Here is my prospective , I started reselling because I love shopping is therapeutic for me. Got to the point where I had no more space for the stuff I was buying which I barely had enough time in a month or month to repeat my outfit. I don’t make much money reselling but is a way for me to recycle what I get. The point is I don’t mind spending a whole day shopping at any given store. A psychologist will charge more for the hour than what I can spend in a day at a thrift store or in retail 😂 you are doing a fantastic job tho!!!!🙌
I hit the new racks, then the do the hanger by hanger but I usually choose certain sections (jackets, sweaters, dresses, jeans, pants, scrubs & sleepwear) But I also only look at larger sizes in those items (except scrubs). So that cuts out a lot. And I usually skim the kids section on $1.99 day for jackets & snow pants. I found a Hanna Anderson down jacket for $1.99 a couple weeks ago! I believe - you do what works for you and what you enjoy! I am a part time seller so I am not trying to fill a quota.
Here’s the problem with the color tag theory for me. Here in my area, the tags are on the inside tag of each item. I have to look at almost each item to see if it’s new or not. The color tag isn’t just hanging off the side of the garment 😢
I agree with you on new racks and new color. I found 7 Lululemon on one new rack. I never thought about going there first until I watched your videos. I have learned so much from watching you. I thank you for all of your guidance that you give in your videos. You don’t have to do this kind of a test for us if it stresses you out. I work full time and I still have a few more years that I need to work, and I go after work a lot of times to de-stress myself. I totally feel calmer once I go into the thrift store. Enjoy your evening.
I can definitely relate to feeling like you have to justify the amount of time you’re spending in store or feeling like you don’t have enough to show for it. Sometimes I find myself picking up stuff I shouldn’t just so that I have something to bring home. I will say I like going every hanger when I have time as a research opportunity - feeling quality of different brands / learning new tags and looking them up.
I’ve been trying the cherry picking method lately and wondered if I was missing too much. Thank you for setting my mind at ease! My goal now is to get through the whole store in less than an hour so that I can get to more stores. Great video!
I don’t care where videos start. I’m new to reselling and I feel like I need to see everything right now, plus the hunt is my favorite part of reselling. I can see the value in how you do it though and I’ll get there one day.
My anxiety won't let me skip items, I have the absolute worst FOMO, lol. Also, I'm in TX and my thrifts are HUGE, not to mention I have a ton of them within a 15-30 min drive from home.
I can’t do the ‘new color method’ (I don’t think so at least)… The GW’s here in my area of Phoenix weave the new tag color items onto the racks. They tag most items onto the items label (which I like) because then they are not tagging directly through the knit of the garment and making a tag-hole in the item. The tag barbs are short and clear. The color is on the GW tag (not the barb) and also a date as to when the item was tagged (is on each tag). Anyways- I feel like I have to be meticulous and look hanger by hanger. This is not by choice. And it really sucks to be honest. When I lack the time or patience, I kinda scan for the lux textiles and any stand-out prints. And I walk though dresses/skirts and look for longer length, and then look at it. But- most of the time it’s the hanger by hanger method. And it’s exhausting, and other customers get in my way and I have to go around them which breaks my flow. Am I missing something, a better way to find stuff? If so- please share. When I type GW, that is my shorthand for Goodwill.
I would say, if you can't see the color tag, to focus on looking at the sides of the garment for quality and only look at those. It's another way of cherry picking. I have to do this sometimes. You could also try repositioning yourself to look on top of the rack to see the color and the tags. Just kind of use your hand to rake through and break up the Hangers.
Thank you for another extremely helpful video! I've been reselling PT for about a year and still hunting my niche method. You made some very valid points mixed with your opinions and I think that's an awesome teaching tool! With content like that, feel free to start your videos from anywhere lol!!
I always avoided all the racks of clothing because just thinking about going through all those clothes was totally overwhelming!!Your videos were reason I started, though! I still get overwhelmed sometimes and I might just stick to certain types of clothing. I’m glad you found what works best for you! I might try and see how it works for me
I could care less where a reseller video starts out. You do you!! I love, love, love getting lost in a thrift store. I can disappear in a thrift store for hours and come out feeling like I had a spa day. Thrifting with others requires me to pick up the pace and that makes me sad. It feels like leaving a movie in the middle. I could sense your emotion with the time suck so you need to do what makes you the happiest and most successful. It won't change my viewership in any way. I am grateful for the information and challenge of finding items at 100% sell through.
