, sea bass, porgies, blackfish...
Hey John ,
Great video, quick question when casting the bucktail are you bouncing it on bottom back to the boat or a slow swim back off the bottom back to the boat ?
thanks
Slow swimming near the bottom.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing excellent,

Great trip John. Early action on stripers all over the sound! Welcome home……..and lose the socks with the sandals.
I've never understood the issue with socks and sandals.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing it’s just bad form John….You’re an industry icon….a giant among peers…you can’t do socks with sandals…..would Sweeney do socks with sandals???
Sweeney? No way. But after Halkias sees this video he'll probably wear socks and sandals on his next fishing trip :-)

That 6-6.5' length is perfect for snapping a jig. Been having a ball with it lately.
hey John, does spring togging ever cross your mind and did you attempt any togging?
I really didn't have any interest for the one day I was out in April.
Where are the bass grounds? I was down in fort Myers a couple weeks ago to help my brother. His house was destroyed from the hurricane. I miss the warm WX. I want to go back 😂
whenever youre back in swfl id be happy to take you and sweeny out for some big red grouper on the slow pitch.
nice work getting out early . how fast does that 70 push your boat and how big is your boat i need to repower also soon i have a aluminum 19 ft
Looks like a little over 30mph. It's a deep and wide Grumman 5-meter boat, so 16'4''.
Question, what depth would you recommend as a good starting point in Peconic bay for the porgies? We are trailering our boat from upstate!
30-50'
Welcome home John! Is there a tide stage that's best for doing this type of porgy fishing?
It's spot-specific, but I like incoming. This was outgoing.
I got my new 1968 Duo on the water last week. I thought going from the starcraft to a glass boat was going to hinder my speed. Plus I added a foot. Now I'm 4mph faster. I had already started looking in the 70hp to 80 but I know I can get this season in at least. Good fish there
Awesome video john! What boat do you have there? Seems perfect !
1986 Grumman 5-meter boat.
Hi John love your videos. Just curious why don’t you ever harvest a striper?
I rather eat other fish.
Glad to see you back up in the island … by the way what camera are you using to record ?
GoPro 11.
Nice to see some NE content. I asked about the rod and they were predicting the summer, great to see it in stock, its in the shipping cart.
Are you planning to work on the new Skinner sea-robin rod soon?
Thanks for your support! You'll love the rod. We should get plenty of sea robin practice soon as fluke opens.

Porgies, maybe 30 inches. Bass 4-5 feet.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you
Is there any way to test the self inflating life jacket?
What kind of boat are you running John?
1986 grumman 5-meter boat.
John, is your trolling motor linked to the fishfinder?
Yes. It's a thing between the humminbird and minn kota called ipilot-link.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks. I had a Raymarine fishfinder installed only to discover later that it won't link with a Minn-Kota.............
Hey John. What’s your boat deck made of? I have a boat with some spongy spots on the deck and planning to tackle that during the next off season. Weird to be talking about the next off season when this one is just getting going.
I think it's wood.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing is it fiberglassed or just bare plywood
Do u keep the motor running during the drift
I did not, as I wasn't drifting into any kind of danger. Good question.
Hi, John Skinner do you still drive up or fly?
I'll be down in Marco's Island in June any place do you recommend?
Great video's 👍
Drive because too much stuff. I don't know enough about Marco.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I hear you with carrying a lot of stuff you must be exhausted by the time you get back.

Can you catch the porgy from shore this time of year or is it to early
Definitely yes.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks👍
maybe you should stay in Florida 2 weeks longer next year. i don't think you'll get outta the 50's all this week! BRRRRRRR!!
What happened with the Evinrude skinner
sold it
Hey John, love your channel. Question: Did you give an FSW officer permission to post a video of them boarding your boat and looking over your catch? I saw it yesterday on Snapchat, I believe.
I know nothing about that, but you're the second person to mention it. Please tell me where I can find it.
Nice porgy John! Do u ever find worms in porgy? I saw something that looked like a worm in one last year?
Never, sometimes in fluke, almost always in cod.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Tks!
I agree. I've never filleted a cod that didn't have worms. In freshwater I find yellow perch have a good amount of worms too.
have you heard about the new regulation that's going to be placed for striped bass 28-31 inches now instead of 28-38
Yes. Too many killed last year apparently.
Looking at the waves indirectly, I also want to get seasick.
Nice socks pops
Why did you get rid of the Etec?
Etec was a 40hp, this is 70.
Is a porgy the same as a grunt?
No. Scup is another name.
What size # line u use with spoon
30 main, 80 leader
Also catch a lot of stripebass and black fish please like share and subscribe 🤟
Câu cá được cá.
Is that north or south shore?
North
my 9inch are 5.8 oz my 8inch is 4.5 i have a 7 inch aprox 3.75oz and a 4inch peanut 2.5 oz
No, I’m not using 30 lb test on a $30 spoon. I will opt for Tsunami’s 7 oz spoon for depth and current. I do 50 lbs minimum.
I use a 5-ft 80# fluoro leader. The main line doesn't seem to be an issue, and 30# is very strong. I confirmed that pulling out of snags today.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing do you tie to a swivel or ant special connection knot 🪢?
@@JohnSkinnerFishing doesn’t Flouroleader make a difference? Mono has more stretch and I hear flouro weakens over time and hookups
To think about it. Flouro sinks and mono floats and we’re trying to avoid the scope. But you’re correct, lighter line keeps you in the zone longer.
I go through a high-quality stainless swivel. It also helps reduce line twist from the spinning spoon.
Goldsmith’s is the best
A great business for sure.
