Obviously the epilogue was filmed after Hexum's death. The editing and dubbed voice are a giveaway. The happy go lucky ending must have been hard for the cast knowing what the reality was.
OK, I admit it, the sound quality sucked. That said, I am very happy and thankful that I have been able to find Cover Up with Jon-Erik Hexum on RUclips. I wish the series was available on DVD but this was great. Thank you. Such a sad, sad tragedy.
I still can't get over the fact that Jon who was so full of life died so soon and in such a freakish manner. He had so much potential and even though I was barely born in 84, I got to catch the reruns of Cover Up in 91 when I lived in Pakistan & I still remember being shocked & sad at the end of this episode. Thanks for uploading these rare episodes. RIP JEH 🖤. I wonder what the production company did with the original master prints of the series.
I noticed in the intro that they didn't show the gun when the name of JEH appears, instead they showed a camera. I think they did this as a sign of respect because the similarities between that intro scene and JEH dead circumstances.
Very sad about John Hexum. The set dresser was there and said John awoke and was playing around with the gun and left one blank in it, then heard the gun go off and rushed back into the room and found him. He believes John was playing Russian roulette in a joking manner.

Actually, Edwin, the November 3️⃣, 1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣4️⃣, episode of COVER UP entitled “Golden Opportunity” originally aired 💨 on CBS about two ✌️ and a half weeks after the late Jon-Erik Hexum left 👈 us, but pretty close.
That scene of him loading the gun whilst sitting on the bed is eerie - I'm guessing that's where he fell asleep and later woke up then accidentally shot himself with that very gun, how terrible and sad R.I.P
Yes, eerie is the word I was looking for. I just can't stand to see all of he scenes where he's holding the gun. It's too eerie for me to look at! I do feel it's ironic that in the end, or so I've heard the Black actor helps with putting Jon-Erik in the ambulance & another Black man receives his heart! From what I know, JE's family didn't feel they wanted to meet the man who got his heart because it would be too painful. I can't imagine that!! That man is dead now but I didn't know JE & I WANT to know the people who received his organs!! That was a part of him that went on living!! Can you imagine putting your ear to the man's chest and being able to hear your son's heart?
@@TomSanderson100 Yes--a few minutes later, but not on that bed. My understanding is that he went off to another part of the set to rest and there shot himself.
Question regarding the last scene: Did they use an unused footage of him talking in the phone booth or was it a reused footage from an earlier episode? And did they dubbed his voice?
There was so much opportunities for a relationship between Dank and Mac to develop as the shop progressed. Tv shows in the 80s were very high in violence.
tom sanderson It looks like they tried to make the scene with as little extra coverage as possible -- if you notice, the two close-up shots of him with the gun don't show Hexum. I bet you anything they decided to retake the wide two-shot that goes from the bed to the door (note we don't see Hexum actually get back to the bed) for the gun and the accident happened then -- meaning what we see was probably the first, unsatisfactory take... but it was the only one they could use.
+tom sanderson I don't think he was being filmed when the accident occurred. From what I've read, it was while he was playing around with the prop during a break.
I wonder if it was the 2 close-ups (loading the gun/getting the gun from the bag) that we're going to be reshot, I'm not sure that it's Jon Erik's hands in those 2 scenes - maybe they were filmed after he died with someone else, they look clumsily edited in to the scene
I believe it is because had said thanks twice. Look at the scene when the guy walks in, the first time he says "I work alone thanks" we can hear it, whether is it dubbed or not is a different topic (When he says "Just a minute" doesn't sound like him). However, If your look at Jon right after the guy says "I'm going with you" there is a weird stare and he says "thanks" a second time to the guy but we can't hear it. It feels like Jon forgot his line and or he knew he had messed up by his reaction after he said thanks again. I believe that was the reason the scene had to be filmed again.
They were edited into the scene. When he place the gun in the bag, the gun should be pointing towards the door. However, when he retrives the gun, the gun is pointed towards the bed and if you look at the stand to the right, you should have seen the white cloth covering the stand. I believe the director said cut during the original take after he walked out with the guy as far as wide shots. I believe that since he messed up the wide shot, they never had the chance to do the close up shots. I have filmed before and the scene was poorly executed and understand why the director wanted to re-shoot it (during which Jon made a fatal decision). Btw, that is not the gun that he shot himself with. It was the gun used earlier during the photo shoot when we found out the photo shoot was at the wrong house. Also during the dinner scene after the first photo shoot of the episode, those same hands were shown when he was looking at the photos. That scene was also clumsy edited.
Tenía yo 13 años cuando veía misión secreta y viajeros lo ame con toda el alma lo lloré mucho cuando accidentalmente murió de mis actores favoritos que más amé
tom sanderson For one thing, producers of movies and TV shows never film scenes in the order in which they appear in the script. They film in the most practical and cost effective method they can. For example, grouping scenes according to daylight, backdrop, etc. Secondly, there's no doubt that the script was rewritten after the tragedy to allow the story to stand as naturally as possible without additional footage of Hexum. They put in the phone call at the end, for example.
Most of the time, the first scene and the last scene are the ones that are filmed last. The reason is that those are the easiest because for the most part the intro do not include the star or stars of the show/movie and the last scene is usually some boring celebration scene wrapping up the episode/movie. Btw, at the end when Mac was in a phone booth, that part came from the episode "Harper's Gate", the third episode of the sereis and first episode to air after he shot himself.
Golden Oppotunity was the episode with production delays when Jon Erik HEXUM shot himself with a prop gun.It appeared as though he workedvthrkugh virtually t h e entire episode and I didnt see any stunt doubles or absences near any portion of the episode but that bruusing on the right temple and right side of his face didn't entirely look made uo.In a few scenes he appear to br stumbling around and while it wouls seem unlikely could some of it be real bruising on tge right side orcwss footage edited in from prior episodes ? Could he have worked after shooting himself?I doubt if the insurance company would allow it even if he was up and walking around. This eoisode was a conundrum as I read that c was t h e episode he shot himself with the wadding of the blank and it w I uld bruise up the right temple .Am J misding something?
I don’t believe that he would have been able to get up and go back to work after shooting himself…he was extremely injured and was loaded into the ambulance so he wasn’t even conscious after the shot…I get what you are saying about the bruising on his face but I believe that he was basically brain dead as soon as he pulled that trigger! Such a waste…he checked every box and would have become a huge star! RIP Jon-Erik Hexum❤️😘

I was on set when he died. He was bored during down time and spun a 44 revolver with one blank in it. He lost at Russian Roulette. The blank fractured his skull and bone fragments traveled through his brain. It was a very unnecessary death. He crowned around one too many times.
They used re-recordings of all of the pop music throughout the show, because it's a lot cheaper for them to license the sheet music and remake it themselves than it is to license the recordings. My bet is that they were all recorded by the same professional group, mimicking the originals.

so much beauty and talent in one body becomes hybris...
There's no evidence that Jon-Erik was hubristic, especially compared to his peers in Hollywood. He seems to have been a very nice guy.
I meant it in the greek ancient way... in other words his beauty became a challenge to fate, a challenge to Gods... it meant to be a poetic line
