A big reason (not 100%) why people are not able to afford these mortgages is because people are faking their income and are getting qualified for way higher mortgages than what they can afford.
I was going through one report, it reveals that New York rents are almost equal to Toronto rents. Then question comes does the salaries in both cities are same? The answer is no. This whole crisis is self built by the govt to steal money from the public because there is no other source of income. Second, roughly 150K is the govt oriented taxes for 1 million dollar home. Does it make any sense. I never heard that for my home construction I need to pay taxes to govtz
The only solution is to move out of such mortgages which are taking more than 50% of your income by selling those loss making assets. As the rate of interest are not going to come down to affordable levels (2-3 %) in near future (2026-2027). So the wise decision will be to buy budget friendly asset or wait until the time is suitable (after 5-6 years). As for the value of the assets, it’s not going to change substantially in next few years because of the demand and supply gap controlled by affordability factor of the economy.
Stop listening to your realtors and mortgage brokers, learn something before you buy detached or semi detached house. You only focus on payment, now most of them unfortunately screwed.

Most who are suffering are ppl who buy after 2019, before 2019 unless they change house are doing fine, even though inflation is hitting everyone hard 1/3 Canadians are mortgage free (they don’t change house every 10yrs) 1/3 are renters 1/3 are mortgage holders -after 019 are doing really bad.
Did they get to know about their monthly payments after moving into the house? If these idiots couldn't do the math while signing up for the mortgage then its not Canada's fault.
USA rules us with banking. Why Canada increase Interests? Why? Price of Groceries are different in different countries so why interest rate is same in all developed countries? Anyone?
