Watching Metal Leo’s vid on dilapidated Reno NV, I googled what happened to Reno. Google replied “Reno residents moved to its suburbs buying online and shops banks and restaurants moved with them”. Reno is now a ghost of itself with a significant homeless population, how sad. I think that author is right cities are becoming obsolete.
In the area where I grew up, shopping centers popped up in the '50s. Photos of that time verify their popularity. In 1964, a building undergoing renovation in that city collapsed. Nothing was put in its place except a parking lot. All the business buildings were built by the owners of those businesses. But, after 1964, nothing else was built like they once were. Mr. Clarke was definitely correct.
I currently live in Reno and the downtown area is old and really outdated. The real action has moved away from there and is now at the Atlantis, Grand Sierra Resort, Nugget, and Pepper Mill. Which are all modern and completely different from old Reno. Huge influx of refugees from California (including me) that moved away from crime ridden So Cal. and Bay area because South Reno is actually a desirable place to raise a family. No smog, pollution, or gang shootings like in Oakland for example. Most every strip mall, apartment complex, and housing track has been built since 2000. Especially in South Reno where most everything is 15-20 years old and buildings have fresh graffiti free exteriors. I'm a big Leo fan, next time film by UNR and other places away from the downtown area to get a full picture of Reno.

It looks like paradise compared to most of the other cities Leo visits. Not much in the way of tagging or bums. Harrah's Reno got shut down at the start of the pandemic and never reopened. The hotel was build from the late 1960's to early 1980's (in parts) and is pretty limited in its design in spite of remodeling over the years. It was supposed to be torn down and replaced with a hotel + condos in 2023 but ran into red tape and got delayed, causing the project to go bankrupt when it lost funding. They will get it figured out sooner than later.
Yes it seems they have some civic pride and hope for a revival, maybe the city managers are trying to keep it presentable but of course it’s really getting too empty… let’s hope they can reinvent. Another CoVid casualty. The Reno area geography is beautiful and taxes lower than CA. They will move beyond their gambling past eventually.
This is the immediate downtown. It scheduled for eventual updates. The majority of the surrounding city is thriving. The Police still enforce the laws and keep the area safe and relatively clean compared to California. I have family that works in the Reno Police Department. They still patrol and enforce the laws. This is a concentrated video of the outdated old downtown hotels will eventually be demolished. Reno is still a nice City. Notice the lack of rows of homeless, drug addicts, and filth.
All fine and dandy, there still is the problem that made all those businesses go out after decades of being open . The country is done in a whole , and financially in the HOLE .