I absolutely relate to that feeling of stress after spending hours in one thrift store. I've been using the cherry picking method for a while now and prefer it. Love your content! Thanks for another informative video! 👍
I think the results vary depending on the number of stores and how they color/rotate. I wouldn’t do it in a store I’ve been to recently. But I do both. We have 8 goodwills and if I’m only going to one store on a given day and do 2 stores a week, then by the time I get back to the first one, it’s all new inventory (we have 4 colors they rotate through). I have one different thrift store next to my gym that I do the color method though, because I go 2-3 times a week, so I’m checking the front of the sections (where they always put new colors) and being done in about 30 minutes.
I agree, your method makes sense, especially since you drive so far and want the time to pick the best items from several stores. I tend to go through the whole store, but when I have a short time, I'll peek at the new rack and look for sales colors. Thinking of my best finds at Goodwill, they do tend to be the new colors and are often on the new rack. Our Goodwill marks the oldest tags at 75% off at the beginning of the week so something that would sell for $20, I will often buy at that time. It is a great way to get more items.
All of the thrift stores I go to in the metro Atlanta area have new items/new color tags weaved in with older items. So I alternate b/t going through each hanger and just looking to see if something catches my eye (depends on how much time I have). I will say that if I cherry picked, I feel like I’d miss some good items. This year I’ve been taking my time, going through most items, and making sure to check comps - the quality of my inventory and my ASP has increased. I love all your videos!!! Idc where they start! 😊
Watching from the UK. Don’t have new racks or coloured tags. I was going through every item in 4-5 shops in one area but now spend less time in each but go to twice as many. Stores here are very small so probably amounts to one goodwill, if that. Favourite thing to look at is shoes, no hangers to deal with. I’m finding the area is more important than my method. Thankfully I live near London so lots to pick from.
Love this video concept. Nice work! I allot not more than one hour per store. If I haven’t been there in a while I focus on fine tooth comb looking at almost every hanger on my key sections. If I’ve been there recently then I go from rack to rack looking for new stuff. Sometimes it’s a combination. But when the hour is up, unless it’s going super good and I’m finding tons of stuff, it’s on to the next store. Just gotta have some system in place but for me I think a combo of fine grain and cherry picking works best using a time limit.
Does everyone have the color tabs that stick out of the side of the item? We have tags, and they can be anywhere on the item, but they are usually NOT sticking out where you can see them. By the time I look for the tag to see the color, I might as well just look at the item. Does this make sense? Thoughts?
My Goodwill doesn’t use tags on any clothes….although we have minimal new racks. I just focus on the higher priced items for the season. Dresses….coats, etc.
Interesting perspective! I only have one Goodwill in my area so I visit that same store daily on my lunch hour. I can't say I go through every item, but I do check the new racks that they pull out daily. Thanks for sharing!
I guess it depends on your thrift stores. Ours are priced up so high that only color tags (the oldest color) that are 1/2 off are profitable enough to pick up, and even then not always.
Tbh that’s probably a limiting belief that’s costing you money and you’re selling yourself short. I rely on other resellers having this attitude because it keeps them from looking more carefully, and leaving me tons of amazing things to pay up for for more profit. And I find so much stuff that I will pay up for that I can make significant profit because they’re high value in resale. But once you get it into your head that the thrift prices are “too high” you close off tons of opportunity. And I pick it up. Example: last week I found a Lululemon men’s down puffer coat. It was priced $24.99. Most resellers like you would say “that’s too high” - not for me. I will pay that price all day because I can sell it for close to $100. I know it has been passed over by other resellers who think it’s “too high” because it was last weeks color. And I live in one of the most competitive areas for thrifting with prices that make most people nauseous and angry
@@DiamondDollJeanette1 If only bought the sale of the week tags I’d never sell anything. By the time things are half off they’ve been there for weeks. Nothing remaining is worth picking up at that point. Would love to see your eBay store so I can check out your store sell through rate
I am thinking it is the natural progression. We all need to start looking slower and running comps and as time goes on we may not have to comp has much on the spot, we get better/quicker at finding the flaws, we learn the stores and their patterns.
