This song has a deeper meaning, bradley was from lbc so the way he talked about reefs, and the water and badfish which also means addiction or someone whos a bad influence. Brad was ahead of his time!
I'll admit, Badfish is an odd place to start with Sublime, but you weren't around in the 90s when they were on MTV. Santeria is the normal gateway to Sublime. After you hear that, check out the entire 40oz. To Freedom album, which I think is on par with or better than the self-titled.
Glad you found Sublime. Bradley struggled with substance abuse, especially heroin. This song uses metaphors to describe his battle. He was a brilliant song writer and a soulful singer. Their genre is usually defined as a mix of Ska, punk, reggae dub. Highly recommend you check out "Summertime / Doin Time" for vibes and soulful take on the classic song, "April 29th, 1992" a song about Rodney king riots, and "Date rape" for his story telling ability. Just months ago, Brad's son Jacob recently took over lead singing duties and reunited the original band members. They played Coachella the last two weeks and are planning to tour. He sounds very much like his father, check them out.
Agreed! Another rappy one but with totally different vibes is Doin' Time. My fave version is the one with the Pharcyde feature, it was on the short album with What I Got (I think). There's just something so chill about the base line, with that drum that reminds me of Outcast's Rosa Parks' sonar sound (somehow the illest possible sound ever), and the cold AF chorus from Bradley: "Summertiiiime, and the livin's easy; Bradley on the microphone with Ras MG; All the people in the dance, will agree that we're - we're qualified to represent the L.B.C, me, me and Louie, We go r-r-r-r-r-run to da party and dance to the rythm! Agree about April 29th 1992!! Also a good fit for “white people music” discussing / being allies with the black community. Fun fact he says April 26th in the song which is the wrong date. You’d love all the early Sublime stuff. Their Genre would be Ska / reggae / hip hop IMO
@@erichighwayThe song has nothing to do with “being an ally.” The song describes the anarchy and destruction the riots caused, and points blame at the police. It doesn’t talk at all about standing up for black people or any of that nonsense. The only mention of black people comes along with a mention of Mexican people. There’s one mention of race in the whole song and it’s not even directly aimed at what you’re talking about
Sublime is SoCal reggae, early 90’s skate/surf Long Beach culture. Making that drive on PCH listening to Sublime smoking a blunt with my late best friend are the memories I’ll cherish forever
I know I just commented but damn, Sublime always reminds me of the good times we had back then. I almost forgot we had so many. That's what music should do for the soul.
Lou Dog! His Dalmatian doggo buddy. Lou Dog was their mascot. He took that Dog everywhere with him. I read that after Bradley Nowell passed, Lou Dog went into depression. So damn sad! In February 1990, Nowell purchased a Dalmatian puppy from an old man for $500, and named him "Louie" after his grandfather. Also referred to as "Lou Dog", he became a mascot for the band Sublime. Lou Dog was often allowed to wander the stage during concert performances. Louie was also often featured on the cover of Sublime albums, and was referred to in the lyrics of Sublime songs. In Sublime's most successful radio track, "What I Got", Nowell sings, "Livin' with Louie Dog's the only way to stay sane". Another prominent song by the band, "Garden Grove", mentions Lou Dog as such: "We took this trip to Garden Grove. It smelled like Lou Dog inside the van". Following Nowell's death in 1996, Lou Dog was cared for by Michael Happoldt, the band's manager. Lou Dog died from old age on September 17, 2001. Addictionedit
He was clean when they recorded this. He "celebrated" their success on the song "what i got" by using " one last time" and that "celebration " took his life right after the birth of his son jacob. Jacob is actually the new singer of Sublime with the original bassist and drummer. On a personal note.... stay strong! Ive been in and out of recovery since 2005 and now have 6 years straight under my belt. The early weeks/months SUCK A HUGE DICK. im not going to lie to you. But the end result is WORTH THE PAIN. you can grab control of your life back. You are stronger than you know. Love you brother
“What I Got” was their big national hit. It’s fantastic. Hardcore fans will prolly think that’s basic, but whatever it’s really good. I think the better choice is to listen to “Santeria” next. It’s their #2 biggest hit (more 1A/1B), and probably also a song that hardcore fans will think is basic. But if you’re tryina get a feel for what these guys are all about, vibe-wise it’s a pretty perfect next song to do.
