Not gonna lie, my brother and I did. But as a joke about our latino family. We didn't think it was going to be the actual plot!!!! 🤣

The trailer makes this pretty obvious by centering around a clumsy, nerdish (yet conventionally pretty -- duh) female protagonist who seems to have been born into a culturally rich, relatively privileged, and large joint family and is trying to find her place and meaning in her family and community, which she obviously does, by living by her own rules, despite the familial pressures. (I haven't watched the movie and I don't plan to; I'm simply speculating). Disney uses hackneyed tropes because it caters to the masses who like to think they're intelligent, and this includes an audience of color increasingly from the global south, the audience that the American entertainment corporation is currently milking for its profits.

As a Colombian myself, I feel so proud to see a movie made about my culture. Sadly, most Colombian directors only make movies and TV series focused on the sad and shameful part of our history. Not on our beautiful and family oriented culture. Can't wait to see it!!

I didn't see us represented in the movie "in the heights" when they were mentioning countries (it's ok, they were so many countries to go over), and over the years, movies and tv shows about Colombians have always been about gangs and drugs. I'm so excited to see this, and It doesn't even matter that It's for kids. Seeing my country represented with so many colors and this beautiful animation is making me goofy smile.
I didn't see my country (Brazil) in ITH too but I felt that my culture was being somewhat represented, even if I don't speak Spanish ❤️but I feel exactly the same way as you and I'm happy you Colombians get to have a Disney princess all for yourself! 1. She has a gift that was hidden, because of something
2. She is the glue of the family figuratively or literary as in she gives them power, so maybe something happens and now the other family members must learn to be normal like human and work together.

Damn, Disney is having a HUGE year w cultural representation in their movies. First, Raya and the Last Dragon with the Southeast Asian cultures, and now Encanto w Colombia! As someone from Southeast Asian descent, Raya made me so proud to be represented on screen, and the movie was amazing. I hope this movie is just as good and gives Colombians the recognition they deserve.

@@why-oh-wai Hi, great point. However, I would like to add that Disney released a total of 6 major movies last year (not including Marvel). These movies were Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto, Jungle Cruise, Cruella, and Ron’s gone wrong. Two of these movies are based off of 2 different cultures that don’t really get a lot of screen time. The fact that 1/3 of the movies that Disney released was based off of minorities at all was a huge deal, and they did such a good job doing it. Hopefully this brings some clarification to you since you completely ignored the point I was trying to make and instead retorted with a red herring. Good day :)
Whether or not you predicted that this movie will be about love, family, and Mirabel being accepted with or without a gift, I don't think ANYONE pedicted that this movie will include generational trauma and songs that serve as free therapy. Kudos to Lin-Manuel Miranda for the amazing songs and everyone involved in the production of this amazing film 👏

What is special about this movie is that you expect (from the trailer and summary) that it is about a girl who learns she is special without a gift. While that’s part of it it is more about how those with gifts are actually just like everyone else-they get overwhelmed by the expectations people have of them due to their gifts and as Luisa puts it “sometimes I cry”. I didn’t expect that layer of the story but it is amazing!

Dash clearly didn't understand the point his mother was making in that scene. She wasn't referring to abilities. She was referring to the value of human life. Tbh i feel like the movie has a predictable setup to her eventually having a gift after all. A part of me is hoping they dont go with that route solely because I'd like to see how they would find ways for her to be special without it.