I live close to many thrift stores. However, they don't put new racks out all day and I'm usually going to the thrifts after 4 pm when I get off work. The Goodwills here in Maryland don't don't all do the tabs, some do while others used colored tags so you have to pull each item to see the color anyway. We also have Savers and 2n d Avenue but both use colored tags and not tabs. 2nd Ave only puts new racks out until 4 pm and they dont leave them just sit there. They put everything away right away. One of our 2nd Ave stores doesn't let you look through new racks too, I usually skip that store because it's very pricey and I have to pay a toll. The goodwill here don't put much out everyday. SO, in the end going through the racks is almost my only option.
The stores in my area don't tag the clothes on places you can see unless you go hanger to hanger. They also don't have new racks. And yell at you if you touch the rolling racks they just brought on to the floor. So I do have to go hanger to hanger. But I recently learned a few stores in my area bring in pre-tagged items and regardless if the color is the color of fhe week, they go on the floor. I have found amazing items that jumped out at me, and were the sale color! I know they werent there the weeks before because they were just too obvious and sometimes bulky for me to have missed them.
Spot on girlfriend! Thank you for your “realtime” sourcing method. I’m in SoCal and have access to a lot of stores & am always scared I’m missing out on something, but appreciate your “cherry picking” method. I agree and have switched to this method, especially when shopping the larger chain thrift stores. My only caveat is shopping a handful of small, independent type thrift stores in super bougie areas. You’re the bomb! May the thrift gods smiles upon you 😎
@@katiebresnahan7550 Austin Texas but I was in Ventura/Santa Barbara area and also thrifted a lot in north LA county. Probably very similar to what you experience I’d imagine :)
Hanger by hanger is my method when I'm at a store I haven't been to in 2+ weeks. The ones I hit every week I cherry pick because I've already seen everything else on the racks from when they were the new color. Will a couple things slip through? Sure. But for that tiny margin I figure what is meant for me will not pass me by :)
Looks similar to a store I go to. The racks are SO FULL I can barely get through them. Items are always falling off hangers. It's not easy to go through each hanger there. I always feel like a wimp because I get so tired and give up and end up going somewhere else. I'm with you, I think going to the new items is the best IF you go to the same stores all the time. If it is a smaller store, it can be worth it to check all the hangers but it does not take as much time as a large store. Great idea for a video.
As someone who lives closer to pretty decent thrifts (many many thrift stores in my local area within a 15-20 minute drive), I go hanger by hanger, and I can find some decent items even that are half off or even 75% off. Taking that you have to drive a decent amount to get to where you go sourcing, that makes total sense for your time to cherry-pick. Everyone is different. Also, that Thrift that you went to was HUGE. Totally get why you said that it would take you so long to go through it all. I have my select-sections that I go through, and at the moment, I rarely go over to the men's section because it is normally overly priced.
Very interesting to hear about your experience testing your theory out! I have a problem staying in thrift stores too long trying to justify my trip thinking I will find more things when I don’t 🙈 I try to set a timer but probably need to stick to your method of new racks and then going through looking for the new color
I think I need to start shopping by new tag color more often-- we have a ton of thrift stores in our area (Cinci metro area) but I cycle through them a bit haphazardly because when I go through every rack at a store I usually don't like to visit that store for 4-6 weeks so that the store is fully replenished. I'd much rather go to my favorites every week or two and look for the new tags.
The GW stores in our area do not use tags on the merchandise-there is no way to tell what is new and what is old. And touching racks with new items might get you a hand slap-no touchy until it’s on the floor. I usually choose one section to go through in a thrift day and rotate the sections I go through.
Thank you for sharing this experience, I am going hanger by hanger, I spend usually 4 hours in 1 store, and when I get backed to my home I feel I am sick and stay in my bed for the rest of the day.
I have been selling on EBay since the beginning. I find it harder to source since the world has become resellers. The good old days no one wanted “used” clothes. But for Halloween. But I found new ways to source. Crazy how this has become so big!