Unlike other places LEO goes, it’s only downtown that’s meh. It’s busy and thriving everywhere else. It’s better than San Francisco, where we used to live!
@@firestick4991 Everything is better than San Francisco, these days so it isn't saying much. Midtown is pretty lame with mostly closed shops, dying malls and no real city amenities.
Agreed, downtown area is old and run down, no one really visits there because here's the secret, everything has moved to center city and south Reno. The GSR, Atlantis, Nugget, and Pepper Mill are where people go now because its new and modern. I moved to Reno from Socal to get away from the crime and homelessness that plagues the uncollected trash filled streets of California, where I was born and saw deteriorate way worse than anything old downtown Reno has to offer. Hopefully this video will prevent more out of state refugees seeking residence here and further raising home prices. Fingers crossed
Reno was awesome, but everything worthwhile west of the Mississippi is just dying. One of the highlights of riding rickety Amtrack is Reno to and from Commiefornia
This is a direct result of two factors , the legalization of gambling in California on Native American land and the pandemic was the final nail in the coffin. Another great report Leo. Thanks for sharing !
Agreed, why bother to travel to downtown Reno when you can gamble in CA. Cov*d didn't help, it was a ghost city in Reno during that time until they opened the casinos again in the summer.
I LOVE Harrah's Lake Tahoe❕ They used to make the BEST Turkey Sandwich w/whole berry cranberry sauce. Yum. Now I'm craving one. LOL Did the Tahoe Harrah's close down too? Been awhile since I was down there. Used to ski there in the Winter and ride my motorcycle down there in the Summer. Ahhh... Those were the Good Ol' Days. When my Mom was still alive she would always tell me: "You can never go back." She was right. 😢
@@nobodynothing1469sad all these jobs gone but our government tells us we have a Good economy. Maybe Trump can make America great again time will tell. 😂
Well, the TRIBE part you got correct. 360,000 jobless claims last week? Don't forget, those coming off of unemployment are not included in these figures... and guess for how long. HOARDS, HOARDS, HOARDS. YOU are likely part of the "tribe"
Who would consider opening a business in downtown Reno? Those empty buildings will sit empty forever. The many Tribal Casinos that have opened in many if not most states never existed years ago. They have killed many of the Nevada casinos especially in Reno. Reno has been hurting for any years but now they are dead!
It's always interesting to look at a city like this, and consider "who runs this town". The people that run these declining cities must be on good salaries, live in nice houses, drive nice cars, probably don't have to worry about cost of living, The Mayor is Hillary Schieve (since 2014) - supposedly an Independent, but really a hyper liberal Democrat. Socialist policies, massive overspending of tax $$$. At one time replaced the US flag with the "Rainbow Flag". She's in until 2026, just enough time to completely wreck everything.....
The city just knocked down another major historic building for some nonsense. The town is run by a bunch of hillbillies and burning man bros with no real vision.
Yah, the last time I was there too. LOL In 1977 I was playing stupid blackjack and slots, lost $20 at all 10 casinos. That was near 10 days wages. I never did win a dime in north Nevada. Did OK in Vegas. I was last in Vegas in 2019. It's getting dumpy as well now with implosions and many others getting old. $300+ a night is nuts.
I’ve been here since 87 and I saw all of it when it was all open. I actually did all the tile in the bank you saw at Harahs I did a ton of tile work in there. I did all the granite at the cal Neva bar too. It used to be really fun back in the day. Spent a few times of my youth gambling at harahs. Things have been closed for years and years now. It’s weird
what this video doesnt show you, is how the other 99% of the city is doing, and its building like crazy. the old downtown core is not so great, but literally the rest of the city is expanding and thriving.
Reno is actually thriving and growing. However, that part of town (old Reno) is outdated and not as popular as it used to be. But the casinos still get jammed on the weekends. The rest of Reno is amazing and casinos like the Peppermill, the Atlantis, and GSR are in other areas of the city and they are very busy all the time. Reno is awesome (just not the old downtown area).
I was thinking about you last night wondering if the fires in California affected you. Ive been shocked the past few days, It's really unbelievable! Stay safe out there ❤
fires are end times events not science like the wars over sea in Europe and east side of the world there is more coming in the years ahead the whole west coast of the usa will eventually have little to no Forrest left
День назад+1
I think the fires might be a sign that the US unsustainable "car and suburb" lifestyle is coming to a close. The US over time will not be able to keep up the infrastructure for this (endless roads and other infra like pipes), it's too expensive, and actually inefficient too. You should look more into how Europe builds both PT and plans things in general, Europe plans so it's possible to live without a car, well at least in the cities and near them. And Europe plans with walkability and biking in mind also. And efficient city-to-city solutions, often trains.
