I feel the classic look should be used as an "incomplete" stage of the curse nowadays. At first the change takes the wolfman form but the more times the infected person transforms the more bestial lupine form begins to take hold.

I agree , the cinematography so great, I come from the north of England and it’s accurate romantic and bleak etc etc. I remember watching this original movie when I was a kid and this a perfect modern interpretation of it, the madness and cruelty of Victorian England, the obsession with medicine ( of which ( batmans Arkham asylum is based on) is all evocative and I love that. Emily Blunt is great in this she’s a great actor that fact she’s gorgeous makes it all good. H weaving as usual always great

This is a painfully underrated movie. Having bought the special edition with the director's cut , I will tell you that it is the superior version. What would have made it even better are the extended scenes that had been cut that are in the bonus material. I especially like the puppet show scene which inexplicably is deleted from the film. Great sets and acting are only diminished slightly by what I would imagine to be some slow pacing. I also would have liked to see more time with Maleva, the Gypsy woman. I also believe that had they allowed Rick Baker to do more of the practical effects, the transformation scenes would have been amongst the best in retrospect. Had the original movie from 1941 had its plot a bit more fluffed out as they did in this movie, it to would have been better. All-in-all both of these movies are my favorite werewolf movies.

    • @donovanbradford8231
      @donovanbradford8231 11 месяцев назад

It's interesting that you bring up problems with the pacing and Rick Baker not being allowed to go full American Werewolf in London was originally supposed to happen but the studio stepped in a said keep the make up practical but the transformations will be CGI which led to tensions. Also this film was done in the Writers Strike in 2009 or 2010 and as a result of certain scenes being cut and the original script being altered the director demanded the script be fixed because the changes gave the movie a disjointed feel and as a result of their refusal the first director either left or was fired. Do yes while a good werewolf movie there was by far a better film that could have been made here.

All good points and I absolutely agree with you. I wish I had the skills to make my own edit. I would have included the scene from The costume ball where the blind woman was singing some sort of Opera. I would have removed some of the dream sequences as to streamline the story a bit more. I might have also backed off a little bit on The Love story I spect between Lawrence and Gwen. Perhaps it would have been better if they just had had him meet her in the town as is done in the original film. I think making the Father the werewolf is the lesser of the two good ideas in both movies and perhaps having his father kill him in this movie would have also played better. I can imagine those scenes and I think it would have been less complicated

    Hi Cogan Lollins!
Recently I discovered your channel and had the chance to watch some of the content which you created in time. I have to confess that I'm quite interested, cause I really like to read about Mythological and Supernatural Beasts and look at different transpositions of them, but sadly my knowledge on this subject is not vast as yours :)
I definitely like The Wolfman (2010). I think they showed the right balance between supernatural and pseudo-scientifical causes for this transformation. I really appreciated your exposition, but I think that you may have missed some details about these Werewolves.
At 12:44 you said that they retain some of their supernatural powers in HUMAN FORM, such as Fast Healing and Enhanced Hearing, but also some kind of "Beast Glance", able to scare a horse and tame the guard dog, Samson. Also in the movie there is no actual clue that they keep a better sight or smell ... in truth is actually the opposite, as they show how Lawrence suffers from some grade of random hallucinations, even after his full recovery in the daytime (this reminds me a bit of the "An American Werewolf at London" and, alongside the aging and the homicide of part of his family, this thrilling flashes could also be related to the gradual loss of sanity and final self-destruction of Sir John Talbot, making this "werewolf condition" quite similar to rabies disease).
More important than this, it's actually stated and shown multiple times that in human form these werewolves possess some grade of INHUMAN STRENGTH, which allows Lawrence to hold back three villagers (and short after he confess to Gwen that he feels his shoulder surprisingly stronger). The same STRENGTH possessed by his Father, who was effortlessly able to knock down Singh (the night that his brother was killed), kill Carter (the police officer of Scotland Yard), toss a wooden table through the living room, and overpower his son with his bare hands despite his old age ...
Obviously all this before the major physical changes, but interestingly just the day before the full moon (as all the other signs of their condition, such as the visions and the growling of the dog), proving that their "wolf side" and all the abilities are always within them, but they are influenced by the fall and the rise of the moon (as exhibit by some transitions during the movie), reaching their peak with the complete transformation).
I'm afraid that I wrote something a bit too long (but I hope not too pretentious) but I'd really appreciate it, if this comment could reach you.
    My Best Regards to You!