I was sourcing in Columbus yesterday. I got through 7 stores, mens and shoes only, in 7 hours, drive time included. I went through every item, except slacks, shorts, and blazers. I just look at what sticks out to me on those. 40 items, not great. But most of the items are good, $30+. I also have a 90 minute drive to get to the first store
I know the "dread" you're talking about when you're going through a store too slowly. Time's burning away, other resellers are hitting the other stores and the dollars per minute rate feels like it's plummeting. Full store takes me 1hr maybe 1.5 tops for a massive store and that's looking at every label on every hanger. Full menswear, womens outerwear and sweaters I'd be in and out in 30-40mins tops. Cherry picking - new tags, new carts takes 10-15 mins at most. I shoot for about 2-3 stores per hour including travel. A full day of thrifting could be anywhere from 15-19 stores... And even then sometimes I feel like I'm slow. It's a grind!
Oh my goodness….I’m new to reselling and I’ve been going hanger by hanger! My kids won’t even go with me anymore because I stay so long in one store. I never thought about looking for new colors. Thank you!!! Do you ask what the new color is? My stores typically don’t have rolling racks out that they’re stocking from.
I can tell by 1 of 4 ways: 1. See what colors the employees are putting out or look at new racks 2. Find clusters of the same color (usually at the ends of the aisles) 3. Ask an employee (be sure to specify new color and not half off color) 4. I keep record of the color system (they usually go in order) so as long as I know what last week was, I should be able to figure out what the current week is.
My goodwill still has dollar days, so I go and only look for the dollar color. I have 2 Thrift stores 30 minutes from me so I don't mind going through every item. But I understand the anxiety completely if I don't find stuff right away
I used to do this when I first started reselling. However, I've been using the new tag color method for a while now. That way I can move on to another store. I think most of the older tags have already been picked through by so many people that the chances of finding something good is low.
Not at all true. Found a pair of leather Dansko on Thursday worth 30 to 40. Thursday is important because that means they have been sitting and no one grabbed. Same with a rare Vineland that is worth 70 bucks.
Goodwills in my area don’t let us go through new racks being brought out. So I unfortunately have to go down each aisle looking for new color and anything that might catch my eye. One area I do go through thoroughly but quickly is dresses.
You are lucky if that is how you can do it. At all the stores near me they put new stuff in the racks. They don't have specific racks for new stuff like yours. We also don't have Purple as a color.
I don't like going thru everything, I go a lot of times at lunch during my workday because I will be more selective and conscious of what I am getting, if I do the go thru every item on the rack then I start picking up lower tier items and get stuck with them.
I don’t think the stores I go to have new racks! When I go to savers they do but sometimes the get mad if you are looking at them and they are trying to put them away. There is so much competition at savers it gives me anxiety 🤣 but in my area they have really good items . I usually only look through the items in looking for, mostly shoes. Depending on the store, if it’s a small store I quickly browse other sections. I don’t have the patience to look through everything, I get anxious too!!!
I mean, I guess it depends because everybody’s shopping is going to be different. Obviously if you’re driving an hour and a half just to get to the stores you need to make the best of the situation and your method is going to work best for you. For me, there’s only one Goodwill That I can get too easily… So I’m not going to skip things and I have found plenty of amazing pieces that made it all the way to the 50% off sale. I’m talking designer items. So if I was just doing the cherry pick method, I never would’ve found those. That being said, I know that if I had more stores to choose from, then I might do more of a cherry pick method because I would have more options for my Thrifting. And then I have another small local thrift that doesn’t do new tags of any kind. They will do hangers that sometimes have colors on them and those colors relate to sales but because things fall and people put things on hangers that don’t correspond to the color they originally on it doesn’t mean anything. So that’s a store where you really do have to go through everything. But luckily it’s not a very big store. so I guess it just depends on what you have available and whatever works for you Also, I don’t necessarily care about starting the car. I think people get annoyed by it because it’s distracting. I know that for me, I can’t actually watch when people are in the car because my eyes start trying to focus on the things outside of the car. I can barely watch thrift with me videos because of that because my eyes are trying to look at everything that’s happening around , the person. So I just treat a lot of these videos podcast unless they’re like sitting at their home or wherever showing off items.
Cayley, at the stores you shop are the color tags typically placed in the same location on the garments? For example on the sleeve cuffs, collars hemline or waistband depending on the type of garment? If so, that may make it easier to find the new tagged items.
