David Bruce is a 21st century Ravel. This is highbrow for the masses. "Highbrow" in its very best sense of connoting rich cultural roots and being worthy of deep investment. And "for the masses" in its very best sense, being approachable by any and all for its many-layered satisfactions, from subtle to visceral.
This composer is great. Something new without sounding like it’s trying too hard just to be “new and different”. It’s like a mix between classical, post-rock, and jazz at times.
Terrific composition, David Bruce has mastered the fine line between originality and familiarity for the listener! Maybe one day my music will be so original.
Hey, I don't know much about composition but this is really interesting. The shifting staccato rhythms and motifs that fade in and out remind me of the way that rain can lead you through half-formed moods as you pay less and more attention to it. Hard to follow in a good way, and incredibly energetic even when it seems peaceful. I love it.
Really loved the calm section at the end, following the climax. Gives a chance to reflect and end quietly rather than ending on a high note - which the audience clearly expected lol. Also, I really liked the tapping right at the end. Sounded very much like distant rain that can be heard from the comfort of the indoors.
This piece has managed to wonderfully capture the feeling of sitting on a porch and watching the rain, because you have nowhere else to be and no reason not to relax and enjoy it's beauty.
Once in every long while I hear a piece of music of such freshness, sincerity and originality that it washes over me-disarms me. At such moments I no longer doubt Mark Rothko's claim that viewers have come to tears in confronting his work. For me (a composer) "The Consolation of Rain" is such a piece. Awe inspiring performers! A thrilling piece! Congratulations to DB et al!
Wow. Songs without words says the composer and it does have that feeling of a group of very different ideas. Really fresh and moving and deliverd by less people than your typical boy-band or rock group. And yes it does sound like rain. I thought of the Pcific Northwest more than Sunny Santa Barbara.
David, your really interesting, informative and - for me anyway - totally relevant Patreon Videos, lead me here to listen to your music. Absolutely wonderful, and its great to hear melody and emotion in a thoroughly 21st Century piece. Thank you.
This does make me feel that the sounds are coming at me from all directions and has a spatial generosity about it. It is modern without trying too hard to be edgy or overly mannered and clever. The variety and freshness in the instrumentation are magical. There is a conservative neo-lyricism that is also a pleasure to hear amongst all the soul less mathematical robotic stuff around these days. I think it could surpass Gumboots! Thank you!
Good. A lot of variety in this (5 movement?) piece and yet remaining expressive and "pastoral" pretty much throughout. I remember expecting good things from a cd of Toru Takemitsu, named after his composition "Rain Spell" (similar instrumentation to this piece), and being disappointed. The music here by Bruce is good, though, and even captures a Japanese like stillness at the end. Leo Brouwer's "Landscape with Rain" is another good "rain themed" piece but it is a short and solo piece
i feel like the xylophone is too loud compared with the rest. one challenge with new music is that it hasn't had the test and perfection of time. with many classical composers, time perfects each piece as interpreters notice and correct flaws in tempo, dynamics, etc
You asked 3 years ago. It is available now in 2019 on a CD called "The North Wind was a Woman". The CD consists of several pieces by composer David Bruce performed by various ensembles. This piece is performed by the same group as on this video i.e., Camerata Pacifica. It's a good recording.

His music sounds like the 20th century and its misery didn't happen.
David Bruce is such an amazing composer, he can create such a lively moment in a piece and still sustain the peaceful downfall of rain
14:38 Honestly, this key change from F major to Ab major is probably the most elegant key change I've ever heard.
Terrific composition, David Bruce has mastered the fine line between originality and familiarity for the listener! Maybe one day my music will be so original.
Exquisite music! I love the instrumentation and the combination of timbres it makes for. What an ear!!
And that jaunty scherzo is so bracing. God! we more than ever need that positive energy!
All very great observations, Antonia. We appreciate you listening and leaving your insights!
Wonderful! I only recently discovered David Bruce. What a gorgeous composition and performed so brilliantly!

Really wonderful, both music and performance
Gosh, so wonderful. 20 minutes gone without even noticing. ¡Such an impressive and beautiful piece! Love it.

The first two thirds of this music is long, slow, and thoroughly enjoyable. The whole piece is briliant, fascinating, and a real gem. Bravo.

Ancestral sophisticated and refined beauty, intimately colourful, universally moving. Rarely generous, harmonious and technically perfect. Bravo!
What a master!

Excelente composición e interpretación. Bravissimo!
Wow. I want to hear more.
Haunting.

Compelling music!
Incredibly tight performance! Really beautiful too.
tone painting ability like debussy but distinctly original. remarkable.
nice. i enjoyed that
quel compositeur fascinant
19:50 the look she gives when they start clapping was great.
The first movement is a little bit reminiscent of Concerto de Aranjuez - very exotic and full of solace
oh my this is something

Is there a recording for sale of this piece?
Not just yet, unfortunately.

It's also now available on the Idagio classical streaming platform
Yummy
This is 'cut and paste' music with some lovely sonorities but no shape. Forgettable.
1/40 comments. Not bad. Always one ass though.
That's pretty rude. You could have expressed your opinion or critique in many other ways - for example without using labels.
Beautiful music.