The Eaton fire started across the street, just 1000' away from my Aunt's beautiful Tudor Mansion. She's lived in that house for almost 70 years. 5 (so far) are reported dead in Altadena. I havent been able to reach my Aunt (I'm in Washington State). Reports say that fire literally "exploded" in the middle of the night, giving residents almost zero warning to escape. I hope my Aunt was able to get out alive... 😢
The current American wallet can't afford $20 min tables. Reno and Carson City are now retiree towns. The Tesla battery plant is a great employer, but the gambling enterprises are done as you point out. The last time we were in Reno we stayed at the Silver Legacy. I crossed the street to McDonald's for a burger. It smelled of urine with heroin (or meth) addicts stuffed into the dining section. Never again. Thanks for the effort here, Leo.
Think of how many employees were needed at each casino - housekeeping, security, dealers, food service.... So many jobs lost each time one closes. Must be like a downward spiral.
The rest of the city is thriving. Just look at housing prices here. Tons of growth in all directions and industries, but the Old downtown core isnt great.
Just downtown. Everywhere else is thriving and busy. All the locals know it’s meh, downtown. 2020 did it in. But it was barely holding on before the mostly peaceful summer of 2020.
Reno is bigger than ever, but the 5 streets he walked downtown Have seen better days. Most of the city is growing like crazy with new building everywhere
You wouldn't happen to know a guy named Jim Dougherty would you? He was a Reno Cop. Probably retired by now. We met years ago in Hawaii. Tried to do the "long distance dating" thing but that got old quick (I live in Washington State).
Reno's downfall began with the California Indian Casinos, then Real Estate Speculation in late 90's and late 2010's. The worst thing about Reno now is the people who moved from California and decided they wanted it to be more like California Socially and Politically. That is who runs Reno now.
That's because the people of California are spreading Gavin newsom's tentacles in every other state and it's spreading like cancer like there's no tomorrow wait until he tries to become president of the United States then it really will be a third world nation on this planet so in other words here is my message do not I repeat do not vote for Gavin Newsom for president in 2028 if you do be prepared for the worst.
At least it doesn't seem to be as nasty as Oakland, etc. I'm just shocked though at how empty it is. It was a clean city. Like you, my last trip there was maybe 2000, but wow, just stunned.
@paulvon2378 "Only downtown" 😂😂- why else would anyone who doesn't live there go if there's no downtown? That WAS your attraction. Lol Does Reno not need tourist dollars anymore??
This is not giving the whole story. This is just part of the downtown area. The rest of Reno is thriving and same crowds of people. I’m sure they will start demolishing these dilapidated bldgs. and begin new construction. Reno is actually thriving
Wow thats crazy. It was a hopping place. My band played at the CAL NEVA CASINO new years eve 2009 to 2010. Its a mess everywhere. America is being destroyed on purpose. 😮
I lived in Reno in 2019 till 2020 and Reno was popping!! Anything and everything that you wanted legally and illegally you could find right where you're showing. That downtown was hustling and bustling like a little Times Square.....
Was fortunate to grow up 70s - 90s in Reno Tahoe Carson area. All businesses were open and thriving. Circus Circus had live acrobatics and trapeze, The Nugget had Bertha and Tina, MGM had a lion, and most casinos had a theater show. Ponderosa Ranch was even booming. Best hotels and casinos are Atlantis, Peppermill, and GSR.
I remember those acrobatic shows at Circus Circus. If I remember correctly, I think they did them every hour? Since you grew up there, do you know a guy named Jim Dougherty? He was a cop for the Reno Police Dept. He's my age (I'm 61). We met YEARS AGO on New Years Eve in Hawaii on Waikiki Beach. After getting home, I drove to Reno (from Washington State) to visit. We eventually lost contact. I often wonder how he's doing and what he's up to now. It's been so long, he probably doesn't even remember me...
I'm happy I'm old enough to have seen a lot of places back in the "old days" as a kid. We went around southern Cali (San Diego in particular) a few times on vacation, and back home in Chicago it was amazing to wander downtown during Christmas and see all the lights/people/shops. Sad that in only 50 years so many places look like ghost towns, so many people post about living in the areas you visit and they mention all the places they had great memories at, all gone now. Nowadays I live in a smallish town, and so far businesses are still up and running, but the number of "Mom & Pop" places I grew up seeing are almost all gone in the big cities. Be safe brother, stay out of L.A. until the smoke clears and here's hoping the fatalities stay low, it's enough of a disaster without people losing their lives along with their homes.
In the 90s I lived in the Bay area, went to Reno all the time. It's all so weird Leo. It is all gone. I hope one day it all comes back. Harras had the best biscuits and gravy but it's gone now! 🍪 Keep up the great vids bud!