I would love to do the cherry picking method but my goodwill doesn’t do the color system. It’s very frustrating so I go through the racks, and I live like 45 minutes away so it a very long day!
The thrifts in my area also don't do the colors. And they don't have new racks. No option except to look at everything. I have seen the same pair of Mother jeans with horrible puckering for 2 months now. This is why I prefer the bins.
I’m at the 6:44 minute mark. Before I finish the video I’m going to say it depends on how often you go if you should be going through every item. Why keep viewing the same items over and over when you should just be looking at newer that comes in? That’s my take.
Hi! Love all your videos! I always learn something new from each one. I'm a newer reseller & am slowly picking up speed. However, I've noticed an increase in returns on eBay. I'm averaging about 1-2 per month & they've all been due to size. I always include multiple measurements in my listings & sell about 28-30 items a month. What's your thoughts on preventing returns?
Thank you! I was starting to get discouraged but this helped put it in perspective. I also plan to join your resellers edge group soon to help grow my very small reselling business! Exciting! 😁
@@Chillakinz_binz yay! Can't wait to see you there! We have some affiliates who are just starting to promote. When you decide to join, make sure to use one of their codes/links for 50% off your first month!
I have a goodwill 2 miles from my house, I go through every hanger in a few sections once a month and have found some really good things that were missed. Typically I spend around 1-2 hours when I go on a regular trip to go through dresses, plus size, jeans, tops, shoes and mens. The days I go through all the hangers is all day, but I do that on days they get trucks in so they are pushing out new racks nonstop all day as well those days. And on the starting in the car, I don't care where videos start, but it really bothers me when people record videos while driving. I worked trauma in the hospital for a decade and I can tell you that you are way more distracted than you realize recording and driving and talking. I won't even watch those people videos so they don't get views at least from me.
If it’s a new to me store or one I am familiar with but haven’t been in a week or two then item by item if it’s a regular store on my weekly thrifting route new color tags only.
You’re lucky your thrift stores put the color tags on the outside of the item. My thrift stores do that for jeans and pants but for tops and dresses they put the color tag on the tag of the item so you’re basically forced to go through hanger by hanger to even see which items in the aisles have the new color 😓. In that situation would you go to certain sections of the store only?
This is true in my area, too. If I don't have time to go through everything, I will at least try to do the larger sizes and take a quick look at the other. A lot of people do shoes and handbags first, but I still have a lot to learn on those, so it slows me down.
As someone who thrifts exclusively from the bins, I don't think you could pay me to touch every hanger lol. 😂 the high of the bins compared to the racks makes me not even want to look lol
thats the complete opposite of what happens in the bins. I feel like its more work and you need to dig through every item. I also fins more things from older bins than new
@RagRevivall I like the act of digging and mystery. The racks in our area are very over priced and mostly generic brands. At the bins I don't have to be as picky paying by the pound
My Goodwills do bring out new racks. If they don't they should still follow a color system. I figure out the new color by 1 of 4 ways: 1.
If that works for you I think that's great! I rarely look for the sale colors. For my business model, I'd much rather pay a few bucks extra per item but have a much higher asp. The items on sale are the ones that have been on the floor and picked over by other resellers for weeks. Chances are, there's not many high asp items left.
How do you do the Cherry Picking method if the thrift stores don't put the colored hang-tag thingies sticking out on the outside of the garment. None of my thrift stores here (Goodwill, or otherwise) do their tags like that. So you have to flip through them to even see what color each item is. Do you have a good cherry picking method for the stores that do this?
Some of my stores put it on the tag. I basically try to hover over top of the rack so I can look down and find the new color without touching everything. Sometimes I use my hand to kind of rake through the items to be able to see the tag color but not have to go hanger by hanger. Typically the items get put at the ends of the aisles or where the sizes change. Hope this helps!
GW prices are too high now in my area. I will occasionally cherry pick, but have found much better sourcing options. Curious about the Burberry assessment. I couldn’t tell what you saw on the tag that confirmed it was fake, but there is authentic stuff made globally, including China and Japan. Please share! Thank you! PS If someone is sourcing and filming, why wouldn’t the video start in the car lol?! 🤣
I’m trying to dk this ..the problem is the no sale prices on the new items are so high that it’s sooo hard tk make decent flip and then I find nothing 🤷🏼♀️
I would recommend one of two things: 1. If you can, focus on getting through thrift stores faster and getting to more in the same day. Your likelihood of finding bolos at decent prices is more likely the more places you get to. If you're doing this method, I'd also recommend doing some comp research for bolo's in certain categories and filtering your minimum price to $35. That way you only focus on memorizing the higher asp items. 2. If #1 isn't possible, then it may be a better option to shop at a place like the bins where you can take more risks and pick up things based on factor stacking.