13:19 maybe I can shed a little light on this for you. This movie deals a lot with the afterlife and the demonic ties that werewolves have its subtle but it's present. So, whenever they mean set him free, they mean set his soul free of the curse. Meaning Lawrence's father is dead just like Lawrence. However, unlike his father Lawrence is spending his eternity in heaven as he was a man of faith prior to being cursed. He hated his actions as a monster and was set free by someone who loved him. It's meant to be a polar opposite and touch on the old parable of the dual wolves inside us. Lawrence's father fed his black wolf, his flesh, his sinful nature, his curse, etc etc. by giving into his desires. Lawrence fought against his desires he fed the white wolf, he prayed for forgiveness etc etc. and in the end technically love one the day as his love for Gwen gave her the opportunity to set him free. Narratively it's a little played out it's a very familiar trope, but that's what it means.
TLDR (In World) set him free means set his soul free from the damnation of hell forced upon him by the curse. All werewolves are damned to hell but can be "set free" by someone who loves them. There is no cure for the body but there is for the soul.

It’s a shame this movie had a soft reception and fell somewhat short in the box office, as it does go back to the first werewolf movie that paved the way for so many more to come in the years followed. There were some flaws within this remake such as the CGI not being top notch, by today’s standard, and some of the pacing could’ve been more of a horror movie pace than an action movie pace. Though believe this movie may gain a cult following and an interesting piece of movie trivia; Joe Johnston wanted to do a sequel to his 2010 remake of THE WOLF MAN, with a now-cursed Inspector Abberline (Hugo Weaving) using his new werewolf abilities to finally hunt down Jack the Ripper in 1890s America.

honestly, I feel like it was the boy's fault. if he had not stupidly ran off into the woods, Lawrence would never had become a werewolf in the first place.

Even if they don’t do a sequel release for theaters, it would be nice to see them do maybe a sequel for a Netflix release.

Although I prefer the classic with Lon Chaney Jr. and Claude Rains (especially since they don’t go through the cliché of the love interest be the one that “frees him” but his father, movie writers tend to forget about family love with these kind of things), this movie both brutal and enjoyable. And the mention of Jack the Ripper is dope.

There is a book titled, The Hyde Effect, by Stephen Vance. A similar scene is made when doctors roll out a patient on a gurney into a medical theater. Pretty much the same thing happens. Moon rises, patient transforms and the observers panic and get killed. Its a fun read if you like werewolf stories. Very satisfying. I liked this movie very much. But I was disappointed in the father vs son for dominance. That wasn't satisfying. The original WOLFMAN hinted briefly on the tensions between Larry and his father, played by Claude Raines. I had hope for a different reason and something different regarding the death of the brother. I do like that the movie references the original Werewolf of London. overall the 2010 movie was entertaining. But I think it could have been better.

The cane is paying homage to the Lon Chaney Jr picture. Lawrence, while a werewolf, is killed by his father with the cane.

I love this movie. I think it will end up becoming a classic. The acting, cinematography, scenery, etc.
Anthony Hopkins stole the show in this movie. in my opinion, the action scenes were second to Anthony’s charisma on the screen.

The Wolfman is a great movie and yet I wish that it had done well but it was rewritten because of The Writer's Strike and Twilight destroyed The Werewolf just like The Vampire as well as the release date getting pushed back from 2008 to 2009 to finally 2010. I love the twist with Sir John Talbot being The Werewolf who killed his oldest son Ben and cursed his youngest son Lawrence as a werewolf not to mention I love The Rated R Horror and Gore. Now Ryan Gosling I heard is going to be The Wolfman and will he do Lon Chaney Jr. proud like Benicio Del Toro did in 2010, I hope so and he seems much better than The Rock who Alex Kurtzman wanted for The Dark Universe which shows what a hack Kurtzman is being how he didn't want Dracula Untold in The Dark Universe and let Tom Cruise take control of The Mummy didn't know what he was doing. But nice video and could you do The Brendan Fraser Mummy along with The Invisible Man 2020 and yes, The Mummy 2017.
