  • We will go through our colonies and determine who is alive and who is not. How will we do? We will add sugar bricks and Fondant patties to the ones that are alive. #beekeeping #beekeeper #honeybees #beehive

    Sorry about your losses. We know as bee keepers that you can build your colonies back with splitting hives and trapping free bees in the Spring. I lost one out of three myself. God bless you and your family.

    Hate it for you Tim. You’ll get some splits off the four and then you’ll catch you some swarms and we’ll be watching as you get those hive stands filled back up. I got plenty of open spaces to fill too. Old Glory is looking good. Just keep the food on them since they’re at the top already. Inverted sugar with that fondant is the best. Take care Brother!!

    Garrard county central Ky. area. 24 hives and all are full of bees and plenty of resources. I didn’t treat for mites at all last year and no issues. Don’t understand all the various issues with beekeepers coming out of this winter. Great honey flow last year with 3 pulls, may , July and September. Just sharing my info. Good luck to everyone

    This is my fortieth year as a beekeeper and it's still gut wrenching finding "dead-outs". However, I've completely changed my overwintering practices in recent years which has improved the survival rate greatly; my winter losses range between 10 to 15%.
    *I feed a thin syrup during the dearth of late summer to stimulate brood production and ensure an abundance of "winter bees".
    In Fall I reduce all colonies to a ten frame, insulated brood box without top ventilation. These "condensing hives" go against everything I previously believed about overwintering hives. But Randy Oliver does a great job explaining the benefits, and science, of such a setup. Lastly, feed them with a heavy syrup in Fall until they're very heavy. And, remarkably, a decade ago I requeened my entire apiary with VSH Italian queens; I haven't taken any measures to combat mites since. It's like turning back the clock to a time before Varroa. Hope this testimony helps. And thanks for sharing your endeavors.

      I have been doing a lot of studying on the condensing hive and I am going to try it next year. A different way of thinking but it seems to work and it does make a lot of sense. I wish I was keeping bees back before Varroa. Thanks for the comments and for watching. Good luck.

    Only watched one other video of yours so I’m not familiar with your mite treatments. I had about 50% loss last year and it was all due to mites. This year I had about 20% loss. Way better but still not ok. I think these little buggers are not staying phoretic very long and the mite treatments are not working as well as it should. I did a couple videos talking about this and what I am going to do this year to try to prevent such high losses. It’s very disappointing when You see you bees doing so well late summer, but by mid late fall you can tell they are dwindling to much in numbers.

    • @theboonecountybeekeeper
      @theboonecountybeekeeper  2 дня назад

      I treated harder this year than ever before. 42 day cycle of Apivar and many rounds of OA. Even hit them at Thanksgiving and Christmas time with OA. I am going to try Apigard this year and going to change my over wintering method to a condensing hive. Al but 1 looked really good going into winter, the one was kind of short on bees and I was worried about them making it, the others really surprised me. Thanks for watching and good luck this season.

    • @ETsBees
      @ETsBees 2 дня назад

      @ Yeah, people have lost their faith in apivar, however I still hear a lot of people losing their bees even with the other treatments. That’s why I am thinking the phoretic period of these mites are not what they use to be. I think they have a little resistance to the treatments but I think the mites behavior is what’s getting us. I think the mite washes are not showing the real number on mites in the hive. They use to tell us what we wash is only a 3rd of the mites but I think it’s way lower than that. I think what we wash is closer to what not 6th. When we do out mite washes and we think we are ok, we actually have way more and it setting up all that brood with diseases and viruses

    Hi from southern New Zealand 👋 rough break, feel for you, losing bee's is the worst but you've got some great looking bee's, especially in the American flag hive👍😁 not going so great right now down here, lot of yellow jackets and asian paper wasps robbing hives😬 got entrances reduced which isn't ideal in 90 degrees heat but the bees are getting on top of the robbing wasps now, lost a lot of stores though and it's really really unusual for wasps to be attacking so early. Been destroying wasp nests like it's a new sport, five so far this week. God bless you from southern New Zealand 👋😃