Wow you spent 3 hours in one store. I thought you purchased whole sale I had no idea you went to source. I don’t understand what you mean by your method (cherry picking in many stores) is that what you meant ? Lol I’ve got posher va now it’s helped a little thinking of cross listing.
I do get wholesale but we also source. Cherry picking just means we aren't going through every item. We are scanning with our eyes and only looking into certain pieces.
I could feel how stressed you were getting using this method and when you posted the data at the end, it really doesn't make sense for you. I also get stressed when I'm part way through the store and starting to feel pretty tired and that it's such a huge time suck. I really haven't found a good method of easily identifying the new items, though. Sometimes there are new racks out, but at other times, they've all been put away or are in the process (I still look at those). I find it hard to pick the new color out of a rack of clothes and find I have to go through most of the clothes just to see what color they are. Another negative for me is that there aren't that many areas (if any) around me that have several good stores in close proximity to each other, so I may as well spend more time at the stores I go to. I am especially apt to do that at the Salvation Army, as they have two colors 50% off and one 99 cents. There, I look for the new items and the discounted ones, because often they are worth picking up when discounted that much. I am still looking for a better way overall, though, and testing out different stores and areas. This was a very interesting video. I am alway happy to see you on a video and could care less whether you're in the car or not!
@@DiamondDollJeanette1 I believe everyone should do what is best for their business. This method doesn't work for everyone, but it works wonderful for me.
How often are you going to these same stores? Is it a few times a week? I sometimes do not head up stores but 1x a week/2weeks since I am just part time.
Not sure why it is so hard to go through racks quickly. I am new to this and can get through a men’s shirts and jeans in under 30 minutes. I see plenty of others doing the same.
I think viewers getting upset about reselling videos starting in cars. Who cares? I think it’s being knit picky. Be thankful for the effort people! Geez…. Rant over. 😊
Hi Cayley. Please tell me how you can promote your products on eBay? As a new beginning seller, I list my products (clothing), but there aren't even any views. As I understand it, different promotions of a product are allowed only when there is already some kind of rating. How can I start promoting my product when I’ve just started so that sales can start? If you don't mind, please answer. Thank you.
Hello! First, I don't recommend promoting as a beginner. Promotions should be reserved for items that don't have a very high str or have a lot of competition. As a beginner, I'd try to work on your sourcing to only pickup items that sell quickly. If you still want to promote, I do so by going to the active listings page on ebay, selecting the items I want to promote, and then choosing actions >promote. If you don't have a store, I believe you can also do this in the listing draft before setting it active.
It takes practice for sure! I'd recommend doing some comp research before you go so you have an idea of things to look for. But, everyone is capable of only looking at the new color items and doing research from there.
As far as starting in the car...as long as you're not driving and the car isn't running. I don't care. Driving and recording (unless self-driving vehicle) is driving distracted when looking at a camera. Vehicle running (AC/heater), the humming noise is overwhelming to me on a subwoofer (home entertainment system).
My Goodwills do not have color tags, there are no "new" racks, and nothing is arranged by size. I just pick the sections I usually find the most profit in and go hanger by hanger.

Every hanger..it gets faster once you know what you are looking for
It's every hanger for me. I have to spend more time of course but the amount of brand new items that I see is really awesome!
I can’t do the ‘new color method’ (I don’t think so at least)…
The GW’s here in my area of Phoenix weave the new tag color items onto the racks.
That's exactly my experience too 😣
Do you ever hit up Deseret

Start your video wherever you want! The car is perfect. Thank you for sharing your time, energy, and talents with us.❤
I absolutely relate to that feeling of stress after spending hours in one thrift store.
Thoughts?
I try to position my body overtop of the item if it's stuck on the brand label. I use my hands to kind of break up the Hangers to see it.