Oh shit, I just saw “April 29, 1992” in the comments and…i might have to revise my answer. If youre from cali, that should be next. If not, yeah - “Santeria” next. Final answer.
I'm very glad to hear you exploring the music period loosly defined as "the 3rd wave of ska" Sublime was part of an era where the resurgance of Ska music rooted in the 60's (Al Capone - Prince Buster) that became repopularised in the 80's (Ruder Than You - The Bodysnatchers) then made a comeback in the 90's. @@scootaymildo1070 no they're not lol. It's joke music. You can like them all u want. But liking them and them being a "great" band are 2 different things. Tool is a great band. Metallica. Led Zeppelin. Sublime is not that
Badfish is one of my favorite Sublime songs. And while it was actually written in 1989 prior to his struggles with heroine addiction that eventually claimed his life. This song proved to be analogous of his love of surf culture and partying. But also, in the end, prophetic as he himself ended up becoming a "Badfish" within a few short years of writing/recording this song. And I always find the line "Ain't got no money to spend" bittersweet. As, at the time he wrote the song, couldn't afford heroine, but was allured with it's notion. Then later starts to find success and subsequently the money that follows said success, and falls victim to heroine's demise.
Thanks for listening to sublime. It was cool of you to actually look up Brad and give him some respect. It's actually crazy, his son just performed as the front man for Sublime at Coachella the same age that his dad passed away.
We'd start with at least 2 reps of Doin Time, cruuuisin the backwoods of NH in a big green boat of a car, bumpin the SHITE out of that bass, blazin a blunt (or more likely a roach someone found on the floor lol). Either way, that bass came on and it got me feelin like the baddest mo fo to ever DO IT! 🤘
You should check out their recent Coachella 24 performance live....His son played both weekends live with Sublime in homage to his Dad. At 28. Beautiful. RIP Bradly.
One of my favorite bands of all time. So glad you were able to react! Not a band you lose your mind to. A band you sit back, chill, light up, comfy vibes.
Oh, you have GOT TO listen to What I Got by Sublime. Right, and if you want to listen to Ska, you're going to want to look up Superman by Goldfinger. That said, I don't expect a reaction, nearly everyone born in the late 80's or early 90's has probably heard it when they played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
Bradley (his last name is pronounced like "nowul") was from southern California and was influenced by all of the different cultures there including hip-hop, punk, ska, but more noticeably, reggae. He was a very cool person with tremendous talent that left us way too soon. I would love to live in a world where he was able to continue creating music because I know the best was yet to come, which says a lot since the only two albums the band releaed before his untimely death were both fantastic start to finish. It's nice to see people haven't forgotten about him and his band.
Sublime was running in the background of damn near every party of my youth. You need to listen to Santeria. That's probably their greatest song. Same chill party vibe too.
Badfish was my absolute favorite. I always wanted to see them live in my teens. I was so heartbroken when he died. He son is playing with them now, and it's sweet.

As a teen, when this came out, we had so many good times listening to Sublime. Glad to see the younger generations enjoying this. Now they're back touring with Bradley's son , Jacob, now as lead singer. Good times.
So weird. There is a whole genre that is missed by the reaction channels. Fortunate Youth, Pepper, Slightly Stupid. They are ALL amazing bands making amazing music.
You should check out Stick Figure. They got the similar vibes to Sublime. I'd suggest something like Weight of Sound, Livin' It, or Paradise. But really you can't go wrong with any song. They are all amazing!
SolCal in the mid nighties had 3 big up and coming bands. Sublime, No Doubt and 311. During a joint show 311 got ahold of sublime's sampler and deleted everything. Sublime supposedly went on and STILL killed the stage.