I love an hour or so from Reno in the California mountains and go there to shop sometimes. True, the old downtown is beat, but there is a fair bit of economic activity elsewhere in the city.
Thx for covering reno metal leo❤️ had some fond memories there. Me and my late mom always did monthly gambling trips. Havent been back in 45 years😳 someday i will return!
@LeoMetalTraveler i could tell lots of stories but it would fillup this section😬 our main hotel we stayed was harrahs.. It closed right after the pandemic i think, then turned into an apt. Cheers😉
Dear Leo, I was thinking about you over the last 2 days as LA burned. Just like everything else you have so excellently documented, this was preventable. Never should have happened. Hope to speak to you one day.
@LeoMetalTraveler yes Sir it is. Large sections of LA will never return now. Of course, the high Santa Ana winds were not under anyone's control, but all the rest was. So many, including the governor and mayor, at the very least, should resign. My husband felt stronger that some of what occurred was criminal. Again, I can't thank you enough. I bet you haven't thought you were doing God's work, but I think you are. I will subscribe to you, but we have a child in college and funds are extremely tight. You do mean a lot to us.
Actually Harrahs was owned by Ceasars, when Eldorado bought Ceasars they sold the Reno Harrahs because they already own the 3 major casinos across the street from it. It didn't close due to lack of business. A development company bought and were in the process of turning it into apartments and retail. That company went bankrupt and now the project is stopped and it's an eyesore.
Reno in the 1960’s-totally rockin’! Open all night-sidewalks jammed with people, all having a great time. Harold’s Club and the Primadonnna were the funest places.😊
I came to Reno in the late 90s. Has seen its ups & downs. The main problem is that the rents are so outrageous most people cannot survive on casino wages. Now the filthy rich people coming to Reno with their politics, their snobby ideals & their new creations have led people to move away from Reno. I go to Reno about once a month. Shopping at grocery stores like Winco & Sprouts which is much cheaper than Whole Foods. I couldn't afford the rents if I stayed there. My apartment was $495 in 2013. Now its around $1500 month. But the apts all have fire places in each place on the second & first levels. Cats are allowed but no BBQs unless you BBQ on the street level. Unless the managers were pressured to change those rules. No sat discs allowed either. Has to be internally for cable & computer service.
Downtown Reno was suffering from crime and homelessness for a while which is probably what drove away the guests, and ultimately the casinos itself. Plus there's a ton of casinos in California now and Californians probably made up 75% of downtown Reno's revenue back then.
I'm shocked at the devastation we allowed our government to create with their crazy idea of how to treat a flu virous. We used to drive up to Tahoe / Reno from the Bay Area. Not to gamble although that happened, but just to hang out in a different neighborhood. The Truckee River was always cool to hang around. I'd never imagined Reno without pedestrians crowding the streets and traffic everywhere. One thing I've noticed in your walk through was the absence of tents. At least they got that right so far.
Reno is what Las Vegas, NV will become in the future. A microcosm of the macro. I drove through there summer 1991 and Reno was booming! Thanks for covering what has happened to Reno, Leo.
@@MichaelInTheDesert I think he’s being facetious… Las Vegas is thriving now, but for how long? I used to live there for a few years. So glad I moved. Larger cities have fallen…once the water is gone and people have no disposable money to give to the one armed bandits… Entertainment industry has kept it afloat for a while, but how long?
This is insane to see it in that current shape, I used to go to hot August nights every year, I have family in Carson City, Nevada. I never thought I would see that city look like that..
Thanks for showcasing this once famous city. Kinda sad to see it fading away, but I guess we can now have almost as much “fun” from the comfort of our own homes thanks to computer technology. Appreciate your videos that focus on the current transition much of country is going through.
Im from the bay area California, we used to party and suddenly get in the car and drive to reno and gamble and party more. Sleep in the car and drive back in the next morning. Great memories, sad to see this video
I didn't see needles tents & piles of human poop either. For being so deserted, downtown is still fairly clean. Especially compared to most "downtowns" in our nation now.
I live in Reno. I would go and walk downtown every weekend with my family. Our favorite spot was the movie theater at Riverside. Which just officially closed last month. Really sad shit. Downtown is dead, but to be honest, the city is bigger than ever before and it’s kind of booming to be honest.
I visited Reno in the early 90's. It seemed a bit sketchy even then but at least 5 or 6 thriving large casinos downtown. I could spend 4-5 hours playing blackjack at Fitzgeralds for $2 or $3 a hand. Coconut shrimp special at Cal-Nev was a bargain at around $5.99. Destiny's Child was playing in the theater. So sad that everything sucks now.