Same, my area Goodwills are very well aware of resellers and price up. I only shop by color of the week unless it's a rare or unique item
@dustyoldhat But are you really making a profit with that purchase price?
@@DiamondDollJeanette1 Is $75 a profit?
@@DiamondDollJeanette1 If only bought the sale of the week tags I’d never sell anything. By the time things are half off they’ve been there for weeks. Nothing remaining is worth picking up at that point. Would love to see your eBay store so I can check out your store sell through rate
I am thinking it is the natural progression. We all need to start looking slower and running comps and as time goes on we may not have to comp has much on the spot, we get better/quicker at finding the flaws, we learn the stores and their patterns.
Totally agree.
My Goodwill doesn’t have the new color on separate racks. I have to go through all the clothes just to see the weekly color.
A lot of mine are that way also, but I still figure out the new color and shop the aisles for that color.
Lucky
Spot on girlfriend! Thank you for your “realtime” sourcing method. I’m in SoCal and have access to a lot of stores & am always scared I’m missing out on something, but appreciate your “cherry picking” method. I agree and have switched to this method, especially when shopping the
larger chain thrift stores. My only caveat is shopping a handful of small, independent type thrift stores in super bougie areas.
You’re the bomb! May the thrift gods smiles upon you 😎
What area are you in?
You as well!!
@@helpfulcommenter North San Diego, where are you?
No touchy 😅
Thank you for sharing this experience, I am going hanger by hanger, I spend usually 4 hours in 1 store, and when I get backed to my home I feel I am sick and stay in my bed for the rest of the day.
I have been selling on EBay since the beginning. I find it harder to source since the world has become resellers. The good old days no one wanted “used” clothes. But for Halloween. But I found new ways to source. Crazy how this has become so big!
looking at the new color is the only way for professionals, good video Cayley!
That's awesome! Even though you browsed every section and glanced at every item I assume you did not touch and flip every hanger though?
@@cayleyelaine yes, flipping hangars. Except slacks, shorts, blazers. On those I'll move 5-10 at a time.
I do the new color method at my normal stores, but the ones I went to in Columbus the tags are hard to see
I know the "dread" you're talking about when you're going through a store too slowly.
I can tell by 1 of 4 ways:
1. See what colors the employees are putting out or look at new racks
2. Find clusters of the same color (usually at the ends of the aisles)
3. Ask an employee (be sure to specify new color and not half off color)
4. I keep record of the color system (they usually go in order) so as long as I know what last week was, I should be able to figure out what the current week is.
@@cayleyelaine Thank you….and thank you for an awesome video and sharing your experience with us newbies.
My goodwill still has dollar days, so I go and only look for the dollar color. I have 2 Thrift stores 30 minutes from me so I don't mind going through every item. But I understand the anxiety completely if I don't find stuff right away
We don't have colored tags (no tags at all, actually) or new racks so everything gets mixed up together on racks. ):
I don't mind where you start your videos. You always do a great job !
The new color tag method changed my life😂…I’ll never be able to thank you enough. 🎉
It's the best!!
Califia organic almond milk is my fave. It doesn’t have any added gums.
I use their barista blend oat milk at home!
You're adorable and relatable. Love watching and have now subscribed ❤
Our goodwills don’t use any tags :( makes it very hard to be efficient!
I don't like going thru everything, I go a lot of times at lunch during my workday because I will be more selective and conscious of what I am getting, if I do the go thru every item on the rack then I start picking up lower tier items and get stuck with them.
Loved this challenge.will try your method.
But luckily it’s not a very big store. so I guess it just depends on what you have available and whatever works for you
Also, I don’t necessarily care about starting the car.
Typically, yes.
You motivate me no matter where you start your videos :)
New to thrifting - do all stores do color tags based on newness? This is good info. Thank you!
Not every store does, but a lot of stores change the color of the tags every week with the new items they are putting out.
It sounds like you've done everything you can on your end to prevent it. Returns our bound to happen and they also increase as sales increase.
Thank you! I was starting to get discouraged but this helped put it in perspective. I also plan to join your resellers edge group soon to help grow my very small reselling business! Exciting! 😁

The thrift stores i go to don't color code what is new vs old ? Most around here don't
Where do you shop for your finds? I’m in Austin, Texas. I am new to reselling and need some help with where to find clothing.
