The Blue Flames really are something, the iridescence on both sexes are stunning, but honestly, I've had a special thing for the A. baenschi "Inca" since I saw it the very first time! They are on my "soon-ish" list. I was going to get some for my 250L, but my old mom has had a rough year and she really likes Kribensis, so I've decided I'm gonna surprise her with a pair when she comes visit. Not sure if I'm going P. pulcher or P. taeniatus (sp?), but the baenschi will have to wait until one of my smaller tanks are ready for them. Dang, I want a Dan's Fish local to me! :D
6:57 I’m glad you mentioned the temperatures they were found at, they would make great alternatives for people who want a South American cichlid without using heaters.
Oh, I also wanted to mention that everything I have learned about shipping fish, I've picked up from your videos. So thank you for those and all your content! Much appreciation for all you do.
They're all beautiful. I think I favor the look of the Red Gold A. Hongsloi and the Gold/Red Shoulder Macmasteri. And that face shot of A. Macmasteri @11:57 is adorable! 🥰 It's lookin' right into the camera! 👍Delightful!
Love Apistos. I currently have a (I believe) Female Agazzissii double red in my 10 gallon. Has amazing color just a few days in to having it. Love the activity
They remind me of hummingbirds and sunbirds, iridescent tiny jewels. I appreciate the hard work of people breeding in captivity for good color so that captive-bred fish are the preferred alternative. How can you not love these beauties?
I breed double/super red agassizii from European sources and they throw a decent amount of fry that grow out to be very, very close to the blue flames. Another percentage of them come out with 'Tefe' patterning and coloration mixed in with blues and reds. I've also had them throw Fire Reds in the early days of breeding them. These fish are definitely a mish-mash of domestic strains. No complaints though. Their coloration is very nice, albeit it varied. I also agree that the Baenschi females are amazing when fired up and ready to breed. My favorite apisto? Abacaxis!
Great Czech bred apistos! A.caucatoides can be a harem breeder Some might need more acid, softer water for egg viability. Those blue flame agassizis are killer!
@dansfish ❤ Thanks for amazing video!! Perfect timing as I just got a pair of Apisto cacatuoides from our local fish club. 🤩 They are in my 75g community tank with nano fish. So far so good as far as the apistos are ignoring the smaller fish. Several questions for you 😉 1) with a ceramic cave will they breed in a community tank, 2) I would like to add a group of dwarf chain loaches to this tank-will they do ok with the apistos? 3) mine are very shy, I am in the middle of rescaping the tank and will be redoing the hardscape; I am hoping they will be much more outgoing once they have more getaway spaces, do you agree? Follow up-Mine only hang out on the bottom of the tank. Is that typical? That is not what you showed in the video. How do you entice them to swim in all area of the tank? 4) I have been wondering what are the best choices to feed them. Thanks for that information in the video!! --Are you feeding live baby brine shrimp during the video? I sure hope you have time to answer my questions! And again thanks for such a wonderful video! 😮
I'm Soo happy to find this blue flame today. In the future i want to try setup a tank with blue and goldish fish. Electric Blue Acara. Electric Blue ram and blue flame apisto. Curious if it will work in a 300liter tank.
Great video! Have you ever had a male only apisto tank? Does it work? I would love to have 3-5 different males in a community tank of different tetras as dither fish if it was possible?!?! Or would they just fight each other all the time?
I've never tried a male only apisto tank, but I think it would work for some species of apists provided there were plenty of space for separate territories.
@@DansFish thanks, that’s my thoughts as well but I have never seen an example. You should have a try if you have a spare few swimming around lol. That would be a great video!
Thinking of getting an aquarium for Xmas. I really fancy getting a pair of apistos, a dozen or so cardinal tetras and 4-6 small Cory's. Would prefer to do a Amazon tributary biotope paladarium setup. would these fish get along? Maybe I'm being too ambitious for my first tank (80-100 litre).
Some day i might try em, but for now im in love w the bigger gudgeons. I have 2 snakehead gudgeon and 2 gold bar gudgeon. Really hoping i can get the snakehead gudgeon to spawn, pretty sure my gold bars are both male so ill have to keep looking out for a female. Either way super interesting fish!