The reason people used to go to Reno, as opposed to Vegas, was that it was the cheaper alternative. Well with casino gambling, and sports betting available in virtually every state now, there isn't any reason to go to Reno anymore for the budget conscious gambler. They can just stay home, and gamble in their own state, or their own living room. It's the same thing that happened to Atlantic City, and it's what could happen to Vegas if they don't seriously diversify their economy. I went to Reno in the late 90's, and even then it was just a few casinos and a bajillion pawn shops. Can't say as I am terribly surprised to see what's become of it.
I lived in beautiful Reno 20 years ago, it was thriving and full of life. I am surprised. Glad you showed this, I was going to return and retire here..guess not. 😢
Leo, I watch your stuff all the time, enjoy the vids - Bonaza & Harrahs, Harolds, Nugget, Horseshoe have been closed for awhile now, Only Large casino's downtown - Silver Legacy/Circus-Circus/Eldorado are pretty much the only casinos downtown still (Virginia St) the J resort off the strip is open, used to be Sands - if you go further up Virgina towards MeadowWood Mall, you will run into Mid-Town, thats where the majority of the business have moved too - go past Mid-town you will run into Atlantis Casino, another large casino open, East of Downtown is the GSR Casino also large and still open, go to Sparks is The Nugget, not the little one that was downtown, most businesses have moved out of downtown and spread out to other areas in the Reno/Sparks area, guess its been awhile since you have been to the Reno area, many of the places you pointed out have been closed for at least a couple of years now - I moved back to Reno in 2012 😉 There is a shift away from casinos, more Tech/warehouses etc now.
It had slipped my mind that Harrah's closed in 2020. To me, that's the death knell for downtown. Hasn't been the same since Eddie's Fabulous 50's closed.
That is down town Reno. But at Plumb & North Virginia is where the money is. There are still large & ritzy casinos still open. Like Atlantis, the big Italian Casino I cannot remember the name. All the monied people have left the old downtown that you are showing in your video. There is a lot more to Reno than you are not showing Yet!
I am in Baltimore MD, and I do know what it's like to hear "oh, the city is having a Renaissance, a Revival, a Gentrification". Uh huh. A turd by any other name is still...
A closed casino is a win. Gambling is a net negative for any town. I remember people telling me about the magic of casinos. Instead I saw card dealers are the most miserable unhappy people, ugly guys blowing huge money on hookers, illiterate men on the street peddling hookers, druggies, drunks, and people with duct tape on their shoes blowing whatever money they had. Reno can be great if people care. You get tax advantages, the weather is better than Vegas, and you are near natural beauty like Tahoe.
reno is doing okay overall, not great. downtown though has been sliding for 25yrs. They are converting the Harrah's building into condos and a data center fwiw
Boy, it's was a great and vibrant downtown in the 70's with lots of casinos and restaurants. Sad to see it died this way. METAL LEO is spot on and the best on all these cities except for Downtown San Jose since it comes alive at nights, and the vacant storefronts are due to transit officials clearing some of the tenants out for staging for Bart construction. A lot of ground floor businesses are thriving downtown.
I lived in Reno from 1989-1998. I worked at the Comstock which was the building at 200 W. Second street. I started working at the Silver Legacy when it opened. Lots of good memories there.
Honestly it doesn't look any worse then when I lived there in the 1990s. Downtown Reno was dead and sketch even then. I'm not sure when it was ever vibrant. Maybe the 1970s. Yeah some of these small casinos were open then, but they didn't have much business. The Silver Legacy, the Circus Circus, and the Eldorado is where all the tourists go. The Cal Neva is where the locals go, though I'm not sure why. As long as those four stay open, Reno is fine. It looks like they are putting in a lot more housing Downtown. Hopefully that works out for them.
I remember in the seventies Reno was busy, I was 17 and snuck into the Nugget with my older brother who was 21. I eventually was escorted out by pretty nice guy ....back then it was mob run.
We walked over and around in that area way back in 2008. And even then we felt it was a dirty and sketchy area. Now it’s just in my opinion a giant void. Thanks for sharing.
Can anyone explain why housing and real estate prices have skyrocketed in Reno when a large portion of businesses and casinos have closed? Wouldn't you think if a city is in this bad shape that housing, rents, and cost of living would go down, not up?
I went to the Grand Sierra Resort from December 31st through January 4 for new year. A friend and I decided to walk around Circus Circus area and it was DEAD, nothing but homeless people and boarded up stores. It was sad. :(
Harrahs was the loosest and best casino in NV. It was closed due to a corrupt real estate deal and it was a huge mistake to close it. Original Harrahs btw