Listen to their track "April 29th 1992" by Sublime, trust me. Before any other Sublime track, regardless what people vote for. TRUST ME. Aside from that; The self titled Sublime album and 40 oz to Freedom are the best albums and both worth listening to the whole things. They are both amazing all the way through. If you do more tracks from Sublime, don't listen to the Singles like "What I Got" and "Santeria" - listen to April 29th 1992, Under My Voodoo, Seed, Get Ready. Those tracks will blow your mind.
Pawn shop, april 29th 1992, smoke 2 joints, under my voodoo, doin time, garden grove. All bangers. Sadly he passed before the release of their biggest album

So many classic bands going back to the 80s with madness ( our house, one step beyond, my girl) and the specials (nightclub, message to you Rudy, ) to the 90's and 00's with bands like mighty mighty boss tones (impression that I get), reel big fish (beer, take on me,) and less than jake ( all my best friends are metalheads, plastic cup politics, dopeman,) Would love some more SKA!!!

@RobTV If you’re digging this, check out one of their important influences- Bad Brains!
Am GX and hispanic in Houston 5thward just radio stations and friends. Crazy world we lived in.
So many musicians died at 27 or 28, including Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison (the doors), Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix
Hold up, being new to Sublime is such a magical moment. They have so many bangers. I love April 29th 1992, great vibes and message.
This is cali reggae. Another outstanding example would be The dirty heads “hip hop misfits,” “stand tall,” and “neighborhood”
I can’t believe no one has suggested GARDEN GROVE by sublime it’s there best song 💯
Pawn shop, april 29th 1992, smoke 2 joints, under my voodoo, doin time, garden grove. All bangers. Sadly he passed before the release of their biggest album
Just start at the beginning of the 40oz to Freedom album, and listen to "Waiting For My Ruca"
If you like this I would check out Santa Monica by EVERCLEAR
Sublime has more upbeat songs, I tend to like them more. Amazing guitar.
Some great ones are Ebin, What Happened, and STP
Yet another reason to say fuck heroin. It's taken so many incredible, talented people from us. RIP Bradley Nowell ❤️
Bro this video just made me so happy, THANK YOU for your content
Other good ones by Sublime to check out: 'Wrong Way, Date Rape, What I Got, Santeria, Summer Time
You’re going to be majorly surprised by Sublime should you choose to listen to their full albums. He pulls from so many genres in his music. Songs: KRS-One, 5446 That's My Number/Ball and Chain
Are great tribute songs
Love Sublime. So many different styles
I second April 29, 1992. But you’ve def heard smoke 2 joints, come on now 😉
The guy in the back is Z Mann, you should invite him to the BBQ too. Z man's documentary about drug recovery is excellent too
Checkout Dirty Heads & Sublime w/ Rome. Anything by either will be great as well
Two thumbs up for your review, Rob! Long live Sublime! 👊🏼
Ayyy Rob, I’m white but from the Midwest North side Milwaukee, I grew up listening to gangster shit ya feel me ( Twista, Do or Die, Crucial Conflict, of course BiG ,Pac) but Bradley was a fucking genius and I highly suggest checking them out more! Fan since 1993- I even had the original 40 Oz. to freedom T- shirt with the "Skunk records" logo on back. Now I see that shirt at target and American eagle stores- but no judgment to that.
Time to get on the ska train!!! So many classic bands going back to the 80s with madness ( our house, one step beyond, my girl) and the specials (nightclub, message to you Rudy, ) to the 90's and 00's with bands like mighty mighty boss tones (impression that I get), reel big fish (beer, take on me,) and less than jake ( all my best friends are metalheads, plastic cup politics, dopeman,)
Would love some more SKA!!!
Sublime is a mix of punk, sky and reggae. Bro you need to check out the albums 40 oz to freedom, Stand by your Van and Sublime self titled. Sublime was probably the best band of the 90s.