Yes sir! The pair of Macmasteri red shoulders I got from you won't stop spawning. I've had three spawns with them so far, but the female keeps eating the eggs. I saw some posts on the apisto forums that some keepers successfully separate the female with her eggs into a private 10g and that gets her to stop. I'll try that if she eats her next spawn because by four she should've let some eggs become wigglers at least.
Europeans are so so good at this even the everyday hobbyist is so good at breeding their own fish to a very high standard, their local clubs has such high standard and quality.
hi dan your new scotch fan just a story about from my pastyears ago i kept a male threespined stickleback and 3 females he was a bonny bonny fish crimson breast called him robin very clever fish all the university's study them because of their intelligence never underestimate them a young lad helped out with the fish he was a bit slow always getting kept back at school he was the same age as the teacher 😒😒clever robin conned him into helping him escape and he took the whole fishroom with him just like watership down with the rabbits cant beat a bit of nonsense on a Saturday morning dan cheers 😊😊
I don't know much about blennys, but there are several gobies that would be good tank mates with Apistos. Some gudgeons would probably be okay as well, but keep in mind several gudgeons are aggressive and they inhabit the same niche as Apistos.
hello Dan! I will have to order some apistos from you! looking for the blue flames, Tefe blue pearls and the Steel Blue Borelli! Is there any in stock right now?
@@DansFish Sound good. I have the blue flames put on the wish list! Thanks! Looking forward to them when you get it in! Thank you! I hope you guys will also get some Steel Blue Borelli one day!
Yes and no. Some closely relates Apostos will hybridized. Some species are more aggressive than others and will out compete them. If a tank is big enough and has lots of seperate territory spaces, then it is more likely to work, but it's definitely a risk, especially if the aquarist is not familiar with the personality of each species.
Omg. I need an a healthy apistogramma for my discus tank. The double red cacutoides is awesome and I love the macmasteri. Every pair I’ve had died on me. Not from you though. I need to order here.
I had different experience with panduro, they were by far the easiest to keep and borelli was the hardest to keep. Maybe that's got to do with my supplier
I have a male and female Apisto Cocatoide im planning on getting 2 more females. Just like too know your your ideal food for this species species plrase ? Hard too het them to eat eat flake . Tia.
Hmmm. I mostly feed a variety of dry foods without any issues...the fish eat it vigorously. If yours are being picky, perhaps try some frozen foods or small live foods.
I am from europe but i cant find them(the blue flame agasizzii)😢, can only find them in Germany but they sold out there so do you know where else i can order them?
whats size are those tanks?Im planning getting 55 gallon tank and planning on getting apistogrammas in there, but what i have heard that they are really violent fish?
I don't know. But I do know that you could solve the problem by setting up a fishroom and breeding Apistos in quantity. I'd love to purchase them from a stateside source if you can produce them!
With the the blue flame, do you need 2 males for dominant male coloration? Or will a single male with 1 or more females automatically color up as the dominant male?
I bought my first Apisto's nearly 50 years ago. Apisto's at once, Apisto's for ever. But I don't like any type of expensive breeded variations. I prefare natural colours and fins. Our famous german scientist Goethe wrote nearly 200 years ago: ,,Die Natur hat immer recht !" I think so, - all those artifical colours, veils and fins means degenaration. As a member of two international saving projects I prefare to care and breed endagered species of beloved ornamental fish and wildlife at all. I don't like wasting time and energy.
A lot of times, after we sell out of pairs, we'll have some extra females, and we'll list them as such. After we're done pulling for orders next week, we'll get a recount and list what's left. Reach out to us at hello@dansfish.com next Wednesday and we'll see what we can do.
What is your favorite Apisto?
I really like A. piaroa. Any chance you can bring them in?
🥳
I want those blue flames sooo bad. I don't know if it would work in my hard water though. Like out the tap almost 600 TDS.

They color up whenever they're feeling good.
Can we keep multiple apisto species together?
It depends on the setup, but yes, there are species of Apistos that will get along.
