what is the use of this? can it lead to something? I get that it may help with patterns, analyzing things and statistics, but is there something more to this that I dont get?
I guess, at this stage of our development, we can use this kind of data visual representations (and further analysis of those visual representations) rather as an entertainment/pure funny facts (on observational level).
I see this as a tool to literally see trends, and potentially recognize when substantial change is taking place. For example, when is something gaining popularity, when is it a trend and not a fad, what outliers exist? If there is a lot of data, this is will be more scientific than citing a number of paintings that started an art period, or a number of personal friends who switched to the keto diet. We may think that Time magazine covers changed styles over the years, and the visualization allows us to see if it is actually true, and how exactly it happened. I can even imagine predictions made with data like this. At the most basic level, data visualization gives you an idea of something at a glance--a cognitive but also visceral understanding. If we were told that 3000 structures were damaged by wild fires, it might not be easy to comprehend the actual scale--in my head I picture the same thing if the number were 2000 or 5000. But if I see a map of the affected areas, I suddenly get a much better sense.
