  • We join the Vietnam Veteran community in mourning the loss of award-winning journalist and decorated combat correspondent Joseph Galloway, who has passed away this week at the age of 79. Joe carried the story of the American soldier in Vietnam forward like no other. Heartfelt and easy to understand, his work remained committed to chronicling the integrity of the American soldier in Vietnam and will continue to inform generations to come about who these men were, why they fought, how they died, and why that matters.
Joe was awarded the Bronze Star medal for helping rescue wounded soldiers during the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley in November 1965. This battle was depicted in the movie “We Were Soldiers,” starring Mel Gibson. Joe dedicated his career to sharing the experience of war from the soldiers’ perspective, often on the front lines alongside our troops.
Our Museum Educator, Keri Giannotti, was fortunate to participate in an interview with Joe last summer alongside our colleagues at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. She recalls it fondly as a highlight of her career. We share an excerpt here as we remember Joe Galloway and his legacy - an unwavering commitment to our armed forces.
Interview Conducted by Jim Knotts, VVMF; Keri A. Giannotti, NJVVMF; and Callie Wright, VVMF
Editing by Jillian Decker, NJVVMF Director of Development & External Affairs
    Music by David Fesliyan, fesliyanstudios.com

I see Joe, Hal Moore and Basil Plumley and every KIA from that horrific battle all gathered in a beautiful, lush field of grass, the sun shining brightly, the air cool with just a hint of humidity. They stand together as they did so very long ago, talking and remembering and sharing their stories. Every occasionally, a barely audible bell rings and General Moore walks gingerly to a very large gate. He's there to welcome yet another one of his men to the Heavens. He'll wait patiently and lovingly for every, single one of them to finally be together as Soldiers again. And young. Joe Galloway told a story and he told it beautifully. He is truly, truly missed!

"Now I've seen for myself what war is really about, its about how a farm boy from Iowa, hangs onto a machine gun for eight hours so he can protect his injured buddies, even when he himself is wounded and bleeding. Or how an African American boy from Charlotte, or a white boy from Houston, decide they'd rather die together, than abandon the other, in the midst of battle. War is about men who love their country, even more than that, love one another. What I was learning is that, There are some events that are so overwhelming, that you can't simply be a witness, you can't be above it, you can't be neutral, and you can't be untouched by it. Simple as that. You see it. You live it. And you experience it. And it will be with you, all of your days......Had names like Garcia, Perez, Hernandez. And I couldnt be more proud of them. At home they could and were treated like second class citizens. But on that day, in that place, who was there, who was standing up for America, who fought there and died there, men who had less than two weeks left of their tour of duty, should have been on a freedom bird going home, wrapped in ponchos, flying home in a casket, and so I have a totally different view of Vietnam veterans, and I think mine is the correct view." - Joe Galloway.
Wish there were more Americans like him today. Real role model. Real patriot.

Will we ever know? From a drafted (with US: used for conscripted enlisted personnel in front of service numbers) disabled Republic of Vietnam combat veteran '68. My buddy Jesse Carmona, Jr. had been in the Army for only 8 months. Look him up. Our next door neighbor, Alex Zsigo, was killed in June of 1967 at the Battle of the Slopes the month I took my Army physical in Detroit. I saw 4 men die at the same time and did not know their name. There are many more! I felt betrayed by LBJ. I thought Nixon lied or did not know. People ask me when was I in Vietnam? I tell them, "Last night." Eaglegards...

This was a beautiful and heart-felt tribute to all branches of the service who fought in the Vietnam War. It, too, makes me think of all the lives lost and what they would have contributed to the world if they had lived. The children, wives and Families they left behind. So very heart breaking ! They went to war because they felt it was their duty to go ! This was my Era...I knew several men who came back in coffins...face's I can still see today in my mind. God Bless them all !!!!! :(

What a spectacular, impactful, remarkable life. All Americans, regardless of whether you agree with the Vietnam War or not, should be familiar with his story, and the service and sacrifice of our military personnel during this very bad war so far from home. Read the book We Were Soldiers Once and Young to really learn what it was like, and the heroism and valor of our soldiers, those that came home and those who came home having given the ultimate sacrifice. Hate war but love the American warrior indeed!

In memory of Rusty Thurman. He left high school early, depressed, and the draft picked him up and that was it. This is an eloquent statement, and Joe Galloway is a person I admire very much, although I do not agree with all of his observations. By 1967, morale was low. Troops returned with major drug issues and they were stashed away overseas. The shine of the cause in Vietnam had worn off. The initial survery done by Eisenhower in the fifties had given the warning that was not heeded.