It was definitely a perfect storm for Reno
Probably Native legalization in Oregon added to it.
Agreed, why bother to travel to downtown Reno when you can gamble in CA. Cov*d didn't help, it was a ghost city in Reno during that time until they opened the casinos again in the summer.
Totally. I was just in Thunder Valley a few days ago, and it was poppin'!
Less tweakers to gamble away money through the night.
I was a security manager at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and remember 6 years ago going to Reno for training. It was still vibrant then. Wow 😢

I LOVE Harrah's Lake Tahoe❕
They used to make the BEST Turkey Sandwich w/whole berry cranberry sauce. Yum. Now I'm craving one. LOL
Did the Tahoe Harrah's close down too?

Well, the TRIBE part you got correct. 360,000 jobless claims last week? Don't forget, those coming off of unemployment are not included in these figures... and guess for how long. HOARDS, HOARDS, HOARDS. YOU are likely part of the "tribe"

The crowds moved to other places in Reno. Mostly Legends and The Summit. Or Virginia City.
Leo, you are the top reporter in the entire United States !
Who would consider opening a business in downtown Reno? Those empty buildings will sit empty forever. The many Tribal Casinos that have opened in many if not most states never existed years ago. They have killed many of the Nevada casinos especially in Reno. Reno has been hurting for any years but now they are dead!
Yes I agree Leo is the Best for reporting around the U.S. and for that IM GONE NOW!
@@craigjorgensen4637 Wonder what they're gonna do with all those empty buildings? Strip clubs? Liquor stores?
Noteworthy comment!
Not surprising at all

Question: can you give us examples of cities run by conservative Republicans that are astonishingly successful and prosperous?
Back in the 80's I went to Reno and toured Harrah's. They had spectacular automobile and firearms collections.
Thanks for showing Reno
I live here, but never knew that downtown is empty.

@ Even the old downtown is being worked on. Can’t believe all these commenters are convinced by this one video alone lol.
Thanks for letting us know, this video makes it look pretty bad.
This is true. I lived there. You can’t judge the Reno/Sparks area by the old downtown area.
I am sure the loss of the air races didnt help AT ALL!!
We moved here from San Francisco! It’s a big improvement! Go to Legends, the casinos away from downtown, or Virginia City. Carson and Tahoe!
Yeah, but downtown was the fun part of the city not the outskirts, it was the heart and soul of Reno

I was thinking about you last night wondering if the fires in California affected you. Ive been shocked the past few days, It's really unbelievable! Stay safe out there ❤
I was also thinking about Leo, I prefer him to cover the situation over there than the mainstream media.
Thanks for thinking of me, I’m far away from the fires. I’m safe. I’m in Reno Nevada, but my thoughts are with the people of LA in these hard moments
fires are end times events not science like the wars over sea in Europe and east side of the world there is more coming in the years ahead the whole west coast of the usa will eventually have little to no Forrest left
I'm glad i moved to the Philippines. Happy people, affordable for foreigners on a pension , social security. English speaking.
Those employees moved to California indian casinos.

Reno's downfall began with the California Indian Casinos, then Real Estate Speculation in late 90's and late 2010's. The worst thing about Reno now is the people who moved from California and decided they wanted it to be more like California Socially and Politically. That is who runs Reno now.
The same thing that happened to Memphis Tenn
That's because the people of California are spreading Gavin newsom's tentacles in every other state and it's spreading like cancer like there's no tomorrow wait until he tries to become president of the United States then it really will be a third world nation on this planet so in other words here is my message do not I repeat do not vote for Gavin Newsom for president in 2028 if you do be prepared for the worst.

