This is my very favourite version of this greatest of all books. There are a couple of incredibly talented voice performers that have gifted us with wonderful performances but Robert Inglis’s was the first one I heard, hence the one that all others are compared to, my ultimate version. I am fortunate that my mother read all of Tolkien’s legendarily when she was a kid. Introduced me to it with the lotr movies when I was a kid. Now, after 20 years of listening to her stories and having watched all films made, I am convinced that this is the best story ever written.

There is a a starwars audiobook about the assassin droid IG-88. It's a bit of fun but the blend of music ,sound effects and voice is so enjoyable . But yeah otherwise its a pain in the arse for sure.

Yes, but I'd highly recommend the prologue. It briefly covers the events of The Hobbit, the long history of Hobbits and the Shire, a quick recollection of the history of men, elves and dwarves, and other important histories relevant to the characters of LOTR.

Rob Inglis is the best voice actor - hands down. I have this whole set on cd's. I have read these books at least once a year since the 1970's. Once my vision started going, I found these - and now I can listen to the books once a month!

I know he is very popular, and I am happy that his version is there for those who prefer his version. I think what bothers me about almost every other person who voices this series is that they seem to have a hushed, breathy tone - especially for Elves, like they are trying to sound sexy or something. I don't know - it's hard to explain. I know each individual has their own preference of who reads & does voices. I was very impressed with Phil's skill & talent. I think I just have an unusual aversion to that kind of voice. Almost all the other voiceovers for these books seem to have that one distinction. For me, Rob Inglis' voice, a deep & strong one, is very appealing. And his attention to detail in how he voices every different character just blows my mind! Each Orc has a different voice, which really impresses me! Have a wonderful day!! 💜

Thank you to the person that told me it was Robert Inglis narrating this book. He does an excellent job with the narration and while his singing is 100% better than anything I could do, I believe he could have left that particular skill out.
Could have, but did not. And it's all the better for it. Folk songs like those aren't meant to be gatekept and only be sung by those who are skilled at it. It's how many oral histories are passed down through the ages of Middle Earth, just like in real life. Do you not see that? It's a logical parallel and one that makes the world Tolkien created feel much more real.

My only complaint is making contractions where there are none in the source. When Aragorn says "cannot" please don't read it as "can't." Tolkien did that apurpose.
The edition he is reading from was edited by Tolkien himself and included contractions in some places where later they returned to uncontracted form later. The stories are so old that there are many differences between some editions.
It's still light years ahead of the AI voiced audiobook I've seen on RUclips, as well as many others that are available here. The Robert Inglis version is the best audiobook I've heard for LotR.

Why do people keep claiming that the LOTR is a trilogy? Several times JRR has unequivocally stated that it is 6 (SIX) books plus appendies published in 3 (THREE) volumes.
V important to stay loyal it's original form! Otherwise things get lost. A fair few of those oafs in Hollywood would love nothing better than being "responsible" for its telling.

This is my very favourite version of this greatest of all books. There are a couple of incredibly talented voice performers that have gifted us with wonderful performances but Robert Inglis’s was the first one I heard, hence the one that all others are compared to, my ultimate version. Thank you for sharing this masterpiece
My favorite is Phil Dragash's. It uses music from the movie and the voices are amazing

@@jennifermcdonald5432 Have you heard the Andy Serkis versions?? they're amazing as he's a brilliant actor, and also as one of the actors in the films (he acts as Gollum) he captures some of the film magic in the other character's voices too :D (I'd read the books myself multiple times before the films even came out, but Serkis still captures a special kind of magic)

Dawg, this is Rob Inglis. Ain't no computer ever gonna do it like him. Absolute GOAT of narrating fantasy and regarded as the best to ever read Tolkien's epic.
I am fortunate that my mother read all of Tolkien’s legendarily when she was a kid. Introduced me to it with the lotr movies when I was a kid. Now, after 20 years of listening to her stories and having watched all films made, I am convinced that this is the best story ever written.

There is a a starwars audiobook about the assassin droid IG-88. It's a bit of fun but the blend of music ,sound effects and voice is so enjoyable .
But yeah otherwise its a pain in the arse for sure.

I bought all three audio books. I listen to them while falling asleep. This guy's voice conjures up a magical tale. This series and Dune series.
This narrator in particular is named Rob Inglis! (Andy Serkis is also fantastic, but Robert really brings the fantasy to life, but both have individual high points!)
Rob inglis was the best at narrating LOTR, i have this full audiobook on my computer by recorded books in 1990 and on physical cds as well.
I agree. This is the voice that belongs reading this story. My mom used to rent them from the public library for my brother and me.... on cassette..... we spent hours dubbing it onto blank tapes. Ah, those were the days.

Yes, but I'd highly recommend the prologue. It briefly covers the events of The Hobbit, the long history of Hobbits and the Shire, a quick recollection of the history of men, elves and dwarves, and other important histories relevant to the characters of LOTR.

Rob Inglis is the best voice actor - hands down. I have this whole set on cd's. I have read these books at least once a year since the 1970's. Once my vision started going, I found these - and now I can listen to the books once a month!
I have. But imo I think this is much better. There's something about PD's voice that annoys me sometimes. It's just a personal preference. Many ppl like his version.

@@garlicjrmade6409 Yes. I have listened to it before, but his voice didn't appeal to me. In some parts it was really good, but other places it irritated me. I know he is very popular, and I am happy that his version is there for those who prefer his version. I think what bothers me about almost every other person who voices this series is that they seem to have a hushed, breathy tone - especially for Elves, like they are trying to sound sexy or something. I don't know - it's hard to explain. I know each individual has their own preference of who reads & does voices. I was very impressed with Phil's skill & talent. I think I just have an unusual aversion to that kind of voice. Almost all the other voiceovers for these books seem to have that one distinction. For me, Rob Inglis' voice, a deep & strong one, is very appealing. And his attention to detail in how he voices every different character just blows my mind! Each Orc has a different voice, which really impresses me! Have a wonderful day!! 💜

Thank you to the person that told me it was Robert Inglis narrating this book. He does an excellent job with the narration and while his singing is 100% better than anything I could do, I believe he could have left that particular skill out.
Tolkien could have left it out

And it's all the better for it.
Folk songs like those aren't meant to be gatekept and only be sung by those who are skilled at it. It's how many oral histories are passed down through the ages of Middle Earth, just like in real life.
Do you not see that? It's a logical parallel and one that makes the world Tolkien created feel much more real.

This is better than reading the books.
My only complaint is making contractions where there are none in the source. When Aragorn says "cannot" please don't read it as "can't." Tolkien did that apurpose.
Ha, you are a purist in these matters like I am!
The edition he is reading from was edited by Tolkien himself and included contractions in some places where later they returned to uncontracted form later. The stories are so old that there are many differences between some editions.

It's still light years ahead of the AI voiced audiobook I've seen on RUclips, as well as many others that are available here. The Robert Inglis version is the best audiobook I've heard for LotR.
The narrator is fantastic. Imagine the amount of time and work it takes to make something of this quality. Shame the last part is missing.

Why do people keep claiming that the LOTR is a trilogy? Several times JRR has unequivocally stated that it is 6 (SIX) books plus appendies published in 3 (THREE) volumes.

This is only books one and two… one of the best narrations i’ve heard from any audio book but now I hope I can find Return of the King with the same narrator.