I shop at thrift stores.
As someone who thrifts exclusively from the bins, I don't think you could pay me to touch every hanger lol. 😂 the high of the bins compared to the racks makes me not even want to look lol
Lol! I actually use the opposite method when going to the bins. I do try to go to the new rotations but I try to touch every item.
thats the complete opposite of what happens in the bins. I feel like its more work and you need to dig through every item. I also fins more things from older bins than new
@RagRevivall I like the act of digging and mystery. The racks in our area are very over priced and mostly generic brands. At the bins I don't have to be as picky paying by the pound
Unfortunately in my thrift stores they color Tag the label inside item so you almost have to look at every item to see the color.
what do you suggest for thrift stores that don't bring out new racks like Goodwill?
My Goodwills do bring out new racks. If they don't they should still follow a color system. I figure out the new color by 1 of 4 ways:
Mine is Elmhurst® Unsweetened Cashew Milk
My GW has 50% off the old color, so that is generally what I source for. What are the thoughts on that?
@@cayleyelaine it does, thanks!
I automatically assumed it was fake because of the cheap tag on the inside. It could've been real...but probably not.
Start in the car all you want! 😃
Monica
I’m trying to dk this ..the problem is the no sale prices on the new items are so high that it’s sooo hard tk make decent flip and then I find nothing 🤷🏼♀️
I would recommend one of two things:
My goodwills dont have new racks
What about only buying the color of the week unless it's a unique item?
They are the newer items and have been far less picked through so you are more likely to find great items by only shopping the new colors.
@cayleyelaine What if you can't afford that cause your Goodwills are very aware of resellers and jacks the prices up
@@DiamondDollJeanette1 I believe everyone should do what is best for their business. This method doesn't work for everyone, but it works wonderful for me.
In the car is fine with me…don’t mind the office, either. A good video is a good video!!!
How do you know what the new color is?
I go to the new racks and looked at what they were all tagged.
How often are you going to these same stores? Is it a few times a week? I sometimes do not head up stores but 1x a week/2weeks since I am just part time.
Once a week.
I don’t mind a car intro. People always find stuff to complain about 🙄
Not sure why it is so hard to go through racks quickly. I am new to this and can get through a men’s shirts and jeans in under 30 minutes. I see plenty of others doing the same.
That's great! The store I was at probably had much larger sections than yours and I was physically touching every hanger in this experiment.
I think viewers getting upset about reselling videos starting in cars. Who cares? I think it’s being knit picky. Be thankful for the effort people! Geez…. Rant over. 😊
lol why do ppl care if your in your car?? I think some people just need things to complain about😂
My thoughts exactly!
I appreciate that you don't use the typical omg/crazy eyes/jaw dropped video thumbnail....im over that
🤣 every now and then I do
I really don't mind videos in the car, but when people try to show the items they bought, you can't always see the items very well.:)
Thr Burberry Golf is probably real because the tag is in Japanese. Burberry is/ was super popular in Japan! Probably made for the Japan market.
Darn! Never seen a tag like that.
Thank you so much for answer , Cayley.
I love flax or hemp milk 🫶🏼
How many days do you source?
Usually 2-3 days a week. Sometimes more if I'm hurting for inventory.
As a new reseller, I don’t think I have the knowledge to cherry pick. Thoughts?
It takes practice for sure! I'd recommend doing some comp research before you go so you have an idea of things to look for. But, everyone is capable of only looking at the new color items and doing research from there.
As far as starting in the car...as long as you're not driving and the car isn't running. I don't care.
Driving and recording (unless self-driving vehicle) is driving distracted when looking at a camera. Vehicle running (AC/heater), the humming noise is overwhelming to me on a subwoofer (home entertainment system).
I feel like based on the comments you are alone most people do each item. For me shopping is the part i enjoy the most
Feel like you would miss a lot of good items cherry picking.
My Goodwills do not have color tags, there are no "new" racks, and nothing is arranged by size. I just pick the sections I usually find the most profit in and go hanger by hanger.
There are wau to many variables for this to be true analytics. Each store os diff each day is diff each person is diff
It's not the starting in the car that bothers me as much as showing the driving. It's not necessary and makes me motion sick. ☹️