I love an hour or so from Reno in the California mountains and go there to shop sometimes. True, the old downtown is beat, but there is a fair bit of economic activity elsewhere in the city.
With all the businesses closed I thought Reno would be a nice place to rent a home cheap, but boy was I wrong.
7:57 $350 weekly hotel rent is not that high by U$ inflated standards.

Dear Leo, I was thinking about you over the last 2 days as LA burned. Just like everything else you have so excellently documented, this was preventable. Never should have happened. Hope to speak to you one day.
It's a shame, isn't it?
@LeoMetalTraveler yes Sir it is. Large sections of LA will never return now. Of course, the high Santa Ana winds were not under anyone's control, but all the rest was. So many, including the governor and mayor, at the very least, should resign. My husband felt stronger that some of what occurred was criminal. Again, I can't thank you enough. I bet you haven't thought you were doing God's work, but I think you are. I will subscribe to you, but we have a child in college and funds are extremely tight. You do mean a lot to us.
The government did this just like Hawaii. It's called DEW. Direct energy weapons.
Maui=high priced coastal property.
Southern California=high priced coastal property.
Naaaaah, I'm sure that's just a coincidence.......
It’s just downtown. All the off strip casinos are busy. Legends, Virginia City, Tahoe are still busy.
They need to revitalize, refresh the downtown area, modernize it!
Reno is what Las Vegas, NV will become in the future. A microcosm of the macro.

Plus you had Tahoe and the mountains. That was appealing to a lot of people.
@OspreyFlyer Tahoe offered more than just gambling for tourists though. Other than gambling, Reno was never a tourist destination.
The big six of Las Vegas won’t let that happen for sure.

Bonaza & Harrahs, Harolds, Nugget, Horseshoe have been closed for awhile now, Only Large casino's downtown - Silver Legacy/Circus-Circus/Eldorado are pretty much the only casinos downtown still (Virginia St) the J resort off the strip is open, used to be Sands - if you go further up Virgina towards MeadowWood Mall, you will run into Mid-Town, thats where the majority of the business have moved too - go past Mid-town you will run into Atlantis Casino, another large casino open, East of Downtown is the GSR Casino also large and still open, go to Sparks is The Nugget, not the little one that was downtown, most businesses have moved out of downtown and spread out to other areas in the Reno/Sparks area, guess its been awhile since you have been to the Reno area, many of the places you pointed out have been closed for at least a couple of years now - I moved back to Reno in 2012 😉 There is a shift away from casinos, more Tech/warehouses etc now.

Wow unreal! That is sad to see, started going to Reno in the 1980s last time I was there was around 2017. Some good times there.
I moved to sparks in Aug of 99..Reno has gone way down hill for the downtown area...
Again, the place was lively for decades, maybe a century or so, then all of the sudden, dead. What happened?
It had slipped my mind that Harrah's closed in 2020. To me, that's the death knell for downtown.
Hasn't been the same since Eddie's Fabulous 50's closed.
That is down town Reno. But at Plumb & North Virginia is where the money is. There are still large & ritzy casinos still open. Like Atlantis, the big Italian Casino I cannot remember the name. I lived in Reno in the middle 70’s for 5 years, it was a thriving city with lots of entertainment at all the Hotel Casinos, sad to see this.
All those empty buildings, and yet there are homeless….disgusting
It was a different time back then.
The 90s it was starting to die, but nothing like this
I remember in the seventies Reno was busy, I was 17 and snuck into the Nugget with my older brother who was 21. I eventually was escorted out by pretty nice guy ....back then it was mob run.
We walked over and around in that area way back in 2008. And even then we felt it was a dirty and sketchy area. Now it’s just in my opinion a giant void. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks…very valuable insights!

Can anyone explain why housing and real estate prices have skyrocketed in Reno when a large portion of businesses and casinos have closed? Wouldn't you think if a city is in this bad shape that housing, rents, and cost of living would go down, not up?
